Whistle - Movie Review [ES - EN]

Whistle, película de terror sobrenatural estrenada en pasado febrero del año en curso que relata la historia de un grupo de adolescentes que se encuentran con un artefacto antiguo que tiene el poder de llamar a la muerte; esta es una premisa bastante simple que une todo posible cliché en este tipo de películas, lo cual puede generar la sensación de ser repetitiva, aunque en mi opinión, tanto su director como guionista intentaron sumar aspectos en la narrativa que funcionaron por ciertos momentos, pero fallaron en otros.

Whistle, a supernatural horror film released last February of this year, tells the story of a group of teenagers who come across an ancient artifact that has the power to summon death; this is a fairly simple premise that brings together every possible cliché found in this type of movie, which can make it feel repetitive. However, in my opinion, both the director and the screenwriter tried to incorporate elements into the narrative that worked at times but fell short at others.

Esta película fue dirigida por Corin Hardy, director británico con una corta carrera en la dirección, al ser "Whistle" su tercer largometraje. Este director, por ciertos momentos, impuso una estética que me hizo recordar de manera inmediata otras producciones británicas. Creo que el aspecto del lugar donde se desarrolla la historia, el cual es un pueblo industrial, con predominio de colores como el gris, negro, marrón, lo hace sentir que sea algo deprimente, aunque todo está referido al punto de vista de la protagonista. Otro aspecto que me llamó la atención es que el film tiene esa sensación de haberse filmado a finales de los 90 y mediados del 2000; el uso de la música, de las diferentes vestimentas de los personajes, de la manera de comportarse fue algo agradable y posiblemente hasta nostálgico. Ahora, con respecto a lo importante de esta producción, las escenas de terror van mejorando en el transcurso de la película, esto debido a que, mientras se va descubriendo el misterio de cómo y por qué ocurren las muertes, eso hace que aumente la calidad de las escenas, aunque eso sí, algunas son más impactantes que otras.

This film was directed by Corin Hardy, a British director with a short career behind the camera; "Whistle" is his third feature film. At times, this director employed an aesthetic that immediately reminded me of other British productions. I think the look of the setting—an industrial town dominated by colors like gray, black, and brown—gives it a somewhat depressing feel, although everything is seen from the protagonist’s point of view. Another aspect that caught my attention is that the film has that feel of having been shot in the late ’90s and mid-2000s; the use of music, the characters’ different outfits, and the way they behave was pleasant and perhaps even nostalgic. Now, regarding the most important aspect of this production, the horror scenes get better as the movie progresses. This is because, as the mystery of how and why the deaths occur is gradually unraveled, the quality of the scenes improves—though, to be sure, some are more shocking than others.

El guion, no diré que es el mejor o lo peor del film; cumple con los clichés que siempre están presentes en este tipo de producciones, en especial el motivo de cada personaje que lo impulsa a realizar diferentes actos que pueden llevarlo a su muerte o salvación; esa es una de las características positivas del guion, aunque su desarrollo no es para nada el mejor y eso es causado por la mala actuación de los protagonistas. Otro aspecto relevante del guion es la necesidad de hacer un cambio con respecto al destino de los personajes principales, en donde la mayoría se lleva a cabo en el tercer acto y, aunque primeramente me sorprendió dicha decisión, la realidad es que afecta la narrativa porque creo que le resta impacto al final y eso hace que el cierre de la historia sea simple, aburrido y predecible.

As for the screenplay, I won’t say it’s the best or the worst part of the film; it follows the clichés that are always present in this type of production, especially the motivation behind each character’s actions—motives that drive them to take different steps that may lead to their death or salvation. That’s one of the screenplay’s strengths, although its execution is far from the best, largely due to the poor performances of the lead actors. Another relevant aspect of the screenplay is the need to make a change regarding the fate of the main characters, most of which takes place in the third act. Although I was initially surprised by this decision, the reality is that it affects the narrative because I think it diminishes the impact of the ending, making the story’s conclusion simple, boring, and predictable.

No esperaba absolutamente nada de Whistle y al verla sentí que sabía qué tipo de película iba a consumir; es por eso que señalo a esta película como simplemente mala o, como siempre tiendo a clasificarlas, como producciones con un gran potencial que no es muy bien desarrollado, pero en esta oportunidad, creo que sí se intentó hacer una película buena, entretenida, pero lamentablemente tuvo una mala edición, un mal casting y, por supuesto, muy malas actuaciones, y eso es algo que personalmente no tiendo a señalar en este tipo de películas porque creo que cada actor está para cumplir un rol ya definido por la ley que hay que cumplir en un film de terror, pero en esta oportunidad la mayoría de los actores no cumplieron con la simple tarea de ser un cliché más. No puedo recomendar este film porque sé que hay otros también estrenados en este año que son mejores o simplemente más entretenidos y, aunque puedo entender a quienes les ha gustado, ya que trata de rememorar ese estilo del terror del 2000, pero la verdad es que no hay duda de que pudo ser mejor.

I wasn’t expecting anything at all from Whistle, and when I watched it, I felt like I knew exactly what kind of movie I was in for; that’s why I’d describe this film as simply bad—or, as I usually tend to classify them, as productions with great potential that isn’t very well developed. But in this case, I do think they did try to make a good, entertaining movie, but unfortunately it suffered from poor editing, poor casting, and, of course, very poor acting—and that’s something I personally don’t usually point out in this kind of movie because I believe every actor is there to fulfill a role already defined by the conventions of the horror genre, but in this case, most of the actors failed to even fulfill the simple task of being just another cliché. I can’t recommend this film because I know there are others released this year that are better or simply more entertaining, and although I can understand why some people liked it—since it tries to evoke that 2000s horror style—the truth is that there’s no doubt it could have been better.
