To be honest, even though I consider myself a big fan of Jim Carrey, I could barely remember seeing this movie even a couple of times in my life. The works he participated in that I have mostly seen and that have become most popular over the last few decades were comedies. In this case, I thought for a while that it was just another comedy film that didn't become very well known... until my frequent contact with the internet in recent years made me change my mind. My perception of The Truman Show has changed quite a bit recently, and I'm not just saying that because of the many edits I've seen on social media platforms like TikTok. But it would never have occurred to me that this film is also considered a science fiction gem.

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, what surely many of you reading this would not have thought either is that The Truman Show is a work of science fiction, more specifically of the dystopian subgenre. But as you can see, it is not just any dystopian film about a post-apocalyptic future or anything like that. Rather, it is more of a dystopian vision of reality itself, something that goes beyond a simple futuristic story. That's why the film also has a touch of drama and suspense, more specifically psychological, as it makes us think about complex issues such as the simulation of reality. Of course, it has its comical and romantic touch, as we see the well-known Jim Carrey playing his typical satirical and funny character, although much better constructed than any other role he has played.

Si les soy honesto, por muy fan de Jim Carrey que me considere, apenas pude recordar haber visto esta película siquiera un par de veces en mi vida. Los trabajos en los que participó que mayormente he visto y más se han popularizado a lo largo de estas últimas décadas fueron los de comedia. En este caso, pensé por un tiempo que era una cinta más de comedia que no llegó a ser tan conocida… hasta que mi contacto frecuente con el internet en estos últimos años me hicieron cambiar de opinión. Mi percepción sobre The Truman Show ha cambiado bastante recientemente y no solo lo digo por el montón de edits que he visto en redes sociales como TikTok. Pero nunca se me hubiera ocurrido pensar que esta cinta sea considerada también como una joya de la ciencia ficción.

Si señores, lo que seguramente a muchos de los que me leen tampoco se les hubiera ocurrido es que The Truman Show es una obra de ciencia ficción, más en específico del subgénero distópico. Pero como ven, no es cualquier cinta distópica de un futuro post-apocalíptico ni nada parecido. Sino que es más una visión distópica de la realidad misma, algo que va más allá de una simple historia futurista. Es por eso que la cinta también tiene su toque de drama y suspenso, más en específico psicológico ya que nos pone a pensar sobre temas complejos como la simulación de la realidad. Claro está, tiene su toque cómico y romántico, ya que vemos al conocido Jim Carrey hacer su típico personaje satírico y divertido, aunque muchísimo mejor construido que cualquier otro papel que haya hecho.

To do this, let's go back to the main plot: a person who has lived behind the cameras his entire life, in a show that airs 24/7 and is watched worldwide by millions of people. The curious thing about all this is that Truman Burbank, the star of this show, has no idea that he is being recorded and watched by thousands of cameras in countless locations. His daily life is normal and even predictable, without many changes and with many unfamiliar faces who are there to play their roles. All of this takes place inside a huge dome that has been built on the outskirts of Los Angeles. Everything is going well... until something falls from the sky. Truman picks up the lighting equipment with no idea what it is. But not only that, the next day he finds his father dressed as a beggar.

The strangeness does not end there, but just when Truman recognizes him, two people appear and kidnap the man, taking him away without our protagonist being able to do anything. It is clear that something strange is happening, and while the star of the show thinks about it, he remembers his past when he was in college and met a blue-eyed girl with whom he was instantly attracted. However, this person turns out to be just an "extra", someone who is only there and is not allowed to approach Truman. Nevertheless, this does not prevent them from meeting again and again until they finally escape and, on the beach, she tries to tell him the whole truth until she is taken away at the end. From there, he begins to develop a desire to go to Fiji, supposedly the place where she went.

Para esto, volvamos a hablar de su trama principal: una persona que ha vivido tras las cámaras toda su vida, en un show que se transmite 24/7 y es visto a nivel mundial por millones de personas. Lo curioso de todo esto es que Truman Burbank, la estrella de este show, no tiene ni idea de que está siendo grabado y visto por miles de cámaras en innumerables ubicaciones. Su vida cotidiana es normal y hasta predecible, sin tantos cambios y muchas caras poco conocidas que están para hacer sus papeles. Todo esto sucede dentro de un enorme domo que se ha construido en las afueras de Los Ángeles. Todo va bien… hasta que algo cae del cielo. Truman recoge ese equipo de luces sin idea de lo que es. Pero no solo eso, sino que al día siguiente se encuentra con su padre vestido de pordiosero.

Lo extraño no termina aquí, sino que justo cuando Truman lo reconoce aparecen dos personas y raptan al señor para llevárselo del sitio sin que nuestro protagonista pueda hacer algo. Queda claro que algo raro está sucediendo y mientras la estrella del show piensa en eso recuerda su pasado cuando iba a la universidad y conoció a una chica de ojos azules con quien se sintió atraído al instante. Sin embargo, esta persona resulta ser solo un “extra”, alguien que solo está ahí nomás y que no tiene permitido acercarse a Truman. Sin embargo, esto no evita que ambos se reencuentren una y otra vez hasta que luego escapan y, en la playa, ella intenta contarle toda la verdad hasta que se la llevan al final. Throughout the film, we not only see an endless sequence of patterns and events that occur around Truman's life, but we also learn a lot about our star and his dreams of traveling the world and going beyond the small town where he grew up and lived his entire life. We see that from the beginning, he seems restless, nervous about wanting to experience something new or go to the other side of the world. However, he has a problem, a trauma that has tormented him since childhood: the ocean. This is because his father (supposedly) drowned one stormy day when they went fishing. This phobia limits him greatly, since practically half of his surroundings are water. But even so, his desire to escape does not end there.

It's fantastic to see our funny Jim Carrey play a much more complex role than usual. The idea of pretending to be a television star who believes he is living a reality that is actually simulated inside a giant dome is something that would drive more than one person crazy (and I think it affected him too until recently). At first, we see the character acting in a comical yet pleasant way, very much in keeping with Jim's style. But then we see how everything evolves when he begins to see what is happening around him, such as the changes, mistakes, and flaws in this city. They do not allow him to go beyond where he has gone, no matter how hard he tries. For a moment, we even see him behaving like a lunatic, acting frantically and unexpectedly, all in order to see how those around him react and to confirm that everything he knows is not what he believed it to be his whole life.

A lo largo de la película no solo podemos notar una interminable secuencia de patrones y sucesos que ocurren alrededor de la vida de Truman, sino que también conocemos bastante de nuestra estrella y sus sueños de viajar por el mundo e ir más allá de esa pequeña ciudad en la que creció y vivió toda su vida. Vemos que desde el principio lo notamos algo inquieto, nervioso por querer experimentar algo nuevo o ir al otro lado del mundo. Sin embargo, tiene un problema, un trauma que desde pequeño lo ha atormentado y es el océano. Esto debido a que su padre (supuestamente) murió ahogado un día de tormenta que fueron de pesca. Esta fobia que tiene lo limita bastante ya que prácticamente la mitad de lo que lo rodea es agua. Pero aún así, su deseo de querer escapar no se acaba allí.

Es fantástico ver a nuestro gracioso Jim Carrey interpretar un papel mucho más complejo de lo normal. La idea de hacerse pasar por una estrella de televisión que cree vivir una realidad que realmente es simulada dentro de un domo gigante es algo que volvería loco a más de uno (y creo que hasta hace poco le afectó también). Al principio vemos que el personaje se desenvuelve de una forma cómica y a la vez agradable, muy acorde al estilo de Jim. Pero luego vemos cómo todo va evolucionando cuando empieza a ver lo que sucede a su alrededor como los cambios, los errores y las fallas que hay en esta ciudad. No le permiten ir más allá de donde ha ido sin importar lo mucho que lo intente. Por un momento incluso lo vemos comportarse como todo un lunático actuando de manera frenética e inesperada, todo con tal de ver cómo reacciona su alrededor y comprobar que todo lo que conoce no es lo que creyó que era toda su vida.

To a certain extent, we see him falling into one constant barrier after another that limits him from going beyond what he knows and escaping from this nightmare he is living. Thinking that everyone who knows him is behaving in such a predictable way just to please and entertain our star makes Truman realize that everything revolves around him. When we think it's all over with a forced attempt to close an unexpectedly dramatic event, we learn what it's like beyond the screens. Children, men, the elderly, families, neighbors, employees, people from all over the world have The Truman Show as their only means of entertainment. We also meet the man behind it all, Christof.

Honestly, I can't think of another example closer to reality than this film, really. It is now a fact that 99% of humanity is glued to a screen, which makes this late 90s film more of a prophecy come true than just a simple priceless gem of the film world (which it really is). Everything we see on our plasma TVs, computers, or smartphones is an endless list of commercials, shows, movies, and series that keep us entertained 24/7. This is what we see reflected in The Truman Show, with the sequences of the viewers and their reactions to everything I've told you so far and what ends up happening to our big star. Everything they do and everything they devote themselves to is for this great show that completely hypnotizes them.

Hasta cierto punto, lo vemos decaer en una constante barrera tras otra que lo limita a poder ir más allá de lo que conoce y escapar de esta pesadilla que está viviendo. Pensar también que todos los que lo conocen son gente que se comporta de una forma tan predecible solo para complacer y entretener a nuestra estrella hace que Truman se haga una idea de que todo gira a su alrededor. Cuando creemos que todo acabó con un intento forzado de cierre de un evento inesperadamente dramático, nos enteramos de cómo es todo más allá de las pantallas. Niños, hombres, ancianos, familias, vecinos, empleados, gente de todo el mundo tiene como su único medio de entretenimiento a The Truman Show. También conocemos al que está detrás de todo esto, Christof.

Sinceramente no encuentro otro ejemplo más cercano a la realidad que esta película, la verdad. Actualmente es un hecho que el 99% de la humanidad está pegada a una pantalla, lo cual hace que esta cinta de finales de los 90s sea más una profecía hecha realidad que solo una simple joya invaluable del mundo del cine (lo cual realmente es). Todo lo que vemos en nuestros televisores plasma, computadoras o smartphones son una interminable lista de anuncios comerciales, shows, películas y series que nos mantienen entretenidos 24/7. Esto es lo que vemos reflejado en The Truman Show, con las secuencias de los televidentes y sus reacciones a todo esto que les he contado hasta ahora y lo que termina ocurriendo con nuestra gran estrella. Truman, on the other hand, is a perfect example of how many people feel about their lives. Sometimes we may think that we are living in a simulated reality, a constant routine, a sequence of events and actions that can become predictable, with few changes and nothing new to report. We may feel trapped in a giant dome that limits our lives and all our dreams and aspirations. The reality we live in may be much crueler than the wonderful life Truman has. But when we think about it differently, we realize that society itself is guided by lies, simulations, performances, and elaborate shows so that the powerful remain at the top and the rest just follow in their footsteps.

Without a doubt, the third and final act of this film is an example to follow for those of us who feel like Truman. Sometimes taking risks may be the best option we have to see change. Sometimes we have to go against the tide, even if it knocks us out of our boat a thousand times. Sometimes we feel suffocated by pressure, obligations, or outside opinions, but as long as we can breathe, we can also raise the sails and continue sailing on this simulated ocean. If we want to reach the top and achieve our dreams, we often have to be unpredictable and spontaneous. I'm not one to talk about these things, but without a doubt, The Truman Show not only entertains but also inspires quite a bit.

Truman es, por otro lado, un ejemplo perfectamente hecho de lo que mucha gente siente con sus vidas. A veces podemos pensar que estamos viviendo una realidad simulada, una rutina constante, una secuencia de sucesos y acciones que pueden llegar a ser hasta predecibles sin tantos cambios ni nada nuevo por contar. Podemos llegar a sentirnos encerrados en un domo gigante que nos limita la vida y todos nuestros sueños y aspiraciones. Dicha realidad que vivimos puede que sea muchísimo más cruel que la maravillosa vida que tiene Truman. Pero cuando lo pensamos de otra forma nos damos cuenta de que la sociedad misma se guía por mentiras, simulaciones, actuaciones y shows elaborados con tal de que los grandes sigan en la cima y el resto solo siga sus pasos.

Sin duda alguna, el tercer acto y final de esta película es un ejemplo a seguir para los que llegamos a sentirnos así como Truman. A veces lo arriesgado puede ser la mejor opción que tenemos para ver algún cambio. A veces hay que ir en contra de la corriente, a pesar de que esto nos derrumbe de nuestro bote una y mil veces. A veces nos sentimos ahogados por la presión, las obligaciones o las opiniones exteriores, pero siempre y cuando podamos respirar podemos también alzar las velas y seguir navegando en este océano simulado. Si queremos llegar a lo alto y conseguir realizar nuestros sueños tenemos que ser impredecibles y espontáneos muchas veces. No soy mucho de hablar de estas cosas, pero sin duda alguna The Truman Show no solo entretiene sino que inspira bastante.

Returning to the film, I think the perfect blend of drama, humor, and romance is one of its best features. The script is so well done that from beginning to end, we see how everything connects quite well. From Truman's dream of traveling to Fiji to the way he ends up saying goodbye to everyone before walking through the door. Everything we see in the more than hour and a half of film is a great story of love, drama, lies, and illusions. And speaking of lies, something I found ironic about this film is that at the beginning it talks about the falseness of actors and television commercials, when in the end everything Truman experienced in that dome was a complete simulation. Even the people ended up being actors paid to play a role.

This form of self-contradiction allows us to clearly identify who was wrong and who was right in this film. On the one hand, we have Christof, the creator of the show and director of the entire conglomerate that built all of this. Feeling like the owner of his life, our antagonist does everything possible to prevent the star of his show from escaping what he knows. On the other hand, we have Truman Burbank, the star and the man whom everyone saw being born and growing up. The show's success is thanks to him. But even so, Christof treats him like an object, like a position rather than an ordinary human being. While one pretends to be God, the other does everything to go against the grain and escape at the end of this nightmare called reality that he knows.

Volviendo a la película, considero que la mezcla perfecta de drama con humor y romance es de lo mejor. El guión está tan bien hecho que de principio a fin notamos cómo todo se conecta bastante bien. Desde el sueño de Truman por viajar a Fiji hasta la forma en la que termina despidiéndose de todos antes de cruzar la puerta. Todo lo que vemos en las más de hora y media de película es una grandiosa historia de amor, drama, mentiras e ilusiones. Y hablando de mentiras, algo que me pareció irónico de esta cinta es que al principio se habla de la falsedad de los actores y las propagandas de televisión cuando al final todo lo que vivió Truman en ese domo fue una completa simulación. Incluso las personas terminaron siendo actores pagados para hacer un papel nomás.

Esta forma de contradecirse a sí misma hace que podamos identificar claramente quién estuvo mal y quién no en esta película. Por un lado tenemos a Christof, el creador del show y director de todo el conglomerado que construyó todo esto. Sintiéndose el dueño de su vida, nuestro antagonista hace todo lo posible para que la estrella de su show no escape de lo que conoce. Por otro lado, tenemos a Truman Burbank, la estrella y el hombre que todo el mundo vio nacer y crecer. El éxito que tiene el show es gracias a él. Pero aún así, Christof lo trata como un objeto, como una posición en vez de a un ser humano común y corriente. Mientras uno simula ser dios, el otro hace todo para ir en contra de la corriente y escapar al final de esta pesadilla llamada realidad que conoce.

The ending is simply majestic. I say this not only because it is symbolically significant, but also because it ends in such an unpredictable, satisfying, and fascinating way that it is difficult to forget. The lesson is clear in this film, so there is no need to recount it from beginning to end and risk spoiling everything just to describe everything I think and feel about this masterpiece. The film itself has everything you need to start watching it and not stop until the end. Without a doubt, it is like a letter to the seventh art, to the best of cinema of the last century. While many of us probably got to know it thanks to Jim Carrey, in the end we stay for its story and how perfectly made it is.

Last but not least, let's talk about the audiovisual aspects of this film. Perfectly produced and with a very precise use of practical effects, music, and photography, it is clear that what we see up to this point is a perfect example of how to make a good film. Despite its age, it looks so good that it stands as a timeless gem. What I like most visually are the camera styles, more specifically the different positions and views they show us. This, together with the television sequences, gives you the feeling of watching a reality show. The advertising scenes we see also give a familiar feeling of watching television from that era. The sound effects are good, but the best thing, without a doubt, is the soundtrack. Especially with the ending, which is simply pure art. This is definitely a movie you have to see at least once in your life.

Personally, I give it a 10/10 rating in terms of the science fiction, drama, and comedy genres.

El final es simplemente majestuoso. No solo lo digo porque simbólicamente significa mucho, sino por cómo termina todo de una manera tan impredecible, tan satisfactoria y tan fascinante que es difícil olvidarlo. La lección es clara en esta película, así que no hace falta relatarla de inicio a fin con el riesgo de spoilear todo nomás para describir todo lo que pienso y siento acerca de esta obra maestra. La misma cinta en sí tiene todo lo que se necesita para que empieces a verla y no pares hasta el final. Sin duda alguna es como una carta al séptimo arte, a lo mejor del cine de este último siglo. Si bien muchos seguramente llegamos a conocerla gracias a Jim Carrey, al final nos quedamos por su historia y por lo perfectamente hecha que está.

Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos del apartado audiovisual que tiene esta película. Perfectamente producida y con un uso muy exacto de los efectos prácticos, la música y la fotografía; está claro que hasta este punto lo que vemos es una muestra perfecta de cómo hacer una buena película. A pesar del tiempo que tiene, se ve tan bien que cumple con ser una joya atemporal. Lo que más me gusta visualmente son los estilos de cámaras, más en específico las distintas posiciones y vistas que nos muestran. Esto, junto con las secuencias de los televidentes le da esa sensación de estar viendo un reality show. Las escenas de publicidad que vemos también dan una sensación familiar de estar viendo la televisión de aquella época. Los efectos de sonido están bien, pero lo mejor, sin duda alguna, es la banda sonora. Sobre todo con lo que es el final, que simplemente es arte puro. Definitivamente, esta es una película que tienes que ver sí o sí al menos una vez en toda tu vida.

Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 10/10 en lo que respecta al género de ciencia ficción, drama y comedia.
