Honestly, you have no idea how long I've wanted to do a Tim Burton movie special. I could tell you that I've wanted to do it since I started writing movie reviews on the internet, but the truth is that, between one thing and another, I kept forgetting about it or putting it off. However, this time I'm not going to let the opportunity pass me by to tell you about all those Tim Burton films that had an impact on me and marked a large part of my life since I was a child. This time we'll start with his directorial debut.

Pee-wee's Big Adventure is a mixture of absurd comedy and adventure that, to be honest, I had forgotten existed for a long time. It wasn't until I reviewed Tim Burton's filmography that I remembered it and, of course, thought of bringing this movie to you as an excellent way to start this great special. Yes, despite having forgotten about it, I do remember seeing it at least a couple of times when I was a kid. And the reason is quite simple because how could I forget such a particularly striking character as Pee-wee Herman?

De verdad, no tienen ni idea de cuánto tiempo he deseado hacer un especial de películas de Tim Burton. Podría decirles que lo deseé hacer desde que empecé con esto de escribir reseñas de películas en internet, pero la verdad es que, entre una cosa y la otra, se me olvidaba o lo posponía para después en cada momento. Sin embargo, esta vez no pienso dejar pasar la oportunidad para hablarles de todas esas películas de Tim Burton que me impactaron y que marcaron gran parte de mi vida desde que era pequeño. En esta ocasión empezamos con el que fue su debut como director.

Pee-wee’s Big Adventure es una mezcla de comedia absurda con aventura que, si les soy sincero, había olvidado que existía desde hace mucho tiempo. No fue sino cuando revisé la filmografía de Tim Burton que la recordé y, cómo no, pensé en traerles esta película a ustedes como una excelente manera de empezar este gran especial. Si, a pesar de haberme olvidado de ella, sí recuerdo haberla visto al menos un par de veces cuando era niño. Y la razón es bastante simple ya que, ¿cómo voy a olvidar un personaje tan particularmente llamativo como lo es Pee-wee Herman?

But beyond the character himself, what I remember most about this film are certain scenes that, honestly, disturbed me quite a bit. You're probably wondering what on earth this comedy film has that could disturb someone like me. But those who have seen or remember this film will know which scene traumatized me. It was from that moment on that Tim Burton made an impact on my life from such a young age. And it's not surprising that this happened, since those who are very familiar with his great work will know that he has a natural talent for mixing fantasy, humor, and horror in a way that leaves you amazed and disturbed at the same time.

Otherwise, this Pee-wee Herman movie is entertaining, as long as you like this kind of absurd and childish humor. Really, there are scenes, jokes, and dialogues that are impossible not to confuse with an authentic cartoon. Especially in my case, watching it dubbed into Latin American Spanish, which is quite an experience for anyone who knows or has seen SpongeBob SquarePants in their childhood. On the other hand, the plot is as simple and absurd as it gets. In short, what we see is our cheerful and childish protagonist, Pee-wee Herman, traveling across the country to Texas in search of his precious bicycle.

Pero más allá del personaje como tal, lo que no olvido de esta película son ciertas escenas que, honestamente, me llegaron a perturbar bastante. De seguro se preguntarán qué tiene esta película de comedia para llegar a perturbar a alguien como yo. Pero los que han visto o recuerdan esta cinta sabrán qué escena fue la que me traumó. Es a partir de allí que Tim Burton llegó a impactar en mi vida desde tan corta edad. Y no es de extrañar que esto suceda ya que, los que conocen muy bien su grandioso trabajo, sabrán que posee un talento nato de mezclar la fantasía, el humor y el horror de una forma que te quedes maravillado y perturbado al mismo tiempo.

De resto, esta película de Pee-wee Herman es entretenida, siempre y cuando te guste este tipo de humor absurdo e infantil. De verdad, hay escenas, chistes y diálogos que son imposibles no confundirlos con una auténtica caricatura. En especial en mi caso al verla doblada al español latino, lo cual es toda una experiencia para cualquiera que conozca o haya visto Bob Esponja en su infancia. Por otro lado, su trama es de lo más sencillo y a la vez absurdo que tiene para ofrecer también. En resumen, lo que vemos es a nuestro risueño e infantil protagonista, Pee-wee Herman, viajar por todo el país en dirección a Texas en busca de su preciada bicicleta.

At first, you may have many reasons to want to pause it and stop watching because of the way Pee-wee Herman is presented to us. Without giving too many details, the character is basically a man who behaves like a child in the way he talks, acts, and walks. Even when it comes to eating, he is like a child, preparing junk food and eating almost nothing in the end. The protagonist is designed to elicit two types of reactions from the audience: laugh at him for everything he does or hate him for how unbearably childish he is. There is no middle ground in this case, really.

I would understand if this movie were made for a child audience, as that is the only explanation I have for why its characters, especially the protagonist, are so unbearable and immature in many ways. Don't look for logic or meaning in everything you see here. Everything that happens throughout this hour-and-a-half-long film is meant to make you laugh or make you uncomfortable with its many jokes, satires, funny moments, and even embarrassing moments. And I think there's no better example of this than the character of Pee-wee Herman who, because of the way he acts and talks, is very funny to watch as he deals with all kinds of people throughout his journey in search of his bicycle.

Al principio puede que tenga muchas razones para que quieras pausarla y dejar de verla por la forma en la que nos presentan a Pee-wee Herman. Para no darles muchos detalles, el personaje es en resumen un hombre comportándose como todo un infante tanto por su forma de hablar, actuar y caminar. Incluso a la hora de comer es todo un niño al prepararse pura comida chatarra y no comer casi nada al final. El protagonista está hecho para dos tipos de reacciones de parte de la audiencia: reírte de él por todo lo que hace o odiarlo por lo insoportablemente infantil que es. No hay punto medio en este caso, de verdad.

Entendería que esta película está hecha para un público infantil ya que es la única explicación que le tengo al por qué sus personajes, sobre todo su protagonista, son tan insoportables e inmaduros en muchos aspectos. No le busques lógica ni sentido a todo lo que veas aquí. Cada cosa que ocurre a lo largo de esta hora y media de película es para que te rías o te incomodes por tantos chistes, sátiras, momentos graciosos y hasta vergonzosos que tiene. Y creo que no hay mejor ejemplo para esto que con el personaje de Pee-wee Herman quien, por su forma de actuar y hablar, da mucha gracia verlo tratar a gente de todo tipo a lo largo de su viaje en busca de su bicicleta.

The actor who plays this character is the same person who created him, which gives his role an authentic quality because he knows how to make his own character the center of attention throughout the film. The way he does things, how he gets into trouble and gets out of it in an absurd way, is cartoonish. This, reflected in a film with real actors and such a small budget, is something that catches the eye. Of course, I think the discrepancy between it being a film and not a cartoon as such, but at the same time having many references to one, is what causes that confusion, personally.

If it were a cartoon, it would perfectly be SpongeBob SquarePants, and I'm not just saying that because of what I mentioned earlier about its Latin American Spanish dubbing. The plot, the events, the characters, the clichés, and the obvious plot twists in the film make it a true cartoon brought to the big screen with real actors. I think if there's one thing I have to give credit to the creator of this film for, it's his natural way of bringing this kind of absurd and childish humor to life with performances as original as Pee-wee Herman's. On the other hand, I think Tim Burton also helped a lot with his artistic direction.

El actor que interpreta a este personaje es el mismo que lo creó, lo cual le da ese valor auténtico a su papel debido a que sabe cómo hacer de su propio personaje el centro de atención de toda la película. La manera en la que hace las cosas, cómo se mete en problemas y sale de ellas de una forma absurda es de caricatura. Esto, reflejado en una película con actores reales y con tan poco presupuesto es algo que llama la atención. Claro, considero que la discrepancia de que sea una película y no una caricatura como tal, pero que a su vez tiene muchas referencias a una es lo que causa esa confusión, en lo personal.

Si fuera una caricatura, perfectamente sería Bob Esponja y no solo lo digo por lo que mencioné antes sobre su doblaje al español latino. La trama, los eventos, los personajes, los clichés y giros de trama tan evidentes que tiene la película la convierte en una auténtica caricatura llevada a la pantalla grande con actores reales. Creo que si algo debo de atribuirle al creador de esta película es su forma tan natural de llevar este tipo de humor absurdo e infantil a la vida real con interpretaciones tan originales como lo es Pee-wee Herman. Por otro lado, considero que Tim Burton también ayudó mucho gracias a su dirección artística.

But before continuing to talk about Tim Burton and his work on this film, I want to first highlight certain details regarding this film, especially in its final part or arc. The fact that the story ends in such an absurd and yet typical way, as Pee-wee's Big Adventure did, is something that needs to be reconsidered. It's not the first time I've seen an ending like this that even references real life with the case of the franchise itself, but it's interesting how this film incorporates it in such a natural and absurd way at the same time.

Honestly, any other critic or filmmaker of this era would think that this film is ultimately just propaganda to make Warner Bros. Studio, which coincidentally produced it, look good. Really, the number of Easter Eggs at the end with other films and film franchises that are part of the same company is too absurd to watch. And the worst part is the plot twist at the end that wraps everything up in a way that makes no sense at all. But hey, as I said before, there's no point in looking for logic in this film. It's just there for you to watch and enjoy.

Pero antes de seguir hablando de Tim Burton y su trabajo en esta película, quiero destacar primero ciertos detalles en lo que respecta a esta película, sobre todo en su parte o arco final. Que la historia cierre de una forma tan absurda y a la vez tan típica como lo hizo Pee-wee's Big Adventure es algo que hay que reconsiderar bastante. No es la primera vez que veo un final como este que hace referencia incluso a la vida real con el caso de la propia franquicia, pero es interesante cómo esta película la incorpora de forma tan natural y absurda al mismo tiempo.

Sinceramente, siendo cualquier otro crítico o cineasta de esta época pensaría que esta película es al final una simple propaganda para hacer quedar bien a la misma Warner Bros. Studio que, casualmente, es la que la produjo. De verdad, la cantidad de Easter Eggs que tiene al final con otras películas y franquicias cinematográficas que son parte de la misma compañía es demasiado absurdo de ver. Y lo peor es el giro argumental del final que cierra todo de una forma que no tiene sentido alguno. Pero bueno, como ya les dije antes, no tiene caso buscarle lógica a esta película. Solo sirve para que la veas y te diviertas nomás.

Now, we must talk about the spectacular directing work that our great Tim Burton did with this film. From start to finish, it has one of his unmistakable hallmarks, which is his incredible collaboration with Danny Elfman as composer and director of the soundtrack. We can also see his touch when it comes to constructing scenes with a very dynamic photographic style and a very warm and varied color palette (something that we will see change in his later films). Of course, Paul Reubens' performance as Pee-wee Herman blends very well with the direction he often takes.

Best of all, with a budget of only $7 million, they managed to do an excellent job with this film, using practical resources and effects such as models, costumes, lights, smoke, etc. They even resorted to Stop Motion in a couple of scenes, which, coincidentally, are the ones I mentioned that disturbed me as a child. The use of shadows, sound effects, and these visual resources also help a lot to create that feeling of tension at certain moments in the film. Clearly, the soundtrack is one of the most striking elements for obvious reasons. Anyway, here's this film that more than one of you may or may not remember.

Personally, I give it a rating of 7/10 in terms of the comedy and adventure genre.

Ahora sí, hay que hablar del espectacular trabajo de dirección que tuvo nuestro gran Tim Burton con esta película. De inicio a fin tiene uno de sus inconfundibles distintivos y es esa increíble colaboración que tiene con Danny Elfman como compositor y director de la banda sonora. También podemos notar su toque al momento de construir escenarios con un estilo de fotografía muy dinámico y una paleta de colores muy cálida y variada (cosa que veremos cambiar en sus próximas películas). Por supuesto, el trabajo interpretativo de Paul Reubens como Pee-wee Herman combina muy bien con la dirección que tiene en muchas ocasiones.

Lo mejor de todo es que, con tan solo 7 millones de dólares de presupuesto, se consiguió hacer un trabajo excelente con esta película, utilizando recursos y efectos prácticos como maquetas, trajes, luces, humos, etc. Incluso se recurrió al Stop Motion en un par de escenas que, casualmente, son las que mencioné que me perturbaron cuando niño. El uso de sombras, ambientación con efectos de sonido y estos recursos visuales también ayudan mucho a generar esa sensación de tensión en ciertos momentos de la película. Claramente, la banda sonora es de lo más llamativa por obvias razones. En fin, aquí les dejo esta película que seguramente más de uno puede que la recuerde o no.

Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 7/10 en lo que respecta al género de comedia y aventura.
