Mr. Popper's Penguins (2011) | Nattosheru Review [ENG/SPA]

Without exaggerating, I think this is the most "modern" Jim Carrey movie I've seen. After Mr. Popper's Penguins, I haven't seen any of his latest starring roles to date. It's not that he's been in many movies over the last decade, to be honest. And that's a bit sad because I'm a big fan of Jim's talent for acting and making people laugh, but oh well. Interestingly, in the case of this movie I'm bringing you today, many people didn't find it as entertaining as they expected (I don't know what the heck they expected from an adaptation of a children's story, to be honest), compared to his previous work.

Honestly, I've only seen this movie a couple of times in my life, but I don't think it's as bad as many people say. Clearly, it's not a comedy classic like the movies that made Jim Carrey famous in the late 90s. But we must also recognize that both its story and its characters are quite impactful, as well as being very entertaining, especially if you like penguins. We don't see Jim Carrey at his most lunatic or witty here, but we do get to know his character very personally after getting to know him well.

Sin exagerar, creo que esta es la película más “moderna” que he visto de Jim Carrey. Después de Mr. Popper's Penguins, no llegué a ver más nada de sus últimos trabajos protagónicos hasta la fecha de hoy. Tampoco es que haya llegado a participar mucho en películas durante esta última década, la verdad. Y esto es un poco triste ya que soy muy fan del talento que tiene Jim para actuar y hacer reír a la gente, pero bueno. Curiosamente en el caso de esta película que les traigo hoy, a muchos no les ha parecido tan entretenida como esperaban (no sé qué rayos esperaban de una adaptación de un cuento para niños, la verdad), en comparación con trabajos anteriores.

Honestamente no llegué a ver esta película más de un par de veces en mi vida, pero tampoco pienso que sea tan mala como muchos opinan. Claramente no es un gran clásico de la comedia como las películas que llevaron a Jim Carrey a la fama a finales de los 90s. Pero también hay que reconocer que tanto su historia como sus personajes llegan a impactar bastante, además de ser muy entretenida y más si te gustan los pingüinos. No vemos a un Jim Carrey tan lunático ni ocurrente aquí, pero sí podemos llegar a familiarizarnos muy personalmente con su papel luego de conocerlo bien.

What definitely stands out most are the penguins, who steal much of the limelight in the film. But the best part is how they interact with our protagonist, Tom Pepper Jr., from beginning to end. After learning of his father's death, Tom accepts the "souvenir" his father left behind. Instead of receiving property or money, what arrives at his apartment door is a box with a frozen penguin inside. Thinking it is fake, he leaves it in the room, but suddenly turns away and gets distracted for a moment, and when he looks back, it has disappeared.

Yes, he sent him a real penguin from Antarctica itself. But the curious thing about this is that it is not an ordinary penguin, but seems to be somewhat special and a little more intelligent than others of its species. The worst part is not this, but that due to a small misunderstanding, Tom will receive more souvenirs from Antarctica. The interesting thing about all this is how the film constantly shows us hints and hidden (and not so hidden) messages about family as its main theme. Having had a father who was mostly absent for much of his childhood, our protagonist does not know how to be a good father throughout the story.

Lo que llama más la atención definitivamente son los pingüinos, siendo estos los que se llevan gran parte del protagonismo en la película. Pero lo mejor es cómo estos llegan a relacionarse con nuestro protagonista, Tom Pepper Jr. de principio a fin. Luego de la noticia del fallecimiento de su padre, Tom acepta el “souvenir" de su padre en su lecho de muerte. En vez de recibir alguna propiedad o dinero, lo que le llega en la puerta de su departamento es una caja con un pingüino congelado adentro. Pensado que es falso, lo deja en la estancia, pero de repente gira y se distrae un rato y, al verlo de nuevo, este desaparece.

Si, le envió un pingüino real de la mismísima Antártida. Pero lo curioso de esto es que no es un pingüino común y corriente, sino que parece ser un tanto especial y un poco más inteligente que los de su propia especie. Lo peor no es esto, sino que por un pequeño error de comprensión, Tom recibirá más souvenires de la Antártida. Lo interesante de todo esto es cómo la película constantemente nos muestra indirectas y mensajes ocultos (y no tan ocultos) sobre la familia como su tema principal. Al haber tenido a un padre que mayormente estaba ausente en gran parte de su infancia, nuestro protagonista no sabe cómo ser un buen padre a lo largo de la historia.

At first, we see that he tries to be there for his two children, Janie and Billy, even though he is divorced from their mother. However, despite being present, he fails to gain his children's trust, especially that of his eldest daughter, who says she doesn't pay attention when he talks to her about her problems at school. Devoting himself solely to his work, we see that Tom doesn't have a very active social life. He prefers to be alone in his huge apartment, but after receiving the souvenir from his father, that peace and quiet disappear completely.

The penguins are not just a simple means to keep you watching the movie, but they also have a hidden message in how they are and how they act with our protagonist. Upon receiving them, Tom becomes their father figure or leader of the pack or group. Despite being intense animals, they have limited intelligence, although at times they just seem clumsy. Of course, this is part of the somewhat childish humor we see throughout the film, but that's not all these penguins are good for. Believe it or not, they also teach us what it means to have a family.

Al principio vemos que intenta estar ahí presente para sus dos hijos, Janie y Billy, aún cuando él se encuentra divorciado de su madre. Sin embargo, a pesar de estar presente, este no logra ganarse la confianza de sus hijos, sobre todo de la mayor quien dice no prestarle atención cuando le habla de sus problemas en la escuela. Al dedicarse únicamente a su trabajo, vemos que Tom no tiene una vida social muy activa que digamos. Prefiere estar solo en su enorme apartamento, pero luego de recibir el souvenir de su padre, esa paz y tranquilidad desaparecen por completo.

Los pingüinos no solo son un simple medio para hacer que te quedes a ver la película nomás, sino que también poseen un mensaje oculto entre cómo son y cómo actúan con nuestro protagonista. Al recibirlos, Tom se convierte en su figura paterna o líder de la manada o grupo. A pesar de ser animales intensivos, poseen corta inteligencia, aunque a veces pareciera que son simplemente torpes nomás. Claro, en esto radica parte del humor un tanto infantil que vemos a lo largo de esta película, pero no solo para eso es que sirven estos pingüinos. Aunque no lo creas, también nos enseñan lo que es tener una familia.

As generic as this may sound, it is entirely understandable that these penguins are used as familiar figures to identify certain points between Tom, his children, and his ex-wife. As a divided family, it is understandable that there are differences and problems. The mistrust that they have towards our protagonist is also well-founded. But even so, the time they spend together with the penguins shows us that, despite their problems and differences, they are still a family. The message at the end is clear, but it doesn't need to be stated directly as that would spoil the idea of watching the film.

I like how they manage to blend these themes very well with the penguins, their nature, and how they relate to and live with Tom and his family. Apart from learning several things about caring for these animals, we can also see how the emotions and interests between the protagonist and the other characters are reflected. Tom, in particular, undergoes quite an admirable development, although it is also a little unfortunate because of the way he makes certain decisions. However, we must understand that when things don't go well, no matter how hard you try, it is very discouraging.

Por muy genérico que suene esto, es totalmente comprensible que utilicen a estos pingüinos como figuras familiares para identificar ciertos puntos entre Tom, sus hijos y su ex-esposa. Al ser una familia dividida, es entendible que haya diferencias y problemas. La desconfianza que estos le tienen a nuestro protagonista está muy bien fundamentada también. Pero aun así el tiempo que pasan juntos con los pingüinos nos muestra que, aún con los problemas y las diferencias que hayan, siguen siendo una familia. El mensaje al final es claro, no hay que decirlo directamente ya que eso arruinaría la idea de ver la película.

Me gusta que consigan mezclar muy bien estos temas con los pingüinos, su naturaleza y forma de relacionarse y vivir con Tom y su familia. Aparte de aprender varias cosas sobre el cuidado de estos animales, también podemos ver cómo se reflejan tanto las emociones como los intereses que hay entre el protagonista y los demás personajes. Principalmente Tom pasa por un desarrollo bastante admirable, aunque también un poco lamentable por la manera en la que toma ciertas decisiones. Sin embargo, hay que comprender que cuando las cosas no salen bien, sin importar el esfuerzo, esto desanima muchísimo.

This film not only shows us funny scenes with Jim Carrey trying to live a "normal" life with six penguins in his apartment, but we also learn several important lessons about family, responsibility, and trust. This story teaches us to sometimes be quiet and listen before speaking, to take advantage of every opportunity we have with our family, and not to abandon everything after going through a difficult loss. But most importantly, it teaches us to always do the right thing and think not only about ourselves but also about our loved ones.

Last but not least, let's talk about the audiovisual aspect of Mr. Popper's Penguins. For a little-known director, I think this movie is not bad at all, especially considering it's about a group of penguins living in a businessman's apartment. The cinematography, the shots, the views of New York City, and the cool color palette are all excellent. But where the film really stands out is in its CGI, because those penguins aren't entirely real, or at least I don't think so. The sound effects aren't bad either, but the highlight is the soundtrack. Anyway, here's this Jim Carrey film that you might like.

Personally, I give it a rating of 8.5/10 in terms of the comedy genre.

Esta película no solo nos muestra escenas graciosas con Jim Carrey tratando de vivir una vida “normal” con seis pingüinos en su apartamento; sino que también veremos varias lecciones importantes sobre la familia, las responsabilidades y la confianza. Esta historia nos enseña a callar a veces y escuchar antes de hablar, a aprovechar cada oportunidad que tenemos con la familia y a no abandonarlo todo después de pasar por una dura pérdida. Pero lo más importante de todo es que nos enseña a hacer lo correcto siempre y pensar no solo en nosotros mismos sino también en nuestro seres queridos.

Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos sobre el apartado audiovisual de Mr. Popper's Penguins. Para tener un director poco conocido, considero que esta película no está para nada mal; sobre todo al tratarse de un grupo de pingüinos viviendo en el apartamento de un empresario. Tanto la fotografía como los planos, las vistas de la ciudad de Nueva York y la paleta de colores fríos son excelentes. Pero en lo que más se destaca la película es en su CGI, porque esos pingüinos no son del todo reales, o al menos eso creo. Los efectos de sonido tampoco están mal, pero lo más destacado es su banda sonora. En fin, aquí les dejo esta película de Jim Carrey que posiblemente les guste.

Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 8.5/10 en lo que respecta al género de la comedia.
