The Island (2005) | Nattosheru Review [ENG/SPA]

I have a vague memory of this film from when I was a child or preteen. At the time, I wasn't even sure if I had seen it in its entirety, which, if I had, I would remember more clearly. Since then, I haven't seen it again, nor have I seen anyone on the internet recommend it or even mention its existence. If it weren't for how much Michael Bay's films have influenced my life, I wouldn't have remembered the name of this movie when I wrote the list of science fiction works for this special. And thank goodness I did, because what I recently encountered when I saw it was quite a spectacle, as only the director of the Transformers film series can deliver.

Of course, those of us who are familiar with his work know how Michael handles scripts and characters. We also know that the only thing he excels at is the audiovisual aspect, which is no exception in the case of The Island. But beyond entertaining us with a chase sequence full of action and explosions, Michael manages to curiously mix the theme of escaping dystopias with clones and their commercial use in this futuristic world. I was surprised myself by how the film begins with a sense of being a story full of mystery and suspense, with an unsettling atmosphere throughout and a setting that leaves you cold because of how strange it is.

Tengo un vago recuerdo de esta película de cuando era niño o preadolescente. En aquel entonces no estaba seguro siquiera de que lo hubiera visto completo, cosa que si fuese así lo recordaría más claramente. Desde entonces, no lo he visto más nunca y tampoco vi que gente en internet lo recomiende o siquiera llegase a mencionar de su existencia. Si no fuera por lo mucho que las cintas de Michael Bay han influenciado en mi vida, no hubiera recordado el nombre de esta película para cuando escribí la lista de obras de ciencia ficción para este especial. Y menos mal que lo hice, ya que lo que me topé recientemente al verla fue todo un espectáculo, tal y como el mismo director de la serie de películas de Transformers puede hacer.

Claro está, los que conocemos su trabajo sabemos cómo maneja Michael el tema de los guiones y los personajes. También sabemos que en lo único en lo que él se destaca es en lo audiovisual, lo cual no es la excepción en el caso de The Island. Pero más allá de entretenernos con una secuencia de persecución con acción y explosiones, Michael consigue mezclar de una manera curiosa el tema de los escapes de distopías con los clones y el uso comercial que estos tienen en este mundo futurista. Yo mismo llegué a sorprenderme de cómo la cinta inicia con una sensación de ser una historia repleta de misterio y suspenso con un ambiente inquietante en todo momento y un lugar que te deja frío por lo extraño que es.

But after the first act, we see how all this changes dramatically into a simple action thriller with flying motorcycles, explosions, and buildings falling apart. Personally, I have nothing against the two completely opposite sides of this film. What does concern me is the fact that the theme of persecution and everything else completely overshadows what is presented at the beginning. I'm not saying that the story or the characters are poorly done, quite the contrary. The only thing I want to highlight is how this audiovisual spectacle, with its action and typical clichés, completely overshadows the main message, which is related to the theme of human identity.

As some of my regular readers will know, I'm a big fan of dystopian works, especially if they're inspired by their golden age in the 70s and 80s. And that's what caught my attention at the beginning of this film, as the first thing we see is our protagonist, Lincoln, discovering that everything he knows about this complex where he is living is a simple, well-constructed facade beneath a military bunker in the middle of a huge desert. When he discovers the true fate of those who are "chosen to go to the island", terror sets in, and this moment in the film is nothing short of thrilling. Of course, the rest of the film is also entertaining and interesting.

Pero luego de su primer acto es que vemos cómo todo esto cambia de forma estrepitosa a un simple thriller de acción y persecuciones con motos voladoras, explosiones y edificios cayéndose a pedazos. Personalmente opino que no tengo nada en contra de ambos lados completamente opuestos que tiene esta película. Lo que sí me preocupa es el hecho de que el tema de la persecución y todo lo demás llegue a opacar por completo lo que se presenta desde un principio. No digo que la historia o los personajes están mal hechos, sino todo lo contrario, más bien. Lo único que destaco es cómo dicho espectáculo audiovisual con su acción y los típicos clichés de siempre opacan por completo el mensaje principal que se relaciona incluso con el tema de la identidad humana.

Como ya algunos de los que me leen frecuentemente sabrán, soy muy fan de las obras distópicas y más si están inspiradas en su época dorada de los años 70 y 80. Y lo que me atrapó al principio de esta película fue esto, ya que lo primero que vemos es a nuestro protagonista, Lincoln, descubrir que todo lo que conoce de este complejo donde está viviendo es una simple fachada bien construida debajo de un búnker militar en medio de un enorme desierto. Cuando descubre el verdadero destino de los que son “elegidos para ir a la isla”, el terror se hace presente y no causa más que emoción este momento de la película. Claro, lo demás que vemos en el resto de la película es también entretenido e interesante.

I say this because I think that, for Michael Bay, he manages to balance the suspense with everything else, including the action and the chases. However, the main problem is that, because it's Michael Bay, we know that the visual and sound effects will make us completely forget what the hell we're watching. While we try not to forget that it's a couple of clones trying to escape for their lives in a futuristic Los Angeles, everything that made sense in this movie disappears completely when we see how they both survive a huge fall with part of a building collapsing and a helicopter exploding in the air.

Yes, now you know what I mean by "the usual clichés" in this movie. Things like the protagonists or main characters surviving things like what I just described above; Lincoln inexplicably remembering everything about his promoter, even how to drive a flying motorcycle in a chase scene. Or even the typical ending that this movie has, which is taken from dozens of action stories where the protagonist saves the world, defeats the villain, and gets the girl. I mean, it's as if Michael or the writers of this script didn't put any effort into the story after even getting halfway through it.

Esto lo digo ya que pienso que, para ser Michael Bay, consigue equilibrar un poco el tema del suspenso con todo lo demás, incluyendo la acción y las persecuciones. Sin embargo, el problema principal parte en que, al ser Michael Bay, sabemos que los efectos visuales y de sonido nos harán olvidar por completo qué rayos estamos viendo. Mientras intentamos no olvidar que son una pareja de clones los que intentan escapar por sus vidas en una ciudad futurista de Los Ángeles, todo lo que tenía sentido en esta película desaparece por completo cuando vemos cómo ambos sobreviven de una gran caída con parte de un edificio derrumbándose y un helicóptero explotando en el aire.

Si, ahora saben a lo que me refiero con el tema de “los clichés de siempre” con esta película. Cosas como que los protagonistas o personajes principales sobrevivan a cosas como lo que les acabo de describir arriba; que Lincoln de una manera inexplicable recuerde todo lo de su promotor hasta incluso cómo conducir una motocicleta voladora justo en una escena de persecución. O incluso el típico final que tiene esta película que está sacada de decenas de historias de acción donde el protagonista salva el mundo, vence al villano y se queda con la chica. O sea, es como si Michael o los escritores de este guión no se esforzaron en lo absoluto con la historia luego de llegar siquiera a la mitad de ella.

But hey, I'm not saying that this makes The Island a bad movie. On the one hand, it has a compelling premise, but after the halfway point, it deceives you like a clickbait title, since it's not a story about a dystopian world as it supposedly claims to be at the beginning. On the other hand, it also delivers on being a film full of action, fascinating sequences, explosions, dark humor, and—of course—typical clone jokes (such as "shoot him, I'm the real one..."). So, if you like that kind of entertaining, high-production-value film, then this movie is what you're looking for.

But if you're looking for something that makes you question your own identity, you can also watch it, although it won't be entirely fascinating after the sudden change that occurs after the first hour of footage. It's not that it has character development or moments that blow your mind with a fascinating handling of elements and ideologies about what really identifies us as humans and what differentiates us from a copy made 100% in our likeness. Unfortunately, Michael Bay doesn't seem to have the head for experimenting with those things. We already know that his thing is to make a car explosion or a building collapse look great in his movies, and that's it.

Pero bueno, no digo que con esto The Island sea una mala película. Por un lado cumple con tener una premisa que atrapa, solo que luego de la mitad te engaña como un título clickbait ya que no es una historia de un mundo distópico como supuestamente dice serlo al principio. Pero por otro lado cumple también con ser una cinta repleta de acción, secuencias fascinantes, explosiones, humor negro y -por supuesto- chistes típicos de clones (como lo es el caso de “dispárale a él, yo soy el verdadero…”). Así que, por ese lado, si te gustan ese tipo de películas entretenidas y con un gran nivel de producción, entonces esta película es lo que buscabas.

Pero si lo que buscas es algo que te haga dudar de tu propia identidad, también lo puedes ver, aunque no será del todo fascinante luego del cambio repentino que tiene después de la primera hora de metraje. Tampoco es que tenga un desarrollo de personajes o momentos en los que te explote la cabeza con un manejo fascinante de elementos e ideologías sobre lo que realmente nos identifica como humanos y qué es lo que nos diferencia de una copia hecha 100% a nuestra semejanza. Lamentablemente, Michael Bay parece no tener cabeza para experimentar con esas cosas. Ya sabemos que lo suyo es hacer que la explosión de un auto o el derrumbe de un edificio se vea de lo mejor en sus películas y ya.

Last but not least, let's talk about what Michael Bay really stands out for compared to other famous directors of this era. The audiovisual aspect of this film is fascinating, especially considering that it was made 20 years ago. The use of moving cameras, excellent transitions, slow motion, and the use of light and shadow is top-notch. The same goes for the practical and computer-generated visual effects. The views of the desert or the futuristic city in this film are fascinating, as is the entire underground bunker where the clones are located. The use of printed memories or mind control that we see in this film is an interesting nod to the theme of substitute identities and the like.

The clothing styles and makeup in this film are also interesting, especially how the people under the bunker dress and how they differ from how people dress in the outside world. The details of the clones being formed in piles of cocoons also give the film an unsettling touch, as do the white corridors and rooms with cameras running 24/7. The sound effects are very well done, as Michael always manages to do well in this type of work. But the best thing is the soundtrack, which always manages to heighten the emotion of each moment to its maximum level. In short, this film is not at all what it appears to be. So if you're a fan of action thrillers more than science fiction, then I invite you to watch it.

Personally, I give it a rating of 8/10 in terms of the action, suspense, and science fiction genres.

Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos de eso en lo que Michael Bay sí se sabe destacar por sobre los demás directores famosos de esta época. El tema audiovisual de esta película es fascinante, sobre todo al saber que está hecha hace 20 años ya. El uso de cámaras en movimiento, las excelentes transiciones, las cámaras lentas, el uso de sombras y luces es de lo mejor. Lo mismo sucede con los efectos visuales prácticos y hechos por computadora. Las vistas del desierto o de la ciudad futurista en esta película es fascinante, lo mismo va con todo el búnker que hay debajo de la tierra donde se encuentran los clones. El uso de memorias impresas o control mental que vemos en esta película es un guiño interesante sobre el tema de identidades sustitutas y cosas por el estilo.

El tema de los estilos de vestimenta y maquillajes que tiene esta película también se ve interesante, sobre todo con cómo se visten las personas debajo del búnker y cómo estos se diferencian con cómo se viste la gente en el mundo exterior. Los detalles de los clones siendo formados en montones de capullos también le da ese toque inquietante a la película, lo mismo con los pasillos blancos y las habitaciones con cámaras encendidas 24/7. Los efectos de sonido están muy bien hechos, tal y como Michael consigue hacer bien este tipo de trabajos. Pero lo mejor es su banda sonora donde sabemos que siempre consigue elevar la emoción de cada momento hasta su máximo nivel. En resumen, esta película no es para nada lo que aparenta. Así que si eres fan de los thrillers de acción más que la ciencia ficción, entonces te invito a verla.

Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 8/10 en lo que respecta al género de acción, suspenso y ciencia ficción.
