The film begins at a country house in England, where one night we see an elderly man in a robe, top hat and long white beard approaching the house whilst using a device to absorb the light from the street lamps. Suddenly, a cat appears amongst the trees, which immediately transforms into a woman, dressed in a similar manner to our elderly friend. She calls him Albus Dumbledore, and he calls her Professor McGonagall. The two are talking when, suddenly, a giant man appears on a flying motorbike. He lands and brings with him a baby, whom they leave with a ‘Muggle family’ – the professor’s way of referring to the Dursley family.

La película inicia en una residencia rural de Inglaterra, donde una noche vemos a un hombre de tercera edad con túnica, sombrero de punta y una barba blanca y larga acercarse al lugar mientras utiliza un aparato para absorber la luz de las linternas de la calle. De repente, aparece un gato entre los árboles que, acto seguido, se convierte en una mujer, con una vestimenta parecida a la que tiene nuestro anciano amigo. Ella lo llama Albus Dumbledore, y él la llama Profesora McGonagall. Ambos hablan mientras, de repente, aparece un hombre gigante en una motocicleta voladora. Este baja y trae consigo a un bebé a quien se lo dejan a una “familia muggle”, refiriéndose así la profesora a la familia Dursley.

First of all, I want to make it clear that I’ve never read any of the Harry Potter novels or books in my life. I grew up watching the films practically from the moment I was a child, so don’t be surprised that, at such a young age, I thought they were some of the best fantasy films ever made. Yes, I was a huge, huge fan of the whole series and even had a CD/DVD box set with all seven films which, as a teenager, I’d watch whenever I could or whenever there was no signal on the telly (which was more often than not). I even remember all those Harry Potter film marathons that certain channels used to run, and how I’d spend hours watching them.
Now, as an adult, I’ve managed to learn a bit more about this magnificent franchise and have also discovered many things that set this film series apart from its original literary works. Yes, I admit that in the past I’ve said I’m a big fan of the idea that any film adaptation should aim to be as faithful as possible to the original work, whatever that may be. But if we start to rethink my tastes from when I was a child—such as the Harry Potter films—then one thing doesn’t sit right with the other. And yes, I won’t deny it, I loved these films and grew up with them; that’s why we’re here.
Antes que nada, quiero aclararles que nunca en mi vida he leído ninguna de las novelas o libros que existen de Harry Potter. Yo crecí viendo sus películas desde niño, prácticamente, así que no les sorprenda que, a tan temprana edad, pensara que estas eran de las mejores películas de fantasía que existan de todas. Si, fui muy pero muy fan de toda la saga e incluso tuve un CD/DVD con las siete películas que, cuando adolescente, veía siempre que podía o que no había señal en la televisión (lo cual era más frecuente de lo normal). Incluso recuerdo todos esos maratones que hacían ciertos canales de películas que veía de Harry Potter y que me las pasaba viéndolas todo el tiempo.
Ahora, después de grande es que conseguí aprender un poco más acerca de esta grandiosa franquicia y conocí también muchas cosas que diferencian a esta saga de películas de sus obras literarias originales. Si, admito que en el pasado he dicho que soy un gran fan de que toda adaptación cinematográfica debe de regirse a ser lo más fiel posible a una obra original, sea cual sea. Pero si nos ponemos a replantear mis gustos de cuando era niño como lo son las películas de Harry Potter entonces no tiene sentido una cosa con la otra. Y sí, no lo niego, amé estas películas y crecí con ellas, es por eso que estamos aquí.

I consider it one of the most iconic of them all, as it is, of course, the one that introduces us to the magnificent magical world of Harry Potter. We also get to know the beginnings of the famous ‘boy who lived’ and identify with him very easily thanks to his experience of discovering magic. The two-and-a-half-hour film is a torrent of magical, fascinating, funny and even slightly traumatic events. But we’ll talk more about that later.
We see how our protagonist grows up in a home where he is not loved at all. On the contrary, he is treated as a nuisance and a servant who sleeps in a tiny space under the stairs. His aunt and uncle treat him with contempt and his cousin constantly picks on him. However, one day Harry Potter receives a letter from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. But his Uncle Vernon, every time he tries to get rid of one of those invitation letters, more appear, and in rather fantastical ways. Eventually, they get away from it all and move to an island, but one night, on Harry’s birthday, they are visited by the giant I mentioned at the start, whose name is Rubeus Hagrid.
Pero bueno, volvamos a la película que lo inició todo, la primera entrega de toda la saga titulada Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. La considero como una de las más icónicas de todas ya que, por supuesto, es la que nos introduce al grandioso mundo mágico de Harry Potter. También llegamos a conocer los inicios del famoso “niño que vivió” y llegamos a empatizar muy fácilmente con él debido a su experiencia descubriendo la magia. Las dos horas y media de película son un caudal de eventos mágicos, fascinantes, divertidos y hasta un tanto traumáticos. Pero de eso ya hablaremos más adelante.
Vemos cómo nuestro protagonista crece en una casa donde no es querido para nada. De lo contrario, es tratado como un estorbo y un sirviente durmiendo en un espacio pequeño debajo de las escaleras de la casa. Sus tíos lo tratan con desprecio y su primo se mete constantemente con él. Sin embargo, un día Harry Potter recibe una carta que proviene de la Escuela Hogwarts de Magia y Hechicería. Pero su tío Vernon, cada vez que intenta eliminar alguna de esas cartas de invitación, aparecen más y de formas bastante fantásticas. Finalmente, se alejan de todo y se mudan a una isla, pero una noche, en el cumpleaños de Harry, reciben la visita del gigante que les mencioné al principio quien se llama Rubeus Hagrid.

Its story isn’t just entertaining thanks to its perfect blend of humour, fantasy, drama and mystery; it also features elements and characters that easily surprise and charm you. One thing I really admire about these Harry Potter films is their unique way of making you fall in love with their magical world, especially by showing us what Hogwarts is like. I’m sure some scenes or moments will have caught some people’s attention more than others, but there’s no one who hasn’t enjoyed this film, to be honest.
Or at least not that I’m aware of, which hasn’t happened yet. We’re not going to make comparisons with the novel of the same name or anything like that since, as I told you before, I haven’t read them to know. So let’s just focus on what we see in the film itself. Right from the start, we can see a clear intention on the part of the director and the creators to make us empathise primarily with the protagonist, Harry Potter. His situation as an orphan living with his aunt and uncle, who despise him, is something that easily tugs at our heartstrings, as some of us might feel we can relate to it to some extent. That’s why, later on in the film, we share the same excitement as he does when he goes to Hogwarts.
Sinceramente, no me canso nunca de ver esta película, a pesar de ya haberla visto una cantidad incontable de veces ya. Su historia no solo es entretenida debido a su mezcla perfecta de humor con fantasía, drama y misterio; sino que también posee elementos y personajes con los cuales es fácil llegar a sorprenderse y encariñarse. De algo que sí puedo admirar de estas películas de Harry Potter es su forma tan única de hacer que te enamores de su mundo mágico, sobre todo al momento de mostrarnos lo que es la Escuela Hogwarts. De seguro a alguno le habrá llamado más la atención unas escenas o momentos que otros, pero no hay quien no haya disfrutado de esta cinta, la verdad.
O al menos no que yo conozca, lo cual no ha sucedido aún. No vamos hacer comparaciones de la novela homónima ni nada parecido ya que, como les dije arriba, no las he leído para saber esto. Así que solo centrémonos en lo que llegamos a ver en la película como tal. Desde el principio podemos ver una clara intención del director y los creadores de empatizar principalmente con el protagonista, Harry Potter. Su situación como huérfano que vive en casa de sus tíos que lo desprecian es algo que fácilmente nos pega hondo ya que algunos podemos llegar a sentirnos parcialmente identificados. Es por eso que luego, en la siguiente hora de película, compartimos la misma emoción que él al ir a Hogwarts.
Source: Tenor.One thing I’d like to highlight, amongst the many that spring to mind right now, is the motto we hear when welcoming new students: ‘Your home will be your family’. That phrase must surely have struck a chord with Harry, especially as he recalls that he is an orphan and has never experienced what it’s like to have a proper family. We can also see this in how he becomes friends with Ron Weasley and later Hermione Granger, and how they become an indispensable part of his life. There is also the popularity Harry discovers he has because of what happened to him as a baby and the origin of the scar on his forehead.
This fame and the talent he is said to possess make him the target of criticism and ridicule, as is the case with Professor Snape, who is the first person Harry begins to suspect when he discovers that someone is searching for something valuable on the third floor of the school. Incidentally, another thing worth noting is our protagonist’s appalling intuition when it comes to investigating or identifying who is trying to steal the Philosopher’s Stone. For almost the entire film, they think Snape is the culprit (something that will certainly look very bad in the first season of the new Harry Potter TV series, which will be based on this very first novel).
Una cosa que quiero destacar, de entre tantas que se me pueden ocurrir en este momento, es el lema que escuchamos al momento de recibir a los nuevos estudiantes de “su casa será su familia”. De seguro que dicha frase le llegó al corazón a Harry, sobre todo al recordar que es huérfano y que nunca ha experimentado lo que es tener una familia como se debe. También podemos ver esto al volverse amigo de Ron Weasley y posteriormente de Hermione Granger cómo se vuelven parte indispensable de su vida. También está la popularidad que descubre tener Harry debido a lo que le sucedió cuando era bebé y el origen de su cicatriz en la frente.
Dicha fama y el talento que dicen que posee lo convierte en centro de críticas y burlas, como lo es el caso del Profesor Snape, quien es al primero que Harry empieza a sospechar cuando descubre que hay alguien buscando algo valioso en el tercer piso de la escuela. Por cierto, otra cosa a destacar es la pésima intuición que tiene nuestro protagonista al momento de investigar o identificar quién es el que está intentando robarse la Piedra del Hechicero. En casi toda la película piensan que es Snape el culpable (algo que, definitivamente, se verá muy mal en la primera temporada de la nueva serie de televisión que van a sacar de Harry Potter que se basará en esta misma primera novela).
Source: Tenor.Another thing that really entertained me was the character of Rubeus Hagrid, who, apart from being a great bloke (and not just because of his size), is also a bit of a klutz when it comes to trying to keep secrets or important information about Hogwarts under wraps. One of the most striking aspects of this film is the variety of fantastical creatures we see, such as the Mountain Troll, the Three-Headed Dog, the Unicorns and the Minotaurs. Although all of these are computer-generated, the visual quality and contrast have aged very well for their time.
Among the characters who really stand out in this film are Harry’s friends. Both Ron and Hermione shine in their own right, with him being the funny, laid-back lad of the group and her the intellectual, strict girl. I like how these characters are developed throughout the film; indeed, one could say that this is the film where we see them collaborate and participate most in the plot itself from start to finish. Especially towards the end, where we see them shine more by using their skills and knowledge to help Harry. He, for his part, also undergoes his own development, particularly during his first year at Hogwarts.
Otra cosa que me entretuvo bastante es el personaje de Rubeus Hagrid, quien aparte de ser una gran persona (no solo por su gran tamaño), sino que también es una persona un tanto torpe al momento de intentar esconder secretos o información importante de Hogwarts. De las cosas más llamativas que tiene esta película es la variedad de criaturas fantásticas que vemos como lo es el Troll de las Montañas, el Perro de Tres Cabezas, los Unicornios y los Minotauros. Si bien todos estos están hechos por computadora, la calidad visual y el contraste han envejecido muy bien para su época.
Entre los personajes que destacan bastante en esta película están los amigos de Harry. Tanto Ron como Hermione destacan cada quien por su lado, siendo uno el chico gracioso y tranquilo del grupo y ella la chica intelectual y estricta. Me gusta cómo desarrollan a estos personajes a lo largo de la película, incluso se podría decir que esta es la película donde los vemos colaborar y participar más en la trama como tal de inicio a fin. Sobre todo al final donde los vemos destacarse más utilizando sus habilidades y conocimientos para ayudar a Harry. Él por su parte, también tiene su desarrollo, sobre todo durante su primer año en Hogwarts.

That scene, and what happens immediately afterwards, is one of the film’s finest moments, thanks to its profound significance and emotional power. Many of us surely wish we could see a loved one again who is no longer with us, and that scene can easily move anyone, whether or not you’re a Harry Potter fan. The film isn’t just about drama, but also features action and suspense, such as the Hogwarts Quidditch match or the scene in the Forbidden Forest.
All of this blends perfectly with the fantasy and magic in this film, which is another aspect I really like. Not many fantasy works manage to balance so many elements and make them look as good as we see in the Harry Potter films. Although, if I had to complain about anything, it would be some illogical and nonsensical elements, such as the game of Quidditch itself, which is one of the most dangerous and bizarre things in existence. Logic and common sense are nowhere to be seen in these matches, and the idea that 11- to 17-year-olds are playing this without any protection is quite absurd, but never mind.
Me impactó bastante la escena donde Harry se encuentra con un espejo gigante que le revela lo que más desea en su corazón y se ve a sí mismo con sus padres a su lado. Dicha escena y lo que sucede justo después es de los mejores momentos que tiene esta película debido al enorme significado y valor emotivo que posee. Muchos seguramente deseamos poder volver a ver a algún ser querido que ya no tenemos al lado y esa escena fácilmente nos puede impactar a cualquiera, seas o no seas fan de Harry Potter. La película no solo posee drama, sino también acción y suspenso como lo es el Partido de Quidditch de Hogwarts o la escena en el Bosque Prohibido.
Todo esto está sumado de forma perfecta con la fantasía y la magia en esta película, lo cual es otra cosa más que me gusta bastante. No muchas obras de fantasía consiguen equilibrar tantas cosas y que se vean tan bien como lo que llegamos a ver en las películas Harry Potter. Aunque, si de algo he de quejarme serían algunos temas ilógicos y sin sentido como lo es el mismo juego de Quidditch que es de lo más peligroso y extraño que existe. La lógica y sentido común no lo vemos aquí en sus partidos y pensar que hay chicos de 11 a 17 años de edad jugando esto sin ninguna protección es algo bastante absurdo, pero bueno.

You simply have to enjoy the whole magnificent story we see in the films, especially in this first instalment, which achieved what almost no one thought possible at the time. I believe Chris Columbus did an excellent job of adapting this first Harry Potter book into a film. Particularly in terms of the audiovisual aspect, which made extensive use of practical visual elements and effects, as well as cinematography that was innovative for the time.
Still and moving shots, practical visual effects, and a warm, varied colour palette. Another thing I liked, which I’ve already mentioned above, is the use of CGI in this film. Particularly when recreating the various creatures we see and certain shots or backdrops, such as Hogwarts Castle. Whilst you can tell now that it’s computer-generated, for the 2000s it’s not half bad. The sound effects are also excellent, particularly practical and powerful at certain points. But what I liked most was the film’s soundtrack, which has gone down in history as one of the best ever made. Anyway, I’ll leave you with this fantasy film that I’m sure you’re already familiar with.
Personally, I’d give it a 9/10 rating as far as the fantasy genre is concerned.
Al momento de hablar de Harry Potter, no les recomiendo utilizar el sentido común o la lógica a lo largo de sus obras. Solo hay que disfrutar de toda esta grandiosa historia que vemos en sus películas, sobre todo en esta primera entrega que logró lo que casi nadie creía posible en su época. Considero que Chris Columbus hizo un excelente trabajo al adaptar este primer libro de Harry Potter en esta película. Sobre todo hablando de su apartado audiovisual, el cual utilizaron mayormente elementos y recursos visuales prácticos, además de una fotografía novedosa para la época.
Planos fijos y en movimiento, efectos visuales prácticos, paleta de colores cálidos y variados. Otra cosa que me gustó y que ya les mencioné arriba es el uso del CGI en esta película. Sobre todo al momento de recrear las distintas criaturas que vemos y algunos planos o fondos como lo es el Castillo de Hogwarts. Si bien se nota ahora que está hecho por computadora, para ser de los años 2000 no están tan mal. Los efectos de sonido también son excelentes, sobre todo prácticos y fuertes en ciertos puntos. Pero lo que más me gustó fue la banda sonora de la película que pasó a la posteridad como una de las mejores que existen. En fin, les dejo esta cinta de fantasía que seguramente conocen ya.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 9/10 en lo que respecta al género de fantasía.
