I Am Legend (2007) | Nattosheru Review [ENG/SPA]

Yes, I also grew up watching this gem of a film since I was a child. It's definitely not a movie I ever tire of watching, even though I've seen it so many times that I know it by heart. Of all the Will Smith movies I've seen in my life, I think this is one of the very few that have had a real impact on me, beyond entertaining me with his unique acting style or his usual sarcastic humor. Apart from this, the very fact that it shows us a dystopian world where almost all of humanity has been wiped out by a mutant virus was one of the main reasons I was inspired to want to see more works of this kind. This is one of the first post-apocalyptic films I recommend watching, as well as being one of the best for its mix of action and psychological suspense, not to mention the high level of acting, direction, and production it has. If you haven't seen this movie, then you're missing out on the best that cinema has to offer.

I want to clarify that the reason I haven't talked about this great movie before is simply because I thought it was part of the famous zombie subgenre (a subgenre that I plan to do a special on in the future, talking about movies of this style). However, after some research and several reviews, I learned that this was not actually the case. A mistake that many of us have probably made is thinking that what we see in this film are zombies because of their origin and striking resemblance. But in reality, they are a unique version of vampires (something that is not too far from zombies or the undead, but that is a separate issue). What's more, this confusion even makes sense when you consider that the novel of the same name on which I Am Legend is based was one of the main sources of inspiration for the iconic 1960s film Night of the Living Dead, which gave rise to the zombie subgenre in the world of cinema. With this in mind, we can now continue with the review.

Si, yo también crecí viendo esta joya de película desde que era un niño. Definitivamente no es una cinta que me canse de ver, a pesar de haberla visto tantas veces que me la sé de memoria. De entre tantas películas que he visto de Will Smith en mi vida, creo que esta es de esas poquísimas que me han impactado bastante, más allá de haberme entretenido por su estilo único para actuar o por su humor sarcástico de siempre. Aparte de esto, el mismo hecho de mostrarnos un mundo distópico donde casi todas las humanidad ha sido aniquilada por un virus mutante fue de los principales motivos de inspiración para querer ver más obras de este estilo. Esta es de las primeras cintas post-apocalípticas que recomiendo ver, además de ser de las mejores por su mezcla de acción y suspenso psicológico; sin mencionar el alto nivel de actuación, dirección y producción que tiene. Si eres de los que no ha visto esta película entonces te estás perdiendo de lo mejor que el cine tiene para ofrecer.

Quiero aclarar que el hecho de no haber hablado antes de esta grandiosa película fue por el simple motivo de haber creído que formaba parte del famoso subgénero de zombies (subgénero del cual pienso hacer un especial en el futuro hablándoles de puras películas de este estilo). Sin embargo, luego de una investigación y varias revisiones, supe que en realidad no era el caso. Una equivocación que seguramente muchos hemos llegado a pensar es el hecho de que lo que vemos en esta película son zombies por su origen y gran parecido. Pero en realidad son una versión única de vampiros (algo que no está muy lejos de los zombis o los no-muertos, pero eso ya es un tema aparte). Es más, dicha confusión tiene incluso sentido al saber que la novela homónima de la cual está basada I Am Legend fue una de las principales fuentes de inspiración de la icónica obra de los 60s llamada Night of the Living Dead, obra que dió origen al subgénero de zombies en el mundo del cine. Let's start by talking about the story told in this film, which lasts over an hour and a half. In it, we learn about what appears to be the daily life of our protagonist, Dr. Robert Neville. During the day, he spends his time hunting, searching the city for supplies, and sending out radio messages in search of other survivors. The rest of the time, he tries to find a way to cure the few humans who are still alive, but who are a strange mutation of vampires, hairless cannibals, and super sensitive to sunlight. Being immune, Dr. Neville has been experimenting with his blood for the past three years to find a cure for the Krippin virus. However, his life, with his only companion being Sam, his German shepherd, will be affected by the dangerous behavior of the mutants he is experimenting on. This is where his life falls into a bottomless pit of despair, sadness, loneliness, and pain.

Without giving away any spoilers for the few who I doubt have not seen it (or do not remember it), I will just tell you what I like so much about this film. As for the story, I like that it focuses mainly on how we see this dystopian and desolate world through the eyes of our protagonist. That is, from the beginning, all we see is how Dr. Neville tries to survive in this abandoned city full of so-called Darkseekers (vampire and cannibal mutants). From the way he walks around the city, what he does, what he investigates, and what he avoids doing out of caution is what we see throughout this feature film. This easily puts us in his shoes, as we can experience and feel everything he feels, day and night. What makes this an incomparable experience is the point at which his life changes completely after an unexpected event that causes him to lose what little sanity he has tried to maintain during these years of loneliness and survival in a dangerous and abandoned place.

Empecemos hablando de la historia que nos cuenta esta película de más de hora y media de duración. En ella podemos conocer lo que parece ser la vida diaria de nuestro protagonista, el Dr. Robert Neville. Mientras de día se la pasa cazando, revisando la ciudad en busca de provisiones y mandando un mensaje de radio en busca de algún otro sobreviviente; el resto del tiempo intenta encontrar una forma de curar a los pocos humanos que están vivos, pero que son una mutación extraña de vampiros, caníbales sin pelo y súper sensibles a la luz solar. Al ser inmune, el Dr. Neville experimenta con su sangre para así conseguir un remedio que elimine el virus Krippin durante estos últimos tres años. Sin embargo, su vida solo con la única compañía que tiene que es a Sam, su pastor alemán, se verá afectada por la conducta peligrosa de dichos mutantes con los que él experimenta. Es aquí donde su vida cae en un declive sin fondo de desesperación, tristeza, soledad y dolor.

Sin caer en spoilers para los pocos que dudo que no la hayan visto (o no la recuerden); solo les diré qué es lo que me gusta tanto de esta película. En cuanto a su historia, me gusta que se centra mayormente en cómo vemos este mundo distópico y desolado ante los ojos de nuestro protagonista. Es decir, que desde el principio todo lo que vemos es cómo el Dr. Neville intenta sobrevivir en esta ciudad abandonada y repleta de los llamados Darkseekers (los mutantes vampiros y caníbales). Desde la forma en la que anda por la ciudad, lo que hace, lo que investiga y lo que evita hacer por precaución es lo que vemos a lo largo de este largometraje. Esto nos pone fácilmente en sus zapatos, ya que podemos vivir y sentir todo lo que él siente de día y de noche, inclusive. Lo que hace de esto una experiencia incomparable es el punto en el que su vida cambia por completo, luego de un evento inesperado que lo hace perder la poca cordura que ha intentado mantener en estos años de soledad y supervivencia en un lugar peligroso y abandonado.

It comes as no surprise to anyone how great it is to see a protagonist like this one psychologically decline due to a series of unfortunate events and a very difficult life to cope with, such as Dr. Neville's in this film. I think this is why I find it very difficult to forget this story, with all its plot twists, surprises, and the way in which the protagonist's little credibility and confidence gradually disappear until they reach their breaking point at the end of the second arc. Details such as the mannequins, the rules, and Neville's perfectionist, nostalgic, and temperamental behavior highlight this common mental state in a lonely character like him. Another highlight that I really liked about this film is the way they show us these mutants or nocturnal creatures in the city. This version of albino vampires and cannibals resembles zombies, but they have characteristics that make them very different from the undead: their intelligence, behavior, and instincts.

I also really like the relationship Neville has with Sam, his German shepherd. As his best and only companion in this dystopian and dangerous world, we can see this relationship as an excellent partnership between a man and his best friend. What undoubtedly makes it even more special is the famous final outcome of this relationship, a point that was crucial to the protagonist's total emotional and psychological breakdown. It's hard not to cry or feel pain in this part of the film. On the other hand, we have the third act and the ending of this film. The latter was criticized at the time for how different it is from the ending of the novel of the same name, among other things. They even released an alternate ending to give fans something to talk about over the last few decades. It's not unusual to see an excellent film with an ending that isn't as good. And I'm one of those people who expect an ending to be as good as the work itself, because otherwise it wouldn't make sense. But I think in this case it has been greatly exaggerated.

No es una sorpresa para nadie el hecho de lo genial que es ver a un protagonista como este decaer psicológicamente por una serie de eventos desafortunados y una vida muy difícil de sobrellevar como la que tiene el Dr. Neville en esta película. Creo que es por esto que se me hace muy difícil olvidar dicha historia con todo y sus giros de trama, sus sorpresas y la forma en la que la poca credibilidad y confianza que tiene el protagonista se va acabando poco a poco hasta llegar a su punto de quiebre al final de su segundo arco. Detalles como los maniquíes, las reglas o la conducta perfeccionista, nostálgica y temperamental que posee Neville destacan dicho estado mental común en un personaje solitario como él. Otro punto a destacar y que me gustó mucho de esta película es la forma en la que nos muestran estos mutantes o criaturas nocturnas que hay en la ciudad. Esta versión de vampiros albinos y caníbales tienen su parecido a los zombies, pero poseen características que los hacen muy diferentes a los muertos vivientes: su inteligencia, su conducta y sus instintos.

También me gusta mucho la relación que tienen Neville con Sam, su pastor alemán. Siendo su mejor y única compañera en este mundo distópico y peligroso, podemos notar dicha relación como una excelente dupla de un hombre y su mejor amigo. Lo que sin duda alguna lo hace más especial aún es el famoso desenlace final que tiene esta relación, punto que fue crucial para el quiebre total del protagonista a nivel emocional y psicológico. Es difícil no llorar o sentir dolor en esta parte de la película. Por otro lado, tenemos lo que es el tercer acto y el final de esta cinta. Esto último fue objeto de críticas para la obra en su época por lo diferente que es al final de la novela homónima, entre otras cosas. Incluso hasta sacaron un final alternativo para darle algo a los fans por lo cual hablar durante estas últimas décadas. No es una novedad ver una excelente película con un final que no es igual de bueno. Y yo soy de esos que esperan que un final sea igual de bueno que su obra en sí, ya que sino no tendría sentido. Pero creo que en este caso se ha exagerado mucho.

As I said before, what we see from beginning to end is this dystopian world through the eyes of what appears to be the only human survivor on the planet. This fact puts the protagonist in a very difficult position, as he is completely convinced that the future depends on his research and all his efforts helping to find a cure for humanity, or at least for those who are mutated and live in the shadows. While this premise sounds more like that of a typical heroic protagonist, the development we see in Neville's character makes him very different from most. That is why, in the end, with the introduction of certain characters that I will not mention, Neville's way of thinking begins to change, as he once again makes the same decisions he made in the past to stay in the same place where it all began. The decision he makes in the end is a clear sign that sometimes you have to shut up, listen, and delegate. Undoubtedly, this is a clear message that we are not alone in this world. I consider this to be one of the best post-apocalyptic films with such good character and story development that exists today.

Last but not least, let's talk about the technical and visual aspects of this film. Directed by the same person who brought us the famous Constantine, it is to be expected that the audiovisual quality is so good for the year in which it was released. The cinematography, atmosphere, and visual effects make this film a gem of its kind. The aerial and moving shots, the views of the completely desolate city of Manhattan, and the mixture of light tones and dark, silent scenes at key moments are wonderful. The makeup and visual appearance of the Darkseekers in the film are also top-notch. The excellent use of practical and computer-generated visual effects offers us a variety of unforgettable scenes. The sound effects are top-notch, as is the film's soundtrack. Especially in those moments of tension when you feel like your heart is going to jump out of your chest because of the suspense it conveys. Without a doubt, this masterpiece is one you must see at least ten times in your life.

Personally, I give it a 9/10 rating in terms of the science fiction, suspense, and action genres.

Como dije antes, lo que vemos de principio a fin es este mundo distópico con los ojos del que parece ser el único sobreviviente humano del planeta. Este hecho pone en un papel muy difícil al protagonista, ya que está completamente convencido de que el futuro depende de que su investigación y todo sus esfuerzos ayuden a darle una cura a la humanidad, o al menos a los que están mutados y viven en las sombras. Si bien esta premisa suena más al del típico protagonista heróico, el desarrollo que vemos en el personaje de Neville lo hace muy diferente a la mayoría. Es por eso que, al final, con la introducción de ciertos personajes que no mencionaré, esta forma de pensar de Neville empieza a deformarse, a su vez que vuelve a tomar las mismas decisiones que en su pasado de quedarse en el mismo lugar en el que empezó todo. La decisión que toma al final es una muestra clara de que a veces hay que callar, escuchar y delegar. Indudablemente, este es un mensaje claro de que no estamos solos en este mundo. Considero que esta es de las mejores películas post-apocalíptica con tan buenos desarrollos de personajes e historias que hay en la actualidad.

Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos ahora del apartado técnico y visual de esta película. Dirigida por el mismo que nos trajo la famosa obra de Constantine, es de esperarse un nivel audiovisual tan bueno para el año en el que fue estrenada. Tanto la fotografía como el ambiente y los efectos visuales que tiene esta cinta la hacen una joya en su tipo. Las tomas aéreas o en movimiento, las vistas de la ciudad de Manhattan completamente desolada y la mezcla de luces con tonos claros y escenarios oscuros y en silencio en momentos clave son una maravilla. También el tema del maquillaje y el aspecto visual de los Darkseekers en la película son de lo mejor. El excelente uso de los efectos visuales prácticos y hechos por computadora nos ofrece una variedad de escenarios inolvidables. Los efectos de sonido son de lo mejor, al igual que lo es la banda sonora que tiene la película. Sobre todo en esos momentos de tensión en los que sientes que el corazón se te va a salir por el suspenso que transmite. Sin duda alguna, esta obra maestra es una que debes de ver al menos diez veces en tu vida.

Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 9/10 en lo que respecta al género de ciencia ficción, suspenso y acción.
