Wonderful Things Will Happen: Jim and the Giant Peach (1996)

Hello, cinephiles! Doing some research for the previous review, I had told you that it was by my favorite director of all time: Tim Burton. And although this particular film is directed by Henry Selik, it was produced by Burton and is totally his essence from beginning to end. Jim and the Giant Peach was the first "Burton" animation I was able to see and love; it's an adaptation of a Roald Dahl children's book, filled with everything this genius of the seventh art loves: lots and lots of fantasy, tragedy, teachings and, of course, a happy ending for everyone. I remember seeing it when I was just 6 years old, and watching it again when I was almost 30, I surprised myself by remembering every song (yes, I know I've told you countless times that I don't like musicals, but being a Disney children's movie, it's impossible that it doesn't have a charming musical in it). And well, much praise, it's already very clear that I love Burton and anything he does, so let's get to what we came for...

¡Hola, cinéfilos! Investigando un poco para hacer el review anterior, les había comentado que era de mi director favorito de todos los tiempos: Tim Burton. Y aunque este film en especial es dirigido por Henry Selik, lo produjo Burton y está totalmente su esencia en de principio a fin. Jim y el Durazno Gigante fue la primera animación de “Burton” que pude ver y amar; se trata de una adaptación de un libro infantil de Roald Dahl, llena de todo lo que le encanta a este genio del séptimo arte: muchísima fantasía, tragedia, enseñanzas y, por supuesto, un final feliz para todos. Recuerdo haberla visto cuando tenía apenas 6 años, y al verla de nuevo a mis casi 30, me sorprendí a mí misma recordando cada canción (sí, sé que les he dicho infinitas veces que no me gustan los musicales, pero tratándose de una película infantil de Disney, es imposible que no lleve un musical encantador). Y pues, mucha alabanza, ya quedó muy en claro que amo a Burton y cualquier cosa que haga, así que a darle a lo que vinimos…

The story.

Pure, obvious fantasy. James (Jim), our protagonist, is a little boy with big dreams, loving parents but with a very sad and unfortunate destiny, who had to stay with his terrible aunts (why are the aunts always the bad ones?). In spite of being a child, as I told you, he had deep desires that were trampled every moment by the evil ones: he wanted to go to New York, land "where dreams come true".

La historia.

Fantasía pura, obvio. James (Jim), nuestro protagonista, es un pequeño niño con grandes sueños, padres amorosos pero con un destino muy triste y desafortunado, al que le tocó quedarse con sus terribles tías (¿por qué siempre serán las tías las malas?). A pesar de ser un niño, como les dije, tenía deseos profundos que eran pisoteados a cada instante por las maléficas: quería ir a New York, tierra “donde los sueños se hacen realidad”.

A cruel fate or... isn't it?

Jim was almost the slave of Spiker and Sponge, he had to do everything while they were living the good life; he suffered all kinds of mistreatment and humiliation. But we already know that in this kind of stories bad things happen to good people; that's why Jim is introduced to a good man, a magician perhaps (they don't make it very clear), who gives him a bag full of "crocodile tongues". These shiny little creatures are made of very powerful ingredients, but at the same time, they're very unruly and tremendous, so they'll fulfill the wishes of anything that comes their way. Jim, of course, was fascinated by the idea and keeps them, but loses them in an instant.

Un destino cruel o… ¿no?

Jim era casi que el esclavo de Spiker y Sponge, tenía que hacer de todo mientras ellas se daban la buena vida; sufría todo tipo de maltratos y humillaciones. Pero ya sabemos que en este tipo de historias a las personas buenas, les ocurren cosas malas; por eso a Jim se le presenta un buen hombre, un mago tal vez (no lo dejan muy en claro), que le obsequia un bolsa de repleta de “lenguas de cocodrilo”. Estos pequeños y brillantes seres, están hechos con ingredientes poderosísimos, pero al mismo tiempo, son muy revoltosos y tremendos, así que cumplirán los deseos de cualquier cosa que se les presente en el camino. A Jim, por supuesto, le fascino la idea y se queda con ellos, pero los pierde en un instante.

"Wonderful things will happen".

This phrase, together with another one, is very often present in the whole story, said that man. And as if it were a prediction, an old and dry tree began to grow a huge peach. The aunts wanted to get rich with it, but Jim was already facing the path of his destiny. This is where the great adventure full of fantasy begins.

“Cosas maravillosas pasarán”

Esta frase junto a otra, se hacen presente muy seguido en toda la historia, lo dijo aquel hombre. Y como si de una predicción se tratara, de un viejo y seco árbol empezó a crecer descomunalmente un durazno. Las tías quisieron hacerse ricas con él, pero Jim ya tenía de frente el camino de su destino. Es aquí donde comienza en sí la gran aventura llena de fantasía.

You reap what you sow.

Jim for some reason enters the peach tree, encountering giant insects. Anyone his age would do the same thing he did: get scared out of their wits, but these huge creatures were his friends, they wouldn't hurt him. And together they set off on their journey from London to New York... yes, in the giant peach, flying through the air with 100 seagulls.

Cosecha lo que siembras.

Jim por alguna razón entra al durazno, consiguiéndose con insectos gigantes. Cualquiera que tuviera su edad, haría lo mismo que él: asustarse de miedo, pero estos seres inmensos eran sus amigos, no lo lastimarían. Y juntos emprenden su viaje desde Londres a New York… sí, en el durazno gigante, volando por los aires con 100 gaviotas.

To tell you the whole adventure would lose its spark. I feel that this story (and many others) is like art: "everyone gives it the meaning they want". What I could tell you is that it has many lessons and reflections that make me wonder: if we were told that kind of things as children, what happened to us on the way to forget it? What am I getting at? We have always been told (as adults) that dreaming is useless, that having crazy ideas is crazy, that many of the things we think are meaningless or useless; but in this and many other stories, we are shown that it is possible, no matter what age we are. The impressive thing about this film is that it shows you with facts, even though it is "fantasy", if you think about it logically, dreams do come true.

Contarles toda la aventura, perdería su chispa. Siento que esta historia (y muchas otras), es como el arte: “cada quien le da el sentido que quiera”. Lo que sí podría decirles es que tiene muchas lecciones y reflexiones, que me hacen cuestionarme: si de niños nos decían ese tipo de cosas, ¿Qué nos pasó en el camino para olvidarlo? ¿A qué voy con esto? Siempre nos han dicho (ya de adultos) que soñar no sirve de nada, que tener ideas descabelladas con cosas de locos, que muchas de las cosas que pensamos no tienen sentido o no sirven para nada; pero en esta y muchas otras historias, nos muestran que sí es posible, tengamos la edad que sea. Lo impresionante de este film, es que te lo muestra con hechos, muy a pesar de que sea “fantasía”, si lo piensas desde lo lógico, sí se hacen realidad los sueños.

I told you the "magic" word: logical. You know that I almost always look for the psychological explanation in my reviews, this will be no exception. Let's start at the beginning: the plot presents us that Jim's parents are devoured by a great storm in the form of a Rhinoceros. This being will always be used as a mechanism to induce fear and terror in Jim (whether or not it was a real storm that took Jim's parents, it is obvious that they died after planning a dream) when he dares to say his dreams or what he wants. This minimizes anything he wants and becomes a kind of inner demon for Jim. That is why in one of the final scenes there is the struggle between the Rhino and Jim as he is arriving in New York (he is again invaded by the memory that dreaming will bring him tragedy and death), we see nothing but the boy fighting against all his fears.

Les dije la palabra “mágica”: lógico. Saben que casi siempre busco la explicación psicológica en mis review, esta no será la excepción. Comencemos por el principio: la trama nos presenta que los padres de Jim son devorados por una gran tormenta en forma de Rinoceronte. Este ser siempre será usado como mecanismo para inducir miedo y terror a Jim (sea o no una tormenta real lo que se llevó a los padres de Jim, es obvio que murieron luego de planear un sueño) cuando se atreve a decir sus sueños o lo que desea. Esto minimiza todo lo que él quiera y se convierte en una especie de demonio interno para Jim. Por eso en una de las escenas finales se presenta la lucha entre el Rino y Jim al estar llegando a New York (lo invade nuevamente el recuerdo de que soñar le traerá tragedia y muerte), no vemos más que al niño luchando contra todos sus miedos.

In other scenes we witness how the insects (who are supposed to be adults), close themselves to many things or get obstacles in many things, Jim with simple ideas solves things. It shows that, certainly, when we become adults and we are faced with a problem, the world collapses and we do not see that the answer is simpler than we think, we just "have to see it from another perspective" (the other phrase that will accompany us in the storyline).

En otras escenas presenciamos cómo los insectos (que se supone, son adultos), se cierran a muchas cosas o consiguen obstáculos en muchas cosas, Jim con ideas sencillas soluciona las cosas. Muestra de que, ciertamente, cuando nos volvemos adultos y nos encontramos ante un problema, se nos derrumba el mundo y no vemos que la respuesta es más sencilla de lo que pensamos, solo “hay que verlo desde otra perspectiva” (la otra frase que nos acompañará en la trama).

The mouse company, when it has set its mind to it, has succeeded: it has taught us many, many things; and I think I have also mentioned it, but many of its films may not be "childish", they show us or remind us of "the simple things in life". Too bad the industry has become a coven and they forgot that magical and simple detail.

La empresa del ratón cuando se lo ha propuesto, lo ha logrado: nos ha enseñado muchísimas cosas; y creo que también lo he mencionado, pero muchas de sus películas quizás no sean “infantiles”, nos muestran o recuerdan “las cosas simples de la vida”. Lástima que la industria se ha convertido en un aquelarre y olvidaron ese mágico y sencillo detalle.

To close, seeing another joint work of Selik and Burton, is pure magic, and discovering that one of their first works, was for me my first steps in the world of animation, gives it more value. Let yourself go, face your Rhino, revive your inner child and enjoy this wonderful work, as I always say: "if you haven't seen it, see it, and if you have already seen it, see it again, you can't lose anything".

Para ir cerrando, ver otro trabajo en conjunto de Selik y Burton, es magia pura, y descubrir que uno de sus primeros trabajos, fue para mí mis primeros pasos en el mundo de la animación, le da más valor. Déjense llevar, enfrenten a su Rino, reavivan a su niño interior y disfruten de esta maravillosa obra, como siempre les digo: “si no la han visto, véanla, y si ya la vieron, vuélvanla a ver, no tiene pérdida de nada”.
