Women who speak their minds: The Helps (2011)
"-And did you know as a child that you were going to be a servant?
-Yes, Miss, I did.
-And you knew because...?
-My mother was a servant, my grandmother was a domestic slave. Slave... domestic.
-Do you dream of being something else?"

Obviously I'm going to love stories about strong women, obviously I'm going to love them even more if they are based on books or real events and obviously I'm going to watch those stories adapted to the screen a lot of times. There are many destinies and lives to which I refer, but these in particular, are some of my favourites, beyond the underlying message; Tate Taylor made magic with The Help (adaptation of the book of the same name written by Kathryn Stockett in 2009). The book in itself caused a stir, because despite being a historical fiction, it touched on sensitivities that even today, gives a lot to talk about: racism and servitude (not to be confused with housekeeping or the cleaning lady), there was even a lawsuit for that, although it didn't proceed because it had no basis or something similar. Another detail I loved about this adaptation was the cast: Emma Stone, Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, Bryce Dallas Howard, Jessica Chastain, among other excellent appearances; and I must clarify that no matter what film it is or what role she plays, Octavia will always steal the show, the looks and our hearts.
Obvio que voy amar las historias de mujeres fuertes, obvio que me van a encantar más si estas se basan en algún libro o en hechos reales y obvio que me voy a ver un montón de veces esas historias adaptadas a las pantallas. Son muchos destinos y vidas a los que me refiero, pero estas en especial, son unas de mis favoritas, más allá del mensaje de fondo; Tate Taylor hizo magia con Historias Cruzadas (adaptación del libro homónimo escrito por Kathryn Stockett en el 2009). Ya de por sí el libro ocasionó gran revuelo, porque a pesar de tratarse de una ficción histórica, tocó susceptibilidades que aun en la actualidad, da mucho de qué hablar: racismo y servidumbre (no confundir con ama de llaves o la señora de limpieza), hasta una demanda hubo por eso, aunque no procedió por no tener sustento o algo parecido. Otro detalle que me encantó de esta adaptación, fue el elenco: Emma Stone, Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, Bryce Dallas Howard, Jessica Chastain, entre otras excelentes apariciones; y aclaro que no importa de qué film se trate o qué papel interprete, Octavia siempre se robará el show, las miradas y nuestros corazones.
Argument.
Eugenia "Skeeter" (Emma) is a Southern girl from Jackson, Mississippi, home from college, and the only one in town who is still a spinster and childless, her dream is to be a writer in New York, but she needs a good story to get noticed. Luckily for her, she lives in a place where she has a lot of material to cut to get that story, but her only problem is that she is trying to write from the point of view of how the coloured servants are treated by their ladies, and they fear for their lives.
Argumento.
Eugenia “Skeeter” (Emma) es una chica sureña de Jackson (Mississippi) que regresa de la universidad, y es la única del pueblo que aún sigue solterona y sin hijos, su sueño es ser escritora en Nueva York, pero necesita una buena historia para que la puedan notar. Para su “suerte” vive en un lugar donde tiene mucha tela que cortar para obtener esa historia, pero su único problema es que ella intenta escribir sobre el punto de vista del trato que reciben la servidumbre de color de sus señoras, y éstas temen por sus vidas.
One step at a time.
Although it didn't seem like it at the time, Skeeter had landed the perfect job: editor of a column on grooming. Of course, she didn't know much about it, so she asked her best friend Elizabeth to let her talk to her maid about helping her with the column, which she obviously didn't like very much, but she agreed. This was Skeeter's chance to convince Aibileen (Viola) to tell her story, not only to help her, but to show the reality in which they live. Although Aibi is terrified, she accepts and gives her a written account of her stories, Aibileen has always loved to write and from time to time she writes her prayers to God and her memoirs. It is only a short time before Minny (Octavia), Aibi's best friend and the best cook among all the maids, discovers them, scolds them and sits down to tell her own story. I just love Minny, she could carry the stories if she wanted to, her personality is strong, but with just the right touch of touchiness.
Un paso a la vez.
Aunque no lo pareciera en el momento, Skeeter había conseguido el trabajo perfecto: redactora de una columna sobre aseo. Obvio que ella no sabía muy bien sobre eso, así que le pidió a su mejor amiga Elizabeth que le dejara hablar con su sirvienta para que la ayudara con la columna, obvio no le agradó mucho la idea, pero aceptó. Esta era la oportunidad para Skeeter para convencer a Aibileen (Viola) de que cuente su historia, no solo para ayudarla, sino para mostrar la realidad en la que viven. A pesar de que Aibi está aterrada, acepta y le entrega un escrito de sus historias, a Aibileen siempre le ha encantado escribir y de vez en cuando le escribe sus plegarias a Dios y sus memorias. Pasa poco tiempo para que Minny (Octavia), la mejor amiga de Aibi y la mejor cocinera entre todas las sirvientas, las descubra las regañe y se siente a contar su propia historia. Simplemente amo a Minny, podría llevar las historias si quisiera, su personalidad es fuerte, pero con un toque justo de susceptibilidad.
A facade.
As it was customary in the 1960s for everything to be perfect, the ladies of the house always demanded that their "maids" keep everything immaculate, bring up their children because they were too busy doing anything other than domestic duties... in short, they all had to appear perfect to each other. Skeeter was no exception, she had to be careful because Hilly (Bryce) controlled everything (there's always someone who thinks she's better than everyone else). In fact, Hilly came up with the fantastic idea of "separate but equal", a slogan she used to promote her bathroom for the servants outside the house. This was one of the many raindrops that made Minny quit in a masterful way and many other maids wanted to tell their stories as well.

Como era habitual en los años 60 que todo fuese que perfecto, las señoras de casa siempre exigían a sus “empleadas” mantener todo inmaculado, criar a sus hijos porque ellas estaban muy ocupadas haciendo cualquier otra cosa que no fuera una obligación doméstica… en fin, tenían que aparentar perfección todas entre ellas. Skeeter no era la excepción, tenía que andarse con cuidado porque Hilly (Bryce) controlaba todo (nunca falta quien se crea más que los demás). De hecho, Hilly se creó la fantástica idea de “separados, pero iguales”, lema que usaba para promocionar su baño para la servidumbre fuera de casa. Esta fue una de las tantas gotas que hacía llover el vaso, lo que hizo que Minny renunciara de manera magistral y que muchas otras empleadas domésticas quisieran contar también sus historias.
Teachings.
The domestics were mainly hired to cook and raise the ladies' babies, the latter being the hardest for them because they knew that when they grew up they would be just like their mothers. Skeeter knew this too, she was raised by Constantine, but the two adored each other and she taught Skeeter great things, spoiling her as if she were her own daughter even as an adult. Constantine was unjustly dismissed by Skeeter's mother and died soon after from grief. This was kept from Skeeter, who was told only that she had resigned and moved in with her daughter. Eugenia needed one last story to be published, her story, and she begged to know what happened to Constantine... and was heartbroken to find out. Only Aibileen would understand that feeling, she loved every baby she raised as if it were her own and they always ended up being taken away from her when she was no longer useful to their mistresses.
Enseñanzas.
Las domésticas eran principalmente contratadas para cocinar y criar a los bebés de las señoras, esto último era lo más duro para ellas porque sabían que cuando crecieran serían iguales a sus madres. Skeeter también sabía de eso, fue criada por Constantine, pero ambas se adoraban y ella le enseñó grandes cosas a Skeeter, la consentía como si fuera su propia hija aun cuando ya era adulta. Injustamente Constantine fue despedida por la madre de Skeeter y murió al poco tiempo de tanta tristeza. Esto se lo ocultaron a Skeeter, que solo le dijeron que había renunciado y se mudó con su hija. Eugenia necesitaba una última historia para que la publicaran, su historia, y rogó por saber qué fue lo que le ocurrió a Constantine… y terminó con el corazón destrozado al saberlo. Solo Aibileen sabría entender ese sentimiento, amó a cada bebé que crio como si fuera propio y siempre terminaban por arrebatárselos cuando ya no les servía a sus señoras.
A sure thing.
He already had many stories, like good and beautiful memories, like bitter and painful ones, even the funniest ones he could tell. But they were things so pointed, so intimate that, if the book was published, everyone in Jackson would know all about them and go after them, but Minny... my God, Minny was a goddess and she had an ace up her sleeve that insured them all. After her farewell episode at Mrs. Hilly's house, she went to bring her a cake to apologise; being the best cook in all of Jackson, even proud Hilly couldn't resist. He rudely told Minny that he would take her back, but he would pay her less, this made her furious, she didn't want him to give her a job again, she only wanted one thing with the cake: to eat her excrement. The most epic scene in the film. This fact gave them a huge guarantee, Hilly wouldn't let anyone know that she ate "black shit", so when someone said that "she looks like...", Hilly would immediately shut everyone's mouth. It was a great move, albeit a double-edged one.
Un seguro.
Ya tenía muchas historias, como buenos y hermosos recuerdos, como los amargos y dolorosos, hasta los más graciosos que pudieran contar. Pero eran cosas tan puntuales, tan intimas que, si se publicaba el libro, todos en Jackson sabrían todo e irían tras ellas, pero Minny… Dios mío, Minny era una diosa y tenía un As bajo la manga que las aseguraba a todas. Luego del episodio de su despedida en la casa de la Sra. Hilly, fue a llevarle un pastel para disculparse; siendo la mejor cocinera de todo Jackson, ni siquiera la orgullosa Hilly pudo resistirse. Groseramente le dijo a Minny que la aceptaba de regreso, pero le pagaría menos, esto la hizo enfurecer, ella no pretendía que le diera de nuevo trabajo, solo quería una cosa con el pastel: que se comiera su excremento. La escena más épica del film. Este hecho les daba una enorme garantía, Hilly no permitiría que nadie supiera que comió “mierda negra”, así que cuando alguien dijera que “se parece a…”, enseguida callera Hilly a cerrarle la boca a todo el mundo. Era una gran jugada, aunque de doble filo.
In the end, they ended up publishing the book and it was a total success, although it was very controversial, of course Hilly went crazy and did just what Minny said he would do, deny to the death that those stories were based on Jackson. Minny went on to work as a domestic for Celia (Jessica) and was accepted as an equal and valued with much love and appreciation; Skeeter got a job as a prominent writer in New York; and Aibileen was fired because of Hilly, but it was her chance to make way for her dream of becoming a writer.
Al final, terminan de publicar el libro y fue un total éxito, aunque fue muy controversial, por supuesto Hilly enloqueció e hizo justo lo Minny dijo que haría, negar hasta la muerte que esas historias eran basaban en Jackson. Minny siguió trabajando como doméstica para Celia (Jessica) y fue aceptada como igual y valorada con mucho cariño y aprecio; Skeeter consiguió empleo como destacada escritora en Nueva York; y Aibileen fue despedida por culpa de Hilly, pero fue su oportunidad para darse paso a cumplir su sueño: convertirse en escritora.
Despite being a story of self-improvement, the message is clear and direct (and it would be superfluous for me to say what it is). But, beyond the obvious, we can also see the great social pressure on society women. Yes, even though they did nothing at home, they struggled silently among themselves to have the best servants to keep their homes perfect; they had to be involved in every kind of social activity to secure a position, even if it did not secure them anything; to suffer in silence losses to keep their husbands happy (as in the case of Celia who had already lost 4 babies); to do everything as dictated by social norms, to get married, have babies and be perfect. All these were their only aspirations in life, a bit empty and lonely, because in the end there was no real friendship or bond of loyalty. It is also somewhat impressive that this novel has brought so much buzz, despite its relatively recent debut (2009). It reminds me of an anecdote I once heard: "if Mrs Rosa leaves, they all leave the house", referring to a mother complaining to her children for bothering the housewife. Because yes, there are still ladies dedicated to cleaning and maintaining homes, but they are more appreciated nowadays, although with their exceptions, of course, not everything is rosy. But it is a good example that serves to compare the same work in different eras, and while it is true that much has been fought for equal rights to reach what we have today, there is still a long way to go, thanks to the square minds that are still out there. Once again, an iconic film with many stories that invite us to reflect and to change the way we see the world, despite beyond our noses; so, as I always say: "If you haven't seen it, see it, and if you have already seen it, see it again, you can't lose anything".
A pesar de ser una historia de superación, el mensaje es claro y directo (y estaría de más que diga cuál es). Pero, más allá de lo obvio, también podemos ver la gran presión social que recaía en las mujeres de sociedad. Sí, a pesar de que no hicieran nada en casa, luchaban en silencio entre ellas por tener a la mejor servidumbre que le mantuvieran a la perfección sus hogares; debían estar metidas en cualquier tipo de actividades sociales para refirmar un puesto, aunque no les aseguraran nada; sufrir en silencio pérdidas para mantener a sus esposos felices (como el caso de Celia que ya había perdido a 4 bebés); hacer todo como lo dictara las normas sociales, casarse, tener bebés y ser perfectas. Todo eso eran sus únicas aspiraciones en la vida, un poco vacías y solitarias, porque al final no existía un verdadera amistad o vínculo de lealtad. También es algo impresionante que esta novela haya traído tanto revuelo, a pesar de que haya debutado relativamente reciente (2009). Me hace recordar una anécdota que escuché una vez: “si la señora Rosa se va, se me van todos de la casa”, haciendo referencia a una madre quejándose con sus hijos por molestar a la ama de casa. Porque sí, aún hay señoras dedicadas a la limpieza y mantenimiento de los hogares, pero estas son más apreciadas en la actualidad, aunque con sus excepciones, claro, no todo el color de rosa. Pero es un buen ejemplo que nos sirve para comparar la misma labor en distintas épocas, y si bien es cierto que se ha luchado mucho por lograr derechos de igualdad para llegar a lo que se tiene hoy en día, aún queda un largo camino por recorrer, gracias a las mentes cuadradas que aún quedan por ahí. Una vez más, un film icónico con muchas historias que nos invitan a reflexionar y a cambiar nuestra forma de ver el mundo, a pesar más allá de nuestras narices; así que, como le digo siempre: “Si no la han viso, véanla, y si ya la vieron, vuélvanla a ver, no tiene perdida de nada.”
