This is one of those movies that I've seen a little more than once on TV and that I barely remember because of how different it seemed to me, compared to other movies of the science fiction genre. And it's not surprising that this is the case since, apart from how unpopular and commercial this film was, its plot and story didn't really impress me that much at the time. Recently I gave it another chance to watch it again, so now I can understand its message a little bit. I will tell you right now that it is not a film that I would recommend to everyone, as it is clearly not made for all audiences. It has its sensitive themes, as well as the occasional explicit scene, but I say that more because of its dark and introspective tone. However, if you are older and are looking for something different and much further away from what is common to see in this genre, then this film may be what you are looking for. By this I'm not saying it's a bad movie either, but it's obviously not the best as far as the robot theme goes, at least not for me.

Esta es de esas películas que he visto poco más de una vez en la televisión y que apenas recuerdo por lo diferente que me pareció, en comparación con otras películas del género de ciencia ficción. Starting with the story, let's recap what was mentioned above regarding our young protagonist named Caleb Smith and his new job of testing whether Ava, a super advanced android, is capable of thinking and reasoning as a human being would by means of a week-long test. In this research center we can perceive a tension that, throughout the film, will be condensed until its expected ending. More specifically I mention it because of the way Caleb treats Ava and he begins to evaluate her responses and behaviors with Nathan who for his part is looking for results that are a bit more specific and abstract than what anyone would normally expect from this research. But what our protagonist does not know is that the true intention of his boss and now co-worker is totally different from what he knows and that, when he learns all the secrets behind this revolutionary research, his way of seeing this genius will change completely. Is Ava capable of thinking and reasoning like a human being or is she just doing it as a way to imitate and replicate perfectly and accurately such behavior to achieve something specific?

Personally I will say that I don't trust movies with casts of actors unknown to me because I have no reference or recollection of their previous work. However, both the reputation and popular opinion out there regarding this supposed hidden gem of sci-fi cinema motivated me to give it this chance. And I won't deny that they do an excellent job, but nothing compared to what the director achieves with this particular story. As a quick summary opinion of what I thought I saw in this feature film, it's as if the classic and popular Frankenstein story had been replicated, renewed and changed in genre to make this an introspective and very interesting film to watch. I can explain this in more detail below, but for now I just want to say that in terms of story it is excellent as it manages to perfectly focus all our attention to this building with few members and an experiment in which it is tested how far artificial intelligence can go to mimic the human being. We can also notice certain patterns in human behavior, which demonstrate the darkest and most personal thoughts and desires.

Empezando con la historia, recapitulemos lo mencionado arriba con respecto a nuestro joven protagonista llamado Caleb Smith y su nuevo trabajo de probar si Ava, un androide super avanzado, es capaz de pensar y razonar como lo haría un ser humano mediante un test durante una semana. En este centro de investigación se puede percibir una tensión que, a lo largo de la película, se irá condensando hasta su esperado final. Más en específico lo menciono por la manera en la que Caleb trata a Ava y este empieza a evaluar sus respuestas y conductas con Nathan quien por su parte busca resultados un tanto más específicos y abstractos a lo que normalmente esperaría cualquiera de esta investigación. Pero lo que nuestro protagonista no sabe es que la verdadera intención de su jefe y ahora compañero de trabajo es otra totalmente diferente a lo que sabe y que, al momento de enterarse de todos los secretos que hay detrás de esta revolucionaria investigación, su forma de ver a este genio cambiará por completo. ¿Será que Ava es capaz de pensar y razonar como un ser humano o solo lo hace como una forma de imitar y replicar de forma perfecta y precisa dicha conducta para conseguir algo en específico?

En lo personal diré que no confío mucho en películas con elencos de actores desconocidos para mí debido a que no tengo ninguna referencia o recuerdo de sus trabajos anteriores. Sin embargo, tanto la reputación como la opinión popular que hay respecto a esta supuesta joya escondida del cine de ciencia ficción me motivó a darle esta oportunidad. Y no voy a negar que hacen un excelente trabajo, pero nada comparado a lo que el director logra con esta historia tan particular. Como una opinión resumida y rápida de lo que pensé que ví en este largometraje diré que es como si la clásica y popular historia de Frankenstein se hubiera replicado, renovado y cambiado de género para hacer de esta una obra cinematográfica introspectiva y muy interesante de ver. Esto lo puedo ir explicando más a detalle a continuación, pero por el momento solo quiero decir que en cuanto a historia es excelente ya que logra centrar perfectamente toda nuestra atención a esta edificación con pocos miembros y un experimento en el cual se prueba hasta dónde puede llegar la inteligencia artificial a imitar al ser humano. También podemos notar ciertos patrones en la conducta humana, los cuales demuestran los más oscuros y personales pensamientos y deseos.

Starting with the main character, who can serve as an outsider spectator to everything that is happening in this isolated place, but who in the end ends up involved in what seems to be the consequences of a genius trying to "play God". Caleb could be anyone watching this film, as his impressions and reactions could very well be what anyone would do in certain cases. There's also his knowledge of artificial intelligence, science and programming which, along with his skills don't do him much good in the end, only to recognize what's been going on since the beginning. Nathan, on the other hand, is the mad genius, the Victor Frankenstein who, being aware of the advances in technology and computer science, saw in AI a future that would completely revolutionize the world. With this he created an android, a robot with intelligence advanced enough to be aware of itself, of its own existence and thus think and act as a human being would. This is where Ava comes in, who is a being that impresses us from the beginning with the way she talks and responds, as if she really could be capable of feeling human emotions.

Another thing I really like about this movie is the way they mix very well the psychological suspense with this whole theme of thinking robots capable of imitating the human mind. The way in which aesthetically the enclosed rooms and corridors manage to generate a claustrophobic feeling, the different dialogues that Caleb has with Nathan that make us think about what Ava has secretly answered to the protagonist in his daily sessions and the eccentric and explosive behavior of the creator of this intelligence is what makes us think and feel that something is wrong throughout the film. I am very struck by how they try to convey certain messages in this whole story of intelligent robots locked up and being deprived of their freedom to be studied. The way Nathan treats these machines and how he tries to find something perfect, something that is as close as possible to a human being makes us think about how disturbed this character can be. This is further accentuated throughout the film as we get to know his tastes and deeper opinions on the subject.

Empezando por el protagonista, quien puede servir como un espectador externo a todo lo que está ocurriendo en este aislado lugar, pero que al final termina envuelto en lo que parece ser las consecuencias de un genio intentando “jugar a ser Dios”. Otra cosa que me gusta mucho de esta película es la forma en la que mezclan muy bien el suspenso psicológico con todo este tema de robots pensantes y capaces de imitar la mente humana. La forma en la que estéticamente las habitaciones y los pasillos encerrados consiguen generar una sensación claustrofóbica, los diferentes diálogos que tienen Caleb con Nathan que nos hacen pensar en lo que Ava le ha respondido en secreto al protagonista en sus sesiones diarias y la conducta excéntrica y explosiva que tiene el creador de dicha inteligencia es lo que nos hacen pensar y sentir que algo anda mal durante toda la cinta. Me llama mucho la atención cómo intentan transmitir ciertos mensajes en toda esta historia de robots inteligentes encerrados y siendo privados de libertad para ser estudiados. La manera en la que Nathan trata a estas máquinas y cómo intenta buscar algo perfecto, algo que sea lo más cercano posible a un ser humano nos pone a pensar en lo trastornado puede llegar a estar este personaje. But on the other hand I consider that in general the film leaves several issues or questions unanswered or unclear. I say this because of its ending, a somewhat predictable and at the same time a bit disappointing, at least for me. While it has a plot twist that you do not expect, in the end this only detracts from what was intended to prove and discover from the very beginning with this android capable of thinking and acting like a human being. Perhaps and said ending is just to let the same viewer come to draw their own conclusion of the same, but this for me does not end up convincing me but complete, the truth. I do not deny that visually and aesthetically is very well done, but I think a good movie deserves a good ending, or at least one that can get to better close a story like this. I guess the final message is that it is possible for a robot to reach to become something similar to a conscious human being, I don't know.

Last but not least, let's talk about the visual and technical section this movie has. This being the best it has to offer (so much so that it even won an Oscar for "Best Visual Effects"), it's no wonder that I talk in detail about the level of quality and visual aesthetics that this film possesses. From the style of photography and neutral color palette to the detailed use of visual effects in the design of the androids, this film has a very high level of quality for only having used 15 million dollars to produce it. Of course, both the plot and the rhythm of the story help to focus more on embellishing the few moments in which such compositions can be seen, while the rest of the film focuses more on setting the scenes in order to generate the desired tension. The use of lights, color changes and shadows help a lot in this, as do the designs of the rooms and corridors. The soundtrack also helps a lot to generate suspense to the film with slow background melodies or simple sounds to contrast the scenes with little action and movements. In short, this is a film made for a certain type of person looking for something different and introspective in the science fiction genre.

Personally, I give it a rating of 8/10 as far as the sci-fi/suspense genre is concerned.

Por un lado me gusta que demuestren lo más realista y humano que puede llegar a ser un genio que se intenta endiosar a sí mismo, pero que termina de la peor y más predecible forma en la que uno se puede imaginar. Pero por otro lado considero que en general la película deja varios temas o preguntas sin responder ni aclarar. Esto lo digo por su final, un final un tanto predecible y a la vez un poco decepcionante, al menos para mí. Si bien tiene un giro de trama que no te lo esperas, al final esto solo le resta importancia a lo que se intentó probar y descubrir desde un mismo principio con este androide capaz de pensar y actuar como un ser humano. Tal vez y dicho final sea así solo para dejar que el mismo espectador llegue a sacar su propia conclusión de la misma, pero esto para mí no me termina de convencer pero completo, la verdad. No niego que visual y estéticamente está muy bien hecho, pero considero que una buena película merece de un buen final, o al menos de uno que pueda llegar a cerrar mejor una historia como esta. Supongo que el mensaje final es que es posible que un robot llegue a alcanzar convertirse en algo similar a un ser humano consciente, no sé.

Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos del apartado visual y técnico que tiene esta película. Siendo esto lo mejor que tiene para ofrecer (tanto así que hasta se ganó un premio Óscar a “Mejores Efectos Visuales”), no es de extrañar que les hable en detalle el nivel de calidad y estética visual que posee esta cinta. Desde el estilo de fotografía y paleta de colores neutros hasta el uso detallado de los efectos visuales en el diseño de los androides, esta película posee un nivel de calidad muy alto para solo haberse usado 15 millones de dólares para producirla. Claro, tanto la trama como el ritmo que posee la historia ayuda a centrarse más en embellecer los pocos momentos en los que se pueden ver dichas composiciones, mientras que el resto de la misma se centra más en ambientar los escenarios con el objetivo de generar esa tensión que se busca. El uso de las luces, los cambios de colores y las sombras ayudan mucho en esto, al igual que lo hacen los diseños de los cuartos y los pasillos. La banda sonora también ayuda mucho a generar dicho suspenso a la cinta con melodías de fondo lentas o simples sonidos para contrastar las escenas con poca acción y movimientos. En resumen, esta es una película hecha para cierto tipo de personas que buscan algo diferente e introspectivo en el género de la ciencia ficción.

Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 8/10 en lo que respecta al género de la ciencia ficción y el suspenso.
