Personally, I have several things to say about this movie and none of them are good, really. I was hoping that what I remembered at the time as a good movie that I saw as a kid a couple of times until I completely forgot about its existence would be something a little better than what it ended up being when I gave it this last chance recently. While I know that Michael Bay has a certain reputation as a director for making movies that lack good stories and characters, I figured that being a worldwide natural disaster piece I thought it would be appealing, at least in the audiovisual section which is the only thing it does manage to stand out in. When it comes to science fiction movies related to disasters, such as meteorite movies, what is expected is to see stories that have a certain sense and impact not only at a general level. While this one is no exception, it has many details that make it heavy, absurd and difficult to watch, personally. And it even has a very good cast with talented actors like Bruce Willis, Owen Wilson and Ben Afleck. But not even its cast, nor its production level were enough to make a half-decent film that could compete with Deep Impact, Disney's version of this movie (although in the end I don't think either of them stood out as much as expected, to be honest).

Personalmente, tengo varias cosas que decir de esta película y ninguna es buena, la verdad. Esperaba que lo que en su momento recordaba como una buena película que ví cuando niño un par de veces hasta que me olvidé por completo de su existencia fuera algo un poco mejor de lo que terminó siendo cuando le dí esta última oportunidad recientemente. Si bien sé que Michael Bay tiene cierta reputación como director por hacer películas que carecen de buenas historias y personajes, supuse que al ser una obra de desastres naturales a nivel mundial creí que sería atractiva, al menos en el apartado audiovisual que es lo único en lo que sí logra destacarse. Y es que en cuanto a películas de ciencia ficción relacionadas a desastres, como lo son las de meteoritos, lo que se espera es ver historias que tengan cierto sentido e impacto no solo a nivel general. Si bien esta no es la excepción, tiene muchos detalles que la hacen pesada, absurda y difícil de ver, en lo personal. Y eso que hasta tiene un elenco muy bueno con actores talentosos como Bruce Willis, Owen Wilson y Ben Afleck. Pero ni siquiera su elenco, ni su nivel de producción fueron suficientes para hacer una cinta medio decente que pudiera competir con Impacto Profundo, la versión de Disney de esta película (aunque al final creo que ninguna de las dos llegaron a destacarse tanto como se esperaba, la verdad).

Let's start with the story, which in a nutshell is about a small group of oil drillers from the United States who were chosen by NASA itself to participate in an important mission in which they will go to the meteorite that is the "size of Texas" to drill a few hundred meters deep and put a nuclear bomb inside to explode it before it is impacted on Earth. An idea so crazy that even Harry Stamper (Bruce Willis) - one of the chosen drillers and the best of his generation - tells Dan Truman, who seems to be in charge of the whole thing, how absurd it is. However, he agrees in the end, but on the condition that he goes with his own drilling equipment into space. It is here that he calls in the other members chosen for the job, including A.J. Frost, a former employee of his who recently fired him for dating his daughter. These are trained for the next few days with some experienced astronauts who will go with them on two teams, two different ships called Liberty and Independence (very American these names, aren't they?). While this is not the best team to be able to travel into space, something they make clear from the very beginning in the movie itself, they are the ones that the world and the great people of the United States have tasked with the important job of saving them all.

I guess you already have some idea of what I am going to say about this movie after what you have just read, don't you? An American film in which NASA, one of the largest and most important organizations in the country and the world for its enormous influence in the world of science and technology, takes a very untrustworthy and troubled group of oil drillers on a mission to blow up a nuclear-armed meteorite and save the world. The whole thing reads, smells and feels like pure and mere very high-budget American propaganda. An irrational mix of fiction rather than science with adult American comedy and a lot of unnecessary drama. That's not to mention the sheer amount of clichés that can be found throughout the two and a half plus hours of film that is how long this is. The truth is that I was expecting something less flashy in terms of irreverence and more interesting in terms of a good story with decent characters, to be honest. But not even that, since from the basis of the story as it is the mission has many holes and logical flaws and nonsense that even the scientists themselves have denied some time later (as is the case of the power of the bomb required to explode a meteorite of such enormous magnitude). Also the very idea of sending drillers into space instead of training astronauts to drill less than 300 meters of space rock is completely illogical in every sense of the word.

Empecemos con la historia, la cual en resumidas cuentas trata de un pequeño grupo de perforadores petroleros de Estados Unidos que fueron elegidos por la misma NASA para participar en una misión importante en la que se dirigirán al meteorito que es del “tamaño de Texas” para perfora unos cientos de metros de profundidad y poner una bomba nuclear dentro para así hacerlo explotar antes de que sea impactado sobre la Tierra. Una idea tan loca que hasta el mismo Harry Stamper (Bruce Willis) -uno de los perforadores elegidos y el mejor de su generación- le dice a Dan Truman quien parece ser el encargado de todo esto lo absurdo que es. Sin embargo, este accede al final, pero con la condición de ir con su propio equipo de perforación al espacio. Es aquí donde llama a los otros miembros elegidos para este trabajo, entre los que se encuentra A.J. Frost, un ex-trabajador suyo que lo despidió recientemente por salir con su hija. Una cinta estadounidense en la que la NASA, una de las organizaciones más grandes e importantes del país y el mundo por su enorme influencia en el mundo de la ciencia y la tecnología, llevan a un grupo muy desconfiable y problemático de perforadores petroleros para una misión en la que harán explotar un meteorito con armamento nuclear y así salvar al mundo. Todo esto se lee, huele y se siente como pura y mera propaganda estadounidense de muy alto presupuesto. Una mezcla irracional de ficción más que ciencia con comedia americana para adultos y mucho drama innecesario. Eso sin mencionar la enorme cantidad de clichés que se puede encontrar a lo largo de las más de dos horas y media de película que es lo que dura esto. La verdad es que esperaba algo menos llamativo en cuanto a irreverencia se refiere y más interesante en cuanto a una buena historia con personajes decentes, la verdad. Pero ni eso, ya que desde las bases de la historia como lo es la misión tiene muchos huecos y fallos lógicos y sin sentido que hasta los mismos científicos han desmentido cierto tiempo después (como es el caso de la potencia de la bomba requerida para explotar un meteorito de tan enorme magnitud). También la mera idea de mandar perforadores al espacio en vez de entrenar a astronautas para perforar menos de 300 metros de roca espacial es completamente ilógica en todo el sentido de la palabra.

And that's not all, because now we will go with the characters, being Harry Stamper the main character of this movie, a very Bruce Willis Bruce Willis, but without guns, chases and exploding cars as you are used to see him in the typical action movies in which he became famous. His wry humor, rebellious demeanor and way of being is the little good that can be extracted from this movie, that is if you are a fan of his acting work, of course. Otherwise we have a young Ben Afleck playing one of his least remembered roles of his career in which we realize that playing a Marvel or DC superhero works better for him than being the typical rebellious boy genius who dates his strict boss's daughter (just kidding). We also have an Owen Wilson taking on the typical role he plays in almost every movie of the charismatic blond, attractive, womanizing character. On the other hand, we have super obnoxious roles such as that of Steve Buscemi, one of Adam Sandler's friends who, while I think he did a very good job from the beginning of the movie, it wasn't until the third act that you just wish he had stayed in the meteorite before it exploded. But hey, like this one, there are several supporting characters who seem to just be attention-seeking with monologues that just make for laughs instead of making any sense or seriousness whatsoever. Although this is something that abounds in this film in general, as the lack of sense or logic is absolutely worthless here.

Neither its story, nor its characters, nor its overexploited humor of ironies, bad jokes or moments in which they seek to be funny but in the end end up taking away the little seriousness that the film has. There are also the typical clichés that I mentioned above, such as the abuse of dramatic moments with scenes in which they lengthen every second as if they were in slow motion. One such case is that of the nuclear bomb when it is activated prematurely and the ship's crew tries to disconnect the detonator when they delay until the last blessed second when they manage to disconnect it. While this is common in movies like this, let's just say that the abuse of the changes of scenery, cameras and the extra seconds they add at each interval makes it too stressful for my taste. The worst part is that there are one or two more scenarios like this at the end. There are also the other clichés of the typical American heroes, the typical protagonist who ends up giving his life (I don't care to give Spoilers, I don't recommend watching this movie, honestly) or even the typical joke about the Russians and their junk space shuttles. Regarding the latter I noticed many details in the movie that, for Russia is like giving them a hint/direct that they are no good as astronauts (not me saying it, Michael Bay says it, apparently). In itself, they seem to criticize even NASA itself with such absurd ideas and moments where their reputation is reduced to less than that of a bad divorced family man with a daughter who hates him. And let's not even talk about the ending, I don't want to hate Bruce Willis unnecessarily.

Y eso no es todo, ya que ahora iremos con los personajes, siendo Harry Stamper el protagonista de esta película, un Bruce Willis muy Bruce Willis, pero sin armas, persecuciones y coches explotando como se acostumbra uno a verlo en las típicas películas de acción en las que se hizo famoso. Su humor irónico, su conducta rebelde y forma de ser es lo poco bueno que se puede extraer de esta película, eso si eres fan de su trabajo actoral, claro. De resto tenemos a un joven Ben Afleck interpretando uno de sus papeles menos recordados de su carrera en los que nos damos cuenta de que el interpretar a un superhéroe de Marvel o de DC le sale mejor que ser el típico chico genio rebelde que sale con la hija de su estricto jefe (es broma). También tenemos a un Owen Wilson asumiendo el típico papel que hace en casi todas las películas del carismático personaje rubio, atractivo y mujeriego. Por otro lado, tenemos papeles súper detestables como lo es el de Steve Buscemi, uno de los amigos de Adam Sandler que, si bien considero que hizo un muy buen trabajo desde el principio de la película, no fue sino hasta el tercer acto en el que simplemente desearías mejor que se hubiera quedado en el meteorito antes de que explotara. Pero bueno, como este, hay varios personajes secundarios que parecen que solo buscan llamar la atención con monólogos que solo dan risa en vez de tener sentido o seriedad alguna. Aunque esto es algo que abunda mucho en esta película en general, ya que la falta de sentido o lógica carece de valor en lo absoluto aquí.

Ni su historia, ni sus personajes, ni su humor sobreexplotado de ironías, chistes malos o momentos en los que buscan ser graciosos pero que al final terminan quitándole la poca seriedad que tiene la película. También están los típicos clichés que les mencioné arriba, como el abuso de los momentos dramáticos con escenas en las que alargan cada segundo como si estuvieran en cámara lenta. Un caso así es el de la bomba nuclear cuando es activada antes de tiempo y los de la nave intentan desconectar el detonador cuando se demoran hasta el último bendito segundo que es cuando logran desconectarlo. Si bien es algo común en películas como esta, digamos que el abuso de los cambios de escenarios, cámaras y los segundos extra que le agregan en cada intervalo lo hace demasiado estresante para mí gusto. Lo peor es que hay uno o dos escenarios más como este al final. También están los otros clichés de los típicos héroes americanos, el típico protagonista que termina dando la vida (me da igual dar Spoilers, no recomiendo ver esta película, sinceramente) o incluso el típico chiste de los rusos y sus transbordadores espaciales de chatarra. Con respecto a esto último he notado muchos detalles en la película que, para Rusia es como darles una indirecta/directa de que no sirven como astronautas (no lo digo yo, lo dice Michael Bay, por lo visto). En sí, parece que critican hasta la misma NASA con ideas tan absurdas y momentos en los que su reputación es reducida a menos que la de un mal padre de familia divorciado y con una hija que lo odia. Y mejor ni hablemos del final, no quiero odiar a Bruce Willis innecesariamente.

Last but not least, let's talk about the technical and visual aspect of this movie. Those of us who have been watching Michael Bay's work in the world of cinema for a long time know that the only thing in which he manages to stand out in a good way is the visual effects and the good use of CGI in his mega-productions. And this movie is no exception, since from the beginning we can notice many interesting details about this with the space view of the Earth and the meteorite impacting on it millions of years ago. We also notice it a lot throughout the movie with the scenes of the meteorite -which seems to be in the same place at a distance from the earth for half of the movie, but let's leave it at that-, the meteor shower in New York City or the huge meteorite falling in Paris. On the subject of explosions, disasters and so on you can notice Michael's great work with CGI and with practical effects and camera styles in motion or with panoramic views. The sound effects are also well done, but nothing that stands out more than usual. The soundtrack, on the other hand, manages to give an excellent impact and emotion to every dramatic or epic moment this film has. In short, this late 90s film is perfect for those who want to deactivate their brain for several hours and just be entertained with an audiovisual spectacle without logic or sense.

Personally, I give it a rating of 5.5/10 as far as the sci-fi and disaster genre is concerned.

Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos ahora sí del apartado técnico y visual de esta película. Los que llevamos tiempo viendo el trabajo de Michael Bay en el mundo del cine sabemos que en lo único en lo que logra destacarse de buena manera es en los efectos visuales y el buen uso del CGI en sus megaproducciones. Y esta película no es la excepción, ya que desde el principio podemos notar muchos detalles interesantes sobre esto con la vista espacial de la Tierra y el meteorito impactando sobre ella hace millones de años atrás. También lo notamos mucho a lo largo de la película con las escenas del meteorito -la cual parece que en toda la mitad de la película está en el mismo lugar a distancia de la tierra, pero eso dejémoslo así-, las de la lluvia de meteoritos en la ciudad de Nueva York o el meteorito enorme que cae en París. En cuanto al tema de las explosiones, desastres y demás se puede notar el gran trabajo de Michael con el CGI y con los efectos prácticos y estilos de cámara en movimiento o con vistas panorámicas. Los efectos de sonido también están bien hechos, pero nada que llame la atención más de lo normal. La banda sonora, por otro lado, consigue darle un excelente impacto y emoción a cada momento dramático o épico que tiene esta película. En resumen, esta cinta de finales de los 90s es perfecta para los que quieran desactivar su cerebro por varias horas y solo entretenerse con un espectáculo audiovisual sin lógica ni sentido.

Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 5.5/10 en lo que respecta al género de la ciencia ficción y catástrofes.
