The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) | Nattosheru Review [ENG/SPA]

Before Halloween (1978) and all the hype it caused in horror cinema in the 80s, 90s, and 2000s, there were great references that inspired the creators of characters like Michael Myers. One of these is The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, a raw, independent film that was quite strong even for the time it was released. Clearly, we are talking about the 1970s, a very different time from the one we live in now and even different from what was experienced decades later. Back then, censorship did not exist, and creativity was what received the most attention, especially if the stories had something so realistic to offer. And I understand why, since then, many of us believed that this film was really based on real events.

Undoubtedly, the marketing method used to sell us this film at the time was very successful, since, generations later, many of us are still traumatized just thinking about it. That's where I come in, a young man who, since childhood, watched these types of horror films with an obscene amount of gore and explicit scenes without any care or attention. Until very recently, I didn't remember the movie very well, only fragments and scenes that, thanks to their fame in cinema and popular culture today, I saw imitated in movies, series, and even cartoons to this day. However, I didn't need to know the movie well to recognize the level of horror it generated in me.

Antes de Halloween (1978) y toda la bomba que esto ocasionó en el cine de terror en los años 80, 90 y 2000; hubieron grandes referentes que inspiraron a los creadores de personajes como Michael Myers. Uno de estos es The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, una cinta cruda, independiente y bastante fuerte aún para la época en la que fue estrenada. Claramente, estamos hablando de los años 70, una época muy distinta a la que vivimos ahora e incluso diferente a lo que se vivió décadas después. En aquel entonces la censura no existía y la creatividad era lo que más se le daba atención, sobre todo si son historias con algo tan realista para ofrecer. Y entiendo por qué, desde entonces, muchos creíamos que esta película realmente estaba basada en hechos reales.

Indudablemente, el método de marketing que se utilizó para vendernos esta película en aquel entonces logró tener un gran éxito ya que, generaciones después, muchos nos hemos traumado con solo pensar en ella. Es ahí donde entro yo, un joven que desde pequeño veía este tipo de películas de terror con una cantidad obscena de gore y escenas explícitas sin ningún cuidado y atención. Hasta hace muy poco, no recordaba muy bien cómo iba esta película, solo recordaba fragmentos y escenas que, gracias a lo famosas que son en el cine y en la cultura popular actual, veía imitarse en películas, series y hasta caricaturas hasta el día de hoy. Sin embargo, no necesitaba conocer bien la película para reconocer el nivel de horror que esta me generaba.

Curiously, it is one of the few films from that era that has caused me such terror. And how could it not, with that opening scene? An introduction made as if this were a film based on a real-life case (which it is not, or at least not 100%). The scene of the macabre monument shown in the first few minutes is... more than enough to convince you that what you're about to see in the next hour and twenty minutes will be the most disturbing thing you've ever seen in your entire life. My God, this is true horror, raw and unrestrained for fear of censorship. Not like Halloween, which, while I admire John Carpenter's creativity, personally did not scare me at all, unlike this gem from Tobe Hooper.

Human and animal bones, decomposing corpses used for statues, furniture made from skeletons, turtle shell pendants (the latter reminded me of Cannibal Holocaust and was like reliving a childhood trauma); all this and more is what you will see in this film. The macabre and disturbing tone of this hour-and-a-half-long film, where everything you see this group of idiotic teenagers do will lead them to hell on earth. There are scenes that are quite strong, as well as scenes where everything happens so quickly, one after another, without pause. The jump scares you see here, although few in number, take your breath away because of how raw they are, unlike the typical scares you usually see.

Curiosamente, es de las pocas películas de aquella época que me han causado tanto terror así. Y cómo no hacerlo con dicho inicio que tiene. Una introducción hecha como si esto fuera un metraje basado en un caso de la vida real (cosa que no es así, o al menos no al 100%). La escena del monumento macabro que se muestra en los primeros minutos es… más que suficiente como para autogestionarse de que lo que verás en la siguiente hora con veinte minutos será lo más perturbador que habrás visto en toda tu vida. Dios mío, esto sí es terror, algo crudo y sin ataduras por miedo a la censura. No como Halloween que, si bien admiro la creatividad de John Carpenter, personalmente no me ha causado nada de terror, no como esta joyita de Tobe Hooper.

Huesos de humanos y animales, cadáveres en descomposición utilizados para estatuas, muebles hechos de esqueletos, colgantes de caparazones de tortugas (esto último me recordó a Holocausto Caníbal y fue como revivir un trauma de mi infancia); todo esto y más es lo que verás en esta película. El tono macabro e inquietante que posee este metraje de hora y media donde cualquier cosa que ves que hace este grupo de adolescentes idiotas los llevará a un infierno en la tierra. Hay escenas que son bastante fuertes, como también escenas donde todo llega a ocurrir de una forma tan rápida, subsecuente y sin pausa alguna. Los jumpscares que se ven aquí, si bien son muy pocos, te quitan el aliento por lo crudos que son, a diferencia de los típicos sustos de siempre.

It wouldn't be the first time I've seen a movie with cannibals as antagonists. I don't know if you remember that some time ago (about a year ago) I told you about Wrong Turn, a film from the 2000s that also became a classic. But unlike that film and many others about people who eat people, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre seems to focus not only on the theme of one or more people hunting humans, but also on something that inhabits this area of Texas. What this director achieves with this film is surprising, as he manages to create a certain sensation from beginning to end, from the moment the young people arrive at the cemetery until they leave that place. This feeling I'm talking about is similar to what anyone would feel if they were walking down a dark alley or in a neighborhood that you know is dangerous.

That feeling that something evil is lurking, not only in that place, but even in the people who live there. And when you think about how macabre people can become in certain situations of hunger and need, morality and ethics completely disappear from the picture and human beings cease to be civilized and become animals guided only by their basest instincts. In real life, there are cases of people like this, people who, due to a traumatic childhood, mental problems, or simple pure evil, decided to make those around them their cannon fodder, their livestock, their food. Unlike ghosts and haunted houses, the worst thing that can exist in real life is human evil itself. And this film recreates it in an incomparable way, without a doubt.

No sería la primera vez que veo una película de caníbales como antagonistas. No sé si recuerdan que hace tiempo (un año atrás, aproximadamente) les hablé de Wrong Turn que fue una cinta de los años 2000 que se convirtió en un clásico también. Pero, a diferencia de ésta y de muchas otras películas de gente que come gente, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre parece no solo centrarse en el tema de que hay uno o más personas que cazan humanos, sino de algo que habita en esta zona de Texas. Lo que consigue este director con esta cinta es sorprendente ya que consigue causar cierta sensación de principio a fin, desde que llegan los jóvenes al cementerio hasta que salen de ese lugar. Esta sensación de la que hablo se parece a la que cualquiera sentiría si fuera a caminar a un callejón oscuro o a un barrio que sabes es peligroso.

Esa sensación de que hay algo malo habitando, no solo en ese lugar, sino hasta en la gente que habita allí. Y cuando piensas en lo macabros que pueden llegar a ser las personas en ciertas situaciones de hambre y necesidad, lo moral y ético se escapa por completo del plano y el ser humano deja de ser civilizado para convertirse en un animal que solo se deja guiar por sus instintos más bajos. En la vida real hay casos de gente así, gente que, por una infancia traumática, problemas mentales o simple maldad pura decidieron hacer de los que le rodean su carne de cañón, su ganado, su alimento. A diferencia de los fantasmas y las casas embrujadas, lo peor que puede llegar a existir en la vida real es la propia maldad humana. Y esta película la recrea de una manera incomparable, sin lugar a dudas.

However, as expected, this film also has its little details that I completely dislike. To begin with, there is the main cast, more specifically the group of young people traveling in the van. It's not that I have anything against each actor or actress, but they are truly some of the most stupid and incompetent characters I have ever seen in my life. I understand that this is practically the second or third slasher film in history and that both the script and the way teenagers were portrayed at that time made them seem that way. But it's not like they make one bad decision after another, especially in a place that is known to be dangerous. They are literally the embodiment of teenage incompetence at that time.

And that's not even mentioning the fact that this film shows the strong belief they had at the time in the stars and "Saturn in retrograde" and other absurd things. I don't know if the director or screenwriter added those elements to the film just to add more drama to the introduction of everything that happens later in the second and third acts, but what a way to turn everything into an "act of fate and the stars". Honestly, it's better not to have an opinion about these types of people. There's also the case of one character in particular who, I really don't know why the hell they added to the story. Apart from dying in such a cruel and unexpected way, their introduction and development throughout the film was absurd, really.

Sin embargo, como no podía faltar, esta cinta tiene también sus detallitos que me desagradan por completo. Para empezar, está su elenco principal, más en específico el del grupo de jóvenes que van en la camioneta. No es que tenga algo en contra de cada actor o actriz, pero es que, de verdad, son de los personajes más estúpidos e incompetentes que he visto en mi vida. Entiendo que sea prácticamente la segunda o tercera película slasher de la historia y que tanto el guión como la forma de interpretar a un adolescente de aquella época hiciera que se vieran así. Pero tampoco es como para tomar una mala decisión tras otra y más en un lugar donde, se sabe, es peligroso. Literalmente, son la representación de la incompetencia adolescente de aquella época.

Y eso que no me pongo a hablar de que, justamente en esta película, se muestra la fuerte creencia que tenían en aquel entonces con el tema de los astros y “saturno en retroceso” y esas cosas absurdas. No sé si el director o guionista agregó esos elementos a la película nomás como para darle más drama a la introducción de todo lo que ocurre después en el segundo y tercer acto, pero vaya forma de convertir todo en un “acto del destino y las estrellas”. Mejor no opinión más de este tipo de gente, la verdad. También está el caso de un personaje en particular que, de verdad, no sé para qué rayos lo agregaron a la historia. Aparte de morir de una forma tan cruel e inesperada, su introducción y desarrollo a lo largo de la película fue absurdo, de verdad.

But anyway, apart from those details with that part of the cast of this film, I think they did an excellent job. Last but not least, let's talk about the audiovisual aspect of this film. With only $140,000 to produce it, Tobe Hooper worked wonders to get this film out. And despite its age, it feels like it has aged as well as wine. Especially because those details in the photography, the warm colors, the semi-realistic practical effects, and the poor makeup make it look perfect for a horror movie. The absence of computer-generated effects and elaborate visual transitions makes it look better as a horror film, unlike the others.

Another positive detail is the way they decorated the white house where almost everything happens. The living room, the dining room, the kitchen, the upstairs bedroom... everything looks like you're entering the house of Lucifer himself, for real. And let's not even talk about the appearance of the famous Leatherface, with his iconic mask made of human skin and hair (unlike Michael Myers' rubber mask) and his chainsaw cutting everything in its path. How many versions of masked killers has this character inspired since then? On the other hand, we must also mention the sound effects in the film, another of those specific elements that undoubtedly generate terror. Its soundtrack is something else, as there are scenes like "the dinner" at the end that are completely crazy. In short, a classic horror film that really does cause terror.

Personally, I give it a rating of 9/10 in terms of the horror genre.

Pero bueno, quitando esos detalles con esa parte del elenco de esta película, de resto yo opino que hicieron un excelente trabajo. Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos ahora del apartado audiovisual de esta película. Con tan solo 140.000 dólares para producirla, Tobe Hooper hizo maravillas para sacar esta película. Y a pesar de su época, se siente que envejeció tan bien como el vino. Sobre todo porque esos detalles en la fotografía, la plata de colores calientes, los efectos prácticos semi-realistas y el maquillaje pobre que tiene hacen que se vea perfecta para una película de terror. La ausencia de efectos hechos por computadora y de visuales con transiciones elaboradas hace que se vea mejor por ser una cinta de terror, a diferencia de las demás.

Otro detalle positivo que tiene es la manera en la que decoraron la casa blanca donde sucede casi todo. La sala, el comedor, la cocina, la habitación de arriba… todo se ve como si entraras a la casa del mismo Lucifer, de verdad. Y no hablemos del aspecto que tiene el famoso Leatherface, con su icónica máscara hecha de piel y cabello humano (no como la máscara de hule de Michael Myers) y su motosierra encima cortando todo a su paso. ¿Cuántas versiones de asesinos con máscaras habrá inspirado este personaje desde entonces? Por otro lado, hay que hablar también de los efectos de sonido que tiene la película, otro de esos elementos puntuales para generar terror, sin duda alguna. Su banda sonora es otra cosa ya que hay escenas como “la cena” del final que es una completa locura. En fin, una cinta clásica de terror que sí causa terror.

Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 9/10 en lo que respecta al género del terror.
