The Witch (2015) | Nattosheru Review [ENG/SPA]

I'm a little late in bringing you this review. I had planned to post it much earlier, but due to various circumstances, I wasn't able to. What's more, I've failed myself by not being as consistent as I had hoped to be during the month of October, and I've put off reviewing several horror movies. But anyway, at least I want to close this special in the best possible way with this film from the past decade, which is one of the few modern horror films that has really caught my attention. I confess that, before today, I hadn't seen it in its entirety, only the first ten minutes. But I think that was more than enough to bring it to you tonight.

Throughout this "Month of Horror", I've tried to bring you all kinds of films in this genre. While I've given a rating and review to certain classic films, I didn't want to overlook the modern ones either. That's why on this Halloween night, I bring you The Witch, a film that, for many, is a masterpiece of the last century. However, the type of horror in this film is known as "folk horror". This is a subgenre that is not new, but which, curiously, has gained a lot of strength and influence in recent decades. In this case, the film is set in 17th-century New England during the colonial era.

Llegué un poco tarde para traerles esta reseña. Tenía pensado subirla mucho antes, pero por diversas situaciones no pude hacerlo. Es más, he fallado conmigo mismo en no ser más constante de lo que esperaba durante este mes de octubre y he dejado de lado varias películas de terror para reseñar. Pero bueno, al menos quiero cerrar este especial de la mejor forma posible con esta película de la década pasada que es de las pocas cintas modernas y de terror que me han llamado bastante la atención. Desde ya les confieso que, antes que hoy, no la había visto completa, solamente los primeros diez minutos. Pero considero que eso fue más que suficiente para traerla esta noche.

Durante todo este “Mes del Terror” he intentado traerles todo tipo de películas de este género. Si bien le he dado una que otra calificación y crítica a ciertas entregas clásicas, tampoco quería dejar por alto lo moderno. Es por eso que en esta noche de Halloween les traigo The Witch, una cinta que -para muchos- es una obra maestra de este último siglo. Sin embargo, el tipo de terror que posee esta cinta es conocido como “terror folklórico”. Este es un subgénero que no es nuevo, pero que curiosamente ha ganado mucha fuerza e influencia en estas últimas décadas. En este caso, la película está ambientada en el siglo XVII, en Nueva Inglaterra durante la época de los colonos.

The story that unfolds over the course of this hour-and-a-half film revolves around a family of exiled puritans who begin living near a forest far from the city. Following the sudden disappearance of her youngest son, Samuel, Katherine has been praying every day and every night while crying for her little boy to "enter heaven". Meanwhile, William and little Caleb go into the woods to hunt and bring back food. Thomassin takes care of the twins, Mercy and Jonas, whom we see playing with a billy goat named Black Phillip. This family will go through one ordeal after another as strange things happen in this desolate place.

I don't know what others think about this, but lately I've realized that you only need to watch the first 10 minutes of a movie to know if it will be good or not. At least that's what I've noticed in some films I've seen that have impacted me from the beginning. In the case of The Witch, those few minutes are enough to perfectly introduce the viewer, while also disturbing them with a short sequence of completely visceral scenes. And it's this kind of thing that this film has from start to finish: scenes created in such a way that all you can think about is what the hell is about to happen.

La historia que veremos desarrollarse en esta hora y media de película gira en torno a una familia de puritanos exiliados que empiezan a vivir cerca de un bosque apartado de la ciudad. Tras la desaparición repentina de su último hijo, Samuel, Katherine ha estado rezando todos los días y todas las noches mientras llora para que su hijo pequeño “entre al cielo”. Por otro lado, William y el pequeño Caleb van al bosque a cazar y traer comida. Mientras tanto, Thomassin cuida de los gemelos Mercy y Jonas a quienes vemos jugar con un macho cabrío llamado Black Phillip. Esta familia vivirá un calvario tras otro mientras cosas extrañas ocurren en este lugar tan desolado.

No sé qué pensarán los demás al respecto, pero últimamente me he dado cuenta de que solo se necesitan ver los primeros 10 minutos de una película para saber si será buena o no. Al menos eso he notado en algunas cintas que he visto y que me han impactado desde el principio. En el caso de The Witch, solo basta con esos minutos para introducir de manera perfecta al espectador, a su vez que consigue perturba con una pequeña secuencia de escenas completamente viscerales. Y es este tipo de cosas las que posee esta película de principio a fin: escenas creadas a tal medida que lo único en lo que pienses es en qué rayos está por suceder.

There are no jump-scares, ghosts, or any other terrifying elements typical of this genre. Nor are there any scenes with computer-generated effects or things flying around and crazy people killing and dismembering. Everything you see in this feature film is designed to get your mind working and make you feel more and more disturbed as the minutes go by. This type of horror, as explained in other reviews I've brought you, is more psychological than physical or visual. What we see here is nothing more and nothing less than the story of a family of puritan christians who are tormented by witches, in a nutshell.

Except that what we see here are not the typical witches we all know from childhood with their giant cauldrons and flying broomsticks. No, what we see here is a very different interpretation, a little more faithful to what witches were supposedly believed to be at that time. Clearly, this does not detract from the fact that it is ultimately fantasy, and the film reveals this to us with its surreal ending. But the way it is made is so that we see these types of beings or creatures as something much more disturbing and dangerous than we imagined. Obviously, the film does not focus solely on this, as I said before, the puritan family takes center stage.

No tiene jumpscares, fantasmas ni ningún otro elemento aterrador típico de este género. Tampoco tiene ninguna escena con efectos hechos por computadora o cosas volando y gente loca matando y descuartizando. Todo lo que se ve en este largometraje está hecho para que tu mente empiece a maquinar y te perturbes cada vez más y más a medida que pasan los minutos. Este tipo de terror, explicado anteriormente en otras reseñas que les he traído, es más psicológico que físico o visual. También que lo que vemos aquí es ni más ni menos que la historia de una familia de cristianos puritanos que es atormentada por brujas, en resumidas cuentas.

Solo que, lo que vemos aquí no son las típicas brujas que todos conocemos desde pequeños con sus ollas gigantes y sus escobas voladoras. No, lo que vemos aquí es una interpretación muy diferente y un poco más fiel a lo que, supuestamente, han creído que son las brujas en aquella época. Claramente, no quita el hecho de que sea fantasía al final y la cinta nos lo revela con su cierre que es… surrealista. Pero la forma en la que está hecha es para que veamos a este tipo de seres o criaturas como algo mucho más perturbador y peligroso de lo que imaginábamos. Obviamente, la cinta no solo se centra en esto, ya que como les dije antes, el protagonismo se lo lleva la familia de puritanos.

This is where you could say that the psychological aspect takes center stage, as we see this family suffer these events while living near the forest. The way each character—especially William, Katherine, and Thomassin—begins to break down mentally as time passes and things become more and more surreal is one of the most fascinating aspects of this film. Who doesn't like to see a group of completely isolated people face a series of situations that will test their beliefs and way of thinking until they become complete lunatics? This is just one of the good things about psychological horror.

Another thing this film has going for it is the number of elements and settings that are perfectly crafted to make you think about what is happening. The signs we see, the objects, the attitude and form of the anime characters, the locations, and whatever else is in that forest are just some of the many things that make this film a horror gem. It seems as if the film is constantly pointing out to us what all this we are seeing is about. The only difference between this and any other horror film is the way it generates tension and disturbance in each of its scenes. The craziest thing is that it doesn't seem to care about being as visually disturbing as possible.

Aquí es donde se puede decir que lo psicológico se lleva una gran parte de la atención al ver a esta familia sufrir dichos acontecimientos mientras viven cerca de este bosque. La forma en la que cada personaje -sobre todo William, Katherine y Thomassin- empieza a quebrarse mentalmente mientras pasa el tiempo y las cosas se vuelven más y más surrealistas es de lo más fascinante que tiene esta película. ¿A quién no le gusta ver a un grupo de personas completamente aisladas afrontar una serie de situaciones que pondrán a prueba sus creencias y su forma de pensar hasta convertirse en completos lunáticos? Esta es solo una de las cosas buenas que tiene el terror psicológico.

Otra cosa que tiene esta película es la cantidad de elementos y escenarios perfectamente hechos para que te pongas a pensar en lo que está sucediendo. Las señales que vemos, los objetos, la actitud y forma de los animes, los lugares y lo que sea que haya en ese bosque son solo algunas de las muchas cosas que hacen de esta cinta una joya del terror. Pareciera como si la película nos señalase en cada momento de qué trata todo esto que estamos viendo. La única diferencia de ésta a cualquiera otra película de terror es su forma de generar esa tensión y perturbación en cada una de sus escenas. Lo más loco es que pareciera no preocuparse por ser lo más visualmente perturbador posible.

I say this because we see scenes of nudity, death, and moments that are difficult to process. It also has a few scenes that are simply surreal and leave you hallucinating. But the most shocking thing is how each character ends up succumbing more and more to this series of tricks and disturbing moments that we see in this film. For their part, I admit that this cast of actors does not do so badly, especially the one who plays the protagonist. Leaving aside the ending, there are scenes that are simply surprising because of how each of the characters behaves. Let's remember that we are talking about a family of puritans.

So all the dialogues and monologues we will hear and see are related to their beliefs in God and how "the sin" and "the Devil" cause them to fall deeper and deeper into one suffering after another. The film itself also greatly influences how we see everything that is happening as a diabolical act by an unknown entity. However, we are constantly distracted by differences and problems within this family, which is spiritually divided after the first incident. It is here that we notice both a breakdown and a total destruction of their faith before and during the dark and disturbing conclusion shown to us at the end.

Esto último lo digo ya que vemos escenas de desnudos, muertes y momentos que son difíciles de procesar. También tiene una que otra escena que es simplemente surrealista y te deja alucinando. Pero lo más impactante es cómo cada personaje termina sucumbiendo cada vez más ante esta serie de tretas y momentos inquietantes que vemos en esta película. Por su parte, admito que este elenco de actores no lo hace tan mal, sobre todo la que interpreta a la protagonista. Dejando de lado el final, hay escenas que son simplemente sorprendentes por cómo se desenvuelve cada uno de los personajes. Recordemos que estamos hablando de una familia de puritanos.

Así que todos los diálogos y monólogos que escucharemos y veremos están relacionados con sus creencias en Dios y en cómo “el pecado” y “el Diablo” los hace caer cada vez más en un sufrimiento tras otro. La película en sí también influye mucho en cómo vemos todo lo que está ocurriendo como un acto diabólico por parte de una entidad desconocida. Sin embargo, constantemente nos distraen con diferencias y problemas entre esta familia que está dividida espiritualmente, luego del primer incidente. Es aquí donde notamos tanto un quiebre y una destrucción total de su fe antes y durante la oscura y perturbadora conclusión que nos muestran al final.

As for the ending, I don't want to say too much about it because I think the director and creator of this story went a little overboard in recreating a scene that simply doesn't make sense. I don't know if it's because it reminded me of what we all know about witches or simply because it's so surreal that it's hard to see anything good in it. It's not a happy ending, I warn you, so don't get your hopes up too much, really. Maybe it's just me who thinks so, since, like everything else in this movie, this ending seems to be made more for each person's interpretation. But even so, it doesn't take away from the fact that the film in general fascinated me in a rather disturbing way.

Lastly, and surely most importantly, let's talk about the audiovisual aspect of this film. With a budget of only four million dollars, this film achieved such an impact and success that it is surprising. Both the photography and the aesthetics and setting are fascinating. In addition, it is what stands out the most and influences everything that happens. The fixed cameras, slow-motion cameras, cool color palette, dark tones, natural lighting, fixed shots with blurred backgrounds, and appropriate use of practical effects are top-notch. The sound effects also play a very important role, as does the amazing soundtrack. In short, this film is perfect if you're looking for something that will truly disturb you.

Personally, I give it a 9.5/10 rating in terms of the folk/supernatural horror genre.

En cuanto al final, no quiero hablar mucho al respecto ya que pienso que el director y creador de esta historia se le fue un poco la mano el recrear una escena que, simplemente, no tiene sentido. No sé si es porque me hizo recordar lo que todos conocemos sobre las brujas o por el simple hecho de que sea tan surrealista que es difícil verle algo bueno a esto. No es un final feliz, advierto, así que no se ilusionen mucho, de verdad. Tal vez y sea solo yo quien piense así, ya que como todo lo demás en esta película, este final parece estar hecho más como para interpretación de cada quien. Pero aún así, no quita el hecho de que la cinta en general me haya fascinado en un sentido bastante perturbador.

Por último y seguramente más importante, hablemos del apartado audiovisual de esta película. Con un presupuesto de tan solo cuatro millones de dólares, esta cinta consiguió un impacto y éxito tal que es sorprendente. Tanto la fotografía como la estética y ambientación que tiene es fascinante. Además de que es lo que más se destaca e influye en todo lo que sucede. Las cámaras fijas, las cámaras en movimiento lento, la paleta de colores fríos, los tonos oscuros, la iluminación natural, los planos fijos con fondos desenfocados y el uso adecuado de efectos prácticos es de lo mejor. Los efectos de sonido también tienen un papel muy importante, al igual que la banda sonora que es alucinante. En fin, esta película es perfecta si buscas algo que te perturbe de verdad.

Personalmente, les doy una calificación de 9.5/10 en lo que respecta al género de terror folklórico/sobrenatural.
