The series “El polígamo” is an adaptation of a novel, in which many parts were modified to bring it to the screen. This series features 22 episodes filled with suspense, anger, despair, adultery, and drugs. “El polígamo” tells the story of Joyce, a woman with a successful career and a seemingly perfect family—an influencer who has made a living through advertising, but without revealing what’s really going on in her life and her family. Just as with Joyce, this happens to many influencers in this world who often hide what’s going on in their lives and mask their pain with a fake smile in front of the cameras. And as I’ve always said, nothing is what it seems, and not all that glitters is gold.

Joyce's family finds itself caught up in a rumor that, at first glance, doesn't seem like a big deal, but then it makes its way onto the screens, and that's when their ordeal begins. There are many factors at play in this series, but the first centers on her husband, Jonasi—a powerful man who commits adultery left and right, someone who doesn’t care about the consequences; he just wants to enjoy the moment. This is how he becomes involved with many women in his life and hides a past that isn’t what he actually presents himself to be. Joyce’s life falls apart when she discovers her husband’s infidelity, but this doesn’t hit her full force at first—only when she learns that his mistress is pregnant and he decides to practice polygamy, a custom in South Africa that allows a man to have more than one wife. That’s how her life begins to spiral out of control after she allows this terrible decision to happen.

After all these twists and turns, this woman learns about her husband’s past marriages, children from other women—many of whom are still alive today—and, as if that weren’t enough, the countless lies he tells to make her believe him: the typical narcissist, chauvinist, and womanizer who wants to be with everyone without considering the consequences. This series shows us just how powerful social media can be, how much a woman is expected to endure for love and to maintain her status—as well as to protect what belongs to her children. At the end of this story, what many expected happens, and what makes this story compelling is the way everything unfolds and, ultimately, the fact that everything in life comes at a price.

La serie “El polígamo” es una adaptación en relación con una novela, en donde muchos de los fragmentos de la misma fueron modificados para poder traerla a las pantallas. Esta serie muestra 22 capítulos llenos de suspenso, rabia, desesperación, adulterio y drogas. El polígamo narra la historia de Joyce, una mujer con una carrera exitosa y una familia a todo dar, una influencer que ha ganado su vida a partir de publicidades, pero sin dar a entender lo que sucede realmente en su vida y su familia. Así como sucede con Joyce, le pasa a muchas personas influencer de este mundo que muchas veces esconden lo que pasa en sus vidas y disfrazan el dolor de una sonrisa fingida ante las cámaras, y como siempre he dicho, nada es lo que parece y no todo lo que brilla es oro.

La familia de Joyce se ve involucrada en un rumor que a simple vista no parece ser tan grande, pero luego atraviesa las pantallas y es cuando empieza su calvario. Dentro de esta serie podemos involucrar muchos factores, pero el primero se basa en su esposo Jonasi, un hombre de poder que comete adulterio a diestra y siniestra, una persona a la que no le importa qué puede suceder más adelante, solo quiere disfrutar el momento. Es así como se involucra con muchas mujeres en su vida y esconde un pasado que no es el que presenta realmente. La vida de Joyce se derrumba al descubrir la infidelidad de su esposo, pero esto a ella no le toma al comienzo de lleno, solo cuando se entera de que la amante de este está en embarazo y cuando decide conformar la poligamia, la cual es una práctica que se realiza en Sudáfrica que consiste en que un hombre pueda tener más de una esposa. Es así como su vida empieza a estar en picada tras permitir esta terrible decisión.

Después de tanta trama, esta mujer se entera de matrimonios pasados, hijos de otras mujeres, muchas de ellas en la actualidad, y, por si fuera poco, de la cantidad de mentiras que su esposo hace para que crea en él, el típico narcisista, machista y hombre rabo verde que quiere estar con todas sin saber las consecuencias. Esta serie nos muestra qué tan fuertes pueden ser las redes sociales, qué tanto está permitido soportar a una mujer por amor y por mantener su estatus, además por proteger lo que a sus hijos les pertenece. Al final de esta historia sucede lo que muchos esperaban y lo que atrapa a esta historia es la forma en que se desarrolla todo y, finalmente, que todo en esta vida se paga.

The Gomora family gets caught up in so many things that, in the end, karma catches up with them in the worst possible way. By this I mean that not everything we see at first glance is what it seems; maybe they’re sincere at times, but not everything we see on screen is true. In this series, we get a close-up look at the inner workings of a family with a power broker, as well as how everything can be resolved if you have the money. In this series, I’d highlight the passion and intrigue that each protagonist brings to the scenes; it really has a great cast and direction, though for me, one of the most powerful scenes is the ending—when not even Jonasi himself saw it coming—but there’s always someone who makes you pay for what you do in life.

What I didn't like about a certain part of this series was the backstory involving the main character, since it makes me realize that no one is truly anyone's friend and that secrets will eventually come to light; the truth doesn't always stay hidden—everything eventually comes out. The mistress’s role was incredible; moreover, the way she draws attention to herself without investigating the kind of person she’s dealing with—since many of the men seem loving at first—and then we come to understand her true identity.

In a nutshell, I can say that the series really kept me hooked, and I was able to finish it in three days—since it’s short and the episodes are relatively short—plus I was always on the edge of my seat wondering what would happen next; in my opinion, there aren’t any dull moments in this series. I hope that none of the women reading this ever encounter a narcissist like Jonasi Gomora. It’s also always a good idea to get to know the person by your side before the worst happens—and, on top of that, let’s not let love blind us to the point where we put up with and accept things that will ultimately hurt us.

La familia Gomora se ve envuelta en tantas cosas, que al final el karma llega de la peor manera. Con esto quiero decir que no todo lo que vemos a simple vista es lo mejor; quizás en oportunidades sean sinceros, pero no todo a través de pantalla es cierto. En esta serie podemos ver de cerca cómo es la parte interna de una familia con apoderado, también cómo a todo se le consigue un punto final si tenemos el dinero en mano. En esta serie puedo destacar la pasión, la intriga que le ponen cada protagonista a las escenas; de verdad que un buen reparto y puesta en escena, aunque para mí una de las escenas más poderosas tiene que ver con el final, cuando ni el mismo Jonasi se lo esperaba, pero siempre hay alguien que te hace pagar lo que haces en vida.

Lo que sí no me gustó de cierta parte de esta serie fue la historia que traía de hace tiempo el protagonista, ya que me hace ver que nadie es amigo de nadie y que los secretos algún día saldrán a la luz; no siempre la verdad se queda en un lugar tranquilo, todo sale a la luz. La participación de la amante fue increíble; además, su forma de llamar la atención sin investigar la clase de persona que tiene al frente, ya que muchos de los hombres se muestran amorosos al comienzo; luego entendemos su verdadera identidad.

En pocas palabras, puedo decir que la serie sí me mantuvo enganchada y me la pude terminar en 3 días, ya que es corta y sus capítulos son relativamente moderados, además de que siempre estaba en suspenso con lo que venía; a mi parecer, no hay huecos de aburrimiento para esta serie. Espero que todas las mujeres que me leen no se encuentren con un narcisista como Jonasi Gomora. Además, es bueno siempre investigar a la persona que tenemos a neustro lado antes que suceda lo peor, y por si fuera poco, no dejemos que el amor nos ciegue a tal forma de soportar y aceptar cosas que nos harán daño al final.
