You didn't get it: Poor Things (2023)

After getting through the respective mental meltdowns of the month, and after learning that they were releasing this film on Star+, I finally got to see this spectacular. I was already aware of all the winning nominations it had, so I was even more excited and honestly felt I enjoyed it like I hadn't enjoyed a film of this genre in a long time. Poor Things was already making waves long before its release, and director Yorgos Lanthimos made this adaptation of Alasdair Gray's novel of the same name and how! You can feel in every frame that he treated it like his own baby. In addition to the genius of this director, he had a unique and spectacular cast: Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo, William Dafoe, and others who were at the height of the whole project.

Luego de pasar los respectivos colapsos mentales del mes, y después de enterarme de que estrenarían este film en Star+, por fin pude ver esta espectacularidad. Ya estaba enterada de todas las nominaciones ganadoras que tuvo, así que me emocionó más y sinceramente sentí que la disfruté como hacía mucho que no lo hacía con una película de este género. Pobres Criaturas ya estaba dando de qué hablar mucho antes de su estreno, y es que el director Yorgos Lanthimos hizo esta adaptación de la novela homónima de Alasdair Gray ¡y de que manera! Se siente en cada fotograma que lo trató como a su propio bebé. Además de la genialidad de este director, contó con un reparto único y espectacular: Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo, William Dafoe, y demás que estuvieron a la altura de todo el proyecto.

Beginning - First steps.

We were presented with a most peculiar fantasy story, as "the life of a girl in the body of a woman facing life" or as "the Frankenstein woman". The reality could not be further from this brief description, although a little accurate. Full of symbolism and messages like poisoned darts that go straight to our senses, I could not help but be surprised with every part of this wonderful story. And that's why many viewers didn't understand the real message behind those beautiful surreal landscapes.

Inicio – Primeros pasos.

Nos presentaban una historia de fantasía de lo más peculiar, como “la vida de una niña en el cuerpo de una mujer que se enfrenta a la vida” o como “la mujer Frankenstein”. La realidad no puede estar más alejada de esta breve descripción, aunque si un poquito acertada. Llena de simbolismos y mensajes como dardos envenenados que van directo a nuestros sentidos, no pude dejar de sorprenderme con cada parte de esta maravillosa historia. Y es por eso que muchos espectadores no entendieron el verdadero mensaje tras esos hermosos paisajes surrealistas.

It is not only about God Baxter's experiment, which turned out to be a complete success, it is about what happens from that moment on. And here it fits perfectly that phrase that "it only happens to you once in a lifetime", that's how important Bella was in the lives of those around her. In that first part, in which we see a baby Bella trying to discover her little much, ignorant of so many things, but eager for adventures; and it is just that characteristic in her personality, what made Bella grow. We can even see represented in those grayscales, how little Bella knew in that little enclosed world. And even though God (her creator) gave her all the knowledge she demanded, he knew deep down that it would never be enough. It was impossible for him not to create that father-daughter bond, even though he himself said that his own father was not fatherly at all, but he did teach her everything he knew.

No solo se trata del experimento de God Baxter, que resultó ser un completo éxito, es lo que a partir de ese momento ocurre. Y aquí cabe perfecto esa frase de que “solo te sucedo una vez en la vida”, así de importante era Bella en la vida de quienes la rodearon. En esa primera parte, en la que vemos a una Bella bebé tratando de descubrir su pequeño mucho, ignorante de tantas cosas, pero ávida de aventuras; y es justo esa característica en su personalidad, lo que hizo a Bella crecer. Incluso podemos ver representado en esas escalas de grises, lo poco que Bella conocía en ese pequeño mundo encerrada. Y a pesar de que God (su creador) le brindara todos los conocimientos que ella le exigiese, él sabía en el fondo que jamás sería suficiente. Le fue imposible no crear ese vínculo padre-hija, a pesar de que él mismo decía que su propio padre no era para nada paternal, pero sí le enseñó todo lo que sabía.

Lisbon - Discovery.

The moment in which Bella discovers "how to be happy whenever she wants", became decisive, because beyond the fact of getting to know her sexuality, she begins to question the norms of society. Something as natural and normal as masturbating was taboo before and even now. Those incongruities of society in the face of life seemed illogical to Bella and that is why her desire to escape to the world and try to understand it grows. And that's what Duncan was there for, to show her the pleasures of the world and its wonders, selling himself as the best lover in the world and warning Bella not to fall in love with him... the poor guy didn't know where he was going or who he was messing with. Bella considers herself free, therefore, she will do what she wants when she pleases, that's why she doesn't stop when she is only living on the pleasures that Duncan can give her and they end up annoying her.

Lisboa - Descubrimiento.

El momento en el que Bella descubre “cómo hacerse feliz cuando quiera”, se volvió decisivo, porque más allá del hecho de ir conociendo su sexualidad, ella empieza a cuestionarse las normas de la sociedad. Algo tan natural y normal como el masturbarse, era tabú antes y aun ahora. Esas incongruencias de la sociedad ante la vida, le parecían ilógicas a Bella y por eso crece su deseo de escapar al mundo y tratar de entenderlo. Y para eso estaba Duncan, para enseñarle los placeres del mundo y sus maravillas, vendiéndose como el mejor amante del mundo y advirtiéndole a Bella que no se enamorara de él… el pobre no sabía ni dónde ni con quién se estaba metiendo. Bella se considera libre, por lo tanto, hará lo que quiera cuando le plazca, por eso no se detiene al estar solamente viviendo de los placeres que le puede brindar Duncan y le terminan por fastidiar.

Alexandria - Suffering.

This stage is decisive for Bella, well, all of them actually; only this part of her life, she has to face a dark reality. While traveling with Duncan, Bella, meets a couple of wonderful characters (I loved them) and at the same time so disparate: a high society literate old lady who lives out her days at ease reading her many, many books on philosophy, and a young companion with whom they have long discussions about life itself. This part is so revealing and overwhelming for Bella that she finds it extremely painful and suffers immensely when she discovers that life is not as beautiful as her new friend's books describe it. Poor Bella seeing the human misery (just a fragment) the impossibility of helping, makes her enter into an existential crisis where she ends up opening her eyes and realizing that she left the prison of her home, to the prison of a crying Duncan (yes, the sex God ended up falling in love with Bella).

Alejandría - Sufrimiento.

Esta etapa es decisiva para Bella, bueno, todas en realidad; solo que esta parte de su vida, le toca enfrentarse a una oscura realidad. Mientras viaja con Duncan, Bella, conoce a un par de personajes maravillosos (los amé) y a la vez tan dispares: una anciana letrada de alta sociedad que vive sus días a gusto leyendo sus muchísimos libros sobre filosofía, y un joven acompañante con el que tienen largos debates sobre la vida misma. Esta parte es tan reveladora y abrumadora para Bella, que le resulta en extremo doloroso y sufre inmensamente al descubrir que la vida no es tan hermosa como la describen los libros de su nueva amiga. La pobre Bella al ver la miseria humana (un fragmento apenas) la imposibilidad de ayudar, la hace entrar en una crisis existencial en donde termina de abrir los ojos y darse cuenta de que salió de la prisión de su casa, a la prisión de un llorón Duncan (sí, él Dios del sexo se terminó enamorando de Bella).

Paris - Awakening.

This little emotional outburst, led Bella and Duncan to poverty. But Bella's cunning was greater than the adversity, she understands that to get money fast she has to do something she loves, so she becomes a prostitute and this ends up driving Duncan crazy. The emotional shock that Bella lives in the brothel was huge, understanding that not everyone was going to treat her like Duncan in intimacy was horrible for her. With all that, Bella adapts her role to her needs; she took it upon herself to get to know her clients by offering more than just sex: she knew about their memories as children, she knew something about their lives and made them laugh, she knew their true desires, something no other prostitute did. With this valuable information, she knew right away that "she would be her own means of production" and with that money she would pay for her medical studies (she admired God very much and wanted to be like him).

París - Despertar.

Este pequeño arrebato emocional, llevó a Bella y a Duncan a la pobreza. Pero la astucia de Bella era mayor a la adversidad, entiende que para conseguir dinero rápido tiene que hacer algo que ella le encanta, así que se vuelve prostituta y esto termina enloqueciendo a Duncan. El shock emocional que vive Bella en el prostíbulo fue enorme, entender que no todos la iban a tratar como Duncan en la intimidad fue horrible para ella. Con todo y eso, Bella adapta su papel a sus necesidades; se encargó de conocer a sus clientes ofreciendo algo más que sexo: sabía de sus recuerdos de niños, sabía algo de sus vidas y los hacía reír, sabía sus verdaderos deseos, algo que ninguna otra prostituta hacía. Con esta información valiosa, supo enseguida que “sería su propio medio de producción” y con ese dinero costearía sus estudios de medicina (admiraba mucho a God y quería ser como él).

London - Liberation.

Bella never forgot God, she always sent postcards telling him about every discovery and he felt all those experiences as his own. So many emotions together, plus the experiments his father had done on him, took their toll on God: a metastasized cancer had him in agony, but greater was the pain of not having Bella by his side. These scenes are overwhelming and full of reflection. Bella learns that she is his mother and his daughter at the same time; she knows that God condemned her and at the same time saved her, gave her a life; that he loved her and accepted her for who she was, not just for being a successful experiment... she understood that he was really her father and forgave him.

Londres - Liberación.

Bella nunca se olvidó de God, siempre enviaba postales contándole cada descubrimiento y él las sentía como propias todas esas experiencias. Tantas emociones juntas, más los experimentos que había hecho su padre en él, le pasaron factura a God: un cáncer con metástasis lo tenía en agonía, pero mayor era el dolor de no tener a Bella a su lado. Estas escenas son abrumadoras y llenas de reflexión. Bella se entera que es su madre y su hija al mismo tiempo; sabe que God la condenó y al mismo tiempo la salvó, le dio una vida; que él la amó y la aceptó por quien era, no solo por ser un experimento exitoso… entendió que él era realmente su padre y lo perdonó.

The ending of this story is a bit complicated, you would think something would happen, but it ends up being something very different, it could be interpreted in several ways, but the closest I found is that it was about her consolidation as a medical student and scientist.

El final de esta historia es un poco complicado, pensarías que pasará algo, pero termina por ser algo muy distinto, podría ser interpretado de varias formas, pero la más cercana que le encontré es que se trataba de su consolidación como estudiante de medicina y científica.

While there have been many, many reviews and memes mocking the plot, I sin of being pedantic and I dare say that they did not understand anything of what they saw. It is life itself that we see here: how women face the adversities of life in wanting to be free, the sexual discovery of women, how men (and society in general) react to women's sexuality and the way they choose to live. Those aspects that should be normal nowadays, already bothered and bothered since centuries ago, and that is why Bella's rebelliousness and her constant struggle to break those absurd rules that did not allow her to live life as she wanted; in her way to discover the world, she learned and accepted equally the good and the bad of things. She did not fall into social banalities, she was not interested in them; and that did not make her selfish or libertine, everything Bella did was the means to an end that she herself wanted since she became aware: to be simply herself with all that being a woman in the Victorian era entailed. This story is about liberation and the awakening of female empowerment. That they used sex to discomfort? They use it for many things and even worse, why not use it as a message of female freedom, why is something natural a taboo subject? What makes me wonder for a long time: why does it bother so much that women do whatever they want? We would enter into political, religious and social debates, and we would still not arrive at a concise and precise answer without falling into the same previous points. We are still dealing with the socially acceptable canons of women; they say nothing if a man is unfaithful, but if it is the woman, it blows up the world! And the worst thing is that many women also fall into the same point of pointing the finger at another. This topic is long, and it would even be tedious for Bella herself, so you just have to limit yourself to enjoy this wonderful story that made me laugh, cry, get angry, reflect, get confused... in short, it made me feel a lot of things that I had not felt in a movie for a long time. I would even dare to say that Poor Things has entered my list of favorite films (and yes, it means I will watch it millions of times), so, as I always say: "If you haven't seen it, see it, and if you have already seen it, see it again, you can't miss it".

Si bien han salido muchísimas críticas y memes burlándose de la trama, peco de ser pedante y me atrevo a decir que no entendieron en absoluto nada de lo que vieron. Es la vida misma lo que vemos aquí: el cómo la mujer se enfrenta a las adversidades de vida al querer ser libre, al descubrimiento sexual de la mujer, al cómo los hombres (y la sociedad en general) reaccionan a la sexualidad de la mujer y a la forma en que ella decide vivir. Esos aspectos que deberían ser normales hoy en día, ya molestaban e incomodaban desde siglos atrás, y por eso la rebeldía de Bella y su lucha contante por romper esas normas absurdas que no le permitían vivir la vida como ella quería; entre su camino por descubrir el mundo, ella aprendió y aceptó por igual lo bueno y lo malo de las cosas. No caía en banalidades sociales, no le interesaba; y eso no la convertía en egoísta o libertina, todo lo que Bella hacía era el medio para un fin que ella misma quiso desde que tomó conciencia: ser simplemente ella con todo lo que conllevaba ser una mujer en la época victoriana. Esta historia es de liberación y despertar del empoderamiento femenino. ¿Que usaron el sexo para incomodar? Lo usan para muchas cosas y hasta peores, ¿por qué no usarlo como mensaje de libertad femenina?, ¿por qué algo natural es tema tabú? Lo que me hace preguntarme desde hace muchísimo tiempo: ¿por qué molesta tanto que la mujer haga lo que le de la gana? Entraríamos en debates políticos, religiosos y sociales, y aun no se llegaría a una respuesta concisa y precisa sin caer en los mismos puntos anteriores. Aun lidiamos con los cánones socialmente aceptables de las mujeres; no dicen nada si un hombre es infiel, pero si es la mujer, ¡revienta el mundo! Y lo peor es que muchas mujeres también caen en el mismo punto de estar señalando a otra con el dedo. Este tema es largo, y hasta sería tedioso para la misma Bella, así que solo hay que limitarse a disfrutar esta maravillosa historia que me hizo reír, llorar, enfurecer, reflexionar, confundirme… en fin, me hizo sentir muchísimas cosas que hacía tiempo una película no me llegaba así. Me atrevería a decir que, incluso, Poor Things entró en mi lista de films favoritos (y sí, significa que la veré millones de veces), así que, como le digo siempre: “Si no la han viso, véanla, y si ya la vieron, vuélvanla a ver, no tiene perdida de nada.”
