You have no idea how much I've wanted to talk to you about this movie since I started this science fiction special exactly one year ago. To say that Interstellar is one of the best movies I've ever seen in my entire life is an understatement, and I'm not exaggerating in the slightest. Although it's a film that was released just eleven years ago, I feel like it completely changed my life after seeing it more than once or twice on television. Apart from being an absolute audiovisual marvel, the film has everything I love about this genre: dystopian futures, space travel, time travel, aliens, anomalies, and wormholes.

But best of all, both the story and the characters are so well done that it's hard to forget them no matter how many years go by. Undoubtedly, Christopher Nolan has once again proven that he is one of the best directors around today, not only in the science fiction genre but also in the entire film and television industry. It's not often that you find a film that, from beginning to end, completely hooks you and makes you feel a rollercoaster of emotions. Interstellar not only achieves this easily and quickly, but also leaves you with valuable lessons at the end.

No tienen ni idea de lo mucho que he querido hablarles de esta película desde que empecé con este especial de ciencia ficción, hace justamente un año atrás. Decir que Interstellar es de las mejores películas que he visto en toda mi vida es quedarse corto y no lo digo por exagerar ni un poco. Si bien es una cinta que tiene apenas once años de haberse estrenado, siento que cambió por completo mi vida luego de haberla visto más de una o dos veces por televisión. Aparte de ser una completa maravilla audiovisual, la película tiene todo lo que amo de este género: futuros distópicos, viajes al espacio, viajes en el tiempo, extraterrestres, anomalías y agujeros de gusano.

Pero lo mejor de todo esto es que tanto su historia como sus personajes están tan bien hechos que es difícil olvidarlos sin importar que pasen los años. Indudablemente, Christopher Nolan ha conseguido demostrar una vez más que es de los mejores directores que se pueden tener ahora en lo que respecta no solo al género de la ciencia ficción sino también en toda la industria del cine y la televisión. No siempre se puede encontrar una película que, de principio a fin, te enganche por completo y te haga sentir un montón de emociones sin parar como si estuvieras montado en una montaña rusa. Interstellar no solo consigue eso de forma fácil y rápida, sino que también te deja lecciones muy valiosas al final.

But before continuing to praise this masterpiece, I would first like to tell you a little more about its plot (without giving away any spoilers, of course). Our former NASA pilot and engineer, now a farmer with two children to care for, lives each day as if he were waiting to do something more incredible than planting corn for the rest of his life. His dreams of going to space are clear, especially when he talks to his children's teachers and they mention the problems his youngest daughter, Murph, has had with her classmates. The teacher tells him that his "crazy ideas" about traveling to space and all that have caused constant arguments, which Joseph ends up doing in the end, causing his daughter to be expelled from school.

On the one hand, it is understandable that this society has stopped dreaming of going into space and considers all the events of the past regarding NASA's voyages to be pure fake news. In a world where food is scarce because of a deadly toxin that feeds on the oxygen we supposedly need, those ideas of going to the moon seem more like a fairy tale invented by people with tin foil hats. Joseph Cooper disagrees with this, as he knows that science will lead them to a better future. His daughter Murph follows in his footsteps and decides to investigate something that has been troubling her from the beginning. This is where the film gets even more interesting, as we are shown clues that, at first, appear to be the work of a poltergeist.

Pero antes de continuar alabando esta obra maestra, quisiera primero hablarles un poco más sobre su trama (obviamente, sin darles ningún spoiler). Nuestro ex-piloto e ingeniero de la NASA, ahora granjero con dos hijos al cuidado, vive el día a día como si estuviera esperando hacer algo más increíble que sembrar maíz por el resto de su vida. However, after an incident on a stormy day, Joseph tells Murph that it is not a ghost in her room, but gravity. This gravitational anomaly makes Joseph focus on what it is trying to tell us. He deciphers a message in binary code that leads them to a specific place near a mountain. As they drive to that place, they come across a secret facility that they later discover belongs to NASA itself. All of this happens in just the first fifteen or twenty minutes of the film, which is over two and a half hours long. But don't worry about the length of Interstellar; I assure you it's worth it.

One of the things I really like about this film is that it does a great job of introducing us to this dystopian world where humanity itself is in danger of extinction. The situation in which the Cooper family lives may give us a lot to think about. Especially the way Joseph tries to see the positive side of everything, but in reality sees no future for this world, especially when everything he knows about science and history is overshadowed by falsehoods, negligence, and responsibilities. As he himself mentions at the beginning, he used to be a dreamer, but now he is just a regretful farmer. That is why, as he becomes obsessed with the gravitational anomaly in his daughter's room, his interest in science grows again.

Sin embargo, luego de un incidente en un día de tormenta, Joseph le dice a Murph que no es un fantasma lo que hay en su cuarto, sino que es la gravedad. Una de las cosas que me gusta mucho de esta película es que logran introducirnos muy bien en este mundo distópico donde la misma humanidad está en peligro de extinción. Esta situación en la que viven la familia Cooper puede que nos ponga a pensar bastante. Sobre todo la forma en la que Joseph intenta verle el lado positivo a todo, pero que en realidad no le ve futuro a este mundo y menos cuando todo lo que sabe de la ciencia y la historia le es opacado con falsedades, negligencias y responsabilidades. Como él mismo nos lo menciona al principio, antes era un soñador, pero ahora es solo un granjero arrepentido. Es por eso que al obsesionarse con la anomalía gravitacional del cuarto de su hija, su interés por la ciencia vuelve a crecer.

What follows after finding the secret NASA base is something else entirely, as from here on out the film takes an interesting turn, but with a plot that sounds a bit cliché, to be honest. Without going into too much detail, one of the ways NASA is working to "save the world" is by going into space in search of a planet with the necessary conditions for life. While this sounds impossible to achieve, it just so happens that a wormhole has appeared out of nowhere near Saturn. The idea is to go and find that planet with the right conditions, but for that they need a competent pilot, and this is where our protagonist comes in. As I said, all this sounds very cliché with the whole saving the world thing and all that.

While it seems to be that way for much of the film, the truth is that I don't care at all when I see how well the story is done. I say this because, knowing the risks involved in this great mission, Josep still decides to go, which means saying goodbye to his family. While this part doesn't feel so heartbreaking at first, later on we will see how difficult and painful it will be for our protagonist. The film is a perfect space adventure, the kind that any fan would love to experience firsthand. Or at least that's what anyone would think at first... until they see everything that Joseph and his team go through.

Lo que sigue después de encontrar la base secreta de la NASA ya es otra cosa, ya que a partir de aquí la película toma un rumbo interesante, pero con una trama que suena un tanto a cliché, la verdad. Para no entrar en detalles, una de las formas de “salvar el mundo” de la cual la NASA está trabajando es yendo al espacio en busca de un planeta con las condiciones necesarias para vivir. Si bien esto suena imposible de lograr, está la casualidad de que un agujero de gusano haya aparecido como si nada cerca de Saturno. La idea es ir y buscar ese planeta con condiciones, pero para eso necesitan un piloto competente y es aquí donde entra nuestro protagonista. Como ya dije, todo esto suena muy cliché por el tema de salvar al mundo y todo eso.

Si bien parece ser así en gran parte de la película, la verdad es que no me importa en lo absoluto al ver lo bien hecha que está dicha historia. Esto lo digo ya que, al conocer los riesgos que hay en esta gran misión, Josep aún así decide ir, lo cual hará que se despida de su familia. Si bien esta parte no se siente tan desgarradora al principio, más adelante veremos lo fuerte y doloroso que será para nuestro protagonista. La película es una perfecta aventura espacial, de esas que cualquier fanático desearía vivir en carne propia. O al menos eso es lo que pensaría cualquiera al principio… hasta que luego ven todo por lo que pasan Joseph y su equipo.

This is another thing that fascinates me about this film: how tragic this journey into space turns out to be. Unlike many other films of this kind, here we see how every mistake or decision they make leads to an endless chain of consequences that will make them live decades in just a few hours. What I like about this is that it doesn't paint this space adventure as if it were a fairy tale, but rather as something that no one in their right mind would want to experience. While the condition of humanity on Earth and the need to find a better place drives them forward, in the end... not everything ends so well for our astronauts.

Beyond this, another thing that caught my attention about this film is how easily it gets us excited and then makes us suffer, shattering all the hope we had for this mission that we see Joseph and his team carry out from start to finish. If it's not because of how terribly ruthless space can be when traveling between galaxies through wormholes and planets gravitating around a black hole, then it's because of the very people our space heroes trusted from the beginning. In the end, among so many things that happen in this film, what we end up seeing is an impressive mix of everything that fiction represents in all its splendor, without any sense of logic as it seemed at the beginning.

Esta es otra cosa que me fascina mucho de esta película y es lo trágico que llega a ser este viaje al espacio. A diferencia de muchas otras películas de este estilo, aquí vemos cómo cada error o decisión que toman los lleva a una cadena de consecuencias sin fin que los harán vivir décadas en tan solo unas cuantas horas. Lo que me gusta de esto es que no nos pinta esta aventura espacial como si fuera un cuento color de rosas, no, sino como algo que nadie en su sano juicio desearía experimentar. Si bien la condición de la humanidad en la Tierra y la necesidad de encontrar un lugar mejor los impulsa a seguir adelante, al final… no todo termina tan bien para nuestros astronautas.

Más allá de esto, otra cosa que me llamó la atención de esta película es la manera tan fácil de ilusionarnos y de luego hacernos sufrir, derrumbando toda esperanza que teníamos con esta misión que vemos realizar Joseph con su equipo de inicio a fin. Si no es por lo terriblemente despiadado que llega a ser el espacio al momento de viajar entre galaxias por agujeros de gusano y planetas gravitando un hoyo negro; entonces es por la misma gente con la que nuestros héroes espaciales confiaban desde el principio. Al final, entre tantas cosas que ocurren en esta película, lo que terminamos viendo es una mezcla impresionante de todo lo que representa la ficción en todo su esplendor, sin ningún sentido de lógica como se veía al principio.

But I still loved it, especially the ending, because even though it leaves you with some questions, it manages to wrap up this great adventure with a simple and joyful "happy ending". Among the many things I love about this movie, I would also like to add how scientifically accurate (or at least close to it) everything we see in this movie is. If I'm not mistaken, Christopher Nolan and his team had a theoretical physicist who served as executive producer and even published a book explaining all the theory behind Interstellar. This is something that, personally, I think every science fiction film director should do. At the very least, they should have a physicist on hand to advise them on certain scientific theories.

Obviously, I'm not saying that this guarantees that everything we see in Interstellar is 100% real, so please don't put words in my mouth. There are scenes and moments, such as the black hole or the wormhole, that are only unrefuted theories from scientists specializing in this area of space. At least that's what I understand, as I can't confirm whether the rest is completely accurate or not, since I'm not a scientist or anything like that. However, in my personal case, it's not necessary to know whether it's accurate or not because, first of all, it's science fiction and not real science; and second, it wouldn't be the first or last time I've seen a movie of this kind.

Pero aún así me encantó, sobre todo el final ya que es un desenlace que, si bien te deja con ciertas dudas, logra cerrar todo esta gran aventura con un simple y alegre “final feliz”. De las tantas cosas que me encanta de esta película, también me gustaría agregar lo científicamente exacto (o al menos aproximadamente cerca de serlo) que es todo lo que vemos en esta película. Si no me equivoco, Christopher Nolan y su equipo contó con un físico teórico que les sirvió como productor ejecutivo y hasta sacó un libro donde explica toda la teoría que hay detrás de Interstellar. Esto es algo que, personalmente, considero que todo director de películas de ciencia ficción debería de hacer. Al menos, contar con un físico que les aconseje ciertas teorías científicas.

Obviamente, no digo que con esto aseguramos que todo lo que vemos en Interstellar sea 100% real, por favor, no metan palabras que no escribí aquí. Hay escenas y momentos como lo del hoyo negro o el agujero de gusano que solo son teorías no refutadas de científicos especializados en esta área de lo que es el espacio. Al menos es lo que yo tengo entendido, ya lo demás no puedo confirmar si es completamente exacto o no ya que no soy científico ni nada parecido. Sin embargo, en mi caso personal no hace falta saber si es algo exacto o no ya que, primero que nada, es ciencia ficción y no ciencia real; y segundo, no sería la primera ni la última vez que veo una película de este estilo.

But what makes Interstellar unique and unbeatable in its own right is both its story and its characters, as I already mentioned. Of course, it is also unbeatable in many other aspects, but I consider these first two to be essentially important, since everything else stems from them. From the very first minutes, it's quite natural to empathize with the characters because of their situations and then see everything they experience during their journey into space. Especially Joseph, with whom everyone could surely empathize very well at various points in the film because of his relationship with his beloved daughter Murph.

Likewise, the other characters we see throughout the film are also well developed. Some stand out more than others, but I think the ones that got the most attention are TARS and CASE. Those of you who read my reviews and have seen the film will know who they are and why I say they are the stars of this great film. But beyond giving personality to two rectangular robots, what Christopher Nolan has achieved with this great story is to convey many valuable lessons. For example, leaving someone behind (Newton's Third Law), the consequences of our actions (Murphy's Law), and becoming the ghosts of our successors (Law of Relativity).

Pero lo que hace de Interstellar único e insuperable por sí solo es tanto su historia como también sus personajes, como ya les dije. Claro, también es insuperable en muchos otros aspectos, pero en estos dos primeros considero que son esencialmente importantes ya que de estos parte todo lo demás. Desde los primeros minutos es bastante natural que llegues a empatizar con los personajes debido a sus situaciones para luego ver todo lo que experimentan durante su viaje al espacio. Especialmente Joseph con quien seguramente todo el mundo pudo empatizar muy bien en varios momentos de la película debido a la relación que tiene con su querida hija Murph.

Igualmente, los demás personajes que vemos a lo largo de la película también están bien desarrollados. Algunos llegan a destacarse más que otros, pero considero que los que más atención se llevaron son TARS y CASE. Los que me leen y han visto la película sabrán quiénes son y por qué digo que son los estelares de esta grandiosa película. Pero más allá de darle personalidad a dos robots rectangulares, lo que Christopher Nolan ha conseguido con esta gran historia es transmitirnos muchas lecciones valiosas. Como por ejemplo, la de dejar a alguien atrás (Tercera Ley de Newton), las consecuencias de nuestras acciones (Ley de Murphy) y la de convertirnos en los fantasmas de nuestros sucesores (Ley de la Relatividad).

Last but not least, let's talk about the audiovisual aspect of this masterpiece. Those of us who know about cinema recognize the great work that Christopher Nolan always does in each of his films. But in this case, he gets top marks thanks to the excellent cinematography, photography styles, use of practical visual effects, varied color palette, and impressive settings. It also has its computer-generated effects, such as the third act or the black hole itself. The sound effects in the film are excellent. Especially at certain moments in the film where these sounds perfectly set the mood.

But what makes it special to an unparalleled level is how it uses silence during space travel. There is more than one key scene where the sudden silence before the storm of events that follows can even make your skin crawl. The soundtrack, on the other hand, is an unparalleled marvel that has managed to remain forever in my subconscious since the first time I saw this film until now, thanks to the internet and how popular it still is today, a decade later. It definitely has one of the best soundtracks you can find in a movie today. That's why I recommend this movie to you, even if you've seen it before.

Personally, I give it a well-deserved 10/10 rating in terms of science fiction, drama, and suspense.

Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos ahora del apartado audiovisual que tiene esta obra maestra. Los que sabemos de cine reconocemos el grandioso trabajo que siempre realiza Christopher Nolan en cada una de sus películas. Pero en este caso se lleva la mejor calificación de todas gracias al excelente trabajo de cinematografía, estilos de fotografía, uso de efectos visuales prácticos, paleta de colores variados y escenarios impresionantes. También tiene sus efectos hechos por computadora, como lo es el tercer acto o el mismo hoyo negro. Los efectos de sonido que tiene la película son excelentes a más no poder. Sobre todo en ciertos momentos de la película donde dichos sonidos logran ambientar perfectamente el lugar.

Pero lo que hace especial hasta un nivel inigualable es cómo utiliza los silencios durante los viajes por el espacio. Hay más de una escena clave donde el silencio repentino antes de la tormenta de eventos que ocurre después puede llegar a erizarte la piel, incluso. La banda sonora, por otro lado, es una maravilla sin igual que ha conseguido quedarse para siempre en mi subconsciente desde la primera vez que vi esta cinta hasta ahora gracias al internet y a lo popular que aún es ahora, una década después. Definitivamente tiene de las mejores bandas sonoras que se pueden conseguir en una película en la actualidad. Es así como este servidor les recomienda una película que tienen que ver, aún si ya la han visto antes.

Personalmente, le doy una muy merecida calificación de 10/10 en lo que respecta al género de la ciencia ficción, el drama y el suspenso.
