2012 (2009) | Nattosheru Review [ENG/SPA]

I think everyone will share with me this fact that there was a while back when there was a lot of talk about the "end of the world" and that 2012 would be a key date for humanity and all that. While I remember almost nothing of what my childhood was like, I do remember seeing this movie where you see how the world goes into complete chaos with that date by name. I only know that I have seen it many times before and even after that famous year, as well as how much fun I had watching said movie either alone or with my family. The funny thing about all this is that, if I'm not mistaken, it's from 2012 onwards that I can slightly remember certain things from my past (maybe I'm just saying this to exaggerate, since I even forget what I ate last night). But well, out of all the commotion and events that happened -and didn't happen too-, what was left from that year is this great movie, which curiously has been strongly criticized in theaters for its script and its story. However, when I saw it today, I knew once and for all how much I was fascinated by this audiovisual work. I will give you my opinion about the rest later on, but one thing that is certain is that this film is one of the best that have been produced in the science fiction genre and especially in the subgenre of catastrophes. A film that only serves to spend a long entertaining time with an audiovisual spectacle, nothing more.

Starting with the story they try to tell us in this film, we see how in 2012 a science fiction writer named Jackson Curtis learns that the world will come to an end after a series of events that are occurring in the city of Los Angeles, precisely in Yellowstone National Park where our protagonist takes his two children, Noah and Lily to camp. When they come across what used to be a lake with a beautiful landscape, but is now a deserted and steamy site with a dead animal, they come across a group of military men who take them to a base located in the center of the park. There is geologist Navraj Singh, who recognizes the writer as a fan of his only exemplary book. He tells them that they are conducting an investigation into what is happening there, but the reality is that they are gathering evidence to make sure how much time the planet has left before it comes to an end. Jackson returns with his children and they meet a somewhat strange (not to say completely insane) gentleman. Later that night, the writer meets again with the guy who is actually Charlie Frost, announcer of the radio station he frequents most in his job as a private chauffeur. On this station he talks about what the U.S. government is hiding and what will happen to Los Angeles and the rest of the world in just a few hours.

Creo que todos compartirán conmigo este hecho que hubo hace un tiempo en el que se hablaba mucho del “fin del mundo” y de que el año 2012 sería una fecha clave para la humanidad y todo eso. Si bien no recuerdo casi nada de lo que fue mi infancia, sí recuerdo haber visto esta película en la que se ve cómo el mundo se vuelve un completo caos con esa fecha por nombre. Solo sé que la he visto muchas veces antes e incluso después de aquel famoso año, así como también lo bien que me lo pasé viendo dicha película ya sea solo o con mi familia. Lo curioso de todo esto es que, si no me equivoco, es desde el 2012 en adelante que puedo llegar a recordar levemente ciertas cosas de mi pasado (puede que solo diga esto para exagerar, ya que a mí se me olvida hasta lo que comí anoche). Pero bueno, de entre tanto revuelo y sucesos que ocurrieron -y no ocurrieron también-, lo que quedó de ese año es esta grandiosa película, la cual curiosamente ha sido fuertemente criticada en cines por su guión y por su historia. Sin embargo, al día de hoy cuando la ví supe de una vez lo mucho que me fascinó esta obra a nivel audiovisual. De resto ya les daré mi opinión más adelante, pero de algo que sí es seguro es que esta cinta es de las mejores que se han producido del género de la ciencia ficción y sobre todo del subgénero de catástrofes. Una película que solo sirve para pasar un largo rato entretenido con un espectáculo audiovisual, sin más.

Empezando por la historia que nos intentan contar en esta película, vemos cómo justamente en el año 2012 un escritor de obras de ciencia ficción llamado Jackson Curtis se entera de que el mundo llegará a su fin luego de una serie de sucesos que están ocurriendo en la ciudad de Los Ángeles, justamente en el Parque Nacional de Yellowstone donde nuestro protagonista lleva a sus dos hijos, Noah y Lily a acampar. Al encontrarse con lo que antes era un lago con un paisaje hermoso, pero ahora es un sitio desértico y repleto de vapor con un animal muerto, se topan con un grupo de militares que los llevan a una base que se encuentra en el centro del parque. Allí está el geólogo Navraj Singh, quien reconoce al escritor al ser fan de su único libro ejemplar. Él les dice que están realizando una investigación acerca de lo que está sucediendo en el lugar, pero la realidad es que están recabando pruebas para asegurarse de cuánto tiempo le queda al planeta antes de que llegue a su fin. Jackson regresa con sus hijos y se encuentran con un señor un tanto extraño (para no decir que es un completo loco). Más tarde, en esa misma noche, el escritor se encuentra de nuevo con el tipo quien en realidad es Charlie Frost, locutor de la estación de radio que más frecuenta en su trabajo como chofer privado. There are a couple of things I would like to say about this story. Aside from its certain similarity to the previous film that the same director produced called The Day After Tomorrow, what struck me the most is the way they made this film as engaging as possible, at least with its first hour. While I find the introduction to be a bit long, I suppose for the film itself it suits it well. What I would have liked is that they didn't include certain scenes that in the end are just filler, but I see that it's a habit of Roland Emmerich himself to tell several stories at once in a single film. And while we have the POV of the geologist who works for the U.S. government where he tries to correct his mistake by discovering long ago that the world will come to an end; we also have the POV of the writer in which we see him discover what will happen soon and try to save his family. But we also see different POV's of people who are apparently the relatives or acquaintances of the characters we mentioned at the beginning. On the one hand I understand that this serves to give us some context of each one and try to develop their main characters well, but I consider that abusing so many secondary scenes just to lengthen more than necessary this film is what I like the least. It is true that there are several valuable lessons among these different stories told, as is the case of the value of life, love and parenthood.

Now let's talk about the characters, which in this case I consider they did a better job than in their previous installment of natural disasters. I say this mainly because of the excellent work of John Cusack who plays the writer Jackson Curtis. While I don't know much about his acting career, among the few films I have seen him in I have noticed that he has a style and charisma that engages the viewer and in this work is no exception. He does well as the typical father who neglects his children and lives alone after divorcing his ex. Instead of being unemployed, he is a little-known writer who works as a private chauffeur for a Russian businessman in Los Angeles. He is practically the perfect profile for this film in which he will save his family from the end of the world. I have already said before what I think about this kind of plots where the protagonist always has problems with his family and only when a world catastrophe occurs is that he manages to solve those problems and they unite at the end. Returning to the subject of the characters, there is another one that caught my attention because he gave it that comic touch that worked very well at least during the first hour of the movie -which is the time in which he appears-. I'm talking about the announcer Charlie Frost, the typical crazy eccentric who talks about conspiracy theories and who curiously knows all about the end of the world in this film.

Hay un par de cosas que me gustaría decir sobre esta historia. Aparte de su cierta similitud a la anterior película que el mismo director produjo llamada The Day After Tomorrow, lo que más me llamó la atención es la forma en la que hicieron esta película lo más atractiva posible, al menos con su primera hora. Si bien considero que la introducción es un tanto larga, supongo que para la película en sí le queda bien. Lo que sí me hubiera gustado es que no incluyeran ciertas escenas que al final solo sirven de relleno nomás, pero veo que ya es un hábito del mismo Roland Emmerich de contar varias historias a la vez en una sola película. Y es que si bien tenemos el POV del geólogo que trabaja para el gobierno estadounidense donde intenta corregir su error al descubrir hace tiempo que el mundo llegará a su fin; también tenemos el POV del escritor en el que lo vemos descubrir lo que sucederá dentro de poco e intentara salvar a su familia. Pero también vemos POV’s distintos de personas que por lo visto son los familiares o conocidos de los personajes que ya mencionamos al principio. Por un lado entiendo que eso sirva para darnos cierto contexto de cada uno e intentar desarrollar bien a sus personajes principales, pero considero que abusar de tantas escenas secundarias solamente para alargar más de lo necesario esta película es lo que menos me gusta. Es verdad que hay varias lecciones valiosas entre estas distintas historias contadas, como es el caso del valor de la vida, el amor y la paternidad.

Ahora hablemos de los personajes, los cuales en este caso considero que hicieron un mejor trabajo que en su anterior entrega de desastres naturales. Lo digo sobre todo por el excelente trabajo de John Cusack quien hace del escritor Jackson Curtis. Si bien no conozco mucho sobre su carrera actoral, entre las pocas películas en las que lo he visto actuar he notado que posee un estilo y carisma que engancha al espectador y en esta obra no es la excepción. Cumple bien con ser el típico padre que desatiende a sus hijos y que vive solo luego de haberse divorciado de su ex. En vez de ser un desempleado, es un escritor poco conocido que trabaja de chofer privado para un empresario ruso en Los Ángeles. Prácticamente es el perfil perfecto para esta cinta en la que salvará a su familia del fin del mundo. Ya he dicho antes lo que opino sobre este tipo de tramas donde siempre el protagonista tiene problemas con su familia y que solo cuando ocurre una catástrofe mundial es que logra resolver dichos problemas y se unen al final. Volviendo al tema de los personajes, está otro que me llamó mucho la atención ya que le dió ese toque cómico que le funcionó muy bien al menos durante la primera hora de película -que es el tiempo en el que él aparece-. Estoy hablando del locutor Charlie Frost, el típico excéntrico loco que habla de temas conspiranoicos y que curiosamente sabe todo sobre el fin del mundo en esta cinta.

Otherwise, it can be said that the cast stands out quite well in this film, managing to play important roles with varied characters that knew how to relate and blend well with the plot. However, it is due to the script itself and the absurd amount of clichés that detracted from the importance of some of these outstanding supporting characters. One such case is the boyfriend of the protagonist's ex, who has a not very pleasant ending, as well as downplaying the impact of this after how much they make clear to us the influence he has on Jackson's children. Like him, there are also other characters who manage to stand out well, but end up in a very unpleasant way in the end. Going back to the clichés that abound in this film, I also noticed a certain use of irony in the plot to show us shocking scenarios. An example of this is a scene at the beginning where we see the writer's ex with her current boyfriend, who by the way is a plastic surgeon, talking to her and telling her the following line: "I feel that there is something that is separating us", or something like that. And just at that moment the floor of the supermarket they are in opens in two right in the middle of both of them and literally separates them. Like this there are other scenes where we see the same sequence and irony. I don't know if it's something random or an intentional way to give humor to the film. Of course, we are talking about more than two and a half hours long, so we should expect something like this to pass the time without getting bored.

There are also other points I would like to mention regarding this movie, such as the way the world in general is shown adding up to chaos with so much destruction and natural disasters. We see the different sides of each country, being these the political, social and religious side. We also see that they deal with issues related to the way of selecting the people who will survive this catastrophe, most of them being rich people who were able to pay their entrance fee valued at one billion euros. I do not know if this is a rather exaggerated way that the film has to refer to the price of life or to the absurd way that different entities have of dividing people by classes. On the other hand, we also see the typical mistakes that those who are in charge of the research and the project to save the world always make, as is the case of the geologist who, just a few days before the end, realizes that they do not have much time left. There is also the religious theme, in which we see different references to religions and beliefs of the world that allude to the end, giving reason to these predictions, especially the Mayan calendar. Now, with respect to the end of the film, let's say that more than anything its third act is what I liked the least of all this feature film. The way in which the ending is stretched out with a series of events just before the end and the sacrifices they make and everything is a rather exaggerated and unnecessary way to give "his time to shine" to the protagonist alone. There's already a certain point in the movie where you see enough coincidences and overdone moments of drama for a very unpleasant ending.

De resto, se puede decir que el elenco se destaca bastante bien en esta película, consiguiendo desempeñar papeles importantes con personajes variados que supieron relacionarse y mezclarse bien con la trama. Sin embargo, es debido al mismo guión y la cantidad absurda de clichés que le restó importancia a algunos de estos personajes secundarios destacados. Uno de estos casos es el del novio de la ex del protagonista, quien tiene un final no muy agradable, además de restarle importancia al impacto de esto después de lo mucho que nos dejan claro la influencia que tiene él en los hijos de Jackson. Como él, hay también otros personajes que consiguen destacarse bien, pero que al final terminan de una forma muy poco agradable. Volviendo a los clichés que abundan en esta película, he notado también cierto uso de la ironía en la trama para mostrarnos escenarios impactantes. Un ejemplo de esto es una escena del principio en donde vemos a la ex del escritor con su actual novio, quien por cierto es cirujano plástico, hablando con ella y diciéndole la siguiente línea: “siento que hay algo que nos está separando”, o algo así. Y justo en ese momento el suelo del supermercado en el que están se abre en dos justamente en medio de ambos y los separa literalmente. Como esta hay otras escenas donde vemos la misma secuencia e ironía. No sé si es algo al azar o una forma intencional de darle humor a la película. Claro está, hablamos de más de dos horas y media de duración, así que algo así debemos de esperar para pasar el rato sin aburrirnos.

También hay otros puntos que me gustaría mencionar con respecto a esta película, como es la forma de mostrarnos el mundo en general sumándose en un caos con tanta destrucción y desastres naturales. Vemos los diferentes lados de cada país, siendo estos el lado político, social y religioso. Vemos también que tratan temas relacionados a la forma de seleccionar a las personas que sobrevivirán a esta catástrofe, siendo la mayoría personas ricas que pudieron pagar su entrada valorada en mil millones de euros. No sé si esta es una forma bastante exagerada que tiene la película para hacer referencia al precio de la vida o a la forma tan absurda que tienen diferentes entidades de dividir a la gente por clases. Por otro lado, vemos también los típicos errores que siempre cometen los que están a cargo de la investigación y el proyecto de salvar al mundo, como es el caso del geólogo que ya a pocos días del fin es que se da cuenta de que no les queda mucho tiempo. También está el tema religioso, la cual vemos diferentes referencias a religiones y creencias del mundo que aluden al fin, dándole la razón a estas predicciones, sobre todo a la del calendario maya. Ahora, con respecto al final de la película, digamos que más que nada su tercer acto es lo que menos me gustó de todo este largometraje. La forma en la que alargan el final con una serie de eventos justo antes del fin y los sacrificios que hacen y todo es una forma bastante exagerada e innecesaria de darle “su tiempo de brillar” al protagonista nomás. Ya hay cierto punto de la película en el que ves suficientes casualidades y momentos pasados de drama para un final muy poco agradable.

The style, visual effects, landscapes, practical effects and computer effects are the highlights of this section. Especially in the moments of catastrophes we can notice all this with impressive sequences of cities shaking, buildings collapsing and sectors sinking into the ocean. The theme of explosions also, as is the case of the scene of the mountain exploding or the city of Hawaii completely in flames. Like these, there are many other scenes of catastrophes and floods that look impressively good for the era in which this film was released. The level of detail and realism that everything has is what makes it the best disaster movie ever. As for the sound effects we can notice that it has a very high level of quality, with scenarios in which only the voices and background sounds are heard, filling the atmosphere with impact and tension. On the other hand, the soundtrack of this movie is one of the best I've heard, with background music that manages to raise the tension and excitement of each scenario to a new level. In short, this disaster movie is perfect for anyone who is looking for something quirky and eye-catching on an audiovisual level, nomás.

Personally, I give it an 8.5/10 rating as far as the sci-fi/catastrophe genre is concerned.

Sobre todo en los momentos de catástrofes podemos notar todo esto con secuencias impresionantes de ciudades temblando, edificios derrumbándose y sectores hundiéndose en el océano. El tema de las explosiones también, como es el caso de la escena de la montaña explotando o la ciudad de Hawaii completamente en llamas. Como estas, hay muchas otras escenas de catástrofes e inundaciones que se ven impresionantemente bien para la época en la que fue estrenada esta película. El nivel de detalles y realismo que tiene todo es lo que lo hace la mejor película de catástrofes que ha existido hasta ahora. En cuanto a los efectos de sonido podemos notar que posee un nivel de calidad muy alto, con escenarios en los que solo se escuchan las voces y los sonidos de fondo llenando el ambiente de impacto y tensión. Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 8.5/10 en lo que respecta al género de ciencia ficción y catástrofes.
