Fun with Dick and Jane (2005) | Nattosheru Review [ENG/SPA]

When talking about Jim Carrey films, a variety of titles come to mind, but many people overlook Fun with Dick and Jane. Whether it's because they didn't like it or simply weren't interested in its plot and style of humour, this film didn't appeal to many fans. Personally, I don't understand what was so bad about this particular film, apart from having a plot and themes that may not appeal to or interest the majority. If it entertained me so much when I was a child, I doubt that an adult with a job and a family wouldn't find everything it has to offer funny.

I understand that the last thing people choose to watch when they go to the cinema is something related to the economic situation of an american family, even if it is a comedy. Normally, these types of stories about bankrupt companies, financial problems, and billionaires are more suited to other genres. That's why many people may not have enjoyed watching this comedy, even with Jim Carrey in the lead role. But as someone who has no knowledge of economics and such, I can personally tell you that it's quite entertaining.

Cuando se habla de películas de Jim Carrey, se nos puede ocurrir cierta variedad de títulos, pero a mucha gente se le pasa por alto mencionar Fun with Dick and Jane. Ya sea porque no les gustó o porque simplemente no les interesó su trama y estilo de humor, esta cinta no llegó a ser del agrado de muchos fanáticos. En lo personal no entiendo qué fue lo malo que le vieron a esta cinta en particular, aparte de tener una trama y temas que pueden no llegar a gustar o interesar a la mayoría. Si a mí me entretuvo tanto cuando era pequeño, dudo que para un adulto con empleo y familia no le dé risa todo lo que tiene para ofrecernos.

Entiendo que lo último que llega a elegir la gente al momento de ver una película es algo relacionado a la situación económica de una familia estadounidense, aún si tiene comedia. Normalmente este tipo de historias donde hablan de empresas en quiebras, problemas financieros y multimillonarios son más para otro tipos de géneros. Es por eso que tal vez a muchos no les terminó de agradar ver esta película de humor aún teniendo a Jim Carrey como protagonista. Pero como alguien que no tiene ningún conocimiento sobre economía y cosas por el estilo, personalmente les puedo decir que es bastante entretenida.

Starting with the way the Harper family is introduced to us and how they spend their days pretending to be an upper-middle-class american family. We also see the rise and then sudden fall of their economic situation after Globodyne declares bankruptcy. Without a job, Dick Harper decides to take his time looking for work as a vice-president at other competing companies. As the months go by, we see how their financial situation worsens, with their electricity, utilities and credit being cut off and them falling into debt, even with the bank.

After so much bad news, and seeing how their situation is becoming increasingly critical, they have no choice but to resort to illegal methods to avoid ending up on the street. It is fascinating to see the decline and development of the lives of our protagonists, who do everything they can to survive and support themselves financially in a country like the United States. We can learn how things work in terms of job hunting, methods of earning money, and illegal activities. Being in a complete crisis, it is funny to see how the Harper family gets out of the hole they find themselves in, literally.

Empezando por la forma en la que nos presentan a la familia Harper y cómo son sus días simulando ser una familia estadounidense de clase media-alta. Podemos ver también la subida y luego la repentina caída de su situación económica luego de que la empresa Globodyne se declarase en bancarrota. Sin trabajo, Dick Harmer decide tomarse su tiempo buscando empleos con su puesto como vicepresidente en otras empresas competidoras. Al paso de los meses vemos cómo su situación económica empeora, quitándoles la electricidad, los servicios, los créditos y quedándose en deuda incluso con el banco.

Luego de tantas malas noticias, además de ver cómo su situación es cada vez más crítica, no les queda otra opción que recurrir a métodos poco legales para no terminar en la calle. Es fascinante ver todo este declive y desarrollo de la vida de nuestros protagonistas quienes hacen de todo para poder sobrevivir y mantenerse económicamente en un país como lo es Estados Unidos. Podemos aprender cómo funcionan las cosas en cuanto a búsqueda de trabajos, métodos para ganar dinero y actos poco legales se refiere. Al estar en una completa crisis, es gracioso cómo vemos a la familia Harper salir del pozo en el que se encuentran, literalmente.

I think this film does a good job of mixing humour with these financial and legal issues. Set in the country where 'all your dreams come true', it is clearly striking to see an american family go through such difficulties just to live decently after losing everything. But the best part of all this is seeing how the Harper family's morals are distorted due to the many pressures and needs they face. That thought of "why is this happening to me? What did I do wrong to deserve this?" generates enormous concern.

And we see this reflected in the couple Dick and Jane when they realise they have no choice but to find any way to get what they need, even if it means using force. Of course, being a comedy film, we see all this with the humorous tone that characterises Jim Carrey. Despite this, it maintains a serious tone at certain key moments where the tension of reality and the problems that befall them cause them to make risky decisions. We see a Jim Carrey who is not as crazy or expressive as we are used to seeing in previous films, but he is still very funny.

Considero que esta película no lo hace mal al momento de mezclar el humor con estos temas financieros y legales. Al situarnos en el país donde “todos tus sueños se hacen realidad”, es evidente que llame mucho la atención ver a una familia americana pasar por tales dificultades para al menos vivir de forma decente, luego de perderlo todo. Pero lo mejor de todo esto es ver cómo la moral de la familia Harper se tergiversa debido a tantas presiones y necesidades que viven. Ese pensamiento de “¿por qué me pasa todo esto a mí? ¿Qué fue lo que hice mal para merecer esto?” genera una preocupación enorme.

Y esto lo vemos reflejado en la pareja Dick y Jane al ver que no tienen más remedio que buscar cualquier forma de conseguir lo que necesitan, aunque sea a la fuerza. Claro, al ser una película de comedia vemos todo esto con ese tono humorístico que caracteriza bastante a Jim Carrey. A pesar de eso, mantiene un tono de seriedad en ciertos momentos clave donde la tensión de la realidad y los problemas que les sobrevienen los hacen tomar decisiones arriesgadas. Podemos ver a un Jim Carrey no tan loco ni expresivo como ya estamos acostumbrados ver en cintas anteriores, pero aún así da mucha risa.

Watching an american family like the one in this film is one of the most entertaining things I've seen since I was a child (after The Simpsons, of course). The number of funny moments, jokes, references, and dialogues we see here not only makes us laugh, but also makes us think a little about the irony of life in the United States. For a film from two decades ago, it is not far from reflecting what we see in the real world. Crises like the one we see in this film have also been seen in the news, and it is not a pleasant experience.

Personally, as I grew up in a moderately poor place, I will never know what it is like to be "up to the neck in debt" and not have enough to eat or bathe with a small shower or sprinkler. Of course, like every latin-american, I have experienced hardship, especially when living abroad, so I have some idea of what it is like to live through something similar. But nothing compared to what we see in this film. We can take this story as if it were a well-told joke, but it is actually inspired by reality.

Ver a una familia americana como la de esta película es de lo más entretenido que he visto desde pequeño (luego de Los Simpsons, claro). La cantidad de momentos graciosos, chistes, referencias y diálogos que vemos aquí no solo nos saca una risa, sino que también nos pone a pensar un poco sobre la ironía de la vida en Estados Unidos. Para ser una cinta de hace dos décadas atrás no está muy lejos de reflejar lo que podemos ver en el mundo real. Casos de crisis como lo que vemos en esta cinta se han visto también en las noticias y no es una experiencia bonita.

En lo personal, como crecí en un lugar medianamente pobre nunca sabré lo que es estar “hasta el cuello en deudas” y que no tenga ni para comer o bañarse con una pequeña regadera o un aspersor. Claro, como todo latinoamericano que soy he pasado penurias, sobre todo al momento de vivir en el extranjero, así que tengo cierta noción de cómo es vivir algo parecido. Pero nada comparado con lo que se ve en esta película. Podemos tomarnos esta historia como si fuera un chiste bien contado, pero la misma está inspirada en la realidad incluso.

This is not surprising when we consider the number of times the United States has been in crisis throughout history. But what we see in this film is something else entirely. Apart from everything our protagonists suffer, we can also notice certain details about their story and how the world sometimes works. To say that in real life there are people like Jack McCallister who have so much money in their pockets that they don't care about selling almost all the shares of their most valuable company on the market and leaving it bankrupt and thousands of employees out of work is saying a lot.

But the way this film portrays him is completely crazy, and it is understandable that he is the source of all the problems our protagonists suffer. Jack can clearly be seen as the main antagonist of this story because of everything he does. But as if that weren't enough, his behaviour and speech generate even more hatred and contempt from everyone who watches this film. Honestly, if you look at everything he does and says from beginning to end, it makes you wish for his death or something worse. To think that there are billionaires like Jack in the real world is crazy.

No es de extrañar esto al conocer las veces en las que Estados Unidos ha quedado en crisis a lo largo de la historia. Pero lo que se ve en esta película ya es otra cosa. Aparte de todo lo que vemos que padecen nuestros protagonistas, también podemos notar ciertos detalles en cuanto a su historia y a cómo funciona a veces este mundo. Decir que en la vida real existe gente como Jack McCallister que tienen tanto dinero en sus bolsillos que les da igual vender casi todas las acciones de su empresa mejor valorada en el mercado y dejarla en quiebra y con miles de empleados sin trabajo es decir mucho.

Pero la forma en la que nos lo pinta esta película es una completa locura y es entendible que sea la fuente de todos los problemas que padecen nuestros protagonistas. Se puede ver a Jack claramente como el antagonista principal de esta historia debido a todo lo que hace. Pero por si no fuera suficiente, su forma de actuar y hablar genera más odio y desprecio por parte de todos los que vemos esta película. De verdad, si nos fijamos en todo lo que hace y dice desde el principio hasta el final es como para desearle la muerte o algo peor. Pensar que hay multimillonarios así como Jack en el mundo real es una locura.

At this point, I would like to talk about the third and final act of this film, which many criticise for having a supposedly abrupt plot twist and focusing everything on Jack McCallister and all that. Personally, I liked it, yes, but that's just me. I honestly think that the strategy they use to steal here and get away with it despite everything they are going through at that moment is crazy. But in the end, it's so much fun to watch that it doesn't matter whether it makes sense or not. With this, we see a decent, albeit somewhat absurd, conclusion to the whole story.

But anyway, we've talked a lot about the story itself, now it's time to talk about the characters. We start with Dick Harper who, being played by Jim Carrey, is hard not to grow fond of. Despite his antics and craziness, he is an ambitious and sensitive person who always wants the best for his family. Then we have Jane, played by Téa Leoni, who I think did an excellent job as Dick's partner and companion. Together, they give us some of the best moments in this film. Finally, we have Jack McCallister, who, well, I've already said everything I think about him above.

En este punto quisiera hablarles del tercer y último acto de esta película, la cual muchos critican por tener un giro supuestamente abrupto de su trama y centrar todo en Jack McCallister y todo eso. A mí en lo personal me gustó, si, pero ya eso es cosa mía nomás. Sinceramente pienso que la estrategia que utilizan para robar aquí y salirse con la suya a pesar de todo lo que viven en ese instante es una locura. Pero al final es tan divertido ver todo esto que da igual si tiene sentido o no. Con esto vemos un cierre decente, aunque un tanto absurdo de toda la historia.

Pero bueno, ya hablamos mucho de la historia como tal, ahora toca hablar de los personajes. Empezamos con Dick Harper quien, al ser interpretado por Jim Carrey, es difícil no encariñarse con él. A pesar de sus ocurrencias y locuras, es una persona con ambición y sentimientos que busca siempre lo mejor para su familia. Luego tenemos a Jane quien es interpretada por Téa Leoni y que considero hizo un excelente trabajo como la pareja y compañera de Dick. Ambos nos dan varios de los mejores momentos de esta película. Por último tenemos a Jack McCallister que, bueno, ya dije todo lo que opino de él arriba.

Last but not least, let's talk about the audiovisual aspect of Fun with Dick and Jane. For a film directed by someone I don't know, I think it's excellent, although this seems to be more down to the producer, who has worked with Jim Carrey on previous films. The combination of photography with well-crafted sets and static shots is top notch. We see a lot of tracking shots throughout the film, which gives it a dynamic feel, as well as a varied colour palette.

The details in terms of locations, visual effects, resources, and costumes also help a lot. From start to finish, we can see a clear transformation in the Harper family's economic situation just by looking at their clothes, their car, and their house. What surprises me is that they needed so many millions for a film that's only an hour and a half long, but oh well. The sound effects aren't bad either; they even help to complete many funny scenes. The same goes for the soundtrack, which is one of my favourites, especially for a few particular scenes. Anyway, here's another Jim Carrey film for those of you who are interested.

Personally, I give it a rating of 8.5/10 in terms of the comedy genre.

Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos ahora del apartado audiovisual que tiene Fun with Dick and Jane. Para estar dirigida por alguien que no conozco, considero que es una excelente película, aunque parece que se debe más al productor que ha trabajado ya con Jim Carrey en cintas anteriores. Su mezcla de fotografía con escenarios bien elaborados y planos fijos son de lo mejor. Vemos mucho el estilo de seguimiento de cámara a lo largo de la cinta lo cual le da dinamismo a la misma, además de tener una paleta de colores bien variada.

Los detalles en cuanto a los lugares, los efectos visuales, recursos y vestimenta también ayudan bastante. De inicio a fin podemos notar una clara transformación de la situación económica de los Harper con solo ver sus ropas, su auto y su casa. Lo que me extraña es que hayan requerido de tantos millones para una película de hora y media de duración como esta, pero bueno. Los efectos de sonido tampoco están mal, incluso ayudan a completar muchas escenas graciosas. Lo mismo sucede con la banda sonora que es de mis favoritas, sobre todo por una que otra escena en especial. En fin, aquí les dejo otra película más de Jim Carrey por si les interesa.

Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 8.5/10 en lo que respecta al género de la comedia.
