Before I give you my opinion, I would like to mention that I am one of those who completely disagree with Live-Action and less so with Japanese works. After the horrifying, pathetic, traumatic and despicable case that was Dragon Ball Evolution (considered the worst movie in history, until recently), I decided not to see more film footage adapted to real image or whatever it is called of works of Japanese origin such as anime or manga. However, from my complete ignorance and shortly before fully entering the world of western animation, I remember seeing this film on television on more than one occasion. As a fan of the sci-fi and action genre I admit that I was fascinated and thoroughly entertained. Without knowing that it was based on a well-known manga of the genre made in the 90s, I enjoyed this adaptation made for the big screen as if it were a masterpiece. Now, after several years and knowing where it was based on, I watch it again and recognize again how well done it is overall. You don't even need to read the original manga to realize how well adapted it is, not to mention its production and direction level, which is one of the best the movie world has to offer so far.

Antes de darles mi opinión, quisiera mencionar que soy de los que está en completo desacuerdo con los Live-Action y menos de obras japonesas. Luego del horroroso, patético, traumático y despreciable caso que fue Dragon Ball Evolution (considerada como la peor película de la historia, hasta hace poco), decidí no ver más metrajes cinematográficos adaptados a imagen real o como se llame de obras de origen japonés como lo pueden ser animes o mangas. Sin embargo, desde mi completa ignorancia y poco antes de entrar de lleno al mundo de la animación occidental, recuerdo haber visto esta película en la televisión en más de una ocasión. Como fan del género de la ciencia ficción y la acción admito que me fascinó y me entretuvo muchísimo. Sin saber que estaba basado en un manga conocido del género hecho en los años 90s, disfruté de esta adaptación hecha para la pantalla grande como si de una obra maestra cualquiera se tratase. Ahora, luego de varios años y sabiendo de dónde se basó, vuelvo a verla y vuelvo a reconocer lo bien hecha que está de forma general. Y es que no hace falta siquiera leer el manga original para darse cuenta de lo bien adaptado que está, sin mencionar su nivel de producción y dirección que es de lo mejor que el mundo del cine tiene para ofrecer hasta ahora.

Starting with its story, what we get to see from the beginning is a post-apocalyptic world with a cyberpunk style that reminds me a lot of classic works of the genre of the 70s and 80s (of course with its obvious difference in terms of visuals and modern quality). Alita discovers that her savior and doctor is actually a bounty hunter who hunts for criminals and people with dangerous mechanical prosthetics in order to survive. But as much as she wants to be a bounty hunter too, her life is not without danger when a dangerous criminal named Grewishka is sent to kill her.

This film has several elements that really stand out to me, personally. Leaving the visual aspect aside for last, as always, I want to focus mainly on how the story is composed. A human-brained cyborg with amnesia is found among the trash in a world where technology itself caused the total collapse of human civilization. What can practically be considered as a robot and at the same time is not what we see on the front page as the protagonist in this work. We also get to know her tastes and apparent curiosity for things that put her life at risk, such as Motorball, which is a game where you mix machine fights with a race and a ball. We also see that she is passionate, compassionate, loving and very competitive. But what strikes me most is her origin, rather, since in the film we are told little by little throughout its two-hour duration who she is or who she was in the past. This calls into question whether she is really human or just a weapon discarded by the floating city of Zalem.

Empezando por su historia, lo que llegamos a ver desde el principio es un mundo post-apocalíptico con un estilo cyberpunk que me hace recordar mucho a clásicas obras del género de los 70s y 80s (claro que con su evidente diferencia en cuanto a visuales y calidad moderna). Retomando lo que ya les conté arriba, vemos que esta historia gira en torno a la búsqueda de quién es en realidad Alita, una cyborg que al parecer le gustan mucho las peleas y el conflicto, además de ser un poco temperamental y apasionada a la vez. Vemos que sufre del típico caso de amnesia que todo protagonista posee al principio de cada obra. La relación que ella empieza a tener con Hugo y otras personas en este bajo y peligroso mundo donde predomina el más fuerte la hará recordar poco a poco su pasado y su origen mientras los secretos que la rodean a ella, al Dr. Dyson y su querido amigo amante de los juegos sucios están ocultando. Alita descubre que su salvador y doctor es en realidad un cazarrecompensas que se dedica a buscar criminales y personas con prótesis mecánicas peligrosas para sobrevivir. Esta película posee varios elementos que me llaman mucho la atención, en lo personal. Dejando de lado el aspecto visual para el final, como siempre, quiero centrarme principalmente en cómo está compuesta la historia. Un cyborg con cerebro de humano con amnesia es encontrado entre la basura en un mundo donde la tecnología misma causó el colapso total de la civilización humana. Lo que prácticamente se puede considerar como un robot y a la vez no es lo que vemos a primera plana como protagonista en esta obra. Vamos conociendo también sus gustos y curiosidad aparente por cosas que ponen en riesgo su vida, como es el Motorball que es un juego donde mezclas peleas de máquinas con una carrera y un balón. También vemos que es alguien apasionada, compasiva, amorosa y muy competitiva. Pero lo que más me llama la atención es su origen, más bien, ya que en la película nos van contando poco a poco a lo largo de sus dos horas de duración quién es o quién fue en el pasado. Esto pone en duda si realmente es humana o solo es un arma desechada por la ciudad flotante de Zalem.

As you have already noticed, the film seeks to develop the characters as much as possible. Clearly much of it revolves around the self-discovery that the main character, Alita, has with her past and who she was. That there are secrets or mysteries intertwined with each other around the people Alita hangs out with every day is something that adds a bit of spice to the story. You also get to see how dark and dangerous this underworld can get with innocent people. The bounty hunter theme and the Motorball game give it a touch of competitiveness and danger that appeals to people quite a bit. The fact that the ones on top of everything are the very antagonists or villains behind all the bad that is happening in this city is a clear example of what a corrupt government can come to influence or do to society in real life. I really like how the Japanese manage to develop the characters in their works so well, giving realism and feeling to each one, especially to those who are not supposed to have it because they are pure machines.

Another thing I really like about this movie is the amount of action it has, which is no small thing considering its plot and story itself. I really like the action sequences there are, the different fights, the choreographies and the level of rawness that can be witnessed throughout. It is obviously not a movie for the whole family. And I say this not only because of this, but also because of the way it deals with deep themes such as compassion, redemption, the search for identity and the fight against injustice. Being a war and action-packed work, it is obvious that it does not serve as an example of no to violence, but the lessons are clear for those who have seen it or still remember it. As for the characters, I don't have any favorites, to tell you the truth, I'm just still in doubt about Alita's origin. While her personality and the development given to her throughout the story until the sad ending makes her a very good example of a protagonist fighter and defender of justice; the case that she was a RUM still makes me curious (although I know it is something that is told later in the same manga on which it is based).

Claramente gran parte de la misma gira en torno al auto-descubrimiento que tiene la protagonista, Alita, con su pasado y lo que fue. Es obvio que no es una película para toda la familia. Y no solo lo digo por esto, sino también por la forma en la que trata temas profundos como lo es la compasión, la redención, la búsqueda de la identidad y la lucha contra la injusticia. Al ser una obra bélica y repleta de acción es evidente que no sirve para dar el ejemplo de no a la violencia, pero las lecciones son claras para los que la hayan visto o la recuerden todavía. En cuanto a los personajes, no tengo ningún favorito, la verdad, solo sigo con la duda del origen de Alita. Si bien su personalidad y el desarrollo que le dan a lo largo de la historia hasta el triste final la hace un muy buen ejemplo de un protagonista luchador y defensor de la justicia; el caso de que fue una RUM me sigue generando curiosidad (aunque sé que es algo que se cuenta luego en el mismo manga en el que se basa).

Last but not least, let's talk about the technical and visual aspect of this film. With James Cameron as producer and a budget of almost 200 million dollars, it is normal to be impressed from the beginning with such a level of quality and visual details that this film has. Starting with the views of Iron City with Zalem on top, the mix of machines and people with mechanical prosthetics is what one notices the most. I also really like the design of the characters, talking about the case of the cyborgs that, for the most part, seem to have somewhat monstrous aspects. But what impresses me the most is the work behind Alita's design and appearance, especially with the details of the robotic body she has. Or well, I'd like to say that until I notice her huge eyes, which is obviously a nod to the original design of the character in the manga with her animated look (big eyes, oval head with outlined finish and extravagantly styled hair). But well, otherwise everything looks excellent, especially the visual effects, the fascinating transitions and the excellent use of CGI. I also really like the film's soundtrack, especially with the musicalization of the battle and racing scenarios which is pretty much the most striking thing about it all. All in all, this movie is perfect for any lover of the sci-fi genre.

Personally, I give it a 9/10 rating as far as the sci-fi/action genre is concerned.

Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos del apartado técnico y visual que tiene esta película. Contando con James Cameron como productor y con casi 200 millones de dólares de presupuesto, es normal quedarse impresionado desde el principio con tal nivel de calidad y detalles visuales que tiene esta película. Empezando por las vistas de la Ciudad Hierro con Zalem encima, la mezcla de máquinas y personas con prótesis mecánicas es lo que más uno nota. También me gusta mucho el diseño de los personajes, hablando del caso de los cyborgs que, en su mayoría, parecen tener aspectos un tanto monstruosos. Pero lo que más me impresiona es el trabajo que hay detrás del diseño y aspecto de Alita, sobre todo con los detalles del cuerpo robótico que tiene. O bueno, eso quisiera decir hasta notar sus enormes ojos, lo cual evidentemente es un guiño al diseño original del personaje en el manga con su aspecto animado (ojos grandes, cabeza ovalada con acabado perfilado y cabello con estilos extravagantes). Pero bueno, de resto todo se ve excelente, sobre todo por los efectos visuales, las fascinantes transiciones y el excelente uso del CGI. También me gusta mucho la banda sonora de la película, sobre todo con la musicalización de los escenarios de batallas y carreras que es prácticamente lo más llamativo de todo. En resumen, esta película es perfecta para todo amante del género de la ciencia ficción.

Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 9/10 en lo que respecta al género de la ciencia ficción y la acción.
