Now that I realize it, Roland Emmerich's films have influenced my childhood and pre-adolescence a lot, especially with these kind of global catastrophe movies with tremendous visual effects that still to this day, more than 20 years after their theatrical release, still look too good. If not that, then we have one of the greatest alien invasion films I have ever seen. That's right, we're talking about Independence Day. It's funny that at that time (in the early 2000s) the theme of catastrophes became very popular in Hollywood cinemas. Nowadays, when I watch this movie again I realize how completely absurd these stories are where the world comes to an end with such exploited themes as "global warming", the year of the end of the world (2012), among others. But the most absurd thing is that the idea of an alien invasion sounds much more realistic now than the fact that half the planet will turn into ice. Among other things, the lack of a good script made it a bit of a drag for me. And I don't say that because the story itself is slow, but because it has so many clichés and errors that I find it hard to watch much of the movie. But well, I'll explain this later.

Es curioso que en esa época (a principios de los 2000s) se volviera muy popular el tema de los catástrofes en los cines de Hollywood. Hoy en día, cuando vuelvo a ver esta película me doy cuenta de lo completamente absurdas que son estas historias donde el mundo llega a su fin con temas tan explotados como el “calentamiento global”, el año del fin del mundo (2012), entre otros. Pero lo más absurdo es que la idea de una invasión extraterrestre suena mucho más realista ahora que el hecho de que medio planeta se convierta en hielo. Entre otras cosas, el no contar con un buen guión se me hizo un tanto pesado. Y no lo digo por el hecho de que la historia en sí sea lenta, sino que posee tantos clichés y errores que se me hace difícil de ver en gran parte de la película. All this destruction and chaos forces the President of the United States to decree a sudden closure of all airlines in the country. This is why the prediction Jack made at the beginning becomes more and more credible.

At first I was quite confused (and still am) as to how global warming can cause a worldwide disaster more like the "Ice Age" than anything else. But as has been the case since I was a kid when I watched this film incessantly every time it came on TV, I completely ignored these plot details and focused more on the various disaster scenes this film has. I'm no expert in science, let alone weather, so these kinds of sketchy explanations are very hard for me to understand. But leaving that aside, the detail of focusing the story we are shown in different parts is something that may not be all bad. Yes, I admit that there are scenes and moments in which I think they are unnecessary, but as a general rule it is good that there is that variety in terms of experiences lived in this series of natural disasters. I must also point out the typical clichés of the protagonist who is a father and husband absent for his work and who has the typical family problems as usual. There are also scenes in which secondary characters are just there for the sake of being there and do almost nothing to let themselves die while the protagonists manage to survive in situations ten times more dangerous.

A primera instancia quedé bastante confundido (y lo sigo estando) con respecto a la forma en la que el calentamiento global puede ocasionar un desastre a nivel mundial muy parecido a la “Era del Hielo” que a otra cosa. Pero como ha sucedido desde que era pequeño cuando veía esta cinta sin cesar cada vez que salía en la televisión, ignoré por completo estos detalles de la trama y me enfoqué más en las diferentes escenas de catástrofes que tiene esta película. No soy ningún experto en ciencias ni mucho menos en el clima, así que este tipo de explicaciones poco precisas se me hacen muy complicadas de entender. Pero dejando esto de lado, el detalle de enfocar la historia que nos muestran en diferentes partes es algo que puede que no sea del todo malo. Si, admito que hay escenas y momentos en los que pienso que son innecesarias, pero en regla general está bien que haya esa variedad en cuanto a experiencias vividas en esta serie de catástrofes naturales. También debo destacar los típicos clichés del protagonista que es padre y esposo ausente por su trabajo y que tiene los típicos problemas familiares de siempre. También hay escenas en las que personajes secundarios nomás están solo por estar y no hacen casi nada para dejarse morir mientras que los protagonistas logran sobrevivir ante situaciones diez veces más peligrosas.

Especially in terms of survival, much of the film is a clear example of what to do and what not to do in certain situations. It also has certain messages and hints regarding migrations, this being a very popular case in the United States, especially now, even. Anyway, beyond being a spectacle of catastrophes and destruction worldwide, this film is one of those gems that aged very well over the years, besides showing us an "end of the world" quite inaccurate, but at the same time very easy to believe.

Last but not least, let's talk about the technical and visual aspect of this film. With a budget of over 100 million dollars and with the help of Roland Emmerich as producer and director of this film, it is to be expected that from the beginning you can witness a level of quality and audiovisual work that is simply impressive. The cool color palette, good use of moving cameras, practical effects and makeup are also details to be noted. All of this can be best enjoyed in certain precise scenarios where the visuals along with the acting and acting participation of the cast make a perfect combination. Not to mention the sound effects and the soundtrack, which is so well done that it manages to convey all kinds of tension and emotion in such scenes of the film. In short, this film is perfect for any lover of catastrophes and super-productions.

Con un presupuesto de más de 100 millones de dólares y con la ayuda de Roland Emmerich como productor y a la vez director de esta película, es de esperarse que desde un principio se pueda presenciar un nivel de calidad y trabajo audiovisual que es simplemente impresionante. Tanto el tema de la fotografía, los planos, las vistas panorámicas y el excelente trabajo en el uso del CGI y los efectos visuales en general es fantástico. La paleta de colores fríos, el buen uso de las cámaras en movimiento, los efectos prácticos y el maquillaje son también detalles a tener en cuenta. Todo esto se puede disfrutar mejor en ciertos escenarios precisos donde lo visual junto con la participación actoral e interpretativa del elenco hacen una combinación perfecta. Eso sin mencionar los efectos de sonido y la banda sonora, la cual está tan bien hecha que consigue transmitir todo tipo de tensión y emoción en dichas escenas de la película. En resumen, esta cinta es perfecta para todo amante de los catástrofes y las súper-producciones nomás.

Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 8/10 en lo que respecta al género de la ciencia ficción.
