Here we are, on Friday, October 17, talking about a horror movie called Friday the 13th. It would have been even more amazing if it had coincided with the date, but oh well. Also, by the time you read this post, it will probably no longer be Friday but Saturday or Sunday, but hey, at least we tried. Before I start giving you my honest opinion about this classic 80s slasher movie, I want to mention that I first learned about this franchise thanks to the crossover movie they made back in the 2000s called Freddy vs. Jason. Aside from the guy with scissor hands, the guy with the hockey mask intrigued me too much. I also remember seeing some of the sequels, but never this movie that I'm bringing you tonight.

Friday the 13th can be considered one of the main films that were inspired (or rather, indirectly plagiarized) by Halloween. John Carpenter's film, which completely defined an entire horror subgenre, namely slasher, had such an impact and was so successful at the time that everyone wanted their own version of it. That's how Sean S. Cunningham came to produce and direct this film with a script he found somewhere and liked, don't ask me why, honestly. Broadly speaking, this film is literally a blatant copy of Halloween, the only difference being the main antagonist that everyone now knows thanks to its sequels, which are better made than this particular film.

Aquí estamos, un viernes 17 de octubre hablando de una película de terror llamada Viernes 13. Hubiera sido más alucinante si hubiera coincidido con el número del día también, pero bueno. También que, seguramente, cuando leas este post ya no sea viernes sino sábado o domingo, pero bueno, se hizo el intento. Antes de empezar a darles mi más sincera opinión acerca de este clásico slasher de los 80s, quiero mencionar que conocí esta franquicia gracias a la película crossover que hicieron por allá en los 2000 titulada Freddy vs Jason. Aparte del tipo con manos de tijera, el tipo con máscara de hockey me intrigó demasiado. Recuerdo también haber visto ciertas secuelas, pero nunca esta película que les traigo en la noche de hoy.

Viernes 13 puede considerarse como una de las principales películas que nacieron por inspiración (o plagio indirecto, mejor dicho) de Halloween. La cinta de John Carpenter que definió por completo todo un subgénero del terror como lo es el slasher causó tanto impacto y generó un éxito tal en su momento que todos querían su propia versión de dicha obra. Es así como Sean S. Cunningham llegó a producir y dirigir esta película con un guión que encontró por ahí y que le gustó, no me pregunten por qué, la verdad. A grandes rasgos, esta película es literalmente una copia descarada de Halloween, siendo la única diferencia el antagonista principal que todo el mundo conoce ahora gracias a sus secuelas mejores hechas que esta cinta en particular.

Like everyone else who knew nothing about the subject, I went to bed last night expecting to see the first appearance of Cunningham's version of Michael Myers. But what was revealed in the third act, right at the end, was a total disappointment, with chase sequences that were quite exasperating for my taste. My disappointment was such that I definitely decided to classify it as the worst slasher horror movie I've seen so far. I'm not exaggerating; from its absurdly constructed plot to the enormous amount of clichés and bad jokes, it's crazy. Not to mention the horrible performances by all the cast members, including the antagonist (I won't give any spoilers for those who are interested in seeing it, although I don't recommend it).

Seriously, I was expecting to see the guy in the hockey mask tearing apart and killing horny, half-naked teenagers at camp, only to end up with this piece of trash... a huge disappointment. I'm not complaining that they were inspired by Halloween, as the story has its changes and details that make it unique in its style, such as the Crystal Lake camp theme, Jason's death, and the fact that everything always happens on Friday the 13th. What I didn't like was that, in the end, everything that happened and the murders were committed by a mentally ill person who clearly doesn't even have the strength to use a machete properly.

Yo, cómo todo ignorante del tema, me acosté a ver esta película anoche esperando ver la primera aparición de la copia de Michale Myers que hizo Cunningham. Pero fue una total decepción lo que se reveló en su tercer acto, justo al final, con unas secuencias de persecuciones bastante exasperantes para mi gusto. Mi decepción fue tal que, definitivamente, decidí catalogarla como la peor película de terror tipo slasher que he visto hasta ahora. No exagero, desde su trama absurdamente hecha y la cantidad enorme de clichés y chistes malos que tiene es una locura. Eso sin mencionar las horribles actuaciones de todos los miembros del elenco, incluyendo el/la antagonista (noles daré spoilers para los que estén interesados en verla, aunque no se los recomiendo).

De verdad, yo esperando ver al tipo de la máscara de hockey despedazando y matando a jóvenes calenturientos y semidesnudos en el campamento para que al final me salieran con esta basura que es… una decepción enorme. No me quejo que se hayan inspirado en Halloween, ya que la historia tiene sus cambios y detalles que la hacen única en su estilo; como lo es el tema del campamento Crystal Lake, la muerte de Jason y que todo suceda siempre un Viernes 13. Lo que no me gustó fue que, al final, todo lo que sucedió y los asesinatos causados fueran hechos por una persona con problemas mentales que, evidentemente, no tiene ni las fuerzas para utilizar bien un machete.

I don't know who the hell came up with this script or who wrote this story, but what they did is utter garbage, really. And what's most infuriating is how they leave things at the end as if it were something "supernatural", a piece of trash at the end. They focused more on showing young people playing, having sex, and getting naked while drinking and smoking than on showing us an antagonist who actually causes fear just by looking at him. Obviously, I understand that they did all this as a kind of subliminal message about how dangerous it is to have sex and get drunk when you're young. Those were different times, I know, and I know that most slasher movies have similar stories in many ways. Also, no matter what the killer looks like, it's always going to be the same old scares.

But what doesn't convince me is that, after so many messages, so many hints, and so many clues about who the killer might be, they end up showing me a random person who talks to herself, is cringe-worthy, and looks crazy. The most unfortunate thing is the young woman who survives in the end. I don't know how the hell she did it, because she's completely useless. Of all the opportunities she had to kill the killer and end it all, it seems like she just played dumb to make the movie a little longer and fill out the hour and a half runtime. Seriously, what a piece of trash of a feature film. The worst part is how successful it was at the time (even though it didn't do well with critics). Well, at least thanks to that, we finally got to see the famous Jason in person in the sequels that came out.

No sé quién rayos inventó este guión o quién escribió esta historia, pero menuda basura es lo que hizo, de verdad. Y lo que más rabia da es cómo dejan las cosas justo al final como si fuera algo “sobrenatural”, una basura al final. Se centraron más en mostrar a jóvenes jugando, teniendo sexo y desnudándose mientras beben y fuman que en mostrarnos a un antagonista que sí cause miedo con solo verlo. Obviamente, entiendo que todo esto lo hicieron como una especie de mensaje subliminal de lo peligroso que es tener sexo y emborracharse desde jóvenes en aquel entonces. Eran otros tiempos, lo sé, sé que la mayoría de slashers tienen este tipo de historias similares en muchos aspectos. También que, no importa cómo se vea el asesino, siempre serán los mismos sustos malos de siempre.

Pero lo que no me convence es que, después de tantos mensajes, tantas indirectas y tantas señales de quién posiblemente sea el asesino; me terminan mostrando a una persona random que habla sola, da cringe y que tiene cara de loca. Lo más lamentable es la joven que sobrevive al final, no sé cómo rayos, porque sí que es una completa inútil. De tantas oportunidades que tuvo de matar al asesino y acabar con todo, pareciera que se hiciera la estúpida nomás para alargar un poco más la película y así completar la hora y media de duración. De verdad, qué basura de largometraje. Lo peor de todo es lo exitosa que fue en su momento (aunque no le fue nada bien con la crítica). Bueno, al menos gracias a eso tuvimos el placer de ver, al fin, al famoso Jason en persona en las secuelas que sacaron.

Despite everything, I won't deny that there was at least one scene, but only one, that really impacted me, and that's the one that happens just before the final scene. I think the director gets it right thanks to the setting, the calmness of the moment, and the loud background soundtrack, and then... BAM! Into the water. That's where the movie should have ended, really. I would have given it a few points if they hadn't added that extra minute of cringe-worthy final scene after such a well-done jump scare, okay. But hey, nothing is perfect in this life. I also admit that, from the beginning, there were clear signs that the antagonist was someone familiar and not scary to look at, so I'm inclined to think that the movie isn't all bad, just most of it.

Last but not least, let's talk about the audiovisual aspect of this film. With a low budget, as expected for an independent film, it's normal to see a fairly simple level of quality. The photography isn't bad, especially with the moving camera styles used in chase or stalking scenes (copied from John Carpenter's Halloween, of course). There's also the issue of lighting, which, in many scenes, I think is too bright for nighttime when only a candle or lamp is being used. The opposite is also true in scenes with almost no lighting, where you can't even see the surroundings. The sound effects are decent, at least. But the soundtrack is the only noteworthy thing about all this, as it does catch your attention. Anyway, this is the Halloween rip-off that I definitely don't recommend watching.

Personally, I give it a rating of 6/10 in terms of the horror and suspense genre.

A pesar de todo, no voy a negar que hubo al menos una escena, pero solo una, que sí me impactó mucho y es la que ocurre justo antes de la escena final, final. Creo que el director logra atinarle gracias al tema de la ambientación, la calma del momento y la banda sonora de fondo a todo volumen para luego… ¡POM! Al agua. Ahí debió de haber terminado la película, de verdad. Le hubiera dado unos puntos si no hubieran agregado ese minuto extra de escena final tan cringe después de tremendo jumpscare bien hecho, vale. Pero bueno, nada es perfecto en esta vida. También admito que, desde el principio, había señales claras de que el antagonista era alguien conocido y que no causaba miedo a la vista, así que ahí sí me inclino un poquito a que no es del todo mala la película, solo la mayoría.

Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos del apartado audiovisual de esta película. Con un bajo presupuesto, esperado para una cinta independiente, es normal ver un nivel de calidad bastante simple. La fotografía no está mal, sobre todo con los estilos de cámaras en movimiento tipo persecuciones o acechos (copiados de Halloween de John Carpenter, claro). También está el tema de la iluminación que, para muchas escenas, pienso que se ven bastante iluminadas para ser de noche y solo usar una vela o lámpara. Lo mismo sucede al contrario con escenas con casi nula iluminación que no se aprecia siquiera el entorno. Los efectos de sonido son decentes, por lo menos. Pero la banda sonora es lo único destacable de todo esto ya que sí llama la atención. En fin, esta es la copia de Halloween que, definitivamente, no les recomiendo ver.

Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 6/10 en lo que respecta al género del terror y el suspenso.
