Child's Play (1988) | Nattosheru Review [ENG/SPA]

This is truly an unforgettable horror classic for me, even though I have a very poor memory and can hardly remember any of the movies I saw as a child. But it's probably because this film didn't scare me much at the time that I remember it so clearly. Well, compared to films like Cannibal Holocaust and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the film I'm talking about today is more of a joke or satire in comparison. But it's more because of the idea of a possessed doll as the main antagonist. It sounds like a joke now, but in the 1980s it was undoubtedly something innovative and ingenious for American cinema. No wonder horror movies with possessed dolls have become so popular since then.

However, unlike modern films such as Annabelle and M3GAN, Child's Play is a work that is based not on a spirit or AI controlling a toy, but on a serial killer. Chucky (Charles Lee Ray) is, without a doubt, one of the best-made characters in the world of slasher horror. In previous reviews, I've brought you cannibals and psychopaths, but they are no match for this monster, which, over time, has undergone an interesting and quite mind-blowing development and evolution. But what makes him truly special is his knowledge of voodoo, and that is what makes him a terrifying being. Anyone would be creeped out to see a doll stab or murder someone with a hammer in the middle of the night.

Este sí es un clásico de terror inolvidable para mí y eso que soy muy olvidadizo, no recuerdo casi nada de las películas que veía cuando era niño. Pero seguramente es por el poco miedo que esta cinta me causó en su momento que la recuerdo claramente desde entonces. Bueno, comparado con cintas como Holocausto Caníbal y The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, la película de la cual les hablo hoy es más una chiste o una sátira en comparación. Pero es más por la propia idea de un muñeco poseído como principal antagonista. Actualmente suena como un chiste, pero en la época de los años 80 sin duda que era algo innovador e ingenioso para el cine norteamericano. No me extraña que desde entonces se hayan hecho tan populares las cintas de terror con muñecos poseídos.

Sin embargo, a diferencia de cintas modernas como Anabelle y M3GAN, Child's Play es una obra que tiene como premisa, no a un espíritu o una IA controlando un juguete, sino a un asesino en serie. Chucky (Charles Lee Ray) es, sin duda alguna, uno de los personajes mejor hechos para este mundo del terror tipo slasher. Ya en anteriores reseñas les he traído a caníbales y psicópatas, pero no tienen punto de comparación con este engendro que, a lo largo del tiempo, ha tenido un desarrollo y evolución interesante y bastante alucinante. Pero lo que lo hace verdaderamente especial es su conocimiento sobre el vudú y es eso lo que lo hace un ser terrorífico. A cualquiera le da cosa ver a un muñeco apuñalar o asesinar a una persona con un martillo en medio de la noche.

And I think that both the introduction and Chucky's personality in this film make him the center of entertainment. Because there is no other way to explain everything you see in this hour-and-a-half film other than pure entertainment, whether it's the mix of suspense, mystery, and horror, or the crimes and murders that are quite scandalous or absurd. Of course, just keeping in mind the idea that, I repeat, it is a doll that is committing all these evil acts, it is absurd that no one can kill him so easily. Obviously, we forget that we are talking about a serial killer, a genius at killing in a rather surreal way, to be honest. And I think that because of the ingenuity the film demonstrates, it deserves its points in its favor, to be honest.

Another positive point about the film is that it doesn't try to scare us with lots of jump scares or tense atmospheres. While it has its suspense well added from the beginning, it becomes a life-and-death chase in the end. The plot, while very simple to follow, manages to hook anyone with the idea that the person accompanying and pursuing a six-year-old boy is not a spirit or some kind of mysterious entity, but a very dangerous serial killer. That's why, surely, many will stay to see how it ends. Obviously, today we can say that this is not the case, since from the late 1980s to the present, the Chucky franchise has undergone many changes and evolutions to become what we know today.

Y creo que tanto la introducción como la personalidad que tiene Chucky en esta película lo hace el centro del entretenimiento. Porque no hay otra manera de explicar todo lo que se puede ver en esta película de hora y media que meramente entretenimiento; ya sea por su mezcla de suspenso con misterio y terror o los crímenes y asesinatos que son bastante escandalosos o absurdos. Claro, con solo tener presente la idea de que, repito, es un muñeco el que está cometiendo todos estos actos malévolos es absurdo el hecho de que nadie consiga acabar con él de una manera tan sencilla. Obviamente, olvidamos que estamos hablando de un asesino en serie, un genio para matar de una manera bastante surrealista, la verdad. Y creo que por ese ingenio que demuestra la película, se merece sus puntos a favor, la verdad.

Otro punto positivo que tiene la película es que no busca asustarnos con tantos jumpscares o muchos ambientes cargados de tensión. Si bien tiene sus suspenso bien agregado desde el principio, este pasa a ser una persecución por la vida y la muerte al final. La trama, si bien es muy simple de seguir y todo, consigue enganchar a cualquiera con la idea de que quien acompaña y persigue a un niño de seis años no es un espíritu o una especie de ente misterioso, sino un asesino en serie muy peligroso. Es por eso que, seguramente, muchos se queden a ver cómo termina. Obviamente, al día de hoy digamos que no es el caso ya que, desde finales de los 80 hasta la actualidad, la franquicia de Chucky pasó por muchos cambios y evoluciones hasta lo que llegamos a conocer hoy.

While there are sequels that are fascinating and much more entertaining, this first installment of Chucky is, without a doubt, a work worth remembering. This pure and terrifying version of the famous evil doll is one of the best, and those who have seen it can confirm that this is the case. As someone who has seen almost all the films and even the television series based on this same story, I can assure you that this first installment—free of dark humor, easter eggs, bad jokes, and surreal or computer-generated murders—is one of the best there is. And I'm not just saying that because I'm a fan of the classic, as you can see how sincere I am with works like Halloween. It's because this classic manages to deliver on everything it promises from the beginning.

As for the cast, I have nothing to complain about, to be honest. Apart from the actor who plays the killer and then the possessed doll, he is more than excellent as the antagonist and villain. His level of obsession, cruelty, and desire to survive and kill is even admirable, to be honest. While I do have my complaints about his death, it's more like one of many details related to the script and the character of Chucky himself that I never quite understand. As for the other characters, I don't really have much to say either. I complain about the occasional incompetence or typical generic performance of every murder or persecution victim that is always present in any slasher movie that exists. But otherwise, there is nothing wrong with any of the characters.

Si bien hay secuelas que son fascinantes y muchísimo más entretenidas, esta primera entrega de Chucky es, sin duda alguna, una obra que vale la pena recordar. Esta versión pura y terrorífica del famoso muñeco diabólico es de lo mejor y los que la vieron me pueden confirmar que es así. Como alguien que ha visto casi todas las cintas y hasta la serie de televisión que sacaron de esta misma historia, les puedo asegurar de que esta primera entrega -libre de humor negro, easter eggs, chistes malos y asesinatos surrealistas o hechos por computadora- es de lo mejor que hay. Y no lo digo solo por fanatismo por lo clásico, ya que ven lo sincero que soy con obras como Halloween. Sino porque este clásico consigue cumplir con todo lo que ofrece desde el principio.

En cuanto al elenco, nada de qué quejarme, la verdad. Aparte del que interpreta al asesino y luego muñeco endiablado es más que excelente como antagonista y villano. Su nivel de obsesión, crueldad y deseo de sobrevivir y asesinar es hasta admirable, la verdad. Si bien tengo mis quejas con respecto a su muerte, es más como uno de muchos detalles relacionados al guión y el mismo personaje de Chucky que no termino nunca de entender. Con respecto a los demás personajes, tampoco tengo mucho que opinar, la verdad. Si me quejo de alguna que otra incompetencia o típica actuación genérica de toda víctima de un asesinato o persecución que siempre hay en cualquier slasher que existe. Pero de resto, no hay nada malo que tenga ningún personaje.

I suppose that, as this is the first installment in a long series of films and sequels in which each main character has been extended, transformed, and exploited, it is normal for me to have an inconclusive opinion of the characters as such. From little Andy to the officer in charge of Charles Lee Ray's case, there is very little to say about this film, really. On the other hand, the theme of voodoo and all that really catches my attention because, at first glance, it seems like a way for the creator and writer of this movie to make Chucky a being capable of living even after being killed in the flesh. While there are obviously things I don't know about this subject, I admit that the way they showed us this in the movie is mind-blowing.

Last but not least is the audiovisual aspect of this film. I must admit that Chucky's design and appearance are simply perfect for what is sought in the first place: a toy that appears to be innocent but ultimately hides a rather terrifying face and being. The use of practical effects, animatronics, explosions, makeup, moving photography styles, and camera angles is excellent. Despite its age, the film has aged very well for a story about a doll that moves on its own. The sound effects are also excellent, as they greatly enhance the atmosphere of many scenes. The same goes for the soundtrack, which is also unforgettable. In short, this is a classic and quite entertaining horror film.

Personally, I give it a rating of 8/10 in terms of the supernatural horror genre.

Supongo que, al ser la primera entrega de una larga serie de películas y secuelas donde han alargado, transformado y explotado a cada personaje principal es normal que tenga una opinión inconclusa de los personajes como tal. Desde el pequeño Andy hasta el oficial a cargo del caso de Charles Lee Ray hay muy poco que contar en lo que se refiere a esta película en realidad. Por otro lado, el tema del vudú y todo eso me llama la atención de forma especial ya que, a simple vista, parece como una forma que tuvo el creador y escritor de esta película de hacer de Chucky un ser capaz de vivir incluso después de ser asesinado en carne propia. Si bien hay cosas que desconozco obviamente de este tema, admito que la forma en la que nos mostraron esto en la película es hasta alucinante.

Por último, pero no menos importante, está el apartado audiovisual de esta película. Desde ya debo admitir que el diseño y aspecto de Chucky es simplemente perfecto para lo que se busca en un principio. Un juguete que aparenta ser inocente, pero que al final oculta un rostro y un ser bastante aterrador. El uso de efectos prácticos, animatrónicos, explosiones, maquillajes, estilos de fotografías en movimiento y enfoques son excelentes. A pesar de las décadas que tiene, la película ha logrado envejecer muy bien para tratarse de la historia de un muñeco que se mueve solo. Los efectos de sonido también son excelentes ya que ayudan mucho al ambiente de muchas escenas. Lo mismo sucede con la banda sonora, la cual es inolvidable también. En fin, esta es una película de terror clásica y bastante entretenida.

Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 8/10 en lo que respecta al género del terror sobrenatural.
