Hello, cinema fans. Today we’re kicking off a new series dedicated to one of the greatest directors of this century. This director has given us several cinematic gems that have become part of massive science fiction franchises. One of those films is the one we’re featuring today, an unforgettable sequel that has gone down in history. Aliens was written and directed by the great James Cameron and stars Sigourney Weaver, Michael Biehn, Paul Reiser, Lance Henriksen, and others. Plot

The film opens with a view of the vastness of space and a completely abandoned spaceship; we then see that ship being intercepted by another reconnaissance vessel. Upon opening it and entering, the crew realizes that the abandoned ship contains a single living person inside, in hypersleep. The crew member’s name is Ellen Ripley, and she is the sole survivor of the destruction of the Nostromo. Back on Earth, Ellen suddenly awakens from her long slumber while being visited by a man in a suit named Carter Burke, who claims to be a representative of the Weyland-Yutani Corporation and tells her that she spent 57 years in hypersleep while drifting through space.

I don’t think there’s a better way to kick off this new “Cult Directors” special dedicated to the great James Cameron than with one of the best sequels ever made in the history of cinema. At a time when our director was just beginning to gain popularity thanks to his work on The Terminator (1984), Cameron was hired to direct the second installment of another future sci-fi film saga that would revolutionize the genre forever: Aliens. While he didn’t have much experience directing sequels, it must be admitted that on this occasion, Cameron achieved something incredible.

Now, while we wouldn’t see a flawless audiovisual masterpiece like the one Ridley Scott delivered in the first installment, what James Cameron did achieve this time was to transform the already well-known space horror story of the moment into a non-stop drama and action-packed tale. So much so that, honestly, I have to admit that I grew up watching and remembering this second film more than the first, classic installment. But that’s not to say it’s better than the previous one—far from it—but rather because it features incredible action scenes that have aged quite well.

Creo que no hay mejor manera de empezar este nuevo especial de “Directores de Culto” dedicado al gran James Cameron que con una de sus mejores secuelas jamás antes creadas en la historia del cine. En una época en la que nuestro director apenas se estaba haciendo popular gracias al trabajo que realizó con The Terminator (1984), Cameron fue contratado para dirigir la segunda entrega de otra futura saga de películas de ciencia ficción que logró revolucionar el género para siempre: Aliens. Si bien no tenía mucha experiencia dirigiendo secuelas, hay que admitir que en esta ocasión Cameron ha conseguido algo increíble.

Ahora, si bien no veríamos un trabajo audiovisual super impecable como el que realizó Ridley Scott en la primera entrega; lo que sí logró James Cameron en esta ocasión es convertir la ya conocida historia de terror espacial del momento en una historia de drama y acción sin parar. Tanto es así que, honestamente, les debo admitir que crecí viendo y recordando más esta segunda película que su primera y clásica entrega. Pero no es por decir que sea mejor que la anterior, ni muchísimo menos, sino porque posee escenas de acción increíbles que han conseguido envejecer bastante bien.

I don't mean to disparage James Cameron's work, but it's hard to imagine this sequel surpassing its predecessor, especially given everything Ridley Scott achieved back then with its production and direction. However, what we can applaud Cameron for here is his ingenuity in transforming a space horror story into the familiar action-science fiction tale he previously demonstrated with The Terminator. I don’t think I need to repeat that he co-wrote the screenplay, as his influence is clearly evident throughout the film.

We just need to recap a bit how it begins, with the rescue of Ellen Ripley and the shocking news that she has been lost in space for 57 years. Her only relative is no longer alive, and the only thing keeping her sane is her traumatic experience on the Nostromo with “The Alien” that wiped out the entire crew. However, in an interview she has with some important representatives of this futuristic world, no one believes the fantastic story she tells them, and they treat her like a madwoman who has caused millions in losses to the company with the destruction of her ship.

No es por desprestigiar el trabajo de James Cameron, pero es difícil que esta segunda entrega supere a su antecesora y más con todo lo que ha conseguido Ridley Scott en su momento con la producción y dirección de la misma. Sin embargo, lo qué si se le puede aplaudir a Cameron aquí es su ingenio al momento de convertir una historia de terror espacial en la ya conocida historia de acción y ciencia ficción que nos ha demostrado anteriormente con The Terminator. Creo que no hace falta repetir que participó en la escritura de dicha historia ya que se puede apreciar muy bien a lo largo de esta película.

Solo hay que recapitular un poco cómo inicia, con el rescate de Ellen Ripley y la noticia impactante de que ha estado perdida durante 57 años en el espacio. Su única familiar ya no se encuentra con vida y lo único que la mantiene cuerda es su traumática experiencia en la Nostromo con “El Pasajero Desconocido” que aniquiló a toda su tripulación. Sin embargo, en una entrevista que tiene con algunos representantes importantes de este mundo futurista, nadie le cree la fantástica historia que les cuenta y la tratan como una loca que ha causado pérdidas millonarias a la compañía con la destrucción de su nave.

I would let all this slide if it weren't for the shocking news that the planet Ripley and her crew visited back then is now home to a colony of more than 150 inhabitants. Then, the company receives a distress signal from that colony, with which they subsequently lose contact, and Ripley—who had already foreseen this—is visited again by the Weyland-Yutani representative, who asks her to go with a group of colonizing marines who promise to protect her along the way. However, I can guarantee you right now that this team of so-called experts is not prepared for what’s coming.

The plot of this film starts off very well, seamlessly connecting with the ending of the previous film, while also hooking the viewer with a somewhat predictable plot twist involving the characters. As the sole survivor of what she admits was an intergalactic massacre, Ellen Ripley becomes the sole person held responsible for the disasters caused by the loss of the Nostromo in the first installment. The company, completely skeptical—just like the rest of the world’s major organizations—dismisses her story as fabrications meant to cover up her actions.

Todo esto lo dejaría pasar si no fuera por la impactante noticia de que el planeta que llegaron a visitar esa vez Ripley con su tripulación está ahora habitada por una colonia de más de 150 habitantes. But the next thing really bothered me a bit, and that is the fact that, without any prior investigation or reconnaissance of the location, they send an entire colony of over a hundred people to the very same planet where the creature that wiped out Ripley’s crew originated. Now, Carter Burke asks Ellen to accompany him to that planet as an “advisor,” which she initially refuses, but her financial situation and mental state force her to agree as a sort of redemption or whatever. Honestly, I don’t know why she would agree, knowing that the place is swarming with those monsters.

But anyway, another thing that catches my attention in this movie is the way they introduce us to the entire squad of marines who will accompany Ripley and Burke to the colonized planet with which they lost contact. Let’s just say that each character manages to stand out in one way or another, but in the end, they end up being nothing more than the typical supporting characters in any action-thriller movie who always meet a grim end. Without giving too many spoilers to the uninformed folks who haven’t seen this movie yet, I’ll just say that what follows after they arrive on the planet is a nonstop barrage of action, deaths, and other shocking scenes.

Pero lo siguiente ya es algo que me molestó un poco y es el hecho de que, sin ninguna investigación ni reconocimiento previo del lugar, envían a toda una colonia de más de cien personas al mismo planeta de donde se originó la criatura que exterminó a la tripulación de Ripley. Ahora, Carter Burke le pide a Ellen que la acompañe a dicho planeta como “consejera”, cosa que ella niega al principio, pero su situación económica y estado mental la obligan a acceder como una especie de redención o qué sé yo. Sinceramente no sé por qué accedería al saber que dicho lugar está plagado de esos monstruos.

Pero bueno, otra cosa que me llama la atención de esta película es la manera en la que nos prestan a toda la tropa de marines que acompañarán a Ripley y Burke al planeta colonizado con el cual perdieron contacto. Digamos que cada personaje logra destacarse de alguna forma u otra, pero al final no terminan siendo más que los típicos personajes secundarios de toda película de acción y suspenso que siempre terminan mal. Sin darles tantos spoilers a la gente sin cultura que no ha visto aún esta película, solo les diré que lo que sigue después de llegar al planeta es un sinfín de acción, muertes y demás escenas impactantes.

One thing that became clear to us after watching The Terminator is that James Cameron has an innate talent for blending science fiction with action in a truly creative and impressive way. This time around, he really outdoes himself by showing us a group of space marines fighting and struggling to survive on a colonized planet, with hundreds of Xenomorphs constantly hunting them down. The way the entire plot shifts from what was supposed to be a rescue mission to a mission of survival in space. Obviously, the entire movie isn’t filled with action scenes, gunfire, explosions, and chases.

It has many moments of apparent calm, suspense, drama, and some humor that really set the tone for the plot. Another thing worth noting is that most of the film takes place on the planet where the Xenomorphs we see originated, rather than in space as in the previous film. This shifts the bleak atmosphere of that film somewhat; instead, here we’re shown a much larger space where everything unfolds, as if across different levels of an action, exploration, and survival video game. This is how Cameron shed the space-based horror that defined the original story.

Algo que sí nos dejó claro al ver The Terminator es que James Cameron tiene un talento innato de mezclar la ciencia ficción con la acción de una manera bastante creativa e impresionante. En esta ocasión se quita el sombrero al mostrarnos a un grupo de militares espaciales luchando y sobreviviendo en un planeta colonizado con centenares de Xenomorfos cazandolos constantemente. La manera en la que toda la trama pasa de ser una supuesta misión de rescate a una misión de supervivencia espacial. Obviamente, no toda la película está repleta de escenas de acción, disparos, explosiones y persecuciones.

Tiene muchos momentos de aparente calma, suspenso, drama y algo de humor que consigue ambientar muy bien la trama. Otra cosa a destacar es que la mayor parte de la película ocurre en el planeta donde se originaron los Xenomorfos que vemos y no en el espacio como ocurrió en la película anterior. Esto cambia un poco el ambiente desolador que transmitía dicha cinta; en cambio, aquí nos muestra un espacio no tan reducido donde ocurre todo como si fueran distintos niveles de un videojuego de acción, exploración y supervivencia. Así es como Cameron se deshizo del terror espacial que tenía la historia principal.

Another thing I’d like to highlight about this sequel—which manages to set itself apart quite a bit from its predecessor—is the sheer number of Xenomorphs we see from start (after the first half-hour of the film) to finish. You could even say there’s a specific type of Xenomorph that appears at the end and effectively serves as the classic “final boss.” But I won’t say any more about that so as not to give away too many spoilers; I’ll just mention that the number of Xenomorphs you’ll see will be quite substantial. And well, since this is now an action and science fiction film, this is to be expected.

While the shift from horror to action can feel a bit abrupt, I admit that the film manages to be just as entertaining and fascinating. Plus, James Cameron manages to maintain the essence and intensity of the Xenomorphs in each of their appearances. At least in the audiovisual aspect, it stands out quite well, turning the Xenomorph into a dangerous creature that’s hard to detect and defeat. Unlike the previous film, where it was barely seen on the occasional occasion, in this second installment, the creature does have a much stronger presence in many more scenes.

Otra cosa que me gustaría destacar de esta secuela que consigue diferenciarse bastante de su antecesora es la cantidad enorme de Xenomorfos que vemos de principio (después de la media hora de película) a fin. Incluso se puede decir que hay hasta una variedad de Xenomorfo que aparece al final y que logra cumplir como el típico papel de “last boss”. Pero de eso no les diré más para no darles tantos spoilers, solo les menciono la cantidad de Xenomorfos que verán será bastante. Y bueno, al tratarse ahora de una cinta de acción y ciencia ficción es de esperarse esto.

Si bien el cambio puede llegar a ser un poco abrupto, pasando del terror a la acción, admito que la película logra ser igual de entretenida y fascinante. Además de que James Cameron consigue mantener la esencia e intensidad de los Xenomorfos en cada una de sus apariciones. Al menos en el aspecto audiovisual logra destacarse bastante bien convirtiendo al Xenomorfo en una criatura peligrosa, difícil de detectar y vencer. A diferencia de la película anterior donde casi se ve en una que otra ocasión, en esta segunda entrega sí se tiene más presencia esta criatura en muchas más escenas.

That’s why I’d like to talk about the film’s audiovisual aspects, where I think James Cameron really shines. This is especially true when it comes to his use of practical visual effects—particularly given the era in which it was made and the fact that they’ve aged quite well. I’m referring specifically to the visual design of the Xenomorph, which remains the same as in the previous film but is more noticeable due to its increased screen time throughout the film’s more than two-hour runtime. Otherwise, both the cinematography and the palette of cool, dark colors are excellent.

Details like the view of space or the planet where the action takes place look a bit superficial—almost as if they were made with models or superimposed—but they’ve aged very well nonetheless. The same goes for the lighting and shadows, though the film manages to maintain a solid balance throughout most of its runtime. This is especially true in the action scenes, where explosions and other events illuminate each setting effectively. The gritty, somewhat graphic tone and the film’s makeup also work very well. The sound effects stand out, as does the soundtrack. In short, here’s one of the best sequels out there.

Personally, I give it a 9/10 rating in terms of the science fiction, action, and suspense genres.

Para esto les hablo de una vez sobre el apartado audiovisual de esta película, donde considero que James Cameron consigue destacarse muy bien. Sobre todo al momento de usar efectos visuales prácticos, sobre todo por la época en la que se produjo y que logró envejecer bastante bien. Especialmente lo digo por el diseño visual del Xenomorfo, el cual se mantiene igual a la cinta anterior, pero se puede apreciar más debido a su mayor aparición y todo en las más de dos horas de duración que tiene esta película. De resto, tanto la fotografía como la paleta de colores fríos y oscuros están muy bien.

Detalles como la visión del espacio o el planeta donde ocurren las cosas se ve un tanto superficial, algo como hecho con maquetas o superpuesto, igualmente logra envejecer muy bien. El tema de las luces y las sombras ocurre igual mayormente, pero consigue mantener bien estable el equilibrio en la mayor parte de toda la película. Sobre todo en las escenas de acción donde las explosiones y demás cosas que ocurren alrededor iluminan muy bien cada escenario. El tema crudo, un tanto gráfico, y el maquillaje que tiene la película también quedan muy bien. Los efectos de sonido también se destacan, al igual que la banda sonora. En fin, les dejo una de las mejores secuelas que existen.

Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 9/10 en lo que respecta al género de la ciencia ficción, acción y suspenso.

Despite its many ups and downs, Alien remains as one of the best science fiction movie franchises ever made. The first one is a pure masterpiece!

Muy buena reseña. No he visto la película porque el terror me produce pesadillas cuando estoy dormida y recuerdo las peores escenas cuando estoy sola y si se va la luz la cosa se me pone peor. Sin duda un clásico maravilloso, súper inesperado las cosas que suceden, cuando crees que es un monstruo es una niña que ha logrado sobrevivir, yo siempre la disfruto cuando la repiten, como indicas es un clásico maravilloso, grandes directores y lo han demostrado con el tiempo. Un abrazo.
