You Don't Mess with The Zohan (2008) | Nattosheru Review [ENG/SPA]

Hello, cinema fans. Today I’m bringing you another bizarre and absurd comedy from one of the most controversial and “cancelable” actors and comedians in all of Hollywood. It’s one of those satirical comedies that was only meant to entertain at the time, regardless of whether it ended up taking on an entire continent. You Don’t Mess with the Zohan was directed by Dennis Dougan and stars Adam Sandler (who also co-wrote the screenplay), John Turturro, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Nick Swardson, and others. Check out another one of Adam Sandler’s worst movies ever.

Plot
The movie begins on a beach with a crowd of people surrounding our protagonist, who is walking in slow motion wearing shorts and a T-shirt. We see him dancing, doing somersaults while playing with a ball, and playing jump rope with a bull, all while a catchy song plays in the background. Suddenly, when he wins, a sycophant calls him Zohan and tells everyone not to mess with him. Then we see him preparing what appears to be grilled fish with something called “hummus” while playing tennis with a group of girls completely naked.
Trama

Trailer & Review

Here's the trailer for the movie:

If Adam Sandler’s previous movie was already awkward enough and kind of “cancel-worthy” to watch, this movie I’m bringing you today is a thousand times more absurd, immature, and “cancel-worthy.” It was produced and released at a time when Happy Madison Productions (Adam Sandler’s production company) wasn’t afraid of anything and churned out movie after movie with plots and elements that were both funny and offensive to certain cultures and societies. In this case, You Don’t Mess with the Zohan aims to present a satirical story referencing the war between Saudi Arabia and Israel that was ongoing at the time.
But not only that—it also offers a strange mix of action, science fiction, and stale, adult-oriented humor that only Adam Sandler could come up with. From the opening minutes I described above, it’s clear what this satirical film is all about. It begins in the most evocative, absurd, and mind-blowing way possible with a protagonist named “The Zohan,” who is a sort of super soldier. However, seeing that the war in his country never ends, he decides to fake his death and go to the United States to fulfill his dream of becoming a hairstylist.

Yeah, the plot is total nonsense—not only because it starts out as an absurd, comic-book-style reference complete with Israeli names and accents, but also because it turns into some kind of adventure about an Israeli guy trying to live out his “Americsn Dream,” all while falling in love and blah, blah, blah. Not only does the plot have twists and nonsensical elements that are best ignored, but its mix of Palestinian, Arab, Israeli, and who-knows-what-else characters—with those accents, strange customs, and constant jokes or references—is the most random thing I’ve ever seen in my life.
The worst part is that this is yet another one of the many Adam Sandler movies I watched countless times on TV as a kid—since it was the only thing on—and, for some reason I still don’t understand to this day, it actually entertained me quite a bit. Even though I never really understood most of the racist jokes about Arabs or Palestinians—their tastes, food, drinks, arguments, and so on. Another thing I admit made me laugh back then—and which I’m actually embarrassed to admit now—are the suggestive and sexual jokes and scenes in the movie.

I’ll just say that Zohan—this absurd mix of an Israeli super-soldier, dreamer, womanizer, and party animal—is complete nonsense. Either you’ll find yourself entertained by Adam Sandler’s lead performance in this movie, or you’ll simply hate it with a passion. There’s no middle ground, since his personality, his humor, and the things he does will either make you laugh or offend you so much that you’ll end up cursing this movie. Something that intrigues me is that, even back when they were planning to make this movie, some people considered it quite indecent.
So imagine what it would have been like if it had been released in theaters today—many people would definitely be “canceling” it on social media because of everything it has to show us. And not only that, but you can see just how sensitive the media and entertainment industry have become in recent years—to the point where any satirical comedy that tries to poke fun at a country, society, or community gets completely canceled. That’s why I much prefer the humor of the past—from around my time—when there were absolutely no filters or censorship whatsoever.

However, You Don't Mess with the Zohan is a perfect example of how a comedy doesn't need to make sense to be entertaining. While I know almost nothing about the humor that exists between the United States and Israel, or the war in the Middle East, or any other kind of jokes in this movie besides physical or sexual ones, the film always finds a way to make you laugh at just about anything. Every minute is packed with nonsensical scenes that are actually funny. Not to mention one of the wildest and most absurd performances ever seen from Adam Sandler.
It’s as if Zohan were the Israeli version of the famous Superman, complete with jokes about “stopping a bullet with his fingers”—though in Adam Sandler’s case, he even does it with his nose. But it’s not just these jokes and moments of action and humor that entertain—it’s also the absurd mix of awkward or ridiculous moments that make up most of the movie. One thing I really don’t like is its length, since the movie reaches a point where it becomes predictable and a bit exhausting just before its absurd ending. It’s nowhere near Sandler’s best comedy.

It could even easily compete with other terrible Adam Sandler movies for the title of the worst in his entire filmography. And it would achieve that with ease if it weren’t for its stunning, state-of-the-art cinematography and audiovisual production, which not only highlights the golden moments of America but also manages to elevate the humor and entertainment value of every absurd scene to an almost professional level. The camera angles, the interplay of lighting and cinematography, and the blend of visual effects and precise cuts give this film a distinctive touch.
The best part is how the director manages to use these camera angles, cinematographic techniques, and cuts to sometimes simulate the protagonist’s “superhuman” abilities. Not to mention the film’s blend of light, shadow, and vibrant color palettes. The visual effects—both practical and computer-generated—aren’t too bad for the time, either. The same goes for the sound effects, but I’ll always prefer the soundtrack because of how nostalgic it is—thanks to Adam Sandler’s great musical taste. That’s how one of Sandler’s worst movies came to be—it’s up to you to decide whether to watch it or not.
Personally, I give it a 5/10 rating in the comedy, action, and science fiction genres.
