Don't mix my water with oil: Freaks (2018)
We return to the corner of the renegade, and with good reason. A pity, really, because it had a lot to offer and then they didn't know what to do with so much. It left me with almost the same wasted time feeling as The Empty Man, only this one really hurt, because it did have potential. Although what does deserve credit to Zach Lipovsky, Adam B. Stein, because Freaks has been the most remarkable work as independents and, despite not having the resources, they gave everything for this project. This story has many of the things I love: suspense, psychological horror and mystery; up to that point it was perfect, it was beautiful, it had it all... What's still missing? Well, they thought it would be a good idea to add a little science fiction, so it's not such a bad idea... right?... right?
Volvemos al rincón de los renegador, y con buenas razones. Una lástima, la verdad, porque tenía mucho que ofrecer y ya luego no supieron qué hacer con tanto. Me dejó casi misma sensación de pérdida de tiempo que El Hombre Vacío, solo que esta sí me dolió de verdad, porque sí tenia potencial. Aunque lo que sí merece crédito a Zach Lipovsky, Adam B. Stein, porque Freaks ha sido el trabajo más destacable como independientes y, a pesar de no contar con los recursos, dieron todo por este proyecto. Esta historia tiene muchas de las cosas que me encantan: suspenso, terror psicológico y misterio; hasta ahí era perfecta, era hermosa, lo tenía todo… a ¿Qué aun le falta algo? Bueno, pensaron que sería buena idea meterle un poco de ciencia ficción, así que no está tan mala la idea… ¿cierto?... ¿cierto?
Argument.
A father raises his little daughter in what seems to be a dilapidated house, prepares her for the outside world, although he won't let her out under any excuse. Chloe is a very intelligent and imaginative child, despite her father's multiple reasons why she should not leave the house or talk to anyone else, she always challenges him. A point that I found spectacular is that, between their training sessions they did yoga and he shouted expletives, those that children and some adults love to say to others without even knowing them; it was like an anti-bullying therapy to which Chloe reacted with laughter or with witty answers, but always from the margin of calm. That was what her father always focused on, not getting upset or annoyed by what they might say to her in a hurtful way.
Argumento.
Un padre cría a su pequeña hija en lo que parece, una casa en ruinas, la prepara para el mundo exterior, aunque este no la deje salir bajo ninguna excusa. Chloe es un niña muy inteligente e imaginativa, a pesar de que su padre le de las múltiples razones por las cuales no debe salir de la casa ni hablar con más nadie, ella siempre lo reta. Un punto que me pareció espectacular es que, entre sus entrenamientos hacían yoga y él le gritaba improperios, de esos que les encantan a los niños y a algunos adultos decirle a los demás sin siquiera conocerlos; era como una terapia antibullying a la que Chloe reaccionaba con risas o con respuestas ingeniosas, pero siempre desde el margen de la calma. En eso se enfocaba siempre su padre, en no alterarse o molestarse por lo que le pudieran llegar a decir de forma hiriente.
Imagination.
In this pseudo-apocalyptic environment, her father had to go out every so often to get supplies and Chloe would always ask him for ice cream or some knick-knacks, the usual, but he never remembered. The little girl would look out the window and see how the other children were running to the ice cream truck and she imagined that one of those girls was bringing her one... it came true. Within moments she had this little girl knocking on her door with her favorite ice cream, she also had her father and the girl's mother on top of her scared by the fact, to which the mother tells Chloe that she even looks like a normal child, what did she mean by that? After an awkward goodbye, Chloe's father scolds her and tells her she can't do "that" again and punishes her in her room. In this space Chloe has mixed emotions, sometimes she likes being there and other times, she is terrified of it, and the reason is the same: she always "imagines things" and ends up finding herself in situations with other people. So at this point we intuit that Chloe has a gift that, in a way, allows her to make what she thinks come true (yes, like Carrie).
Imaginación.
Entre este entorno pseudo apocalíptico, su padre tenía que salir cada cierto tiempo a buscar provisiones y Chloe siempre le pedía helado o algunas chucherías, lo típico, pero él nunca lo recordaba. La pequeña niña se asomaba en la ventana y veía como los demás niños iban corriendo al camión de helados y ella, imaginaba que una de esas niñas le traía uno… se le hizo realidad. A los pocos instantes tenía a esta niña tocando a su puerta con su helado favorito, también tenía encima a su padre y a la madre de la niña asustados por el hecho, a lo que la madre le dice a Chloe que hasta parece una niña normal, ¿qué quiso decir con eso? Luego de una despedida incómoda, el padre de Chloe la regaña y le dice que no puede hacer “eso” de nuevo y la castiga en su cuarto. En este espacio Chloe tiene emociones mezcladas, a veces le gusta estar ahí y otras, le aterroriza, y la razón es la misma: siempre “imagina cosas” y termina encontrándose en situaciones con otras personas. Así que en este punto intuimos que Chloe tiene un don que, de cierta forma, le permite hacer realidad lo que piensa (sí, a lo Carrie)
All for a simple ice cream.
Chloe is not happy with the situation and manages to escape from the room, she finds her father asleep on the couch, watching something on TV, the news was promising the extermination of something that the little girl did not understand. What she was really interested in was leaving the house to get her ice cream, and the truck was strangely always outside her house. The ice cream man seemed nice, but it gave her the feeling that something wasn't right with him; still, she got her ice cream and went home happy. After another scolding from her father for sneaking out of the house, he locks her in the room again, but Chloe freaks out, her thoughts get out of control and she almost kills her father.
Todo por un simple helado.
Chloe no se queda contenta con la situación y logra escapar de la habitación, se encuentra con su padre dormido en el sofá, veía algo en la televisión, las noticias auspiciaban el exterminio de algo que la pequeña no entendía. Lo que a ella le interesaba en sí, era salir de casa a buscar su helado y el camión extrañamente siempre estaba afuera de su casa. El hombre del helado parecía amable, pero daba esa sensación de que algo no estaba bien con él; aun así, obtiene su helado y regresa feliz a casa. Luego del nuevo regaño de su padre por escaparse de la casa, la vuelve a encerrar en la habitación, pero Chloe enloquece, sus pensamientos se salen de control y casi mata a su padre.
Chaotic world.
After some false apologies from Chloe, she drugs her father to make him fall asleep and run away with Mr. Snowcone. He sees that the world was not as his father described it to him, but he saw many signs and billboards with strange messages. The man explains to Chloe that there are different people, like them, that the rest of the world doesn't understand and wants to lock them up just because they have special powers and that, with her help, he will be able to free his daughter from that prison. Oh yes, Chloe's mother is not dead, as her father told her, she is alive, locked up and the ice cream guy is her grandfather. I don't think even La Rosa de Guadalupe would have dared to do so much.
Mundo caótico.
Luego de unas disculpas falsas de Chloe, droga a su padre para que se quede dormido y escaparse con Sr. Snowcone. Ve que el mundo no era como su padre se lo describía, pero veía muchas señales y vallas con mensajes extraños. El hombre le explica a Chloe que existen personas distintas, como ellos, que el resto del mundo no comprende y los quiere encerrar solo porque tienen poderes especiales y que, con su ayuda, él podrá liberar a su hija de esa prisión. Ah, sí, la madre de Chloe no ha muerto, como le contó su padre, está viva, encerrada y el tipo de los helados es su abuelo. Creo que ni La Rosa de Guadalupe se hubiese atrevido a tanto.
Let's get to work.
After her little escapade, dad gets upset again and now he has to find a new hiding place for his daughter, but the police are already after them. Things get out of control, Chloe already knows the truth about her mother and wants to rescue her, although her father does not believe that she is still alive; his daughter shows him that this time he is right and that she must be saved. Here begins a fight between the "Freaks" and the humans.
Chloe's powers are impressive, she can control with her mind whoever she wants at any distance, in fact, she is the only one able to "enter" the fortress where her mother is locked up; her father's powers are also amazing, he can manage time; and the grandfather is not far behind either, the old man can become invisible and have super speed. Yes, people, I'm describing the super family.
Manos a la obra.
Luego de su pequeña escapada, papá se vuelve a molestar y ahora tiene que buscar un nuevo escondite para su hija, pero ya la policía está tras ellos. Las cosas se salen de control, ya Chloe sabe la verdad sobre su madre y quiere rescatarla, aunque su padre no crea que aun siga viva; su hija le muestra que esta vez sí tiene razón y que hay que salvarla. Aquí empieza una lucha entre los “Freaks” y los humanos.
Los poderes de Chloe son impresionantes, puede controlar con su mente a quien quiera a cualquier distancia, de hecho, es la única capaz de “entrar” a la fortaleza donde se encuentra encerrada su madre; los de su padre también son sorprendentes, puede manejar el tiempo; y el abuelo tampoco se queda atrás, el viejito puede hacerse invisible y tener super velocidad. Sí, gente, les estoy describiendo a la súper familia.
In the end, the inevitable war happens (fantastic, I do not deny it), unfortunately the only one who survives is Chloe and when she was about to be exterminated, her mother just arrives creating a supernova, exploding everyone around her and taking her daughter in her arms while they fly over a burning city. The end. There is no more and it was missing a lot. In fact, I think they could have done more, handled those resources better and directed the story so that it wouldn't have such a bland and abrupt ending. While it is true that the film has a modest score (4.2/5), personally, I feel it is high for the little development there was. I mean, where did the Freaks come from?, why did they hate each other so much instead of working together?, why didn't the father stop time to save his wife?, why didn't Super Mom escape when she was so powerful?, why did Chloe's father hide the truth from his daughter?, and on and on and on with all the unknowns I was left with. Here as I tell you, it looks like a bad science fiction film, but seriously it started and handled as a horror and mystery, it seemed to throw more to the paranormal than to science fiction, in fact, it has many scenes that made me give that jump of fright; but from one moment to another, they decided to give a very sudden turn without giving many explanations or make something clear to the viewer. Besides, sympathy for Chloe is forced, and the truth is that the girl is very heavy, fussy and, at a certain point, evil and capricious; but as she is a little girl without a mother and misunderstood, you have to give her ice cream to calm her down. I feel that, if from the beginning the father had given Chloe the blessed ice cream, the movie would have to end, they would have been left with nothing, that's why they made the little girl so... bitchy. I repeat: not even La Rosa de Guadalupe would have dared to do so much. So, this time it won't be like I always say: "If you haven't seen it, don't see it, and if you have already seen it, don't see it again, don't waste your time".
Al final, pasa la inevitable guerra (fantástica, no lo niego), lastimosamente la única que sobrevive es Chloe y cuando iba a ser exterminada, justo llega su madre creando una supernova, explotando a todos a su alrededor y llevándose a su hija en brazos mientras sobrevuelan una ciudad en llamas. Fin. No hay más y faltó mucho. En realidad, creo que pudieron hacer más, manejar mejor esos recursos y direccionar mejor la historia para que no quedara con un final tan soso y abrupto. Si bien es cierto que el film tiene una puntuación modesta (4.2/5), en lo personal, siento que es alta para el poco desarrollo que hubo. Es decir, ¿de dónde salieron los Freaks?, ¿por qué tanto odio, en vez de trabajar juntos?, ¿por qué el padre nunca detuvo el tiempo para salvar a su esposa?, ¿por qué súper mamá no había escapado, siendo tan poderosa?, ¿por qué el padre de Chloe le ocultó la verdad a su hija?, y no paren de contar con el montón de incógnitas con las que quedé. Aquí como se los cuento, parece un film de ciencia ficción malo, pero en serio se empezó y manejó como de terror y misterio, parecía tirar más a lo paranormal que a la ciencia ficción, de hecho, tiene muchas escenas que me hicieron dar ese brinquito del susto; pero de un momento a otro, decidieron darle un giro muy repentino sin dar muchas explicaciones o dejarle algo claro al espectador. Además de que se fuerza la simpatía hacia Chloe, y la verdad es que la niña es muy pesada, quisquillosa y, en cierto punto, maléfica y caprichosa; pero como es una niñita sin mamá e incomprendida, hay que darle su heladito para que se calme. Siento que, si desde un principio el padre le hubiese dado el bendito helado a Chloe, se tendría que acabar la película, se hubiesen quedado sin nada, por eso hicieron a la niña tan… malcriada. Repito: ni La Rosa de Guadalupe se hubiese atrevido a tanto. Así que, esta vez no será como le digo siempre: “Si no la han visto, no la vean, y si ya la vieron, no la vuelvan a ver, no pierdan su tiempo.”
