Among the most fascinating films I have ever seen are those about space travel or adventures. Entire franchises are dedicated to this type of film, and it's crazy how famous they still are today. Personally, I love watching these types of movies because of everything you get to experience with them. However, as with many other movies, I haven't seen the most recent ones, nor have they caught my attention. The closest I've come to seeing one is the movie I'm bringing you today, which was released a decade ago. And boy, was it worth getting to know it since then, honestly.

Before talking about The Martian, I would first like to mention the reason why I haven't brought you reviews of other space-themed movies like Star Wars or Guardians of the Galaxy. The reason is very simple: these movies are part of famous film franchises that are very much geared toward a single target audience. Honestly, if I'm going to talk about one of these films, I'd rather do so in a special feature dedicated 100% to that saga or film franchise than just mention it in a long list of science fiction films. These types of works had such a big impact on my childhood and pre-teen years that I can't take them lightly.

De entre las películas más fascinantes que he visto en toda mi vida están las de viajes o aventuras espaciales. Franquicias enteras están dedicadas a este tipo de obras cinematográficas y es una locura lo famosas que son aún en la actualidad. En lo personal, me encanta ver este tipo de películas por todo lo que se logra experimentar con ellas. Sin embargo, como ha pasado con muchas otras películas, las más modernas no las he visto ni me han terminado de llamar la atención. Lo más cercano que llegué a ver fue esta película que les traigo hoy, estrenada hace una década atrás. Y vaya que valió completamente la pena haberla conocido desde entonces, la verdad.

Antes de hablarles de The Martian, quisiera mencionar primero la razón del por qué no les he traído reseñas de otras películas con temáticas espaciales tipo Star Wars o Guardianes de la Galaxia. La razón es muy simple y es que dichas películas son parte de franquicias cinematográficas famosas y bien cerradas a un solo público objetivo. Sinceramente, para hablarles de una de estas películas, prefiero mejor hacerlo en un especial dedicado al 100% a dicha saga o franquicia cinematográfica que solo mencionarlo en una larga lista de películas de ciencia ficción nomás. Este tipo de obras han impactado mucho en mi infancia y preadolescencia como para tomarlas a la ligera.

Now, returning to the film I'm bringing you today, I just want to highlight the enormous coincidence that the director of The Martian is the same person who made the famous classic film from the 80s, Alien. And it's not surprising, really, since in a way you can see the influence of this great director of incredible science fiction works just by watching the first ten or fifteen minutes of this film. If you remember, right? You can tell a good movie when it manages to hook you completely in the first few minutes, and I think this blockbuster from the last decade does so without much effort. It starts off with all the action, an unfortunate event that ends with a desolate astronaut on the huge red planet, Mars.

This is how our protagonist, Mark Watney, begins his "space adventure" in this inhospitable place with very few resources and no communication with Earth. Aware of his current situation, Mark decides to go to the Habitat and use all his knowledge of botanical science to survive in this place until another exploration team is sent to Mars. As you have just read, this film is not about an adventure similar to the one I presented last time. This time, we will not see dangerous robots, human-eating aliens, meteorites, or black holes. It will only be about a simple, lonely astronaut trying to survive on the desert red planet with only what he has and what he knows, while facing one difficulty after another.

Ahora sí, volviendo a la película que les traigo el día de hoy solo quiero destacar la enorme casualidad de que el director de The Martian sea el mismo que hizo la famosa cinta clásica de los 80s, Alien. Y no es de sorprenderse, la verdad, ya que de cierto modo se puede notar la influencia de este grandioso director de obras increíbles de ciencia ficción con solo ver los primeros diez o quince minutos de esta película. Si recuerdan, ¿no? Una buena película se nota cuando en los primeros minutos consigue engancharte por completo y considero que esta cinta taquillera de la década pasada lo logra sin mucho esfuerzo. Empieza de una con toda la acción, un evento desafortunado que termina con un astronauta desolado en el enorme planeta rojo, Marte.

Así es como nuestro protagonista, Mark Watney empieza su “aventura espacial” en este inhóspito lugar con muy pocos recursos y sin comunicación alguna con el planeta tierra. Consciente de su situación actual, Mark decide ir al Hábitat y utilizar todo su conocimiento sobre ciencia botánica para sobrevivir en este lugar hasta que manden a otro equipo de exploración a Marte. Como acaban de leer, esta película no trata de una aventura similar a la que les presenté la vez pasada. En esta ocasión no veremos robots peligrosos, aliens come-humanos, meteoritos ni agujeros negros. Solo se tratará de un simple y solitario astronauta intentando sobrevivir en el desértico planeta rojo solamente con lo que tiene y lo que sabe mientras pasa una dificultad tras otra.

Despite how simple all this may sound, I can assure you that this film is well worth watching. Its two-and-a-half-hour running time is nothing compared to the number of fascinating and entertaining moments this film has to offer. And I say this as someone who is very picky when it comes to long movies. But in this case, it is clear that the director has managed to craft a well-constructed plot that is both interesting and entertaining. What I like most about this movie is that it not only entertains, but also educates in a way when explaining scientific methods or ways of doing certain things.

These scientific elements and themes give the story a semi-realistic touch, especially when it mentions historical facts and events related to space travel. Clearly, we are aware that it is a science fiction film after all, but the way it is made makes such an impression that it is difficult to forget. And if we add to this the film's shocking moments and scenes where anything can happen, we can easily come across one of the best films of the era. All this is thanks to Ridley Scott's genius for storytelling.

A pesar de lo aparentemente simple que suene todo esto, les aseguro por completo que es una película que vale mucho la pena ver. Sus dos horas y media de duración no son nada comparadas con la cantidad de momentos fascinantes y entretenidos que tiene esta película para ofrecer. Y te lo digo yo que soy muy quejumbroso en lo que respecta a películas largas. Pero en este caso es evidente que el director logró elaborar una trama muy bien construida tanto para que sea interesante como a su vez entretenida. Lo que más me gusta de esta película es que, no solo entretiene, sino que también educa de cierto modo cuando explican métodos o formas científicas para hacer ciertas cosas.

Estos elementos y temas científicos que trata la cinta le da ese toque semi-realista a dicha historia, más que nada al mencionar incluso hechos y eventos históricos relacionados a viajes espaciales. Claramente, somos conscientes de que es una película de ciencia ficción al final y al cabo, pero la forma en la que está hecha causa una impresión tal que es difícil de olvidar, incluso. Y si sumamos a esto los momentos o las escenas tan impactantes que tiene la película donde todo puede llegar a ocurrir podemos toparnos fácilmente con una de las mejores películas de la época. Todo esto es gracias a la genialidad de Ridley Scott de contar historias.

But we must also recognize the great acting and performance of the cast, as is the case with Matt Damon, who I consider to be one of the best actors I have known since I was a child. In this film, we can see his talent for portraying a character who is friendly, intelligent, and diligent at the same time. From the beginning, we can see that he proves to be an unusual person by not easily succumbing to despair after learning that he is completely alone on a planet far from Earth. His natural ability to make quick decisions and think about the future helps him get out of difficult situations in this desolate place.

We can definitely learn a few lessons from this great protagonist. Not only because of everything he experiences on Mars, but also because of the way he faces these difficulties and does not allow despair or loneliness to consume him completely. Other than that, I don't have much else to say about the other characters in this film, other than that they do a good job. One of the interesting things I've noticed about The Martian is the way it shows us how the top brass of large organizations such as NASA, in this case, make decisions. It's not unusual to see these characters portrayed as the villains of the film, but that's not entirely the case here.

Pero también tenemos que reconocer el gran trabajo actoral e interpretativo del elenco, como lo es el caso de Matt Damon, quien considero es uno de los mejores actores que he conocido desde pequeño. En esta película podemos notar su talento de hacer de un personaje alguien amigable, inteligente y diligente a la vez. Desde el principio podemos notar que demuestra ser una persona poco común al no sucumbir fácilmente a la desesperación luego de enterarse de que está completamente solo en un planeta ajeno a la tierra. Su forma natural de tomar decisiones rápidas y de pensar en el futuro le ayuda a salir de situaciones difíciles en este desolado lugar.

Definitivamente, podemos aprender un par de lecciones sobre este gran protagonista. No solo por todo lo que vive en Marte, sino por su forma de afrontar dichas dificultades y no permitir que la desesperación o la soledad lo consuma por completo. De resto, no tengo mucho más que opinar acerca de los demás personajes de esta película, más allá de que hacen un buen trabajo. Una de las cosas interesantes que he notado de The Martian es la forma en la que nos muestran cómo toman decisiones los altos mandos de grandes organizaciones como lo es la NASA en este caso. No es una novedad ver cómo convierten a estos personajes en los malos de la película, pero aquí no es del todo el caso.

Firstly, because the decisions made by these senior officers were purely procedural, following a series of unfortunate events and hasty decisions at the time. There are no culprits or anything of the sort here; we only see a realistic side of what astronauts may experience in an extraordinary situation, such as going on a space exploration mission to Mars, for example. However, we can also see how these decisions and subsequent events have a certain negative and psychological effect on the members involved. We are also shown how society or the general public views these events as something out of this world, literally.

In short, although it is not the type of space adventure story I usually watch, I consider The Martian to be one of those extraordinary exceptions that are well worth it. Especially with regard to its grand finale and how they manage to wrap everything up in such a fascinating way, full of emotion and tension that leaves you breathless. Scott definitely has a special touch when it comes to creating suspense in the dark and desolate outer space. On the other hand, another plus point for the film is its humor. This humor is mainly provided by Mark, with his particular way of being and narrating his space adventure in a very entertaining way, to be honest.

Primero porque aquellas decisiones que toman estos altos mandos fueron por puro protocolo, luego de una serie de eventos desafortunados y decisiones apresuradas al momento. Aquí no hay culpables ni nada por el estilo, solo vemos un lado realista de lo que pueden llegar a experimentar los astronautas en un caso súper extraordinario como lo es el de ir a una misión de exploración espacial a Marte, por ejemplo. Sin embargo, también podemos ver cómo dichas decisiones y los eventos posteriores causan cierto efecto negativo y psicológico a los miembros involucrados. También que se nos muestra cómo la sociedad o el público en general ve estos acontecimientos como un evento de otro mundo, literalmente.

En fin, si bien no es del tipo de historias de aventuras espaciales que acostumbro ver, considero que The Martian es una de esas excepciones extraordinarias que valen toda la pena del mundo. Sobre todo con lo que respecta a su gran final y cómo logran cerrar todo de una forma tan fascinante y repleta de emoción y tensión que te deja sin aliento incluso. Definitivamente, Scott tiene su toque especial en lo que respecta a generar suspenso en el oscuro y desolado espacio sideral. Por otro lado, otro punto a favor que tiene la película es el humor que posee como tal. Principalmente dicho humor lo protagoniza Mark con su particular forma de ser y de narrar su aventura espacial de una manera muy entretenida, la verdad.

However, we can also see some jokes, gags, and very clear references throughout this film. I repeat, Matt Damon's charismatic way of showing us the whole process he goes through to survive more than a year on Mars in such an entertaining and funny way is the best. But what his beloved exploration team does for him and how they manage to work so well together in the end is not far behind. Without a doubt, this story has everything anyone needs or looks for in a movie to watch from beginning to end. Honestly, I haven't seen The Martian many times; in fact, I can say that I've only seen it in its entirety a couple of times, but that was more than enough to bring it to you.

Last but not least, let's talk about the audiovisual aspect of this successful film. This is definitely what stands out the most from beginning to end. Ridley Scott redefined the way science fiction films were made in the past, and we can see his talent in The Martian just by looking at its photography, visual aesthetics, and unsurpassed shots. The views of Mars are fascinating, but we can also see a mixture of still and moving photography styles that create a very similar effect. The warm and cool color palette, computer-generated visual effects, and sound effects are top-notch. Even the soundtrack evokes an unparalleled sense of nostalgia and emotion. This is definitely one of those movies you have to see before you die.

Personally, I give it a rating of 9.5/10 in terms of the science fiction and adventure genre.

Sin embargo, también podemos ver algunos chistes, gags y referencias muy claras a lo largo de esta película. Repito, la manera tan carismática de Matt Damon a la hora de mostrarnos todo el proceso que él pasa para sobrevivir más de un año en Marte y de una forma tan entretenida y graciosa es de lo mejor. Pero tampoco se quedan atrás lo que su apreciado equipo de exploración hacen por él y cómo logran compaginar tan bien al final. Sin duda alguna, esta historia posee todo lo que cualquier persona necesita o busca en una película para verla de principio a fin. Honestamente, no son muchas las veces que vi The Martian, incluso puedo llegar a afirmar que fueron como un par de veces que la vi completa, pero fue más que suficiente para traerla ante ustedes.

Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos del apartado audiovisual de esta exitosa película. Esto es en definitiva lo que más llama la atención de principio a fin. Ridley Scott redefinió la forma de hacer películas de ciencia ficción en el pasado y podemos notar su talento en el caso de The Martian con solo ver su fotografía, estética visual y planos insuperables. Las vistas que nos muestran de Marte son de lo más fascinante, pero también podemos ver una mezcla de estilo de fotografía en pantalla fija y en movimiento que causa un efecto muy similar. La paleta de colores calientes y fríos, los efectos visuales hechos por computadora y los efectos de sonido son de lo mejor. Incluso su banda sonora genera una sensación nostálgica y emotiva sin igual. Definitivamente, esta es una de esas películas que tienes que ver antes de morir.

Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 9.5/10 en lo que respecta al género de ciencia ficción y aventura.
