We entered the new millennium with another big hit that, with time and reaction, has become another unforgettable classic of american comedy. Jim Carrey makes his appearance again, with a new character very different from what we have seen on the big screen so far. Me, Myself & Irene is a film that, from the outset, is clearly not for all audiences. This is mainly due to its dark humor, which can be offensive to many. Not content with this, the film also has some fairly explicit scenes that are not suitable for family viewing.

Even so, here we are, talking about this comedy classic because of how funny and nostalgic it is for me. Because yes, despite not being for children, I watched this movie a lot when I was a preteen. As I've mentioned before, I wasn't one of those kids who had a certain amount of supervision when watching movies, apparently. But the fact is that because of these types of movies, my sense of humor has been corrupted ever since. Yes, those scenes in this movie that are so memorable today are, in my opinion, the most hilarious and entertaining. Maybe you who are reading this now don't think the same, but this type of humor makes me laugh too.

Llegamos al nuevo milenio con otro gran éxito que, con el tiempo y las reacciones, se ha convertido en otro clásico inolvidable de la comedia americana. Jim Carrey hace su aparición de nuevo, con un nuevo personaje muy distinto a lo que hemos llegado a ver en la pantalla grande hasta el momento. Me, Myself & Irene es una película que, desde el principio ya se puede notar que no es para todo tipo de públicos. Esto se debe más que nada a su estilo de humor negro que posee, el cual puede llegar a ser ofensivo para muchos, inclusive. No contentos con esto, la cinta también posee ciertas escenas bastante explícitas que no es bueno para verla con la familia.

Aún así, aquí estamos, hablando de este clásico de la comedia debido a lo divertida y nostálgica que es para mí. Porque sí, a pesar de no ser para niños, esta película la veía mucho cuando era preadolescente. Como ya les he comentado antes, no era de los que tenía cierta supervisión cuando pequeño al momento de ver películas, al parecer. Pero el hecho es que debido a este tipo de películas es que mi sentido del humor ha llegado a corromperse desde entonces. Si, esas escenas que tiene esta película y que son muy recordadas en la actualidad son de lo más delirante y divertido a mí parecer, la verdad. Tal vez no piensen lo mismo ustedes que me están leyendo ahora, pero este tipo de humor me da risa también.

Of course, there are certain limits that this film sometimes exceeds, which I don't like at all, but this does not detract from how entertaining it is overall. Just watching the first half hour of the film is enough to give you a good idea of what the rest of the nearly two-hour feature film is about. It's true that I said earlier that just watching the first 15 or 20 minutes is enough to know whether a movie is good or not, but a curious case with Me, Myself & Irene is what happens from minute 19 onwards. This can be classified as one of the best scenes I've ever seen in a comedy movie in my life.

Of course, I recognize its dark humor and suggestive jokes, but Jim Carrey's performance is simply unbeatable. The film itself helps make all this happen, as if it were the dénouement or hook that changes everything we see from the first minute to this moment in the story. Imagine being a veteran law enforcement officer who is deceived by his own partner, who falls in love with a dark-skinned dwarf with whom she has triplets, and soon after leaves you alone and abandoned with the children. All of this causes your image as a respected police officer in the city to collapse, as you are ignored and then become a laughing stock for everyone.

Claro, hay ciertos límites que esta película sobrepasa a veces y que no me agrada para nada, pero esto no le resta importancia a lo entretenida que es en general. Con solo ver la primera media hora de película es suficiente para que conozcas muy bien de qué trata el resto del largometraje de casi dos horas. Si es cierto que antes dije que con solo ver los 15 o 20 minutos era suficiente para saber si es buena una película o no, pero un caso curioso de Me, Myself & Irene es lo que sucede justo en el minuto 19 en adelante. Esto puede clasificarse como una de las mejores escenas que he visto en una película de comedia en mi vida.

Claro, reconozco su humor negro y los chistes sugerentes que posee, pero la actuación que hace Jim Carrey es simplemente insuperable. Y es que la película misma ayuda a que todo esto llegue a suceder, como si fuera el desenlace o enganche que cambia todo lo que vemos desde el primer minuto hasta este momento de la historia. Imagínate ser un veterano de la ley que es engañado por su propia pareja quien se enamora de un enano moreno con quien tiene trillizos y poco después te deja solo y abandonado con los pequeños. Todo esto hace que la imagen de policía respetado que tienes en la ciudad se derrumbe, siendo ignorado y convertido después en una burla para todo el mundo.

This is why we see our friendly and humble Charlie end up exploding, becoming someone he is not really, a completely different and free person. What better way to stay and watch this movie than by witnessing Hank's appearance with Jim Carrey's funny and impressive performance? It's no wonder that this same scene is currently remembered by many as one of the best performances Carrey has given in his entire career. What happens next is quite an adventure where we see our troubled Charlie get caught up in an important legal case involving dangerous people.

This mix of dark humor with criminals, detectives, and corrupt cops in search of a couple with personal and mental problems is quite fascinating. Not only because of how funny it is, but also because of how the script and characters are written to allow Jim Carrey to shine with his unique and unsurpassed performance. While it's true that it has many clichés and absurd moments to the point of exhaustion, it's also not one of the best stories I've seen in a comedy film. But in a way, I think I feel somewhat familiar with the situation in which we meet Charlie at the beginning. Obviously, apart from his multiple personality disorder.

Es por esto que podemos ver cómo nuestro amigable y humilde Charlie termina explotando, convirtiéndose en alguien que no es realmente, una persona completamente diferente y libre. ¿Qué mejor manera para que te quedes a ver esta película que presenciando la aparición de Hank con la divertida e impresionante actuación de Jim Carrey? No es de extrañar que esta misma escena sea actualmente tan recordada por muchos como una de las mejores interpretaciones que Carrey ha hecho en toda su carrera. Lo que sucede después es toda una aventura donde veremos a nuestro enfermo Charlie enredarse en un caso importante de la ley donde hay gente peligrosa de por medio.

Esta mezcla de humor negro con criminales, detectives y policías corruptos en busca de una pareja con problemas personales y mentales es bastante fascinante. No solo por lo divertida que es, sino también por cómo el mismo guión y los personajes están hechos para que Jim Carrey se destaque con su actuación única e insuperable. Si es cierto que tiene muchos clichés y momentos absurdos hasta decir basta, tampoco es de las mejores historias que he visto en una película de comedia. Pero de cierto modo creo sentirme hasta en parte familiarizado con la situación en la que conocemos a Charlie al principio. Obviamente, quitando su trastorno de personalidad múltiple.

I'm referring more to Charlie's habit of repressing his emotions and seeing the positive side of everything that happens in his life. While this may sound positive at first, over time it can cause stomach ulcers. Really, that anger and hatred that is constantly repressed can turn into something worse over time, as if you were leaving cheese to age over the years. I'm not good with comparisons, but I imagine you know what I mean by all this. This film is an example of this, as we see our protagonist facing a problem much bigger and more complex than he imagines, only to escape and try to get away from it all.

This is how Hank appears and dares to do what Charlie does not, deciding to face the problem and looking for a solution to what is happening without fear or concern. It is true that this guy has serious problems when it comes to dealing with people, especially women, but apart from this, he can be recognized as a brave and determined person when required. Sometimes doubt and lack of courage make us back down when making a decision, whether it is important or not. But if we don't dare to take a step forward, we will never know if what happens next will be good or not. Another important thing is to know how to express our emotions and not repress ourselves as Charlie did at first.

Me refiero más a ese hábito que tiene Charlie de reprimir sus emociones y verle el lado positivo a todo lo que le sucede en la vida. Si bien esto puede sonar positivo al principio, con el tiempo esto puede causar hasta úlceras en tu estómago. De verdad, esa ira y odio que es reprimida constantemente puede transformarse en algo peor con el tiempo, como si dejaras un queso añejarse con los años. No soy bueno con las comparaciones, pero me imagino que saben a lo que me refiero con todo esto. Esta película es un ejemplo de ello al ver a nuestro protagonista afrontar un problema mucho más grande y complejo de lo que se imagina para solo escapar y buscar alejarse de todo.

Es así como Hank aparece y se atreve a hacer lo que Charlie no, decidiendo afrontar el problema y buscando alguna solución a lo que ocurre sin miedo ni preocupaciones. Si es cierto que este tipo tiene sus problemas serios al momento de tratar con la gente, sobre todo con las mujeres, pero aparte de esto se puede reconocer que es una persona valiente y decidida cuando se requiere. A veces la duda y la falta de valor nos hace retroceder al momento de tomar una decisión, sea esta importante o no. Pero si no nos atrevemos a dar un paso adelante no sabremos en realidad si lo que sucederá después será bueno o no. Otra cosa importante es saber expresar nuestras emociones y no reprimir nada como lo hacía Charlie al principio.

No one wants a Hank to take over our body and make us do dangerous and embarrassing things out of fear of doing certain things or because we don't have enough courage. Obviously, this doesn't happen exactly like this in real life, and certainly not as we see it in this movie, but you understand what it means, right? We may not be idiots who let ourselves be intimidated or who let people take advantage of our kindness, but there are times when it's right to say NO and demand respect, even if it's hard for us, to be honest. I don't consider myself the perfect example to talk to you about demanding respect, but at least I try.

On the other hand, the cast of this movie is not bad at all. Starting with the actress who plays Irene, I think she can shine at one point or another. Clearly, with the amount of jokes and inappropriate scenes in this movie, it's hard to see this character as the main target of any sexual or suggestive jokes. There are also Charlie's children, who stand out for obvious reasons, not to mention their way of speaking and the recurring jokes they make. Here in this film, you'll find many suggestive jokes and gags, so I hope you're used to watching this type of film, if you decide to give it a chance in the end.

Nadie quiere que un Hank se apodere de nuestro cuerpo y nos haga hacer cosas peligrosas y vergonzosas por temor a hacer ciertas cosas o por no tener el valor suficiente. Obviamente, esto en la vida real no sucede exactamente así y menos como lo podemos ver en esta película, pero se comprende lo que se quiere decir con todo esto, ¿no? Puede que no seamos unos idiotas que nos dejemos intimidar o que la gente se aproveche siempre de nuestra amabilidad, pero sí hay momentos en los que es correcto decir NO y darse a respetar aunque nos cueste, la verdad. No me considero el ejemplo perfecto para hablarles de darse a respetar, pero al menos hago mi esfuerzo.

Por otro lado, el elenco que tiene esta película no está nada mal. Empezando por la que hace el papel de Irene creo que puede llegar a lucirse en un momento u otro. Claramente, con la cantidad de chistes y escenas indebidas que tiene esta película es difícil ver a este personaje como el objetivo principal de cualquier broma sexual o sugerente. También están los hijos de Charlie quienes se destacan por obvias razones, sin mencionar sus formas de hablar y los chistes recurrentes que hacen. Aquí en esta película te vas a encontrar con muchas bromas y chistes sugerentes, así que espero que estés acostumbrado a ver este tipo de películas, si es que piensas darle una oportunidad al final.

Obviously, we mustn't overlook Jim Carrey's great acting and performance in this film. Both as Charlie and Hank, Carrey does a remarkable job thanks to his creative and original way of stepping into the shoes of two completely different personalities. At first, the change is quite noticeable, which is why it catches our attention, but it's also true that throughout the film we see a remarkable development in these two characters. This is especially true for Charlie after spending time with Irene on the run and in hiding. It may not be one of his best roles, but it is certainly one of his most notable.

Last but not least, let's talk about the audiovisual aspects of Me, Myself & Irene. With the same directors who made Dumb and Dumber at the helm, it's clear that we're looking at a decent level of quality. More than anything else, the cinematography, color palette, shots, sequences, and practical effects are quite enjoyable. Let's just say that this movie has aged well, as it has scenes and moments that are still well remembered today. This is thanks not only to the visuals, but also to the sound effects and soundtrack. Especially that iconic song that plays in the background when Hank appears. Anyway, here's another Jim Carrey movie that I recommend watching, but only if you like his brand of dark humor.

Personally, I give it a 9/10 in terms of the comedy genre.

Obviamente, no hay que dejar de lado el gran trabajo de actuación e interpretación que hace Jim Carrey en esta película. Tanto con Charlie como con Hank, Carrey hace un trabajo bastante admirable debido a la manera tan creativa y original de ponerse en los zapatos de dos personalidades completamente diferentes entre sí. Al principio se nota bastante el cambio y es por eso que llama la atención, pero también es cierto que a lo largo de la película vemos un notable desarrollo en estos dos personajes. Más que nada en Charlie luego de pasar tiempo con Irene huyendo y escondiéndose. Puede que no sea de sus mejores papeles, pero sí es de los más notables que tiene.

Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos ahora del apartado audiovisual que tiene Me, Myself & Irene. Con la dirección de los mismos que hicieron Dumb and Dumber, es evidente que veamos un nivel decente de calidad. Más que nada en lo que respecta a fotografía, paleta de colores, planos, secuencias y efectos prácticos se puede disfrutar bastante. Digamos que esta película envejeció bien ya que tiene escenas y momentos que son muy recordados en la actualidad. Esto es gracias, no solo a lo visual, sino también a los efectos de sonido y la banda sonora que tiene. Sobre todo a esa icónica canción que suena de fondo cuando Hank aparece. En fin, aquí tienen otra película de Jim Carrey que les recomiendo ver, solo si les gusta el humor negro que tiene.

Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 9/10 en lo que respecta al género de comedia.
