As I said at the beginning, this is a movie that I consider one of the best I have seen since I was a kid. The influence and impact it has on my life is so great that I even preferred it among the great variety of fictional futures related to robots that I know in the world of cinema. Obviously, the first impression that this film always gave me is both for the visual aspect it has (especially the robots) and the amount of action it has from beginning to end, with Will Smith as the main character. Otherwise, it wasn't until recently that I realized how well made both its story and characters are. On the other hand, I was very surprised by the fact that some people criticized it at the time for having a "boring plot" or very simplistic, something that makes no sense to me. While it is true that the almost two hours of film have a somewhat lacking amount of depth in terms of certain issues it mentions, its seemingly simple plot makes it perfect for all lovers of fiction and action, especially. But there's no denying that in terms of drama and psychological suspense it also has its own.

Como ya dije al principio, esta es una película que considero es de las mejores que he visto desde que era un niño. La influencia e impacto que tiene en mi vida es tan grande que incluso la preferí entre la gran variedad de futuros ficticios relacionados a robots que conozco en el mundo del cine. Por otro lado, me sorprendió mucho el hecho de que haya gente que la criticó en su momento por tener una “trama aburrida” o muy simplista, cosa que para mí no le encuentro sentido. Si bien es cierto que las casi dos horas de película poseen una cantidad un tanto carente de profundidad en cuanto a ciertos temas que menciona, su trama aparentemente sencilla la hace perfecta para todos los amantes de la ficción y la acción, en especial. Pero tampoco hay que negar que en cuanto a drama y suspenso psicología también tiene lo suyo.

Let's start talking about its story, which is set -as I mentioned above- in a near future where robots serve humanity and coexist thanks to the famous Three Laws of Robotics. However, in contrast to this fantastic future full of peace and security, there is a detective who has had a dark past with robots, and we can see this in the way he behaves and reacts to these machines. It is not until the case of the death of Dr. Alfred Lanning that he learns that there is a robot that is very different from the others and that is involved in all this. While visiting the USR (US Robotics) headquarters and searching for clues that reveal details about this alleged murder, the detective will experience certain incidents with the machines, thus asserting his trauma and distrust of these robots and the corporation that created them. During his investigation he meets the robopsychologist, Dr. Susan Calvin, who at first is skeptical of the detective's theory that a robot can kill a human, but after checking out the strange NS-5 robot named Sonny she realizes that it can do anything, ignoring even the Three Laws.

The first thing I would like to point out is the mixture of crime with psychological suspense that this movie has, one in which we must remember is set in a world where robots and humans coexist without risk or danger. It should also be mentioned that everything we see focuses mainly on the life of Detective Spooner, who is practically the only person in this world who distrusts machines. The case he is assigned is where the main theme of the film develops: can a robot be capable of harming or killing a person, thus ignoring the Three Laws of Robotics? At the beginning this theme is treated as a joke, an absurd idea of the detective, which makes him work alone most of the time while his life is in danger before a series of unfortunate events with the machines. What strikes me is the way the film paints people's ignorance about the danger of robots as a cloak or veil that hides something hard to believe is really going on under their noses as the only one who knows the truth tries to reveal it to this seemingly peaceful world.

Empecemos hablando de su historia, la cual se ambienta -como ya mencioné arriba- en un futuro cercano donde robots sirven a la humanidad y conviven gracias a las famosas Tres Leyes de la Robótica. Sin embargo, en contraste con este fantástico futuro repleto de paz y seguridad, se encuentra un detective que ha tenido su oscuro pasado con los robots y esto lo podemos notar con su forma de comportarse y reaccionar ante estas máquinas. No es sino durante el caso de la muerte del Dr. Alfred Lanning que se entera de que existe un robot muy diferente a los demás y que está envuelto en todo esto. Mientras visita la central del a USR (US Robotics) y busca pistas que revelen detalles acerca de este supuesto homicidio, el detective experimentará ciertos incidentes con las máquinas, aseverando así su trauma y desconfianza ante estos robots y la corporación que los creó. También hay que mencionar que todo lo que vemos se centra principalmente en la vida del detective Spooner, quien es prácticamente la única persona de este mundo que desconfía de las máquinas. El caso que le asignan es en el que se desarrolla el principal tema de la cinta: ¿Puede un robot ser capaz de hacerlr daño o matar a una persona, ignorando así las Tres Leyes de la Robótica? Al inicio se trata este tema como un chiste, una idea absurda del detective, lo cual hace que trabaje solo casi siempre mientras su vida se encuentra en peligro ante una serie de eventos desafortunados con las máquinas. Lo que me llama la atención es la forma en la que la película nos pinta la ignorancia de la gente sobre el peligro de los robots como una capa o un velo que oculta algo difícil de creer y que realmente está sucediendo debajo de sus narices mientras el único que sabe la verdad la intenta revelar ante este mundo aparentemente pacífico.

I would also like to mention how the role played by Will Smith in this film makes him a classic of both the science fiction and action genres. His character stands out, apart from his traumatic past and his eccentric behavior with robots; for being someone who seems to prefer to live in the past. His way of dressing, his apartment and even his way of driving and talking make him someone old-fashioned and different from what people are in this world of robots and advanced technology. In every minute we can see how people contradict him and even make fun of him for the way he thinks and look ridiculous without any evidence about any crime committed by a robot. It is not until the end that we see how he practically becomes the hero or savior of the world already when they are about to be annihilated in a pitched battle (I think I exaggerate on the latter). All this makes us empathize little by little with the character and even more so when we learn the reason why his hatred against robots is so strong. Obviously, seeing Will Smith in a movie of this style it is not surprising that he ends up fighting, chasing or being chased by robots while saving the world.

As seemingly simple and super cliché as this ending souWnds, the plot itself and the way the story unfolds in this movie is something that fascinates me to no end. The dialogues, Dr. Lanning's monologues and the simple yet special way of dealing with topics such as the ghost theory among machines, the behavior of robots and the possibility of one being able to dream and keep secrets is fascinating to me. I think that what Isaac Asimov surely managed to convey with his stories written in his books was what was also tried to be conveyed in this movie inspired by one of his greatest hits of the genre. Only that, of course, the enormous amount of action and the simple plot may have played against it by showing us at the end a denouement that makes us think of other similar movies and not more in what it was possibly intended to convey from the beginning. And speaking of its ending, despite it seems an open ending and free to interpretation, the way it is made is a marvel for me (as is the whole film in general, really).

Quisiera mencionar también cómo el papel que interpreta Will Smith en esta película lo convierte en un clásico tanto del género de la ciencia ficción como también de la acción. Su personaje se destaca, aparte de su traumático pasado y su conducta excéntrica con los robots; por ser alguien que parece preferir vivir en el pasado. Su forma de vestir, su apartamento y hasta su forma de manejar y hablar lo hacen alguien anticuado y diferente a lo que la gente es en este mundo de robots y tecnología avanzada. En cada minuto podemos ver cómo la gente lo contradice y se burlan incluso de él por su forma de pensar y quedar en ridículo sin ninguna evidencia sobre algún crimen cometido por un robot. No es sino al final que vemos cómo se convierte prácticamente en el héroe o salvador del mundo ya cuando están a punto de ser aniquilados en una batalla campal (creo que exagero en esto último). Todo esto hace que nos empaticemos poco a poco con el personaje y más aún cuando nos enteramos de la razón de por qué su odio contra los robots es tan fuerte. Obviamente, al ver a Will Smith en una película de este estilo no es de extrañar que este termine peleando, persiguiendo o siendo perseguido por robots mientras salva el mundo.

A pesar de lo aparentemente simple y súper cliché que suene este final, la trama en sí y la forma en la que la historia se desarrolla en esta película es algo que me fascina en sobremanera. Los diálogos, los monólogos del Dr. Lanning y la forma tan simple y a la vez especial de tratar temas como la teoría del fantasma entre las máquinas, la conducta de los robots y la posibilidad de que uno logre soñar y guardar secretos me es fascinante. Pienso que lo que seguramente Isaac Asimov logró transmitir con sus historias escritas en sus libros fue lo que se intentó transmitir también en esta película inspirada en uno de sus mayores éxitos del género. Solo que, claro está, la cantidad enorme de acción y la trama tan simple que tiene puede que le jugara en contra al mostrarnos al final un desenlace que nos hace pensar en otras películas similares y no más en lo que posiblemente se intentó transmitir desde un principio. Y hablando de su final, a pesar de parecer un final abierto y libre a interpretación, la manera en la que está hecha es una maravilla para mi (como lo es toda la película en general, la verdad).

If I have to mention something that I didn't like so much about this wonderful movie, it's Sonny's participation. I like that he was given his own personality, being a machine with the ability to think, dream and feel emotions. That this was created independently and disconnected from the main network (VIKI) of the company (USR) gives him that aspect of being both valuable and yet dangerous. However, what we learn of this character is too little to quickly empathize with him as we do with the protagonist or other characters such as Dr. Susan Calvin. Even his appearance at the end denotes something that might have made more of an impact if he had been given more involvement or development to see him in the role of "the savior of the robots" or something like that. But well, leaving aside the potential that this character could have had, I like how the plot is developed in general with simple to understand details such as "breadcrumbs" or Sonny's secrets and dreams. As for VIKI, rather than seeing her as the ultimate villain, it's more like the interpretation of the Three Laws taken to the extreme, nomás. Here's another character with wasted potential.

Last but not least, let's talk about the best thing about this film: its technical and visual aspect. For a film released more than 20 years ago, the level of quality, details and good work in the use of CGI and other special effects is impressive. The visual section of the city, the design and realism of the robots, the futuristic visual aesthetics of this world and the variety of effects and styles of movement and transition is the best. Even the use of slow motion, aerial and 360° cameras give a special essence to this work. But the best of all this is, without a doubt, the wonderful job they did with the soundtrack of this movie. A soundtrack that I can easily recognize 50 years from now, even in the future. And it is incredible that very few films have managed to convey so much emotion, feeling and impression in a background musical composition as this film does. This, added to the excellent work of sound effects, makes it one of the best masterpieces in the entire industry. Undoubtedly, this movie is one of the best I have ever seen. If you are a fan of cinema and the science fiction genre, but have not yet seen this wonderful movie, I invite you to watch it now before you forget and regret it.

Personally, I give it a 9.5/10 rating as far as the sci-fi/action genre is concerned.

Si es de mencionar algo que no me gustó tanto de esta maravilla de película es la participación de Sonny. El apartado visual de la ciudad, el diseño y realismo de los robots, la estética visual futurista de este mundo y la variedad de efectos y estilos de movimiento y transición es de lo mejor. Incluso el uso de cámaras lentas, cámaras aéreas y en 360° le dan una esencia especial a esta obra. Pero lo mejor de todo esto es, sin duda alguna, el maravilloso trabajo que hicieron con la banda sonora de esta película. Una banda sonora que puedo llegar a reconocer fácilmente de aquí a 50 años en el futuro, inclusive. Y es increíble que muy pocas películas me han logrado transmitir tanta emoción, sentimiento e impresión en una composición musical de fondo como lo logra hacer esta película. Esto, sumado al excelente trabajo de efectos de sonido que tiene la convierte en una de las mejores obras maestras de toda la industria. Sin duda alguna, esta película es de las mejores que he visto en mi vida. Si eres fan del cine y del género de la ciencia ficción, pero aún no has visto esta maravillosa película, te invito a verla ya antes de que se te olvide y te arrepientas.

Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 9.5/10 en lo que respecta al género de ciencia ficción y acción.
