Ziam - Movie Review [ES - EN]

Zombies y Artes Marciales, esas fueron las características que me motivaron a ver "Ziam", producción tailandesa, original de Netflix estrenada el pasado mes de julio, pero en esta época de buscar que películas de terror que ver qué no sean consideradas como las mejores, decidí dar la oportunidad a este film que une muy bien los elementos de este tipo de films para su realización, al cual se le puede considerar como principal el de su corto presupuesto, pero también la necesidad de relatar una divertida historia de terror y acción.

Zombies and martial arts—those were the characteristics that motivated me to watch "Ziam", a Thai production originally released on Netflix last July. However, in this era of searching for horror movies to watch that are not considered the best, I decided to give this film a chance. It combines the elements of this type of film very well, which can be considered its main feature, given its short budget, but also the need to tell a fun story of horror and action.

El título de "Ziam", es una referencia a la antigua manera de como era conocida Tailandia antes de 1940, originalmente era llamada "Siam" pero el director Kulp Kaljareuk decidió cambia la "s" por una "z" de zombies y así obtener el título de este entretenido y divertido film que se desarrolla en un mundo distópico en dónde el calentamiento global origina una parcial destrucción del mundo afectando la vida de muchos, en especial a los múltiples habitantes de Bangkok quienes viven bajo el mandato de un régimen totalitario; justamente uno de los poderosos jefes de la organización, es infectado por un virus desconocido y trasladado hacia uno de los hospitales de esa ciudad, lo que no saben es que ese hombre se convertirá en el paciente cero originado la propagación de un patógeno que revive a los muertos y les genera una desenfrenada hambre; en ese momento, un ex peleador de Muay Thay, "Singh", su novia la doctora "Rin" y el niño "Buddy", deberán luchar contra una horda de zombies para poder sobrevivir.

The title "Ziam" refers to the old name for Thailand before 1940, which was originally called "Siam," but director Kulp Kaljareuk decided to change the "s" to a "z" for zombies, thus obtaining the title of this entertaining and fun film set in a dystopian world where global warming causes partial destruction of the world, affecting the lives of many, especially the many inhabitants of Bangkok who live under a totalitarian regime. One of the powerful leaders of the organization is infected by an unknown virus and transferred to one of the city's hospitals. What they don't know is that this man will become patient zero, causing the spread of a pathogen that revives the dead and gives them an uncontrollable hunger. At that moment, a former Muay Thai fighter, "Singh," his girlfriend, Dr. "Rin," and the boy "Buddy," must fight against a horde of zombies in order to survive.

Esta es de esas películas que no planeaba de ver, pero la premisa fue muy atrayente para mí, el elemento de las artes marciales como arma principal para que el héroe luche contra desenfrenados y hambrientos zombies fue más que suficiente y lo mejor de esta producción es que no escatima en dar lo que ofrece; primeramente está es una pequeña película, se nota que el presupuesto es justo al momento en que toda la acción ocurre en escenografías pequeñas lo cual me pareció perfecto por toda la tensión que se genera en el momento de huir o enfrentar a una horda de zombies; me gustó mucho la decisión del niño uso del CGI para generar los zombies y se usó el clásico elemento del maquillaje, esto hizo que el diseño sea con mucha sangre y terrorífico, esto es sin ninguna duda un elemento siempre a favor en las producciones asiáticas de este género del terror. Las escenas de acción son muy buenas, las coreografías son correctas, hay muy buenas peleas y por supuesto el uso del Muay Thay como arte marcial, ya que tanto las fuertes patadas, puños y en especial los codazos a los cráneos de los zombies pueden ser efectivas para enfrentarlos, así que la decisión de usar ese estilo de pelea fue más que correcto.

This is one of those movies I didn't plan on seeing, but the premise was very appealing to me. The element of martial arts as the hero's main weapon to fight against rampant and hungry zombies was more than enough, and the best thing about this production is that it doesn't skimp on what it offers. First of all, it's a small film, and you can tell that the budget is tight when all the action takes place in small sets, which I thought was perfect because of all the tension that is generated when fleeing or facing a horde of zombies. I really liked the decision to use CGI to generate the zombies and the classic element of makeup, which made the design very bloody and terrifying. This is undoubtedly an element that always works in favor of Asian productions in this horror genre. The action scenes are very good, the choreography is spot on, there are some great fights, and of course, the use of Muay Thai as a martial art, since strong kicks, punches, and especially elbow strikes to the zombies' skulls can be effective in confronting them, so the decision to use that fighting style was more than correct.

El guion me pareció bueno, es muy meticuloso en cumplir con los detalles o factores que conforman un film de zombies; me gustó que la historia se desarrolle en un mundo distópico o uno que se está preparando para una inevitable destrucción, justamente eso es lo que me pareció genial de la historia porque normalmente vemos a este tipo de producciones en donde las ciudades en dónde se origina el brote d ella infección de zombies, son en donde se cree que nada malo puede suceder, en cambio, en esta ciudad de Bangkok, todo está al borde de otro colapso más lo cual en mi opinión, un brote sería imposible de detener; otro aspecto positivo del guion es decidir que la historia sea relatada desde los puntos de vista de cada uno de sus personajes principales, raramente eso sucede, ya que todo es en conjunto o es el héroe quien lidera el relato y eso también sucede en este film, pero en muchas escenas, son los otros personajes quienes tiene la oportunidad de liderar la historia.

I thought the script was good. It is very meticulous in its attention to the details and elements that make up a zombie film. I liked that the story takes place in a dystopian world or one that is preparing for inevitable destruction. That's exactly what I thought was great about the story because we usually see these types of productions where the cities where the zombie infection outbreak originates are places where it is believed that nothing bad can happen. In contrast, in this city of Bangkok, everything is on the verge of yet another collapse, which in my opinion would make an outbreak impossible to stop. Another positive aspect of the script is the decision to tell the story from the point of view of each of its main characters. This rarely happens, as everything is usually told from a collective perspective or the hero leads the narrative, which is also the case in this film. However, in many scenes, it is the other characters who have the opportunity to lead the story.

"Ziam" fue una grata sorpresa, no esperaba absolutamente nada de esta película y me entretuvo en su hora y más de treinta minutos de duración; es un film bastante rápido, con un presupuesto corto, pero muy bien utilizado; con buenas y divertidas escenas de acción y también de tensión, suspenso y desesperación causada por el constante ataque de los zombies hacia los protagonistas y aunque siga pensando que cumple con los requisitos necesarios para este estilo de film, repito que es la manera de relatar la historia de sus personajes en una situación extrema y de supervivencia, lo que más me ha gustado, así como la poca necesidad de crear o mostrar un villano más que sea un obstáculo para su salvación, esa decís también me ha parecido genial porque le da protagonismo a los zombies que son muy buenos; su diseño grotesco, llenos de sangre, el contaste grito de animal hambriento, que sean rápidos, pero con nula inteligencia, esas son las características que me gustó de ver en esas criaturas y que están muy bien interpretadas; a pesar de todo eso, es correcto también decir que en el apartado emocional es donde en mi opinión falla porque no existe una buena actuación de los protagonistas en ese ámbito, esa emoción, el drama en momentos precisos creo que no existe o no cumplió con mis expectativas, aunque hay otras en donde si me pareció un trabajo bien realizado, más que nada cuando se enfoca en contar como un niño debe lidiar con un ataque de zombies. Posiblemente, esta no sea la mejor película, pero al ser de Netflix, siempre pienso en que sí, la película cumple con entretener, entonces yo la considero como buena y Ziam, me ha entretenido, me ha gustado y es posiblemente una de las sorpresas agradables de este mes del terror.

"Ziam" was a pleasant surprise. I had absolutely no expectations for this film, and it entertained me for its hour and thirty-minute runtime. It's a fairly fast-paced film with a low budget, but one that is very well used, with good, entertaining action scenes as well as tension, suspense, and despair caused by the constant zombie attacks on the protagonists. Although I still think it meets the necessary requirements for this style of film, I repeat that what I liked most was the way the story of the characters in an extreme situation of survival was told, as well as the lack of need to create or show a villain who is an obstacle to their salvation. I also thought that was great because it gives prominence to the zombies, who are very good; their grotesque design, covered in blood, the contrast of their hungry animal cries, the fact that they are fast but have no intelligence—these are the characteristics that I liked to see in these creatures, and they are very well interpreted. Despite all that, it's also fair to say that, in my opinion, it falls short in the emotional department because the protagonists don't perform well in that area. I think that emotion and drama at key moments are either non-existent or didn't meet my expectations, although there are other moments where I thought it was well done, especially when it focuses on how a child has to deal with a zombie attack. This may not be the best movie, but since it's from Netflix, I always think that yes, the movie does entertain, so I consider it good, and Ziam has entertained me, I liked it, and it's possibly one of the pleasant surprises of this month of horror.
