Batman Returns (1992) | Nattosheru Review [ENG/SPA]

Now, let's talk about the movie that introduced me to Batman, one of my favorite superheroes since I was a kid. Imagine the enormous and unforgettable impact this movie had on me when I watched it dozens of times as a child because of how dark, violent, and disturbing it is. Honestly, because of movies like this, the only thing I clearly remember from my childhood is everything I saw on television. Among the many things that caught my attention, apart from the main character and the girl dressed as a cat, is the antagonist in this movie.

A mutant between human and penguin with a deformed body and flipper-like hands. Obviously, no child of that era, especially those of my generation, would ever forget this character. And worst of all, it's not just his appearance that causes horror, but also his behavior and attitude towards people. The curious thing about all this is that the film introduces and develops this character as if he were a complete victim of society, when in reality he is a consequence of it. But before I talk about this, I also want to highlight how the film divides its story into several parts from the beginning.

Ahora sí, vamos a hablar de la película que hizo que conociera a Batman, uno de mis superhéroes favoritos desde que era pequeño. Imagínense el enorme e inolvidable impacto que me generó esta película cuando la veía decenas de veces cuando niño debido a lo oscura, violenta y perturbadora que es. De verdad, por este tipo de películas es que lo único que recuerdo claramente de mi infancia era todo lo que veía en la televisión, nomás. De entre tantas cosas que me llamaron la atención, aparte de su protagonista y la chica vestida de gato, es el antagonista que tiene esta película.

Un mutante entre humano y pingüino con cuerpo deforme y manos con forma de aletas. Obviamente, ningún niño de aquella época y menos de los de mi generación llegaríamos a olvidarnos de este personaje. Y lo peor de todo es que no solo es su aspecto lo que causa horror, sino también su comportamiento y actitud con la gente. Lo curioso de todo esto es que esta película nos introduce y desarrolla a este personaje como si fuera una completa víctima de la sociedad, cuando es en realidad la consecuencia de la misma. Pero antes de hablarles de esto quiero destacar también cómo ésta película nos divide su historia en varias partes desde el inicio.

On one hand, we see the story of Oswald Cobblepot, who, after being thrown by his own parents into the depths of Gotham City's sewers, grows up as a member of a gang of dangerous criminals who pose as a traveling circus. On the other hand, we also meet the clumsy and shy secretary, Selina Kyle, who works for billionaire Max Shreck, who plans to build a power plant for the city. Upon discovering the secret behind the project, Selina is thrown from the top of the building. However, she survives the fall, but becomes a different person.

While we see a woman dressing up as a cat and going out at night in search of fun, the Penguin plans to use Max to make a name for himself with the Gotham City public and thus become mayor. What will Batman do to stop these individuals and save the city once again? It's fascinating how Tim Burton manages to tell a story like this, mixing deformed and dangerous characters with deranged women and circus clowns. The craziest thing about it all is seeing them try to live in this corrupt and materialistic society that is Gotham City.

Por un lado vemos la historia de Oswald Cobblepot, quien luego de ser echado por sus propios padres a las profundidades de las alcantarillas de Ciudad Gótica, este crece como miembro de una banda de criminales peligrosos que se hacen pasar por un circo ambulante. Por otro lado, conocemos también a la torpe y tímida secretaria, Selina Kyle, quien trabaja para el multimillonario Max Shreck, quien planea construir una planta de energía para la ciudad. Al descubrir el secreto detrás de dicho proyecto, Selina es lanzada desde lo más alto del edificio. Sin embargo, logra sobrevivir a la caída, pero se convierte en otra persona.

Mientras vemos a una mujer vestirse de gata y saliendo por las noches en busca de diversión, el Pingüino planea utilizar a Max para labrarse un nombre ante el público de Ciudad Gótica y así convertirse en alcalde. ¿Qué hará Batman para detener a estos individuos y así salvar a la ciudad una vez más? Es fascinante cómo Tim Burton logra contarnos una historia de este estilo mezclando a tipos deformes y peligrosos con mujeres trastornadas y payasos de circo. Lo más loco de todo esto es verlos intentar vivir en esta sociedad corrupta y materialista como lo es la gente de Ciudad Gótica.

I've said it before about his previous film, and that is that the way Tim Burton shows us what the inhabitants of this city are like is one of the most entertaining and absurd things there is. It's incredible to see these people accept a horrendous and disturbing being like the Penguin in this film as if it were nothing. The most absurd thing about all this is that they never realized what was going on around them, even though the evidence was right there in front of them. But hey, as surreal as it may seem, this unfortunately happens even in real life.

Today's society can be manipulated so easily that it's absurd to even think about it. Powerful or wealthy people are the ones who pull the strings from above and always create a theatrical spectacle, hiding the dark reality behind the scenes. We can see this reflected in this film when we see how Max uses his power and influence to try to make Oswald a candidate for mayor of the city. It is fascinating—and at the same time unpleasant—to see this deformed being trying to relate to people over and over again throughout the film. However, nothing turns out the way he wants it to.

Ya lo he dicho anteriormente con su película antecesora y es que la forma en la que Tim Burton nos muestra cómo son los habitantes de esta ciudad es de lo más divertido y absurdo que hay. Es increíble ver a esta gente aceptar como si nada a un ser horrendo y perturbador como lo es el Pingüino en esta película. Lo más absurdo de todo esto es que no se dieran cuenta nunca de todo lo que ocurría a su alrededor, a pesar de tener las evidencias ahí mismo a la vista. Pero bueno, por muy surrealista que parezca, esto lamentablemente ocurre incluso en la vida real.

La sociedad actual puede llegar a ser manipulada de manera tan fácil que es absurdo pensarlo siquiera. La gente poderosa o millonaria es la que mueve todo desde arriba y crea siempre un espectáculo teatral, ocultando la oscura realidad detrás de cámaras. Esto lo podemos ver reflejado en esta película al ver cómo Max utiliza su poder e influencia para intentar hacer de Oswald un candidato a alcalde de la ciudad. Es fascinante -y a la vez desagradable- ver a este ser deforme intentando relacionarse con la gente una y otra vez a lo largo de esa película. Sin embargo, nada sale como lo paleando.

This is when we talk about Selina Kyle, a girl who at first we see as the typical shy and clumsy secretary that no one pays attention to and who always walks around with her hair messy at work. After being thrown from the top of a building and surviving thanks to a group of cats, her personality changes completely. Now more cheerful and relaxed, she seeks revenge and releases all her pent-up feelings against every man who makes her life miserable. Yes, we see some sexism, machismo, and other similar details here, not only in this character but also in the others.

To be honest, I'm a little disappointed to see how clumsy and love-struck Batman is in this movie when he's with Catwoman. I guess it's part of her essence as an attractive girl who charms her enemies and all that, but it's not that big of a deal. I understand that the Penguin is a lunatic with hormones instead of a brain when he's with her, but even Bruce Wayne himself behaves too clumsily whenever he's with Selina. Then again, it's true that their relationship does develop somewhat when they mention over and over again that they are people with "a dark side" and all that, but oh well.

Aquí es cuando hablamos de Selina Kyle, una chica que al principio la vemos como la típica secretaria tímida y torpe que nadie le presta atención y que siempre anda con su cabello desaliñado en el trabajo. Luego de ser lanzada desde lo más alto de un edificio y sobrevivir gracias a un grupo de gatos, su personalidad cambia por completo. Siendo ahora alguien más alegre y relajada, busca desquitarse y liberar todo lo que tiene reprimido contra todo hombre que le haga la vida imposible. Si, aquí vemos algo de sexismo, machismo y otros detalles similares, no solo en este personaje, sino también en los demás.

Para serles sincero, me decepciona un poco ver lo torpe y enamoradizo que es Batman en esta película cuando está con Catwoman. Supongo que es parte de su esencia como una chica atractiva que engatusa a sus enemigos y todo eso, pero tampoco es para tanto. Entiendo que el Pingüino sea un lunático con hormonas en vez de cerebro cuando está con ella, pero hasta el mismo Bruce Wayne se comporta demasiado torpe cada vez que está con Selina. Luego si es cierto que tienen algo de desarrollo en su relación cuando mencionan una y otra vez que son personas con “un lado oscuro” y todo eso, pero bueno.

Returning to the film itself, I am fascinated by how dark it is, and I believe (and apparently I am not alone) that it is much darker than its predecessor. Just remembering the story of Oswald Cobblepot or his character as such is more than enough to feel dread and disturbance due to his hatred for humanity itself. The film shows us certain hidden messages that are quite disturbing now that I'm older and remember it well. And the fantastic thing about all this is that we mustn't forget that it's a superhero movie aimed, by extension, at a young audience.

Imagine being a kid and seeing a deformed guy sending a group of penguins with bombs to blow up the children of the city's millionaires. Or just seeing Oswald bite the nose of someone who joked with him is more than enough. In short, it's a very dark movie, even for its own time, which led to some criticism at the time. However, over time and today, opinions of this Batman sequel have changed for the better, and it is now a major reference point in the film industry and the superhero genre itself.

Volviendo a la película como tal, me fascina lo oscura que es y considero (no solo yo al parecer) que es mucho más oscura que su antecesora. Con solo recordar la historia de Oswald Cobblepot o su personaje como tal es más que suficiente para sentir pavor y perturbación debido al odio que le tiene a la misma humanidad. La película nos muestra ciertos mensajes ocultos que perturban bastante ahora de grande que la veo y la recuerdo bien. Y lo fantástico de todo esto es que no hay que olvidar que es una película de superhéroes dirigida, por extensión, a un público joven.

Imagínate ser un niño y ver cómo un tipo deforme manda a un grupo de pingüinos con bombas a mandar a volar a los hijos de los millonarios de la ciudad. O simplemente con ver a Oswald morderle la nariz a alguien que bromeó con él es más que suficiente. En fin, es una película muy oscura, incluso bastante para su propia época, lo cual hizo que recibiera ciertas críticas en su momento. Sin embargo, con el tiempo y en la actualidad la opinión de esta secuela de Batman ha cambiado a mejor, siendo ahora un gran referente en la industria del cine y del propio género de superhéroes.

One thing we have to admit about Tim Burton is that he doesn't really excel at action scenes and explosions. His talent lies in creating scenes that are disturbing, fascinating, and entertaining all at the same time. Achieving this is no easy feat, especially now with so many generic films out there. Only geniuses like Tim Burton can make you feel dread, horror, and fascination with a story that starts out like a horror movie, then turns into a film about deformed and deranged heroes and villains, and finally ends as a tragic love story.

By the way, I have absolutely nothing to complain about when it comes to the acting in this film. From Michael Keaton once again giving an excellent performance as the darkest, coldest, and most rule-breaking Dark Knight there is (although a little enamored with Catwoman). Danny DeVito shows us his talent by playing a cruel, bloodthirsty, and disturbing Penguin, not only in his physical appearance but also in his behavior and way of speaking. And let's not forget Michelle Pfeiffer, who gave us one of the most beloved versions of Catwoman.

Algo que sí hay que admitir de Tim Burton es que no se destaca mucho al momento de darnos escenas de acción y explosiones. Su talento está en darnos escenas perturbadoras, fascinantes y entretenidas al mismo tiempo. Lograr esto no es para nada fácil y mucho menos ahora con tantas cintas genéricas. Solo los genios como Tim Burton pueden hacerte sentir pavor, horror y fascinación con una historia que empieza como si fuera una cinta de terror para luego convertirse en una película de héroes y villanos deformes y trastornados; y finalmente terminar como una historia trágica de amor.

Por cierto, en cuanto al trabajo actoral del elenco de esta película no tengo nada de qué quejarme, en lo absoluto. Desde Michael Keaton demostrando de nuevo una excelente interpretación como el Caballero de la Noche más oscuro, frío y sin reglas que hay (aunque un poco enamoradizo con Catwoman). Danny DeVito quien nos demuestra su talento al interpretar a un Pingüino cruel, sanguinario y perturbador no solo en aspecto físico sino también con su conducta y forma de hablar. Y no hay que olvidarse de Michelle Pfeiffer quien nos dejó una de las versiones favoritas para muchos de Catwoman.

Last but not least, let's talk about the audiovisual aspect of Batman Returns. As expected, its quality is slightly better than its predecessor, but only slightly. It still maintains that feeling of being a 90s classic, but manages to stand out thanks to Tim Burton's unmistakable style. The character design, the views of Gotham City, and the dark, cold, and noisy tone of the film are excellent. As expected, Burton manages to capture each scene with a good use of static shots, transitions, and a precise use of light and shadow.

The practical visual effects are another highlight, starting with the characters' makeup and costumes. There is the iconic Batman suit that marked an entire generation, then there is Catwoman's suit, and finally there is the Penguin with his gray clothes and style of dress. Let's not forget the famous Batcar and the amount of equipment and weapons the protagonist has. We can also see how they used real penguins and others made by animatronics and some CGI at the end. The sound effects are also impressive, but the highlight is the film's soundtrack, as expected thanks to the work of Danny Elfman. In short, I recommend this film to anyone who claims to be a Batman fan.

Personally, I give it a rating of 9.5/10 in terms of the action, fantasy, and superhero genres.

Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos ahora del apartado audiovisual de Batman Returns. Como era de esperarse, su calidad es un poco mejor que su antecesora, pero solo un poco. Sigue manteniendo esa sensación de ser un clásico de los 90s, pero logra destacarse por ese estilo inconfundible que nos transmite Tim Burton. El diseño de los personajes, las vistas de la Ciudad Gótica y el tono oscuro, frío y ruidoso que tiene la película es excelente. Como es de esperarse, Burton logra capturar cada escena con un buen manejo de planos fijos, transiciones y un uso puntual de las luces y las sombras.

Los efectos visuales prácticos son otro detalle a destacar, empezando por el maquillaje y la vestimenta de los personajes. Está el icónico traje de Batman que marcó a toda una generación, luego está el traje de Catwoman y por último está el Pingüino con su ropa gris y su estilo de vestir. No hay que olvidarnos tampoco del famoso Batimovil y la cantidad de equipos y armas que tiene el protagonista. También podemos ver cómo usaron pingüinos reales y otros hechos por animatrónicos y algo de CGI al final. Los efectos de sonido tampoco se quedan atrás, pero lo más destacado es la banda sonora de esta película, como era de esperarse gracias al trabajo de Danny Elfman. En fin, aquí les dejo esta película para todo el que diga ser fans de Batman.

Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 9.5/10 en lo que respecta al género de acción, fantasía y superhéroes.
