In this case, the film we have in store for us today became for me a very valuable work both for its story and for its characters and lessons that are simply unforgettable. And I confirm this now, after having seen it dozens of times when I was a child and I was very amused by the idea of a robot seeking to become a human being. Now that I have seen it again after so many years, I consider it a gem of cinema for having a unique mix of elements, genres and interpretations that makes it unique in its kind. I say this not only because of the excellent acting work of Robin Williams, but also because of the impressive way it deals with themes such as freedom, love and death, which even today continues to have a great impact on me. Despite its failure at the box office and critics at the time, with the passage of time this film has become a cult work for true fans of contemporary cinema. While it is not considered one of the best of its time, it does not detract from the fact that for a feature film about robots, drama, romance and comedy, it has a very impressive level of aesthetic and narrative quality.

Ya he dicho en cierta ocasión que son muy pocas las películas de ciencia ficción que me han impactado bastante desde que era pequeño y que aún al día de hoy lo siguen haciendo. En este caso, la película que nos depara hoy llegó a ser para mí una obra muy valiosa tanto por su historia como también por sus personajes y lecciones que son simplemente inolvidables. Y esto lo confirmo ahora, luego de haberla visto decenas de veces cuando era pequeño y me divertía mucho la idea de un robot buscando convertirse en un ser humano. Al día de hoy que la he vuelto a ver después de tantos años considero que es una joya del cine por poseer una mezcla única de elementos, géneros e interpretaciones que la hace única en su tipo. Esto no lo digo únicamente por el excelente trabajo actoral que realiza Robin Williams, sino también por la manera tan impresionante de tratar temas como la libertad, el amor y la muerte que, aún al día de hoy me sigue impactando bastante. A pesar de su fracaso en taquilla y la crítica en su momento, con el paso del tiempo esta película se ha convertido en una obra de culto para los verdaderos fanáticos del cine contemporáneo. Si bien no es considerado de los mejores en su época, no quita que para ser un largometraje de robots, drama, romance y comedia tiene un nivel de calidad estético y narrativo muy impresionante.

Over the years, Andrew receives lessons and learns about various topics of human life with the help of his current owner, along with the different books he reads daily. Decades pass, daughters grow up, get married and leave home. Things change, but Andrew is still there along with Richard always at his service, although he has not received any orders for some time. One day, however, the robot, who is becoming more and more interested in humans, starts to think about freedom. Learning from human history, Andrew has noticed that for centuries mankind has struggled tirelessly to find such freedom. This is why he asks himself, "what do I have to do to be truly free?". It is here that he begins to desire his own freedom, something he achieves thanks to the understanding of his now aging owner who from that moment on remains part of his family, as he has always been. From this point on, Andrew will begin to see himself as a living being, a human being and not as a simple robot (if I'm not mistaken, "robot" means "slave").

I've already been telling you that both the plot and the rest of the story that this movie tells us is one of the best I've ever seen in my life. The way in which a simple robot, a machine made by man in "his image and likeness" begins to think and feel things that no other robot is capable of doing is something very interesting. However, what we see throughout the more than two hours of this feature film is nothing less than the extensive path Andrew has taken from being a simple android to becoming a real human. The way he comes to transcend over the years as he learns from the lives of others and from his own decisions and actions makes us think how fascinating it is. Things like art, music, carpentry, food and so on are the things that are seen in amazing ways in the eyes of our robotic protagonist. Along with this great journey of self-discovery made by Andrew there are different challenges that he is going to face in order to be able to consider himself as a real human. Among these challenges is that we notice the variety of complex themes such as mortality, love, carnal desires and death. We can also notice curious details regarding the protagonist who, when he gets to the point of appearing to be more human, we can also notice that he is still a robot on the inside. In general, this film has one of the best developments that can be given to an inorganic character like Andrew.

Pero para adentrarnos más con el tema, empecemos con la historia que nos intentan contar en esta película. Como ya les mencioné arriba, esta historia gira en torno a Andrew, un curioso androide con cerebro positrónico que realiza diversas labores del hogar en casa de la familia Martin. Luego de ver que posee cierto interés y algunas señales de sentimientos en su robot, Richard decide tratarlo como a un humano y no como a una simple máquina. Durante los años, Andrew recibe lecciones y aprende de diversos temas de la vida humana con la ayuda de su actual dueño, junto con los diferentes libros que lee a diario. Pasan las décadas, las hijas crecen, se casan y se van de la casa. Las cosas cambian, pero Andrew sigue ahí junto con Richard siempre a su servicio, aunque lleva tiempo sin recibir ninguna órden. Sin embargo, un día, el robot que cada vez se interesa más por los humanos empieza a pensar sobre la libertad. Desde ya les vengo diciendo que tanto la trama como el resto de la historia que nos cuenta esta película es de lo mejor que he visto en mi vida. La manera en la que un simple robot, una máquina hecha por el hombre a “su imagen y semejanza” empiece a pensar y sentir cosas que ningún otro robot es capaz de hacer es algo muy interesante. Sin embargo, lo que vemos a lo largo de las más de dos horas de duración que tiene este largometraje es nada menos que el extenso camino que ha tomado Andrew para pasar de ser un simple androide a convertirse en un humano de verdad. La manera en la que él llega a trascender con el paso de los años mientras aprende de la vida de los demás y de sus propias decisiones y acciones nos hace pensar en lo fascinante que es. Cosas como el arte, la música, la carpintería, la comida y demás son las que se ven de manera asombrosa a los ojos de nuestro robótico protagonista. Junto con este gran viaje de autodescubrimiento realizado por Andrew existen diferentes desafíos que va a afrontar para así poder considerarse a sí mismo como un humano de verdad. Entre esos desafíos es que notamos la variedad de temas complejos como la mortalidad, el amor, los deseos carnales y la muerte. También podemos notar detalles curiosos en cuanto al protagonista que, al llegar a tal punto de aparentar ser más humano, se puede notar también que sigue siendo un robot por dentro. En regla general, esta película posee uno de los mejores desarrollos que se le puede dar a un personaje inorgánico como lo es Andrew.

Another thing that I really liked about this movie from the beginning is both Robin Williams' (Andrew) lead performance and also his humorous touch and style that characterizes him so well. The fact that a science fiction and drama movie also has comedy is something that, in many cases, can be somewhat counterproductive. But in this case the film has an excellent introduction and development thanks to the funny and gentle personality of the main character, as well as his very particular way of acting and behaving like a robot. Of course, we have to accept that at some point in the movie his humor and personality feels a bit mechanical (it's ironic since we are talking about a robot, but hey) and even one or two jokes he throws out feel a bit out of place due to the moment and the environment in which he finds himself. Obviously, this doesn't discount the fact that this is some of the best acting work Robin has done in his entire career. There are even parts in which he delivers certain dialogues or monologues that are simply poetry and leave you thinking a lot about the different themes that this film deals with. It is to be expected that his performance is what led this work to be a great reference in the world of cinema today. As for the rest of the characters we meet, I don't have much to say beyond that they fulfill their respective roles, which are mostly to demonstrate certain behaviors or situations in which the protagonist learns about good and evil and about human nature in general.

Now, as I mentioned at the beginning, this movie also has romance, something that can be considered as "the icing on the cake" for this cinematic work. Among the different relationships and friendships that Andrew gets throughout this story, we get to know his feelings and desires regarding a certain person (I will not name names so as not to give spoilers). Perhaps and it is the same one who made him begin to want to understand humans and imitate them, to a certain extent. This is a friendship that, over the years, develops into something deeper and stronger. However, due to the typical cliché of being a relationship between a human and a robot, the fear of not being accepted by society and the criticisms make this desire remain hidden deep in the heart of both of them. However, as fate would have it, we see how generations pass and a familiar face awakens those old feelings and desires that our immortal Andrew has for someone who looks like her, but is not the same as the person he grew up with. It can be said that it is this very feeling, love, which gave birth to one of the most emblematic characters of the genre and cinema of this century. And the way in which everything we see from beginning to end translates into a demonstration of love for becoming a real human and thus being accepted as such is one of the most valuable things this film has to offer. Undoubtedly, this film is one of the most underrated that has ever existed in today's history.

Otra cosa que me gustó mucho de esta película desde su principio es tanto la actuación protagónica de Robin Williams (Andrew) como también su toque y estilo humorístico que lo caracteriza tan bien. El hecho de que una película de ciencia ficción y drama tenga también comedia es algo que, en muchos casos, puede ser un tanto contraproducente. Pero en este caso la película posee una excelente introducción y desarrollo gracias a la personalidad graciosa y gentil del protagonista, como también su forma tan particular de actuar y comportarse como un robot. Claro, hay que aceptar que en cierto momento de la película su humor y personalidad se siente un tanto mecánico (es irónico ya que estamos hablando de un robot, pero bueno) e incluso uno que otro chiste que lanza se siente un tanto fuera de lugar debido al momento y el ambiente en el que se encuentra. Obviamente, esto no descarta que sea de los mejores trabajos actorales que Robin haya realizado en toda su carrera. Incluso hay partes en las que lanza ciertos diálogos o monólogos que son simplemente poesía y te dejan pensando bastante sobre los diferentes temas que trata esta cinta. Es de esperarse que su actuación sea lo que llevó a esta obra a ser un gran referente en el mundo del cine al día de hoy. En cuanto al resto de los personajes que vamos conociendo no tengo mucho que decir más allá de que cumplen con sus respectivos papeles, los cuales mayormente son para demostrar ciertas conductas o situaciones en las que el protagonista aprende sobre el bien y el mal y sobre la naturaleza humana en general.

Ahora, como mencioné al principio, esta película también tiene romance, algo que se puede considerar como “la cereza del pastel” para esta obra cinematográfica. Entre las diferentes relaciones y amistades que consigue Andrew a lo largo de esta historia, vamos conociendo sus sentimientos y deseos con respecto a cierta persona (no diré nombres para no dar spoilers). Tal vez y sea la misma quien hizo que empezará a desear entender a los humanos e imitarlos, hasta cierto punto. Está es una amistad que, con el paso de los años, se va desarrollando como algo más profundo y fuerte. Sin embargo, por el típico cliché de ser una relación entre un humano y un robot, el temor por no ser aceptado por la sociedad y las críticas hacen que dicho deseo se quede escondido en lo más profundo del corazón de ambos. Sin embargo, como cosa del destino, vemos cómo las generaciones pasan y un rostro familiar hace despertar esos viejos sentimientos y deseos que tiene nuestro inmortal Andrew por alguien que se parece a ella, pero que no es igual a la persona con la que creció. Se puede decir que es este mismo sentimiento, el amor, lo que dió nacimiento a uno de los personajes más emblemáticos del género y del cine de este siglo. Y es que la manera en la que todo lo que vemos de principio a fin se traduce en una demostración de amor por convertirse en un humano de verdad y así ser aceptado como tal es de lo más valioso que tiene esta película para dar. But now, after more than twenty years, it can be said that it is one of the films that has aged better visually to date. From the very beginning you can notice a level of visual quality with detail and a huge budget with the wonderful introduction it has. Both the robot construction sequence and the background soundtrack is some of the best I've seen and heard from that era. Both the makeup theme, the practical effects, the computer effects, the NDR design, the landscapes and the futuristic aesthetics of the houses and cities in this film are some of the best. Even for a drama/romance/comedy film it's amazing to see such a level of detail in terms of cameras, transitions, visual effects, vivid color palettes and styles. I think what I like most about it all is the mix of futuristic with classic and contemporary throughout the film. I am also quite fascinated by the soundtrack, especially the musicalization of each scene and what it is conveying. The sound effects are also quite remarkable, to be honest. Anyway, this is a sci-fi movie very different from most, with a fantastic story that I highly recommend watching if you are a fan.

Personally, I give it a 9/10 rating for the sci-fi, drama, comedy and romance genre.

Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos ahora del apartado técnico y visual que tiene esta película. Con un presupuesto de hasta 100 millones de dólares, este largometraje de más de dos horas de duración (repito por tercera vez, si) es de los más costosos que se han producido de aquella época. Lamentablemente, debido a su fracaso en taquilla, fue una pérdida total en su momento. Pero ahora, después de más de veinte años, se puede decir que es de las cintas que mejor se han envejecido visualmente hasta la fecha de hoy. Desde un principio se puede notar un nivel de calidad visual con detalles y un enorme presupuesto con la maravillosa introducción que tiene. Tanto la secuencia de la construcción del robot como la banda sonora de fondo es de lo mejor que he visto y escuchado de aquella época. Tanto el tema del maquillaje, los efectos prácticos, los efectos hechos a computadora, el diseño de los NDR, los paisajes y la estética futurista de las casas y las ciudades en esta película es de lo mejor. Aún para ser una película de drama, romance y comedia es increíble ver un nivel de detalles en cuanto a cámaras, transiciones, efectos visuales, paletas de colores vivos y estilos. Creo que lo que más me gusta de todo esto es la mezcla de lo futurista con lo clásico y contemporáneo a lo largo de la película. En fin, esta es una película de ciencia ficción muy diferente a la mayoría, con una historia fantástica que recomiendo bastante ver si eres fan.

Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 9/10 en lo que respecta al género de la ciencia ficción, el drama, la comedia y el romance.
