don't want to play anymore: Hide and Seek (2005)
Thanks to a cyber friend who shared with me a 15-hour playlist (someday I will be able to finish listening to it in its entirety), she has excellent musical taste and posted many (if not all) songs that I love. Music is magic, I've always said it, and among the many reasons why I take refuge in it, is because it makes me remember those things I've forgotten. I was just listening to one of those many songs that came out back in the 2000's, when most of us were "Emos", and it was one of the songs that was in a movie that I loved. Back then, the only movies these eyes were watching, were horror, horror and suspense. I watched that movie again (I'll talk about it later), and obviously the algorithm subtly "suggests" the next movie for you to watch, I could finally be thankful that this happened, because this film I always got it already ending on TV. "Isa, but why hadn't you searched for it on streaming?" Because I'm crazy and I forgot😅... and because I'm watching Bones for the third time. The point is that I was finally able to watch Hide and Seek from beginning to end, and I was able to affirm again my taste and devotion for psychological thrillers. Directed by John Polson and scripted by Ari Schlossberg, this story of mystery and suspense will play with our minds until the end, and it also stars the excellent Robert De Niro and Dakota Fanning.
Gracias a una amiga cibernética que me compartió una playlist de 15 horas (algún día podré terminar de oírla completa), tiene un excelente gusto musical y colocó muchísimas (por no decir todas) canciones que me encantan. La música es mágica, siempre lo he dicho, y entre las tantas razones por las que me refugio en ella, es porque me hace recordar esas cosas que he olvidado. Justo estaba escuchando una de esas tantas canciones que salieron por ahí en los 2000, cuando la mayoría éramos “Emos”, y era una de las canciones que salía en una película que me encantó. Por ese entonces, las únicas películas que estos ojos veían, eran terror, horror y suspenso. Vi esa película otra vez (luego hablo de ella), y obvio el algoritmo “sugiere” sutilmente la siguiente película para que veas, por fin pude agradecer que esto sucediera, porque este film siempre lo conseguía ya finalizando en la televisión. "Isa, ¿pero por qué no la habías buscando en el streaming?" Porque soy loca y se me olvidó😅… y porque estoy viendo por tercera vez Bones. El punto es que por fin pude ver de principio a fin Mente Siniestra, y pude afirmar nuevamente mi gusto y devoción por los thrilers psicológicos. Bajo la dirección de John Polson y el guion de Ari Schlossberg, esta historia de misterio y suspenso jugará con nuestras mentes hasta el final, además de que cuenta con las protagonizaciones del excelente Robert De Niro y Dakota Fanning.
Argument.
After the sudden suicide of David's wife, Emily is traumatized by the chilling scenario and is hospitalized for a while in the hospital where her father works (he is a psychologist). David thinks it's best to move somewhere quiet and away, so they move to a huge house on the outskirts of the city, a nice town full of woods and seemingly friendly people. Almost immediately, Emily starts behaving very strangely and her father tries to find out what's wrong with her.
Argumento.
Luego des repentino suicidio de la esposa de David, Emily queda traumatizada por el escalofriante escenario y es internada un tiempo en el hospital donde trabaja su padre (es psicólogo). David cree que lo mejor es irse a un sitio más tranquilo y alejados, así que se mudan a una enorme casa a las afueras de la ciudad, un bonito pueblo lleno de bosque y con personas aparentemente amables. Casi en seguida, Emily comienza a comportarse una manera muy extraña y su padre intenta saber qué le ocurre.
I made a new friend.
Emily has somewhat rebellious attitudes, normal but annoying for a 9 year old. She responds defiantly, ignores, doesn't talk and, now, no longer wants to play with her dolls. The latter seems to please her father, who sees it as a sign of progress, although his daughter reveals that the reason is because she has already made a new friend, Charlie. At first David doesn't think much of it because he thinks it's an imaginary friend. Although he is no slouch either, he also made a new friend (Elizabeth) in town and she always takes care of his niece (Amy). An important detail here is that both are very similar to his late wife and daughter.
Hice un nuevo amigo.
Emily tiene actitudes un tanto rebeldes, las normales pero molestas para ser una niña de 9 años. Responde desafiante, no hace caso, no habla y, ahora, ya no quiere jugar con sus muñecas. Esto último parece alegrar a su padre, lo ve como una señal de avance, aunque su hija le revela que la razón es porque ya hizo un nuevo amigo, Charlie. Al principio David no le da mucha importancia porque cree que se trata de un amigo imaginario. Aunque él tampoco se queda atrás, también hizo una nueva amiga (Elizabeth)en el pueblo y ella cuida siempre a su sobrina (Amy). Un detalle importante aquí, es que ambas son muy parecidas a su difunta esposa y su hija.
A thousand eyes.
True is that saying: "small town, big hell". Several people seem to have a particular interest in father and daughter, especially with Emily, David on several occasions gets Emily talking to some of these people and he suspects that someone must be the famous Charlie that his daughter talks so much about. The truth is that they all act very suspicious and do some questionable things, which makes David very suspicious.
Mil ojos.
Cierto es ese dicho: “pueblo pequeño, infierno grande”. Varias personas parecen tener particular interés en padre e hija, sobre todo con Emily, David en varias oportunidades consigue a Emily hablando con algunas de estas personas y él sospecha que alguien debe tratarse del famoso Charlie de quien su hija tanto habla. La verdad es que todos ellos actúan muy sospechosos y hacen cosas cuestionables, que hacen estar en alerta a David.
It wasn't me.
The nights become strange and murky. From Emily playing hide and seek and finding a hidden basement, to reenactments about his mother's suicide. David always wakes up at the same time, 2:06 am to find these grotesque scenes in the bathroom, and with no one else home, he always thinks it was all Emily's doing. When he asks her for explanations, he never finds answers, his daughter only tells him that she can't tell him the truth and that she wouldn't understand. Things are getting out of control, and David suspects that she is one of the neighbors, she is always on the lookout for his daughter, as if stalking her.
No fui yo.
Las noches se tornan extrañas y turbias. Desde Emily jugando escondidillas y encontrando un sótano oculto, hasta representaciones sobre el suicidio de su madre. David siempre se despierta a la misma hora, a las 2:06 am para encontrarse con estas escenas grotescas en el baño, y al no haber más nadie en casa, siempre piensa que todo fue obra de Emily. Al momento de él pedirle explicaciones, nunca encuentra respuestas, su hija solo le dice que no puede decirle la verdad y que no lo entendería. Ya las cosas se están saliendo de control, y David sospecha que es una no los vecinos, siempre está muy al pendiente de su hija, como acechando.
To sleep.
One detail that I forgot to tell you is that since they arrived in town, David has been spending a lot of time in his office, making a lot of notes about what has been happening to him since they arrived, a kind of diary. Also that he has recurring dreams about something that happened at a party with his wife (that's why he always wakes up at the same time).
David's friend Elizabeth wants to smooth things over with Emily and goes to visit them, but ends up meeting Charlie, as Emily had warned her that she would end up just like her mother. Elizabeth's disappearance drives David crazy, he doesn't understand anything, and even believes that his own daughter became a murderer. Suddenly, when he enters his office, he realizes that he never unpacked his things, he never wrote the diary, he also remembers what happened to his wife and Elizabeth (he killed them both), and that's when Charlie comes to light again.
A dormir.
Un detalle que se me pasó por alto contarles, es que desde que llegaron al pueblo, David pasaba mucho tiempo en su despacho, tomaba muchas anotaciones sobre lo que le pasaba desde que llegaron, una especie de diario. También que tiene sueños recurrentes sobre algo que ocurrió en una fiesta con su esposa (por eso siempre despierta a la misma hora).
La amiga de David, Elizabeth, quiere limar asperezas con Emily y va a visitarlas, pero termina conociendo a Charlie, ya Emily le había advertido que terminaría igual que su madre. La desaparición de Elizabeth hace enloquecer a David, no entiende nada, y hasta cree que su propia hija se convirtió en asesina. De repente, al entrar a su despacho, es cuando se da cuenta que nunca desembaló sus cosas, nunca escribió el diario, también recuerda qué fue lo que ocurrió con su esposa y con Elizabeth (a ambas las mató), y es entonces cuando Charlie vuelve a salir a la luz.
Although the film leaves a lot of loose ends about the strange neighbors, the effort to make us believe that it was all paranormal phenomena, or that it was Emily's work, was remarkable and appreciated. I really came to suspect that anyone could be Charlie, and while I would have liked to know why these people were so weird. Also to know what happened to the neighbors, we know their daughter had died and they were still grieving, but it also seemed that the husband was abusive and was becoming a bit of a stalker to Emily. Small details that would not have changed the plot at all, but would have given more value to the plot; that is, they are two parents who lost their little daughter, next to a father and daughter who lost their wife and mother. I would strengthen it a little more, I don't know, I've already tangled myself, forget it🙃. I love stories involving dissociative personality disorders, it fills me with enormous curiosity. And doing a little research, this one in particular, had several outcomes, giving it a plus, a little wink to the same disorder, although with the same end: Emily inheriting her father's condition; so we could keep the ending that best suits us. So, as I always say: "If you haven't seen it, see it, and if you have already seen it, see it again, you can't miss it".
Aunque el film deja muchos cabos sueltos sobre los extraños vecinos, el empeño por hacernos creer que todo se trataba de algún fenómeno paranormal o, que sí era obra de Emily, fue notable y se agradece. De verdad llegué a sospechar que cualquiera podría ser Charlie, y aunque me hubiese gustado saber porqué esa gente era tan rara. También saber qué pasó con lo vecinos, sabemos que su hija había muerto y aún sufrían el luto, pero también parecía que el esposo era maltratador y estaba convirtiéndose un poco en acosador de Emily. Pequeños detalles que no hubiesen cambiado para nada la trama, pero le hubiese dado más valor a trama; o sea, son dos padres que perdieron a su pequeña hija, al lado de un padre y a una hija que perdieron a esposa y madre. Reforzaría un poco más, no sé, ya me enredé yo misma, olvídenlo🙃. Me encantan las historias que involucren trastornos de personalidad disociativa, me llena de enorme curiosidad. E investigando un poco, esta en particular, tuvo varios desenlaces, dándole un plus, un pequeño guiño al mismo trastorno, aunque con el mismo fin: Emily heredando la condición de su padre; entonces podríamos quedarnos con el final que mejor nos acomode. Así que, como le digo siempre: “Si no la han viso, véanla, y si ya la vieron, vuélvanla a ver, no tiene perdida de nada.”
