Saw (2004) | Nattosheru Review [ENG/SPA]

Let's take a moment to talk about science fiction movies, since October is here. For many, this month may not be that important, but for me, it has become a very special month. And speaking of special things, what could be better than the "Month of Horror" special I have prepared for you? This is something I have done in previous years. This will be the third year I've done it (and the second year doing it here at Hive). Last time, I talked about some horror movies that marked my childhood and pre-teen years, but that was nothing compared to what I have for you this month. And what better way to start than with one of the most popular classics of the genre, Saw, the movie I'm bringing you today.

Talking about this movie brings back memories of my childhood and pre-teen years when we didn't always have a signal or cable at home and had to resort to buying CDs/DVDs of action, science fiction, and horror movies. I remember having a box set with the first five movies in the Saw saga (which would currently be half of the complete saga). Curiously, I became familiar with watching horror movies such as thrillers with gore and things like that. But Saw was something else that I never quite understood. Even today, it may be difficult for me to catch up and fully understand the entire series. And it's not just that, but the way they are made.

Detengámonos un rato con las películas de ciencia ficción ya que llegó octubre, un mes que para muchos tal vez no sea tan importante, pero que para mí se ha vuelto ya un mes muy especial. Y hablando de cosas especiales, ¿qué mejor que el especial “Mes del Terror” que les tengo preparado? Esto es algo que ya he hecho en años anteriores. Esta vez sería el tercer año que lo hago (a la vez que es el segundo año haciéndolo aquí en Hive). La vez pasada hablé de algunas películas de terror que marcaron mi infancia y preadolescencia, pero esto no fue nada comparado con lo que les tengo para este mes. Y qué mejor forma de empezar que con uno de los clásicos más populares del género como lo es Saw, la película que les traigo el día de hoy.

Hablar de esta película es recordar esa época de mi infancia y preadolescencia cuando no siempre teníamos señal o cable en casa y teníamos que optar por comprar CDs/DVDs de películas de acción, ciencia ficción y terror. Recuerdo haber tenido en mi poder una cinta con las cinco primeras películas de la saga de Saw (lo que actualmente sería la mitad de la saga completa). Curiosamente me familiaricé viendo películas de terror tipo thrillers con gore y cosas por el estilo. Pero lo de Saw fue otra cosa que no terminé nunca de comprender. Aún en la actualidad puede que sea complicado para mí ponerme al día y entender bien toda la saga. Y no solo es eso, sino la forma en la que están hechas.

While I like psychological horror, Saw goes even further by turning its own film series into a complete puzzle due to how messy each film is. When I saw the second, third, and fourth films, I found it more difficult to follow the storyline, and now, more than ten years later, finding out that this first installment isn't even the beginning convinced me that I had no idea what I knew about Saw until now. Maybe if I give it a chance someday in the near future, I'll get a taste for watching the whole saga just to satisfy my curiosity. Not only because they are entertaining on an audiovisual level (despite being very low-budget films), but also because of the complex way in which the story is constructed.

Despite everything I have just said about this great film series, Saw as a standalone film is personally the best I have seen in a very long time. But before I give you the context for why I'm telling you this, I first want you to recognize how iconic and famous this film itself is. Surely many will recognize it for the doll riding the little tricycle or for some Hollywood comedy parody made by some brothers with a very dark sense of humor (Scary Movie). Be that as it may, I think it's unlikely that there is anyone in this readership who doesn't know or has never read or heard of this horror gem. The reason I reiterate this is so that you can fully understand the popularity of this work after its theatrical release and its cultural impact.

Si bien me gusta el terror psicológico, lo de Saw va más allá haciendo de su propia saga de películas un completo rompecabezas por lo desordenado que está cada cinta. Cuando vi la segunda, la tercera y la cuarta película se me hacía más difícil seguirle la línea a todo y ahora, más de diez años después, el enterarme de que esta primera entrega no es ni siquiera el inicio me terminó de convencer de que no tenía ni idea de lo que conocía de Saw hasta ahora. Tal vez y dándole una oportunidad algún día, en un futuro cercano, le pueda agarrar el gusto verme toda la saga nomás para quitarme las ganas. No solo por lo entretenidas que son a nivel audiovisual (a pesar de ser cintas de muy bajo presupuesto), sino por la forma en la que la historia está construida complejamente.

A pesar de todo lo que acabo de decir de esta gran saga de películas, Saw como cinta independiente es en lo personal lo mejor que he visto por muchísimo tiempo. Pero antes de darle el contexto del por qué les digo esto, primero quiero que reconozcan lo icónica y famosa que es esta película en sí. Seguramente muchos la reconocerán por el muñeco que anda en el pequeño triciclo o por alguna parodia cómica de Hollywood hecha por unos hermanos con un humor muy negro (Scary Movie). Sea como sea, considero que es difícil que haya una persona en esta audiencia lectora que no conozca o que siquiera haya leído o escuchado de esta joya del terror. La razón por la cual reitero esto es para que entiendan bien la popularidad que tuvo dicha obra luego de su estreno en cines y su impacto cultural.

With that in mind, let's talk more about the film itself. Saw has a story that, like the entire saga, is a complete puzzle that comes together minute by minute, act by act, to culminate in a way that is simply surprising. Apart from horror, I am a big fan of the psychological subgenre that this film belongs to. The same goes for mystery, which is one of its main elements, as it creates excitement and intrigue throughout the hour and a half running time. Everything revolves around a couple of people, complete opposites who seem to share something more in common than just the room and their sense of disorientation.

Getting to know them and the person behind it all is vital to understanding the magnitude of this story. What many people probably think is a simple gore film with graphic scenes and people dying in rather unpleasant situations is actually something more. It is not just another horror thriller, but a huge puzzle that is worth following and putting together in order to finally understand what is being conveyed by everything that happens in this disgusting place. What fascinates me about this film is that it makes good use of every element, every object in the bathroom where our protagonists find themselves, to tell us a story.

Con esto presente, hablemos más a fondo de la película en sí. Saw posee una historia que, al igual que toda su saga, es un completo rompecabezas que se va armando a cada minuto, en cada acto para culminar de una manera que es simplemente sorprendente. Aparte del terror, soy muy fan de ese subgénero psicológico que, por cierto, posee esta película. Lo mismo digo con el misterio, siendo esto uno de sus elementos principales ya que causa esa emoción e intriga a lo largo de la hora y media de duración. Todo gira en torno a un par de personas, completos opuestos que al parecer comparten algo más en común que la habitación y el sentido de desorientación que tienen.

Conocerlos y conocer al que está detrás de todo esto es vital para poder comprender la magnitud de esta historia. Lo que para muchos seguramente piensan que es una simple cinta gore con escenas gráficas y gente muriendo en situaciones bastante desagradables, es en realidad algo más. No es un thriller de terror del montón, sino un enorme rompecabezas que vale la pena seguir y armar para al final entender lo que se busca transmitir con todo lo que sucede en este asqueroso lugar. Lo que me fascina de esta película es que aprovecha bastante bien cada elemento, cada objeto que hay en dicho baño en el que se encuentran nuestros protagonistas para así contarnos una historia.

We know that one is a freelance photographer and the other a renowned oncologist, while the person who brought them here is a psychopath with a rather twisted view of society. This "game" that the "Jigsaw Killer" is playing is his way of teaching these two victims and the world that life has a much greater value than many people believe it to have. This is not the first time he has conveyed this message, as he has been doing this for a long time with people he has carefully selected to teach them a valuable lesson while endangering their lives in rather risky places and situations.

Now, what brought these two to this place is the same thing that possibly led this killer to choose his previous victims. Drug addicts, liars, manipulators, heartless people who abuse life and squander it with drugs, alcohol, and hatred. Some of these cases surely claimed to have had a dream life before being dragged to an abandoned place to be tested at the expense of their own lives and those of their families or companions. That's when you see the true nature of each person and what they really are, something that is both surprising and disappointing. This twisted and sick way of testing people is what makes this film a gem of psychological horror.

Sabemos que uno es un fotógrafo independiente y el otro un oncólogo reconocido, mientras el que los trajo a este lugar es un psicópata con un ideal bastante retorcido de la sociedad. Dicho “juego” que está haciendo este “Asesino del Rompecabezas” es una forma que él tiene de enseñarle a estas dos víctimas y al mundo que la vida tiene un valor mucho mayor que lo que muchos consideran que es. Este mensaje no es la primera vez que lo transmite, ya que lleva mucho tiempo haciendo esto con gente que él ha seleccionado cuidadosamente para que aprendan una lección valiosa mientras pone en peligro sus vidas en lugares y situaciones bastante riesgosas.

Ahora, lo que hizo que a estos dos los llevaran a este lugar es lo mismo que posiblemente hizo que las anteriores víctimas de este asesino los haya escogido. Drogadictos, mentirosos, manipuladores, gente sin corazón que abusan de la vida y la despilfarran con drogas, bebidas y odio. Algunos de estos casos seguramente afirmaron haber tenido una vida de ensueño antes de ser arrastrados a un lugar abandonado para ser probados a costa de sus propias vidas y de la de sus familiares o compañeros. Es ahí cuando se ve la verdadera naturaleza de cada quien y lo que son realmente, algo que es sorprendente y decepcionante a la vez. Esta forma retorcida y enfermiza de probar a la gente es algo que hace de esta película una joya del terror psicológico.

This is exactly what we see in this film with Adam and Dr. Lawrence. We see how both try to do everything possible to get out of that disgusting abandoned bathroom, but every clue they find only divides them more and more. The worst part is that it's not complex manipulation techniques or tricks to deceive them, but the very truth behind everything, behind both of them, behind each one of them, that divides them. On the doctor's side, we see how his happy life with his wife and daughter is actually a complete lie, while our photographer is a miserable smoker who makes a living revealing the darkest secrets of rich people with his photographs. Both are manipulated in the cruelest way to do what they were asked to do from the beginning.

Another thing that fascinates me about this film is how each character is somehow related to the film's great antagonist. Apart from the two mentioned above who take center stage, there is also Detective Tapp, who is in charge of the "Jigsaw Killer" case. There are also some secondary characters who do not take on much relevance until the end, when everything is revealed and the puzzle is completely put together. They are all just victims of the ingenious tests carried out by our psychopath to reveal who they really are. It's no surprise that Jigsaw is one of the most iconic antagonists of the last century, given everything he has achieved throughout this film series.

Esto es exactamente lo que vemos en esta película con el caso de Adam y el Dr. Lawrence. Vemos cómo ambos intentan hacer lo posible para salir de ese asqueroso baño abandonado, pero cada pista que encuentran solo los divide más y más. Lo peor de esto es que no son técnicas complejas de manipulación o trucos para engañarlos, sino la misma verdad detrás de todo, de ambos, de cada quien lo que los divide. Por el lado del doctor vemos cómo su vida feliz con su esposa e hija es en realidad una completa mentira, mientras que nuestro fotógrafo es un desgraciado fumador que vive de revelar con sus fotografías los secretos más oscuros de personas ricas. Ambos son manipulados de la forma más cruel para así hacer lo que les pidieron desde un principio.

Otra cosa que me fascina de esta película es cómo cada personaje está relacionado de alguna forma con el gran antagonista de esta película. Aparte de los dos mencionados anteriormente que se llevan el protagonismo, también se encuentra el detective Tapp quien está a cargo del caso del “Asesino del Rompecabezas”. También están algunos personajes secundarios que no toman mucha relevancia sino hasta el final donde se revela todo y el rompecabezas se arma por completo. Todos son solo víctimas de las ingeniosas pruebas que realiza nuestro psicópata para así revelar quiénes son cada quien en realidad. No me extraña que Jigsaw sea uno de los antagonistas más icónicos del último siglo con todo lo que ha logrado ser en toda esta saga de películas.

But without a doubt, what made everyone pay attention and become obsessed with this franchise was definitely this movie. Just mentioning the ending is more than enough to give it a perfect score. Of course, if you want to know or don't remember how it ends, then go see the movie. I'm obviously not here to give you spoilers. It's not to praise or glorify any psychopath, but what Jigsaw manages to do in this movie is crazy. I insist, every object, every place in this disgusting abandoned bathroom, every movement or decision that each person makes, and what results from all of this in the end is simply impressive.

Even the clues he leaves for the police to find him in the end are just bait for an even bloodier test than the previous one. Anyway, this movie is crazy, to be honest. It's been a long time since I've seen a film so well done in terms of story, narration, character development, and mysteries as Saw. While it has the occasional jump-scare, grotesque scenes, and a lot of gore, what definitely grabs people's attention is the way the antagonist ends up executing each plan and each "game" in such an ingenious way that he ultimately gets away with it as usual. And speaking of the ending, once again, the feeling those last few minutes evoke is... complete madness.

Last but not least, let's talk about the audiovisual aspect. It's definitely the best part of the whole movie, as both the visual aspect, with its fixed and moving camera styles, fast cameras, and environments with cold or dark lights and tones, is top-notch. The same goes for the sound effects, which are quite accurate and sometimes loud enough to play with the atmosphere or situation at hand. The quality of the details and the ingenious use of practical effects and makeup deserve a 10. The soundtrack, for its part, is very original, especially when it often sounds like you're listening to heavy rock or something similar. In short, this film is perfect for those who like puzzles and blood.

Personally, I give it a 9/10 in terms of the horror, psychological suspense, gore, and mystery genres.

Pero sin duda alguna, lo que hizo que todo el mundo prestara atención y se obsesionara con dicha franquicia fue definitivamente esta película. Y es que con solo mencionarle el final que tiene es más que suficiente como para darle una puntuación perfecta. Claro, si quieren saber o no recuerdan cómo es que termina, entonces váyanse a ver la película, no vine aquí a darles spoilers, obviamente. No es por alabar ni engrandecer a ningún psicópata, pero es una locura lo que Jigsaw logra hacer en esta película. Y es que, insisto, cada objeto, cada lugar de este asqueroso baño abandonado, cada movimiento o decisión que toma cada persona y lo que resulta de todo esto al final es simplemente impresionante.

Hasta las mismas pistas que deja para que la policía lo encuentre al final es solo una carnada para una prueba aún más sangrienta que la anterior. En fin, una locura esta película, la verdad. Hacía mucho que no veía una cinta tan bien hecha a nivel de historia, narración, desarrollo de personajes y misterios como lo es Saw. Si bien tiene uno que otro Jumpscare, escenas grotescas y mucho gore; lo que definitivamente hace que se lleve la atención de la gente es la forma en la que el antagonista termina ejecutando cada plan y cada “juego” de una forma tan ingeniosa para al final salirse como siempre con la suya. Y hablando del final, una vez más, la sensación que causa esos últimos minutos es… una completa locura.

Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos de su apartado audiovisual. Definitivamente lo mejor de toda la película ya que tanto en el aspecto visual con los estilos de cámaras fijas y en movimiento, cámaras rápidas, ambientes con luces y tonos fríos o oscuros es de lo mejor. Lo mismo sucede con los efectos de sonido, bastante exactos y a veces fuertes como para jugar con el ambiente o la situación del momento. La calidad de los detalles y el uso ingenioso de los efectos prácticos y maquillajes es como para un 10. La banda sonora, por su parte, es muy original y más cuando suena muchas veces como si escucharas rock pesado o algo parecido. En resumen, esta película es perfecta para los que les gustan los acertijos y la sangre.

Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 9/10 en lo que respecta al género del terror, suspenso psicológico, gore y misterio.
