Sleepy Hollow (1999) | Nattosheru Review [ENG/SPA]

You have no idea how long I've wanted to review this movie. When I think of Tim Burton, one of the first movies that comes to mind is Sleepy Hollow, and with good reason. Personally, I consider it one of the best movies (if not the best movie) this great director has ever made. And I'm not just saying that because of the enormous nostalgia it evokes in me, as it's one of the movies I've seen the most times in my life since I was a child. But also because its story and characters are very, very well developed.

While it's true that Sleepy Hollow is known as a horror movie, I personally think that this type of movie that Tim Burton makes is very different from the typical horror movies we see in theaters today. Burton not only transports us to a dark, macabre, and mysterious world, but also shows us characters that can easily make you scream in fear at night if you're alone. But what makes this director very different from others is that he doesn't scare us with simple Jumpscares or shocking scenes with lots of special effects.

No tienen ni idea de cuánto tiempo he deseado hacerle una reseña a esta película. Cuando pienso en Tim Burton, una de las primeras películas que se me vienen a la mente es Sleepy Hollow y no es de menos. Personalmente considero que es de las mejores películas (para no decir la mejor película) que este grandioso director ha hecho. Y no solo lo digo por la enorme nostalgia que me genera, siendo de las películas que más veces he visto en mi vida desde que era pequeño. Sino también porque su historia y sus personajes están muy, pero muy bien desarrollados.

Si bien es cierto que Sleepy Hollow es conocida como una película de terror, personalmente pienso que este tipo de películas que hace Tim Burton es muy diferente al típico terror que vemos en cines en la actualidad. Burton no solo nos transporta a un mundo oscuro, macabro y misterioso, sino que también nos muestra personajes que fácilmente pueden hacerte gritar del susto en la noche, si estás a solas. Pero lo que hace que éste director sea muy distinto a los demás es que no nos llega a asustar con simples Jumpscares o escenas impactantes con muchos efectos especiales.

No, Tim Burton would never stoop to something as trivial as this. What he does is disturb your mind with dense themes and unforgettable characters. In Sleepy Hollow, he introduces us to the United States at the end of the 18th century, where we meet Ichabod Crane, a police officer from New York City. Due to his differences with his superiors regarding their rather archaic methods of doing things, Ichabod is assigned a multiple homicide case in a remote northern village called Sleepy Hollow. There he encounters a series of events, as well as some rather dark and disturbing secrets.

The village of Sleepy Hollow is a gloomy place with people who have many secrets related to the series of murders that have been occurring. But the most disturbing thing of all is who is committing these murders: a Headless Horseman. Our skeptical protagonist will not only have to solve the case, but also face an immortal entity that is an expert at decapitating human heads. At first glance, it may sound like a supernatural thriller based on what you've just read, and yes, it may be. However, the mix of mystery and drama in this film makes it something more.

No, Tim Burton no se rebajaría a tan poco como esto. Lo que él hace es que te perturba la mente con temas densos y personajes difíciles de olvidar. En el caso de Sleepy Hollow te introduce a los Estados Unidos de finales del siglo XVIII donde conocemos a Ichabod Crane, un agente de policía de la Ciudad de Nueva York. Debido a las diferencias que tiene con sus altos mandos en cuanto a los métodos bastante arcaicos que estos tienen de realizar las cosas, a Ichabod se le asigna un caso de homicidio múltiple en una lejana aldea del norte llamada Sleepy Hollow. Allí se encontrará con una serie de eventos, además de secretos bastante oscuros y perturbadores.

La aldea de Sleepy Hollow es un lugar sombrío con personas que poseen muchos secretos relacionados con la serie de asesinatos que han estado ocurriendo. Pero lo más perturbador de todo es quién realiza dichos asesinatos: un Jinete sin Cabeza. Nuestro incrédulo protagonista no solo tendrá que resolver el caso, sino que también se tendrá que enfrentar a una entidad inmortal que es experta en decapitar cabezas humanas. A simple vista puede sonar muy a thriller sobrenatural por todo lo que acaban de leer y si, puede que sea así. Sin embargo, la mezcla de misterio y drama que posee esta cinta la convierte en algo más.

On the one hand, we have a supernatural horror story about a Headless Horseman who decapitates people at night. But on the other hand, we have the question of who is behind these murders, which, curiously, are not random, but are being orchestrated by someone alive who has control over this dangerous supernatural being. The interesting thing about all this is how our protagonist discovers a series of secrets about this town and its inhabitants that are somehow related to the murders. Tim Burton is a genius at creating terror with his gothic style, but he also has a knack for mystery.

However, I think this film took all this to its peak by mixing these elements into a gloomy, dark, and quite disturbing story. The craziest thing of all is that the film doesn't just stop there, but also tells us a love story between the protagonist and the daughter of the wealthy Baltus Van Tassel, Katrina. As cliché as this may sound, I must admit that what we can take away from this love story between these characters is not bad. We also see a somewhat interesting development in terms of our protagonist, Ichabod Crane.

Por un lado tenemos una historia de terror sobrenatural de un jinete sin cabeza que decapita a gente en las noches. Pero por otro lado tenemos el caso de quién está detrás de dichos asesinatos que, curiosamente, no son al azar, sino que están siendo orquestados por alguien vivo que posee control de este peligroso ser sobrenatural. Lo interesante de todo esto es cómo nuestro protagonista descubre una serie de secretos de este pueblo y de sus habitantes que se relacionan de alguna manera con los asesinatos. Tim Burton es un genio para generar terror con su estilo gótico, pero también tiene su toque para con el misterio.

Sin embargo, considero que esta película llevó todo esto a su máximo esplendor al mezclar dichos elementos en una historia tétrica, oscura y bastante perturbadora. Lo más loco de todo es que la película no solo se queda conforme con esto, sino que también nos cuenta una historia de amor entre el protagonista y la hija del adinerado Baltus Van Tassel, Katrina. Por muy cliché que suene esto, debo admitir que no está mal lo que podemos extraer de dicha historia de amor entre estos personajes. Vemos también un desarrollo un tanto interesante en cuanto a nuestro protagonista, Ichabod Crane.

It is at this point that I would like to mention one of those invaluable details that this film has and that can easily go unnoticed. The origin of our protagonist's disbelief and constant fear throughout the film stems from his dark past as a child living with his parents. So as not to give away any more spoilers, I'll just mention that the flashbacks we see from his past, which manifest as nightmares in the film, are some of the most disturbing things ever. We see a rather dark yet accurate vision of the director's opinion of the radical beliefs of that era.

Apart from the famous final scene with the Headless Horseman, another scene that disturbed me as a child was one of those nightmares from our protagonist's past. I repeat, the way Tim Burton approaches topics such as witchcraft, the radical clergy of that era, and the world of the dead is both fascinating and disturbing. I like how he plays with these elements to give us characters with scenes and outcomes that have a rather shocking effect. The film is made so that, from the beginning, we see details and scenes that make you think about what is happening in this dark town of Sleepy Hollow.

Es en este punto en el que me gustaría mencionar uno de esos detalles invaluables que tiene esta película y que fácilmente pueden quedarse desapercibidos. El origen de la incredulidad y el temor constante que posee nuestro protagonista a lo largo de la película se debe a su oscuro pasado cuando era niño y vivía con sus padres. Para no darles más spoilers, solo les mencionaré que dichos flashbacks que vemos de su pasado y que se manifiestan como pesadillas en la película son de lo más perturbador que hay. Vemos una visión bastante oscura y a la vez acertada de lo que opina el director con respecto a dichas creencias radicales de aquella época.

Aparte de la famosa escena final del Jinete sin Cabeza, otra de las escenas que me perturbaron desde pequeño era una de esas pesadillas del pasado de nuestro protagonista. Repito, la forma en la que Tim Burton aborda temas como la brujería, los clérigos radicales de esa época y el mundo de los muertos es tanto fascinante como a la vez perturbadora. Me gusta cómo él juega con estos elementos para darnos personajes con escenas y desenlaces que causan un resultado bastante impactante. La película está hecha para que, desde el principio, veamos detalles y escenas que te ponen a pensar sobre lo que sucede en este oscuro pueblo de Sleepy Hollow.

And if all that weren't enough, the film also deals with other themes such as envy, greed, lust, and revenge. It is striking to see that, in contrast to all the supernatural creatures, graphic scenes, blood, and deaths, this story tells us of a tragic case of revenge in a family that stems from one of the darkest periods in human history. The way Tim Burton shows us how twisted and cruel people can be makes you think about what should really terrify us. Obviously, he doesn't lag behind with the supernatural.

Especially when it comes to one of the darkest, most dangerous, and disturbing antagonists in history: the Headless Horseman. The image we are given of this character is terrifying even in life, with his dark appearance and fang-like teeth. Both the origin of his death and everything we see happening throughout this film give us a clear idea that there are people who are definitely the embodiment of evil in life. The cold and cruel way he kills, without distinguishing between men, women, and children, is one of the most remarkable aspects of this character.

Y por si no fuera suficiente con todo esto, la película también trata otros temas como la envidia, la codicia, la lujuria y la venganza. Es impactante ver que, en contraste con todas las criaturas sobrenaturales, escenas gráficas, sangre y muertes; esta historia nos cuenta un caso trágico de venganza en una familia que nace de una de las épocas más oscuras de la historia humana. La forma en la que Tim Burton nos muestra lo retorcida y cruel que puede llegar a ser la gente te pone a pensar en lo que realmente debe de causarnos terror. Obviamente, no se queda atrás con lo sobrenatural.

Sobre todo cuando se trata de uno de los antagonistas más oscuros, peligrosos y perturbadores de toda la historia: el Jinete sin Cabeza. La imagen que nos dan de este personaje causa pavor incluso en vida con su aspecto oscuro y sus dientes con forma de colmillos. Tanto el origen de su muerte como todo lo que vemos suceder a lo largo de esta película nos da una idea bien clara de que hay gente que definitivamente son la representación del mal en vida. La manera tan fría y cruel de matar que tiene, sin distinguir entre hombres, mujeres y niños es de lo más destacable de ese personaje.

But what definitely caused me both disturbance and fascination at the same time was that iconic and unforgettable scene at the end. I don't want to give you any more spoilers than what you can see in the GIFs I'll include in this review, but I'll just say that it's totally crazy. Imagine seeing such a graphic scene when you're only five or seven years old. I definitely had an incredible childhood, now that I think about it. But anyway, Tim Burton not only gives us graphic and disturbing scenes like this one, but also a series of action scenes, chases, and even explosions that are fascinating.

Let's not forget the humor in this film. Because yes, despite being a horror, mystery, romance, and suspense film, it also has its touch of humor hidden here and there. Especially when it comes to the protagonist himself. His way of being, of speaking, and of reacting to everything is, for me, one of the most entertaining aspects of this film. There are scenes where it's hard not to laugh at Johnny Depp's excellent performance and interpretation of Ichabod Crane. On the other hand, the performances of the other members of the cast are also excellent, especially Christopher Walker as the Headless Horseman.

Pero lo que definitivamente me causó tanto perturbación como fascinación al mismo tiempo fue esa icónica e inolvidable escena del final. No quisiera darles más spoilers que lo que pueden llegar a ver en los GIFs que les colocaré en esta reseña, pero solo les diré que es una locura total. Imagínate ver dicha escena tan gráfica con tan solo cinco o siete años de edad. Definitivamente, tuve una increíble infancia, ahora que me pongo a pensar. Pero bueno, Tim Burton no solo nos da escenas bastante gráficas y perturbadoras como esta, sino que también nos entrega una serie de escenas de acción, persecuciones y hasta explosiones que es hasta fascinante.

Tampoco hay que olvidarse del humor que tiene esta película. Porque sí, a pesar de ser de terror, misterio, romance y suspenso; la película también posee su toque de humor por ahí escondido. Sobre todo en cuanto a lo que respecta al protagonista como tal. Su forma de ser, de hablar y de reaccionar a cada cosa es -para mí- de lo más divertido que tiene esta película. Hay escenas en las que es difícil no reírse por la excelente actuación e interpretación de Johnny Depp como Ichabod Crane. Por otro lado, las actuaciones de los demás miembros de este elenco también son excelentes, sobre todo Christopher Walker como el Jinete sin Cabeza.

Last but not least, let's talk about the audiovisual aspect of this film. At the end of the 1990s, Tim Burton surpassed himself when directing Sleepy Hollow. Its dark, archaic, and cold art style is one of the best. The same goes for the cinematography, static shots, transitions, visual effects, dark color palettes, and impressive use of shadows. The views of the village, cemeteries, and forest add a lot to the film's atmosphere. There's also the makeup and costumes, which are quite dark and opaque, even when they're dresses, suits, and even white wigs.

The design of the Headless Horseman is particularly striking, especially because of the way he dresses. The use of practical visual effects is something that Tim Burton is known for, and this film is no exception. From the corpses, severed heads, pumpkins, and even the blood itself, everything looks almost real because of this. On the other hand, it must be admitted that CGI was also used at the end of the film, and personally, I think it looked very good for the time. The sound effects are also very striking, but nothing compares to the impressive soundtrack of this film, which was once again composed by Danny Elfman. In short, I recommend this film as a must-see.

Personally, I give it a well-deserved rating of 10/10 in terms of the horror, mystery, supernatural, romance, and action genres.

Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos ahora del apartado audiovisual que tiene esta película. Justo a finales de los 90, Tim Burton llegó a superarse a sí mismo al momento de dirigir Sleepy Hollow. El estilo de arte oscuro, arcaico y frío que posee es de lo mejor. Lo mismo sucede con el estilo de fotografía, planos fijos, transiciones, efectos visuales, paletas de colores oscuros y un uso de sombras bastante impresionante. Las vistas del pueblo, los cementerios y el bosque le agregan bastante ambientación a la película. También está el maquillaje y las vestimentas que usan, las cuales son bastante oscuras y opacas, incluso cuando son vestidos, trajes y hasta peluquines blancos.

El diseño del Jinete sin Cabeza es de lo más llamativo, sobre todo por su forma de vestir. El uso de efectos visuales prácticos es algo que destaca bastante a Tim Burton y en esta película no se queda atrás. Desde los cadáveres, las cabezas cercenadas, las calabazas y hasta la propia sangre se ve casi real debido a esto. Por otro lado, algo que sí hay que admitir es que también usaron CGI al final de la película y, en lo personal, quedó muy bien para la época. Los efectos de sonido también llaman mucho la atención, pero nada como la impresionante banda sonora que tiene esta película y que fue hecha, una vez más, por Danny Elfman. En fin, les dejo esta película que tienen que ver sí o sí.

Personalmente, le doy una merecida calificación de 10/10 en lo que respecta al género de terror, misterio, sobrenatural, romance y acción.
