Beetlejuice (1988) | Nattosheru Review [ENG/SPA]

I'll be honest: It wasn't until very recently that I got to see this Tim Burton film. Before that, I never had the chance to see it as a child, or at least not that I can remember. While I remember many classic films that I saw at that time and that have stayed in my memory because of the impact they had (or the enormous number of times I've seen them), I don't remember all those films very well. Either because I don't know their names or simply because I haven't seen any of those movies over time. But one that I have heard many people talk about and give their opinions on is the film I'm bringing you today.

Despite never having seen it in my life (as far as I can remember), it has somehow influenced my childhood and pre-adolescence as a Tim Burton fan. It wasn't until a couple of years ago that I found out he was the director of this movie. But I knew it was a cult classic and a major reference point in the film industry, especially in the horror and comedy genres. I also knew that its popularity in mainstream culture is so great that it remains so today, decades after it was released in theaters. Obviously, the sequel that was recently released revived this franchise.

Le seré sincero: no fue sino hasta hace muy poco que llegué a ver esta película de Tim Burton. Antes de eso, nunca tuve la oportunidad de verla cuando era niño, o al menos no que yo recuerde. Si bien me acuerdo de muchas películas clásicas que vi en aquella época y que se han quedado en mi memoria por el impacto que han tenido (o la cantidad enorme de veces que las he visto), no recuerdo bien todas esas películas. Ya sea porque no sepa sus nombres o simplemente porque no he visto nada de dichas películas a lo largo del tiempo. Pero una que sí he escuchado hablar y opinar de mucha gente es la cinta que les traigo hoy.

A pesar de no haberla visto en mi vida (que yo recuerde), de cierta manera ha influenciado en mi infancia y preadolescencia como fanático de Tim Burton. En realidad no fue sino hasta hace un par de años que me enteré de que él fue quien dirigió esta película. Pero de resto sabía que era una obra de culto y un gran referente en la industria del cine, sobre todo en el género del terror y la comedia. También que su popularidad en la cultura general es tan grande que incluso se mantiene al día de hoy, décadas después de que se estrenase en cines. Obviamente, la secuela que sacaron recientemente hizo que reviviera esta franquicia.

But what's interesting about all this is how Beetlejuice became so popular in its day and even today. When I finally got to see it a few hours ago, I discovered the reason for this and also understood why it became such a success for Tim Burton. What appears to be the simple story of a married couple seeking to live in peace and solitude in their old house on the hill suddenly turns into a horror story with ghosts, otherworldly beings, and giant sandworms. After Barbara and Adam Maitland suffer that tragic incident on the bridge, we see them return home.

However, they notice something strange about themselves and their surroundings when, suddenly, Adam leaves the house and is transported to a huge, strange desert with a giant worm about to eat him. Upon returning to the house, Barbara says he was gone for hours when in reality only a couple of seconds had passed. Another strange thing they notice is that they are not reflected in mirrors and that they can also manipulate matter, such as fire and objects. But what makes them realize that they are actually dead is when they see a book in their room with the title "Manual for the Recently Deceased".

Pero lo interesante de todo esto es cómo Beetlejuice llegó a ser tan popular en su tiempo e incluso en la actualidad. Cuando logré verla al fin hace unas horas, descubrí la razón de esto y comprendí también el por qué se convirtió en todo un éxito para Tim Burton. Lo que pareciera ser la historia simple de una pareja de casados que buscan vivir en paz y a solas en su vieja casa en la colina, se convierte de repente en una historia de terror con fantasmas, seres del otro mundo y gusanos gigantes de arena. Luego de que Bárbara y Adam Maitland sufrieran ese trágico incidente en el puente, los vemos regresar a su casa.

Sin embargo, algo extraño notan en ellos y en su alrededor cuando, de repente y al salir Adam de la casa, se transporta a un enorme y extraño desierto con un gusano gigante a punto de comerlo. Al regresar a la casa, Bárbara dice que estuvo fuera por horas cuando en realidad pasó solo un par de segundos. Otra cosa extraña que notan es que no se ven reflejados en los espejos y que pueden también manipular la materia, como el fuego y los objetos. Pero lo que los hace entrar en razón de que en realidad están muertos es cuando en su estancia ven un libro con el nombre de “Manual para los recién fallecidos”.

The way things happen seems like something out of a cartoon. Although we see the couple fall into the river in their car and everything, we then see them enter their house as if nothing had happened. This transition, along with everything that happens afterwards, creates a family atmosphere that is very different from what we usually feel when watching a horror movie with ghosts. Clearly, Beetlejuice serves as a perfect satire of the type of horror movies that were becoming popular at the time. The mix of humor with bizarre things and otherworldly beings gives this film a unique touch that only Tim Burton can achieve.

But the best or craziest part of all is what happens next, when the house of our ghost couple begins to be inhabited by a high-society New York family. The problem is that, apart from being lonely and modest, they don't like the idea of sharing their home with a family made up of a good-for-nothing, an "artist" with strange tastes, and a gothic girl (the first we'll see in this Tim Burton movie special) with a depressive aura. It's no surprise that the ghost couple then tried to scare these people away, albeit unsuccessfully. Here we see another interesting take on life "beyond death".

La forma en la que suceden las cosas parece sacado de una caricatura. Si bien notamos cuando la pareja cae al río dentro del auto y todo, luego los vemos entrar a su casa como si nada hubiera pasado. Esta transición, junto con todo lo que ocurre después crea un ambiente familiar muy atípico a lo que comúnmente sentimos al ver una película de terror con fantasmas. Claramente, Beetlejuice sirve como una sátira perfecta para dicho tipo de películas de terror que, en aquel entonces, empezaron a volverse populares. La mezcla de humor con cosas bizarras y seres del otro mundo le da a esta cinta un toque único que sólo Tim Burton puede conseguir.

Pero lo mejor o lo más loco de todo es lo que ocurre después, cuando la casa de nuestra pareja de fantasmas empieza a ser habitada por una familia neoyorquina de la alta sociedad. Lo malo de esto es que, aparte de ser solitarios y modestos, no les gusta la idea de compartir su casa con una familia conformada por un bueno para nada, una “artista” con gustos extraños y una chica gótica (la primera que veremos en este especial de películas de Tim Burton) y con un aura depresiva. No es de extrañar que luego la pareja de fantasmas intentase ahuyentar a esta gente, aunque sin éxito alguno. Aquí vemos otro plano interesante sobre la vida “más allá de la muerte”.

The film's take on death is undoubtedly the most interesting aspect of all, as we see our two protagonists wandering around the world of the living, but only within their own home. They cannot leave because otherwise they are transported to a desert world full of giant sandworms (yes, this resembles Dune). On the other hand, they receive an instruction manual for the newly deceased that is not at all easy to understand. But even so, the importance of "reading the manual" is emphasized throughout the film when they try to remove the new family from their home before they finish remodeling it.

This may be a way of seeing the world of the dead as a supernatural version of the real world. I say this as a personal interpretation, but the clear and constant reference to reality with its many norms, rules, and complicated legal procedures to achieve justice is difficult to ignore in this film. That is why, in this striking way, the film finally introduces us to the antagonist or main character of this film: Beetlejuice. He is presented as a kind of rebel, a being from the underworld who wanders around cemeteries.

La visión que tiene esta película de la muerte es sin duda lo más interesante de todo, ya que vemos a nuestra pareja de protagonistas vagar en el mundo de los vivos, pero solamente dentro de su propia casa. No pueden salir porque sino son transportados a un mundo desértico y repleto de gusanos gigantes de arena (si, esto parece Dune). Por otro lado, reciben un manual de instrucciones para recién fallecidos que no es para nada fácil de entender. Pero aún así nos recalcan la importancia de “leer el manual” a lo largo de toda la película cuando intentan sacar a la nueva familia de su casa antes de que terminen de remodelarla.

Esto puede que sea una forma de ver el mundo de los muertos como una versión sobrenatural del mundo real. Esto lo digo como una interpretación personal nomás, pero la clara y constante referencia a la realidad con sus tantas normas, reglas y complicados procedimientos legales para llegar a conseguir algo de justicia es difícil de ignorar en esta película. Es por eso que, de esta forma tan llamativa, la película nos introduce al fin al antagonista o personaje principal de esta película: Beetlejuice. Lo presentan como una clase de rebelde, un ser del inframundo que vaga en los cementerios.

His introduction in this film is also something else that draws a lot of attention. I'm not just talking about his physical appearance, which is clearly grotesque, uncontrolled, and completely immoral. Although at first he presents himself as someone desperate to be "hired" to "solve" the problems that our ghost couple has in their house, the truth is that he ends up being much more cruel and ruthless than he appears. He is a complete liar, manipulator, and a genius at getting into trouble and wreaking havoc even in the real world. His mere presence is a clear sign of chaos and calamity.

Yes, he's quite a character, and I think it's Beetlejuice that made the movie such a huge success, both commercially and with audiences and critics alike. For a comedy movie, I should warn you that it has a rather suggestive tone, with double entendres and somewhat obscene scenes (it was definitely a different era). But hey, let's not forget that it's a horror movie, so this other side of it shows us many quite graphic and disturbing elements that could easily traumatize any child today. Although, I don't know if it really terrifies them with Tim Burton's unique and striking style.

Su introducción en esta película es también otra cosa que llama muchísimo la atención. No solo lo digo por su aspecto físico, siendo evidente un ser grotesco, descontrolado y sin moral en lo absoluto. Si bien al principio se presenta como alguien desesperado por ser “contratado” para “resolverle” los problemas que tiene nuestra pareja de fantasmas en su casa, la verdad es que termina siendo alguien mucho más cruel y despiadado de lo que aparenta. Es un completo mentiroso, manipulador y un genio para meterse en problemas y causar estragos incluso en el mundo real. Su mera presencia es una clara señal de caos y calamidad.

Si, es todo un personaje y creo que es Beetlejuice lo que hizo que la peli se volviera un completo éxito tanto comercial como también para el público y parte de la crítica. Para ser una película de comedia les advierto que tiene un tono demasiado sugerente con chistes de doble sentido y escenas un tanto obscenas (definitivamente, eran otras épocas). Pero bueno, tampoco hay que olvidar que es una cinta de terror, así que este otro lado de la misma nos muestra muchos elementos bastante gráficos y perturbadores que fácilmente pueden traumar a cualquier niño en la actualidad. Aunque, no sé si de verdad les cause terror con el estilo tan único y llamativo que tiene Tim Burton.

I say this because we often see how certain beings from the underworld are "humanized", just as we see how our ghostly couple and protagonists become true nightmares. But the most interesting thing about all this is how the plot ends up developing a kind of relationship between Barbara and Adam with little Lydia Deetz. The lessons that can be learned from this film may be difficult to understand at first, but there is something that stands out among so many jokes, satires, and absurd moments. I am referring to the "strange", that which is different for society.

From the beginning, we see that even the main characters prove to be different by preferring to stay home rather than go on vacation. There is also the Deetz family, where both the mother and little Lydia are quite strange characters in certain ways. The one who stands out the most is Lydia with her gothic style of dress and the depressive aura she carries around all the time. Her fascination with the paranormal and the different is the only thing that keeps her going, as she feels identified with it in some way. This is how Tim Burton has impacted an entire generation (or two) with his style and narrative.

Digo esto porque frecuentemente vemos cómo “humanizan” a ciertos seres del mismo inframundo, así como también vemos cómo nuestra pareja de fantasmas y protagonistas se convierten en unas auténticas pesadillas. Pero lo más interesante de todo esto es cómo la trama termina desarrollando una especie de relación entre Bárbara y Adam con la pequeña Lydia Deetz. Las lecciones que se pueden sacar de esta película puede que sean difíciles de entender al principio, pero hay algo que se destaca de entre tantos chistes, sátiras y momentos absurdos. Me refiero a lo “extraño”, eso que es diferente para la sociedad.

Desde un principio vemos que incluso la pareja de protagonistas demuestran ser diferentes al preferir estar encerrados en casa que salir de viaje en sus vacaciones. También está la familia Deetz quienes tanto la madre como la pequeña Lydia son personajes bastante extraños en ciertos sentidos. La que más resalta es Lydia con su estilo gótico de vestir y su aura depresiva que carga todo el tiempo. Su fascinación por lo paranormal y lo diferente es lo único que la mantiene con ganas de vivir ya que se siente identificada de alguna manera. Es así como Tim Burton impacta en toda una generación (o dos) con su estilo y narrativa.

Finally, I want to talk about the audiovisual aspect of this film. I must say that you can really tell how old it is, as it was made more than thirty years ago. Even so, the directing, art, and cinematography are excellent, even for its time. Tim Burton, as always, manages to stand out not only with his artistic direction, but also with his use of moving photography styles to move his characters from one world to another without losing their sense of direction, thanks to excellent transitions. The varied color palette and dark tones are also key.

The same is true of the makeup, costumes, and basic visual effects. The grotesque and graphic aspects of the characters we see in the underworld, or even Beetlejuice himself, are clear evidence of the great work that went into the aesthetics and visuals. For example, in the case of the giant sandworm, it is very obvious that it was made using stop motion, and even with its details and flaws, it still looks pretty decent for an 80s film. The sound effects aren't bad, but something that stands out above all else is undoubtedly its soundtrack. Anyway, I'll leave this movie here for those who are true Tim Burton fans.

Personally, I give it a rating of 8/10 in terms of the horror, fantasy, and comedy genres.

Por último, quiero hablarles del aspecto audiovisual que tiene esta película. De una les digo que se nota bastante el tiempo que tiene al ser una película de hace ya más de treinta años. Aún así el estilo de dirección, arte y fotografía que posee es excelente incluso para su época. Tim Burton, como siempre, logra destacarse no solo con su dirección artística, sino por esa manera de utilizar estilos de fotografía en movimiento para desplazar a sus personajes de un mundo a otro sin perder el sentido de orientación con transiciones excelentes. La paleta de colores variados y con ese tono oscuro es también clave.

Lo mismo sucede con el estilo de maquillaje, vestimenta y recursos o efectos visuales básicos. Los aspectos grotescos y gráficos de los personajes que vemos en el inframundo o hasta en el mismo Beetlejuice son una prueba clara del gran trabajo que hubo detrás a nivel estético y visual. Por ejemplo, para el caso del gusano gigante de arena se nota muchísimo que está hecho por Stop Motion y aún con sus detalles y defectos se sigue viendo un tanto decente para ser una cinta de los 80. Los efectos de sonido no están mal, pero algo que sí se destaca por sobre todo lo anterior es sin duda su banda sonora. En fin, les dejo esta película aquí para los que de verdad son fans de Tim Burton.

Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 8/10 en lo que respecta al género del terror, fantasía y comedia.
