Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) | Nattosheru Review [ENG/SPA]

If I had a dollar for every time I've seen this movie on TV, I would literally have an air conditioner in my room by now. It's very difficult for a movie from the past decade to impress me, leave an impression on me, and hook me as much as this gem has. There was a time back then when everyone was talking about this film. And it's no wonder, since Fury Road was nominated for ten Academy Awards (Oscars), winning six, in addition to other awards and prizes. The film is practically a masterpiece in its entirety, both for its incredible production and for the way it tells a story and develops different characters from various sides in a single two-hour journey (there and back). At a time when science fiction cinema was at its peak, this feature film, packed with action scenes, races, chases, and explosions, achieved more than any other film has ever achieved independently. If you're looking for something entertaining, full of non-stop excitement, then watch this movie.

Before I begin, I would like to clarify that, of all the films in this saga, I have only seen this one in my life. Yes, I have not seen the previous three installments that were released in the 1980s. I mention this because Fury Road seems to be both a sequel and a remake (reboot) of the same. Be that as it may, I personally didn't feel affected by not having seen anything before this tremendous masterpiece, so I don't think it's necessary to do so now as a recommendation, to be honest. The story we see here manages to capture the viewer's attention right from the first few minutes, with a short and precise introduction to what we will see next: a post-apocalyptic and completely dystopian world. We step into the worn, dirt-covered boots of Max, a former highway cop who is now a survivor trying to escape the War Boys. However, he is captured, imprisoned, and marked to become a "blood bag". What happens next with the War Rig led by Imperator Furiosa in the desert of this great Wasteland will be the beginning of a long pursuit for life, freedom, and redemption.

Si me dieran un dólar por cada vez que he visto esta película en la televisión, literalmente ya tendría un aire acondicionado en mi cuarto. Es muy difícil que una película de la década pasada me impacte, impresiones y me enganche demasiado como lo ha hecho esta joya. Hubo una época en aquel entonces en la que todo el mundo hablaba de esta cinta. Y no es de extrañar ya que Fury Road llegó a ser nominada para diez Premios de la Academia (Óscar), de entre los cuales llegó a ganar seis, además de otros galardones y premios aparte. La película es prácticamente una obra maestra en su totalidad, tanto por su increíble producción como también por la forma de contarnos una historia y desarrollar a distintos personajes de varios bandos en un solo viaje (de ida y vuelta) de dos horas de duración. En una época en la que el cine de ciencia ficción estaba en su punto máximo, este largometraje repleto de escenas de acción, carreras, persecuciones y explosiones logró más de lo que cualquier otra película ha llegado a conseguir de forma independiente. Si buscas algo entretenido, repleto de emoción sin parar, entonces mírate esta película.

Antes de empezar quisiera aclararles que, de entre todas las películas que hay de esta saga, solo me he visto esta nomás en mi vida. Si, no he visto las anteriores tres entregas que se estrenaron el los 80s. Digo esto ya que Fury Road parece ser tanto una secuela como también un remake (reinicio) de la misma. Sea como sea, personalmente no me sentí afectado por no haber visto nada antes de esta tremenda obra maestra, así que no creo que sea necesario hacerlo ahora como recomendación, la verdad. La historia que vemos aquí consigue captar la atención del espectador justo en sus primeros minutos, con una corta y precisa introducción de lo que veremos a continuación es un mundo post-apocalíptico y completamente distópico. Nos ponemos en los pantalones desgastados y repleto de tierra de Max, un ex-policía de carretera que ahora es un superviviente que intenta escapar de los War Boys. Sin embargo, este es capturado, apresado y marcado para convertirse en un “saco de sangre”. Lo que sucederá después con el War Rig liderado por la Imperator Furiosa en el desierto de este gran Páramo será el inicio de una larga persecución por la vida, la libertad y la redención.

With an easy-to-understand and easy-to-follow plot, this film manages to present us with a parade of madness, chaos, and destruction in a dystopian and completely deserted world. What catches the eye from the beginning is the fast and frenetic pace, where even the characters themselves manage to move and act in an accelerated manner, with no time to think or process what is coming. This is something I haven't seen in any other similar film, which makes it even more striking than it already is at first glance. And I like it that way, because it makes sense to give the film and the characters that pace, given everything we see, as it is literally a race. Another detail that caught my attention is the way this post-apocalyptic world is constructed. The first thing we notice, after the desert, is the Citadel, a place ruled by the powerful Immortal Joe, who has an army of sick people called the War Boys. They, along with the other residents of this place, revere and worship this sick ruler, who gives them only a few seconds of clean water each time he appears.

It is difficult not to compare this character to a dictator, a leader who takes advantage of the needs of others who follow him to work for him. And if that weren't enough, Immortal Joe is revered by these people while posing as a Norse god, or something like that. This way of leading and manipulating others is something we can clearly see in real life with certain characters that I will not mention here. The irony of it all is that the same man who calls himself "immortal" has his fate sealed by being just another sick person in this polluted and radioactive world. That is why his constant attempt and desire to secure a healthy future heir motivates him to imprison, mistreat, and abuse women he calls "wives" and keeps them captive as his objects. Here is another indirect message that the film is leaving us with. When he sees that his five wives have escaped with Furiosa, who is driving the War Rig, he goes after her with his entire mobile army. His power and resources are as comparable as his enormous army, but this story shows us that even the greatest can fall spectacularly.

Con una trama fácil de entender y seguir, esta película consigue presentarnos un desfile de locura, caos y destrucción en un mundo distópico y completamente desértico. Lo que llama la atención desde el principio es el ritmo rápido y frenético que tiene donde hasta los mismos personajes consiguen moverse y actuar de una manera acelerada y sin tiempo para pensar ni procesar lo que se viene. Esto es algo que no he visto en ninguna otra película similar, lo cual llama más la atención de lo que ya lo hace a primera vista. Y me gusta que sea así, ya que tiene hasta sentido que le den dicho ritmo a la película y a los personajes por todo lo que vemos, siendo literalmente una carrera. Otro detalle que me llamó mucho la atención es la forma en la que este mundo post-apocalíptico está hecho. Lo primero que notamos, luego del desierto, es la Ciudadela, un lugar donde gobierna el poderoso Inmortal Joe, quien tiene un ejército de enfermos llamados los War Boys. Estos, junto con los demás residentes de este lugar veneran y adoran a este enfermo gobernante, quien les da solo unos segundos de agua limpia cada vez que aparece.

Es difícil no comparar este personaje con un dictador, un líder que se aprovecha de las necesidades de los demás que le siguen para que trabajen para él. Y por si fuera poco, Inmortal Joe es venerado por esta gente mientras se hace pasar por un dios nórdico, o algo así. Esta forma de liderar y manipular a los demás es algo que claramente podemos ver nosotros en la vida real con ciertos personajes que mejor no mencionaré aquí. Lo irónico de todo esto es que, el mismo hombre que se hace llamar “inmortal” tiene su destino sellado por ser un enfermo más en este mundo contaminado y radioactivo. Es por eso que su constante intento y afán de conseguir un futuro heredero sano lo motiva a querer aprisionar, maltratar y abusar de mujeres que llama “esposas” y las mantiene cautivas como sus objetos. He aquí otro mensaje indirecto que nos está dejando la película. Al ver que sus cinco esposas escapan con Furiosa, quien va manejando el War Rig, va de una con todo su ejército móvil a buscarla. Su poder y recursos son igual de equiparables que su enorme ejército, pero esta historia nos muestra que hasta los más grandes pueden caer de una forma estrepitosa.

There are many things to say about this film, such as the modified cars, the equipment, the Nordic influence on the War Boys and their supposed immortal leader, or the deserted and polluted world in which all this takes place. But what caught my attention the most is how this world came to be this dystopia. Completely ignoring what is shown in the first three installments prior to this film, I will talk about how humanity itself has caused the destruction of this world. A fate far more potential than any other future we have seen before in other science fiction films. There is no worse enemy than human beings themselves; the creators of the atomic bomb, the cause of global warming, deforestation, and wars around the world. All of this, multiplied by a thousand, is what caused the post-apocalyptic world we see in this film to exist. A world in which humanity has descended into total madness. A future where man kills man for pleasure, necessity, and entertainment while radiation victims roam the world.

Of course, since what we see in this film is only what happens on the road, no one knows what can be seen in another plane or place in this world. Nevertheless, all of this is made visible in this two-hour feature film. Here, people are only looking to satisfy their basic needs and survive as long as possible, which is why there are characters like Immortal Joe who take advantage of this to dominate and have all the resources at their disposal. This is where the protagonists appear, those who will turn all this around and show a different path to what people are destined to follow in this chaotic world. Max and Furiosa are a duo that you don't often find in action movies like this. A fugitive who had everything taken from him and now finds himself as a "blood bag" for a War Boy, and a member of Immortal Joe's army who has been forced to serve him since she was young. Both find themselves on this desert road to join forces and fight the great evil that pursues them.

Se puede decir muchas cosas que tiene esta película, como lo son los autos modificados, los equipos, la influencia nórdica en los War Boys y su supuesto líder inmortal o el mismo mundo desértico y contaminado en el que sucede todo esto. Pero lo que más me llamó la atención es el cómo este mundo llegó a convertirse en esta distopía. Ignorando por completo lo que se muestra en las tres primeras entregas anteriores a esta película, hablaré sobre cómo la misma humanidad ha causado la destrucción de este mundo. Un destino mucho más potencial que cualquier otro futuro que hemos visto antes en otras películas de ciencia ficción. Y es que no hay peor enemigo que el mismo ser humano; el creador de la bomba atómica, el causante del calentamiento global, la deforestación y las guerras en todo el mundo. Todo esto, multiplicado por mil es lo que causó que este mundo post-apocalíptico que vemos en esta película existiera. Un mundo en el que la humanidad ha descendido en la locura máxima total. Un futuro donde el hombre asesina al hombre por placer, necesidad y entretenimiento mientras enfermos de radiación vagan por el mundo.

Claro, como lo que vemos en esta película es solamente lo que sucede en la carretera, nadie sabe lo que se puede llegar a ver en otro plano o lugar de este mundo. Igualmente, todo esto mencionado se hace visible en este largometraje de dos horas de duración. Aquí la gente solo busca saciar sus necesidades básicas y sobrevivir lo más que pueda, es por eso que existen personajes como Inmortal Joe quien se aprovecha de esto para dominar y tener todo los recursos a su alcance. Es aquí donde aparecen los protagonistas, esos que le darán la vuelta a todo esto y mostrarán un camino diferente a lo que la gente está destinada a seguir en este mundo caótico. Max y Furiosa son una dupla que no se pueden encontrar muy seguido en películas de acción como esta. Un fugitivo que le arrebataron todo y ahora se encuentra como un “saco de sangre” para un War Boy y una miembro del ejército de Inmortal Joe que ha sido obligada a servirle desde joven. Ambos se encuentran en esta carretera desértica para unir fuerzas y combatir con el gran mal que los persigue.

When it comes to car races and chases, Fast and Furious is the only thing that comes to mind, but after seeing this movie almost a decade ago, I can't help but compare both franchises and their fixation on modified cars. Of course, there is a noticeable difference in the aesthetics and design of both cases. In Fury Road, for example, we see a whole parade of cars, trucks, and vans of all kinds with a rustic, old-fashioned style, ready to be scrapped. This mix of chase scenes with action, drama, and cars is fantastic, and the fact that it's such a big part of the movie itself makes it more engaging than usual. What sets this masterpiece apart from failed imitations such as Waterworld (in addition to having better production, better story, and better character development) is that Fury Road is a single round trip. It has its fast pace, but it is well used, with moments of action and others of development, dramatic scenes, and a flawless ending. In addition, I consider the third act and the ending of this film to be the best I have seen to date.

Another thing I really like about this film is the way it develops its characters. Starting with the mad Max, he is shown to us as a survivor who has been alone until he was imprisoned and used as a blood bag. At first, we see him trying to survive and escape at all costs, confronting whoever stands in his way. But after a while, we see how he develops a certain relationship with Furiosa and the girls she carries in the War Rig. Perhaps it is because of their loss or because both sides have a lot in common as people who have been trying to escape all this time in order to survive, but the end of the film is a sign of redemption for them and for all of us who saw them fight against Immortal Joe. On the other hand, we have Furiosa, a female character who serves as the perfect example of strength, courage, and redemption. A character who has been imprisoned and used for war in this chaotic world at the hands of a crazy and sick tyrant. Her attempt to escape and later fight Joe is a sign of what many of us have come to do in our lives.

Cuando se trata de carreras de autos y persecuciones solo se me viene a la cabeza Rápidos y Furiosos, pero luego de ver esta película hace casi una década atrás no puedo hacer otra cosa que comparar ambas franquicias y sus fijaciones por los autos modificados. Claro, hay una diferencia notable en la estética y el diseño de ambos casos. En Fury Road podemos ver, por ejemplo, un desfile entero de autos, camiones y camionetas de todo tipo con un estilo rústico, antiguo y listo para convertirse en chatarra. Esta mezcla de persecución con acción, drama y autos es fantástica y que esto sea gran parte de la película en sí logra enganchar más al espectador de lo normal. Lo que diferencia a esta obra maestra de fracasos de imitación como lo fue Waterworld (además de tener una mejor producción, mejor historia y mejor desarrollo de personajes) es que Fury Road es un solo viaje de ida y vuelta. Tiene su ritmo acelerado, pero bien utilizado, sus momentos de acción y otros de desarrollo, sus escenas dramáticas y un desenlace impecable. Además, considero que el tercer acto y el final de esta cinta es lo mejor que se ha podido ver hasta la fecha.

Otra cosa que me gusta mucho de esta película es la forma de desarrollar a sus personajes. Empezando por el loco Max, se nos muestra como un superviviente que ha estado solo hasta que fue aprisionado y usado como saco de sangre. Al principio lo vemos intentando sobrevivir y escapar como dé lugar enfrentándose a quien sea que tenga enfrente. Pero luego de cierto tiempo notamos cómo desarrolla cierta relación con Furiosa y con las chicas que lleva en el War Rig. Tal vez sea por la pérdida o porque ambos lados tienen mucho en común al ser personas que han intentado huir todo este tiempo para sobrevivir, pero el final de la película es una muestra de redención para ellos y para todos los que los vimos luchar contra el Inmortal Joe. Por otro lado tenemos a Furiosa, un personaje femenino que sirve como ejemplo perfecto de fuerza, valor y redención. Un personaje que ha sido aprisionado y utilizado para la guerra en este caótico mundo a manos de un tirano loco y enfermo. Su intento de escapar y posteriormente luchar contra Joe es señal de lo que muchos hemos llegado a hacer en nuestras vidas.

In one way or another, this film has some very good lessons for us. In the case of Furiosa, for example, we have that search for freedom, redemption, and that place where we believed we were happy. When we face reality, the present, we realize that things are not as we imagined them to be. And when we see that there is no hope in a world plagued by chaos and madness, there is no other option but to face our fears and fight to the end, giving everything we have to get what we want. Like this, there are other lessons we can learn from this film that can be useful to us. But, of course, what many of us will seek in the first instance is to be entertained by an endless sequence of action, racing, and pursuit that is still worth watching. It is ironic that one of the most action-packed and entertaining films on an audiovisual level has this kind of message and lesson when you look a little closer. That is why I consider this film to be a masterpiece that has been redefining itself over the decades.

Last but not least, let's talk about the technical and visual aspects of this film. It is one of the best-produced films I have ever seen in my life, to be honest. From the beginning, we notice those details that stand out and make this work unique in its style. Starting with the fast and frenetic pace of the action and chase scenes, the different camera angles in the second and third person, the mix of sounds with movements, changes, and 360-degree turns. The style of photography, the warm color palette during the day and cool colors at night, the makeup, and the excellent use of practical effects throughout the film. Even the design of the different types of cars we see stand out, as if it were a parade of underworld races. The soundtrack is wonderful, an excellent combination of percussion with fast and strong melodies. Sounds of drums and electric guitars that we can even see in the film itself. The euphoria and excitement generated by this soundtrack is one of the best things about this film, along with its visuals. This is a letter to the seventh art, to chaos and action.

Personally, I give it a well-deserved 10/10 rating in terms of the action and science fiction genre.

De una forma u otra, esta película tiene muy buenas lecciones para nosotros. Con el caso de Furiosa, por ejemplo, tenemos esa búsqueda de la libertad, la redención y ese lugar donde creímos que éramos felices. Al enfrentar la realidad, el presente, nos damos cuenta de que las cosas no son como nos lo imaginamos. Y cuando vemos que no hay esperanza en un mundo plagado de caos y locura, no hay otra opción que enfrentar nuestros temores y luchar hasta el final dándolo todo para conseguir lo que queremos. Como esta, hay otras lecciones que podemos sacar de esta película que nos puede servir. Pero, claro, lo que muchos buscaremos a primera instancia es entretenernos con una secuencia interminable de acción, carreras y persecución que vale la pena ver, igual. Es irónico que de una de las películas más repletas de acción y entretenimiento a nivel audiovisual posea este tipo de mensajes y lecciones con solo acercar un poco la lupa. Es por eso que considero a esta película como una obra maestra que se va redefiniendo con el paso de las décadas.

Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos del apartado técnico y visual que tiene esta película. De las cintas mejores producidas que he visto en toda mi vida, la verdad. Desde el principio notamos esos detalles que resaltan y hacen de esta obra única en su estilo. Empezando por el ritmo rápido y frenético que tiene las escenas de acción y persecución, los distintos planos de las cámaras en segunda y tercera persona, la mezcla de sonidos con movimientos, cambios y giros de 360 grados. El estilo de fotografía, la paleta de colores cálidos de día y fríos de noche, el maquillaje y el excelente uso de efectos prácticos en toda la película. Hasta el diseño de los distintos tipos de auto que vemos resaltan también como si fuera un desfile de carreras del bajo mundo. La banda sonora es una maravilla, siendo una excelente combinación de percusiones con melodías rápidas y fuertes. Sonidos de tambores y guitarras eléctricas que hasta en la misma película podemos ver. La euforia y emoción que genera dicha banda sonora es de lo mejor que tiene esta película, junto con su apartado visual. Esta es una carta dirigida al séptimo arte, al caos y a la acción.

Personalmente, le doy una merecida calificación de 10/10 en lo que respecta al género de acción y ciencia ficción.
