Big Fish (2003) | Nattosheru Review [ENG/SPA]

To be honest, I didn't know this movie was by Tim Burton until recently, when I remembered it while making the list for this special feature. I remember quite well how many times I watched this film when I was a child and even more so as a teenager. Clearly, there were many reasons for someone like me to watch a film like this. Apart from its great story, what I like most about Big Fish is its unique blend of adventure, fantasy, drama, and comedy. All this, together with Tim Burton's unique direction, makes this film one of the best in his entire filmography.

There are certainly better choices, personally, especially the movie I brought you last time. But if you're someone who likes fantastic stories, full of adventures and completely unexpected, absurd, and even funny plot twists, then Big Fish is for you. This film stands out from most others because of its narrative structure, which is composed of various stories that are part of the life of a single character: Edward Bloom. He would be the perfect protagonist for any fantasy story, if that were what this film were about, which is not entirely the case.

Si les soy honesto, no sabía que esta película era de Tim Burton sino hasta hace poco que la recordé al momento de hacer la lista de este especial. Recuerdo bastante bien la cantidad de veces que veía esta cinta desde que era pequeño y más cuando adolescente. Claramente, tenía muchas razones para que alguien como yo viera una película como esta. Aparte de su grandiosa historia, lo que más me gusta de Big Fish es la mezcla única que posee de aventura con fantasía, drama y comedia. Todo esto junto con la dirección única de Tim Burton hacen de esta cinta una de las mejores de toda su filmografía.

Ciertamente hay elecciones mejores, en lo personal, sobre todo la película que les traje la vez pasada. Pero si eres de los que les gustan las historias fantásticas, repletas de aventuras y giros de trama completamente inesperados, absurdos y hasta graciosos, entonces Big Fish es lo tuyo. Esta película se destaca por sobre la mayoría debido a su apartado narrativo, el cual está compuesto por diversas historias que forman parte de la vida de un solo personaje: Edward Bloom. Este sería el perfecto protagonista para cualquier historia fantástica, solo si de eso se tratara esta película, lo cual no es del todo así.

Something that really struck me when I watched Big Fish after a long time without seeing it was the contrast between the plot itself and the stories Edward tells his family in his old age, and what we actually discover about his past. If I told you each of these stories, they wouldn't have the same effect as seeing and hearing them in his own voice in this film. That's why I'll focus more on the plot itself and the relationship Edward has with his family, especially with his only son, William.

In this regard, it's interesting to note that the film takes several different directions in terms of its story, the main one being that of an adult son who is tired of hearing the same fantastic stories from his father. As we watch each story being told and narrated in such an entertaining way, we can also see the relationship between father and son. When our beloved Edward Bloom falls ill, his son Will decides to return to his parents' home with his pregnant wife to keep them company in their final days.

Y es que algo que me llamó muchísimo la atención al ver Big Fish, después de mucho tiempo sin haberla visto, fue el contraste que tiene en su propia trama con las historias que nos cuenta Edward en una edad ya mayor a sus familiares y lo que uno va descubriendo realmente de su pasado. Si les contara cada una de dichas historias no tendrían el mismo efecto que verlas y escucharlas por su propia voz en esta película. Es por eso que me centraré más en la trama como tal y esa relación que Edward tiene con su familia, en especial con su único hijo, William.

En cuanto a esto, es interesante notar que la película posee diversas direcciones en cuanto a su historia, siendo la principal de un hijo ya mayor que está cansado de escuchar las mismas historias fantásticas de su padre. Mientras vemos cada historia ser contada y narrada de una manera tan entretenida, podemos ver también esa relación que tienen padre e hijo. Cuando nuestro querido Edward Bloom cae en cama debido a su mala salud, su hijo Will decide regresar a casa de sus padres junto con su esposa que está embarazada para así hacerles compañía en sus últimos días de vida.

That's right, the contrast between all these fantastic stories told by our protagonist is much more tragic and cold than one can imagine. The fact is that real life can often be sad, tragic, and boring for many people. That's why there are fantastic stories full of witches with glass eyes, giants who eat humans, and circus owners who turn into wolves. All these stories that spark our imagination are like an escape from real life for many. This may include our protagonist Edward who, from a very young age, believed he was born to be someone important in his life.

Perhaps the enormous number of fantastic and surreal stories he tells all the time are a way of escaping from that tragic, depressing, and uninteresting reality. This can happen to anyone, especially when they reach adulthood and are closer to their death. It is normal to see and hear stories that are somewhat embellished by our storytellers, giving them that touch of interest and intrigue that they need. But there are times when it is simply not good to live in fantasy and you have to know how to face reality. Obviously, Edward's case is an example that not everything is fantasy.

Así es, el contraste de todas estas historias fantásticas que nos cuenta nuestro protagonista es mucho más trágico y frío de lo que uno se puede imaginar. Y es que la vida real muchas veces puede llegar a ser algo triste, trágico y aburrido para muchos. Es por eso que existen las historias fantásticas repletas de brujas con ojos de cristal, gigantes que comen humanos y dueños de circos que se convierten en lobos. Todas estas historias que hacen volar nuestra imaginación son como un escape de la vida real para muchos. Esto puede incluir a nuestro protagonista Edward quien, desde muy joven, creyó que nació para ser alguien importante en su vida.

Tal vez y la enorme cantidad de historias fantásticas y surrealistas que cuenta todo el tiempo son para escapar de dicha realidad trágica, deprimente y para nada interesante. A todo el mundo le puede llegar a suceder esto, sobre todo a su mayoría de edad y más cerca de su fecha de muerte. Es normal poder ver y escuchar historias un tanto adornadas por nuestros locutores y que le dan ese toque de interés e intriga que necesita. Pero hay momentos en los que simplemente no es bueno vivir de la fantasía y hay que saber afrontar la realidad. Obviamente, el caso de Edward es un ejemplo de que no todo es fantasía.

However, before I do, I want to mention another interesting detail that really caught my attention in this film, and that is its characters. Tim Burton is definitely a genius at creating fantastic, dark characters who are different in more ways than one, and I think this film really highlights that. Especially because in each story they tell us, we meet different characters who really grab our attention.

Among the many things that can be gleaned from Big Fish, another detail that caught my attention is the theme of romance, which is quite fleeting, but at the same time very emotional and fun to watch. What definitely makes this film special is that each story we see from beginning to end is part of Edward Bloom's entire life. Imagine turning your life into a series of unimaginable fantastic tales that you can tell children and adults alike. Everyone would like to have a life like that, and I think this film leaves us with that feeling as a message, especially those of us who still have a lot to live for.

Pero contarles más sobre esto es darles un spoiler, cosa que no haré para los que aún no han visto esta película y estén interesados en verla en este preciso momento. Sin embargo, antes de hacerlo, quiero que me dejes mencionar otro detalle interesante que me llamó mucho la atención de esta película y son sus personajes. Definitivamente, Tim Burton es todo un genio para crear personajes fantásticos, oscuros, diferentes en más de un sentido y creo que en esta película se destaca demasiado. Sobre todo porque en cada historia que nos cuentan, conocemos a distintos personajes que llaman mucho la atención.

Entre tantas cosas que se pueden extraer de Big Fish, otro detalle que me llamó mucho la atención es el tema del romance, siendo este bastante efímero, pero a la vez muy emotivo y a la vez divertido de ver. Lo que definitivamente hace especial esta película es que cada historia que vamos viendo de inicio a fin es parte de la vida entera de Edward Bloom. Imagínate hacer de tu vida una serie de cuentos fantásticos inimaginables que puedes llegar a contarles a los niños y a los adultos por igual. Todo el mundo desearía tener una vida así y creo que esta película nos deja esa sensación como mensaje, sobre todo a los que apenas nos falta mucho por vivir.

I'm not talking about living in a dream or daydreaming or anything like that, but rather about seeing every part of our lives as if it were a fantastic story and becoming the characters worthy of becoming the protagonists. This can have many meanings, but the main one would be to give that positive, emotional, and fantastic vision to every aspect of our lives, as if they were an important arc in our story. Both happy and sad moments are all part of the great story that is our own life. That's why everyone should see this movie, really.

Last but not least, let's talk about the audiovisual aspect of Big Fish. As expected, Tim Burton manages to maintain his high standard of quality with his southern gothic art style and direction. This includes the narration, as well as the photography styles, the static and moving shots, the bright color palettes, and the use of light and shadow. Another noteworthy detail is the use of practical visual effects that look great in this film, especially in terms of makeup, costumes, props, etc. The sound effects also stand out, but nothing compares to the soundtrack. In short, I leave you with this Tim Burton film for those who wish to see it.

Personally, I give it a rating of 9/10 in terms of the adventure, fantasy, drama, romance, and comedy genres.

No hablo de vivir en un sueño o dormir despierto ni nada de eso, sino de la forma de ver cada parte de nuestra vida como si fuera una historia fantástica y convertirnos en los personajes dignos para convertirnos en los protagonistas. Esto puede llegar a tener muchos significados, pero el principal sería darle esa visión positiva, emotiva y fantástica a cada aspecto de nuestras vidas, como si fueran un arco importante para nuestra historia. Tanto los momentos felices como los tristes, todos son parte de una gran historia que es nuestra propia vida. Es por eso que todo el mundo tiene que ver esta película, de verdad.

Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos del apartado audiovisual que tiene Big Fish. Como es de esperarse, Tim Burton consigue mantener su alto estándar de calidad con su estilo de arte gótico con sureño y su dirección. Tanto la narración como también los estilos de fotografía, los planos fijos y en movimiento, las paletas de colores brillantes y el uso de luces y sombras. Otro detalle muy destacable es el uso de efectos visuales prácticos que se ven muy bien en esta película, sobre todo en cuanto a su maquillaje, vestimentas, recursos, etc. Los efectos de sonido también se destacan muy bien, pero nada como su banda sonora. En fin, les dejo esta película de Tim Burton para los que deseen verla.

Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 9/10 en lo que respecta al género de aventura, fantasía, drama, romance y comedia.
