The Blair Witch Project (1999) | Nattosheru Review [ENG/SPA]

When I said earlier that I found this movie difficult to watch for various reasons, it wasn't just because it was scary (which it did turn out to be on a couple of occasions), but rather because it made me feel so dizzy. I literally had an upset stomach and everything for more than half of the movie. It was a horrible feeling, and I wouldn't wish it on anyone. But apparently, it's more of a personal problem I have with watching Found Footage-type movies because of the erratic camera movements that make me quite dizzy. This isn't the first time this has happened to me, and I've even seen other movies of this same style, which is why I haven't been able to finish them.

If you get dizzy easily like me, then I don't recommend watching this movie at all because you'll have a really bad time. But if you think you can handle it and it doesn't bother you (physically) to watch this type of film, then I do recommend watching it for the reasons I'll explain below. The Blair Witch Project is a movie I haven't seen before, but I knew of its existence and popularity thanks to the world of cinema and the internet. Apparently, it is one of the pioneers in popularizing Found Footage in the 2000s and beyond, as thanks to it, there were many other famous horror films that used this same formula. And it's normal for this to happen thanks to the impact they have on the audience.

Cuando dije antes que esta película me costó mucho verla por diversas razones, no fue solamente porque fuera aterradora (que sí llegó a serlo en un par de ocasiones), sino más bien por lo mucho que me maree viéndola. Literalmente, estuve con el estómago revuelto y todo durante más de la segunda mitad de la película. Fue horrible esa sensación y no se la deseo a nadie. Pero por lo visto parece que es más una problema personal que tengo yo con ver películas tipo Found Footage debido al estilo de movimiento de cámaras erráticos que me marean bastante. Esta no es la primera vez que me sucede e incluso he visto otras películas de este mismo estilo y es por eso que no he podido terminarlas.

Si eres de los que se marean fácilmente como yo, entonces no te recomiendo ver esta película en lo absoluto porque la vas a pasar muy mal. Pero si crees poder aguantar y no te cuesta nada (físicamente) ver este tipo de metrajes entonces sí te recomiendo verla por lo que les diré a continuación. The Blair Witch Project es una película que no he visto antes, pero sí conocía de su existencia y su popularidad gracias al mundo del cine y el internet. Por lo visto, es de las pioneras en popularizar el Found Footage en los años 2000 en adelante ya que, gracias a ella, existieron muchas otras cintas famosas del terror que poseen esta misma fórmula. Y es normal que suceda esto gracias al impacto que tienen en el público.

When watching a film made entirely from Found Footage, it's normal for people to feel that everything that happens throughout the story is more real. The simple idea that everything was recorded with a camera, without any editing or anything like that, and that you don't know any of the actors who appear in the film is more than enough to trigger that internal alarm that, possibly, everything that happened was real. Even if everything is completely fake, found footage gives stories a touch of realism and authenticity, especially if they are horror stories, of course. And I think that, in the case of The Blair Witch Project, it was a tremendous feat that they decided to film it this way.

Just imagine entering a forest, completely cut off from civilization, and then hearing what many people think and know about what might inhabit that disturbing place. The last thing you would expect and the least thing you would want to happen is to get lost in that forest. And if that's not enough, now add the feeling that you're being stalked at night, that you're not completely alone in this dark and dangerous place. All this and more is what we see happen to the three young people who decide to camp in the woods where, supposedly, there is a witch who has terrorized an entire town for many generations.

Al ver una película hecha 100% de Metraje Encontrado es normal que la gente sienta más real todo lo que sucede a lo largo de la historia. La simple idea de que todo haya sido grabado con una cámara, sin ninguna edición ni nada por el estilo y que no conozcas a ninguno de los actores que aparecen en dicha película es más que suficiente para activar esa alarma interna de que, posiblemente, todo lo que sucedió haya sido real. Aún si todo es completamente falso, el Metraje Encontrado le da ese toque de realismo y autenticidad a las historias y más si son de terror, por supuesto. Y pienso que, con el caso de The Blair Witch Project fue una hazaña tremenda que hayan decidido grabarla de esta manera.

Solo imagínate entrar en un bosque, completamente alejado de la civilización, y justo después de escuchar lo que mucha gente piensa y conoce sobre lo que puede habitar en ese inquietante lugar. Lo último que esperarías y que menos desearías que sucediera es que te pierdas en ese bosque. Y si no es suficiente con eso, ahora añade la sensación de que te están acosando en las noches, es decir, que no estás completamente solo en este oscuro y peligroso lugar. Todo esto y más es lo que vemos sucederle a los tres jóvenes que deciden acampar en el bosque donde, supuestamente, se encuentra una bruja que ha causado terror a todo un pueblo durante muchas generaciones.

Americans really like the idea of going to haunted places or cursed sites for some reason that I don't really understand. It's as if the morbid fascination these places generate attracts them in some way. Be that as it may, their "ingenious" idea of shooting a movie in the middle of a forest doesn't quite work out for them, as they get lost, which is typical, right? After that, we see how everything becomes more and more gloomy than you can imagine. As they walk and walk, going around in circles and looking for a way out, every night they spend camping in that forest is like reliving a complete nightmare that becomes more and more real.

Imagine that suddenly you hear all kinds of sounds, footsteps or voices in the distance that you can't make out. Then there are sounds of people, children, babies crying or... even worse... laughing in the middle of the night. After that horrible experience, you see signs around you, like stones piled up near where you camped or a place in the forest completely decorated with figures made of sticks and dry leaves shaped like people hanging of all types and sizes. All this to then feel that, really, someone is following you, since every night you hear footsteps, sounds, or screams getting closer and closer... until suddenly the worst happens. Imagine being with your friends and experiencing all this at night while during the day you can't escape from that terrifying forest.

De verdad que a los americanos les gusta mucho la idea de ir a lugares embrujados o sitios malditos por alguna razón que de verdad no entiendo. Es como si la morbosidad que generan estos lugares les atrajera de alguna u otra manera. Sea como sea, su “ingeniosa” idea de grabar una película en medio de un bosque no les sale del todo bien ya que se pierden, lo típico, ¿no? Luego de eso vemos cómo todo se vuelve más y más tétrico de lo que te puedes imaginar. Mientras caminan y caminan, dando vueltas y buscando la manera de salir de ahí, cada noche que pasan acampando en ese bosque es como revivir una completa pesadilla que cada vez se vuelve más y más real.

Imagínate que de repente escuchas sonidos de todo tipo, pisadas o voces a lo lejos que no logras distinguir. Luego son sonidos de personas, niños, bebés llorando o… peor aún… riendo en medio de la noche. Luego de esa horrible experiencia, ves señales a tu alrededor, como piedras apiladas cerca de donde acampaste o un sitio en el bosque completamente adornado de figuras hechas de palos y hojas secas con forma de personas colgadas de todo tipo y tamaño. Todo esto para luego sentir que, de verdad, hay alguien siguiéndote ya que cada noche se escuchan pasos, sonidos o gritos más y más cerca… hasta que de repente sucede lo peor. Imagínate estar con tus amigos y experimentar todo esto en las noches mientras que en el día no logran escapar de ese aterrador bosque.

It is fascinating how a small series of events ends up in one of the worst nightmares ever experienced by anyone. The best thing about this hour-and-a-half-long feature film is how the young people gradually begin to lose their sanity, while they start arguing, crying, or screaming over anything and everything. The feeling of despair generated by these scenes of them trying unsuccessfully to escape the forest or realizing that they are going around in circles is enormous. This is how the film generates a psychological terror much stronger than any other film about killings or ghosts can generate. The Blair Witch Project does not need deaths or bloody scenes, nor crazy people, much less spirits or unknown entities.

What makes this film special is the amalgam of emotions you feel from beginning to end when you watch it. Starting with a slight uneasiness that they are lost, you end up feeling dread and fear for what is really hiding in the bushes around this dark forest or whatever has been stalking and deceiving the young people day and night. There are many scenes in this film that cause terror, dread, or nervousness, and most of them do not require any graphic or visual scenes to achieve this. There are no jump scares or any other typical elements of generic horror films. Only sounds, elements, or signs that indicate something macabre inhabiting this place and a disturbing feeling throughout.

Es fascinante cómo una pequeña serie de acontecimientos termina en una de las peores pesadillas jamás vividas para alguien. Lo mejor de todo lo que se puede ver en esta hora y media de largometraje es cómo los jóvenes empiezan a perder la cordura poco a poco, a la vez que empiezan a discutir, llorar o gritar por cualquier cosa. La sensación de desesperación que generan dichas escenas de ellos intentando escapar del bosque sin éxito o darse cuenta de que están dando vueltas es enorme. Es así como la película genera un terror psicológico mucho más fuerte que lo que puede generar cualquier otra película de matanzas o fantasmas. The Blair Witch Project no necesita de muertes o escenas sangrientas, ni locos enmarcados, ni mucho menos de espíritus o entidades desconocidas.

Lo que hace especial a esta película es esa amalgama de emociones que uno siente de principio a fin cuando la ves. Empezando por la inquietud leve de que están perdidos hasta terminar sintiendo un pavor y miedo por lo que realmente se esconde entre los arbustos alrededor de este oscuro bosque o lo que sea que haya estado acosando y engañando a los jóvenes cada día y cada noche. Hay muchas escenas que causan terror, pavor o nervios en esta película y la mayoría no necesita de ninguna escena gráfica o visual para esto. Ni jumpscares, ni ninguna otra cosa típica de cualquier película de terror genérica. Solo sonidos, elementos o señales que indican algo macabro habitando este lugar y una sensación inquietante todo el tiempo.

That's why so many people loved this movie, and it ended up becoming one of the scariest films of this century. The fact that it achieved such success with such a small budget and production is truly admirable. The performances of each member of the cast are also quite good. You often feel that despair and terror truly overwhelm them because of everything they experience in this forest, and watching them slowly succumb to madness every day, every night, is fascinating. Of course, there was one scene in particular that made me laugh more than anything else, but that's because of the famous parody they made of this and many other classic horror movies (Scary Movie).

Last but not least, let's talk about the audiovisual aspect of this film. As I mentioned several times before, this film is made in the found footage style, which means that its style and quality are of little importance. The erratic camera movements, the changes in shots and characters, and the recordings far from the voices to create that disturbing atmosphere are the best. The same goes for the absence of light at night and the sound effects that are key to setting the mood for each scene. There is no soundtrack, so the only thing you hear are the voices and sounds in this disturbing forest. In short, this film is perfect for those looking to see something terrifying and closer to reality.

Personally, I give it a rating of 9/10 in terms of the horror and psychological suspense genre.

Es por eso que a mucha gente le encantó dicha película y terminó convirtiéndose en una de las más aterradoras de este siglo. Que haya conseguido un éxito tal con tan poco presupuesto y producción es algo admirable, de verdad. Las actuaciones de cada miembro de este elenco tampoco están para nada mal. Muchas veces se siente que de verdad la desesperación y el terror los abruma por todo lo que viven en este bosque y verlos sucumbir lentamente a la locura cada día, cada noche, es fascinante. Claro, hubo una escena en especial que me dió más risa que otra cosa, pero es por la bendita parodia famosa que le hicieron a esta y muchas otras películas clásicas de terror (Scary Movie).

Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos ahora del apartado audiovisual de esta película. Como ya les mencioné varias veces antes, esta cinta está hecha a lo Found Footage, lo cual significa que el estilo y la calidad que posee es lo de menos. Los movimientos erráticos de la cámara, los cambios de planos y personajes y las grabaciones alejadas de las voces para generar ese ambiente inquietante son de lo mejor. Lo mismo sucede con la ausencia de luz en las noches o los efectos de sonidos que son clave para ambientar cada escena. Sin banda sonora, para que lo único que se escuche sean las voces y los sonidos que hay en este inquietante bosque. En resumen, esta película es perfecta para los que buscan ver algo aterrador y más cercano a la realidad.

Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 9/10 en lo que respecta al género del terror y el suspenso psicológico.
