Scratch (2001)

In this post I'm going to tell you about Scratch, a documentary made in 2001, directed by Doug Pray, in which through images, fragments of videos, interviews and shots recorded for the piece...
Teach us how the world of the dj started and the different methods and techniques that were developed to give a new meaning/use/form to music, with the use of turntables, plates and vinyls.
Hip hop is a movement, a culture, a way of life. This is very well evidenced in the documentary, all the interviewees speak with such vigorousness that it is impossible not to be infected by that energy, and even more so when you are an enthusiast of organic social movements, of people who seek to express themselves/emprove their enviroments through artistic creation.
It is a very educational documentary, there were many technicalities within the dj world that I didn't know and now through this piece I was able to know them and appreciate them even more. The filming transports you to each era, since the beginnings of all this could be said to be in the 70's, interviewing precursors in the scene such as Afrika Bambaattaa (also creator of Universal Zulu Nation), Yoga Frog, Gran Mixer DXT, DJ Jazzy Jay, among others. However, it has quite a 90s vibe to it.
When they suddenly use the word "juggling"(malabarism) I thought "wtf?!" and then they explained the whole concept: they had to
"juggle" the vinyls to change records while continuing with the music and so beat-juggling was born, for me it became even more present that all the subcultures and arts are connected to each other.
It left me with a feeling of hype, energy and satisfaction to see that documentary, to imagine all the research work that was behind it, the technical aspects and the energy it emanates, to deal with all these hip hop greats and to see their enthusiasm even after so many years.
At the end of the screening there was a conversation with one of the first hip hop DJs in Peru, Dj Pedro Gonzaga, who was a guest. It was very interesting to hear how the movement was born in Peru and to see that it is all about a feeling, wanting to escape from a reality (something common in most cases) that in the neighborhoods of Peru in the 70s and 80s was very complicated due to terrorism and political and economic problems.
Needless to say, highly recommended, whether you are interested in the cinematographic or musical genre! En este post voy a contarles sobre Schatch, un documental realizado en 2001, dirigido por Doug Pray, en el que a través de imágenes, fragmentos de videos, entrevistas y tomas grabadas para la pieza...
Nos enseñan como comenzó el mundo del dj y los diferentes métodos y técnicas que fueron desarrollando para darle un nuevo sentido/uso/forma a la música, con el uso de torna mesas, platos y vinilos.
El hip hop es un movimiento, una cultura, una forma de vida. Esto queda muy bien evidenciado en el documental, todos los entrevistados hablan con tanta vigorosidad que es imposible no contagiarse de esa energía, y más aun cuando eres entusiasta de los movimientos sociales orgánicos, de personas que buscan expresarse/ mejorar sus entornos a través de la creación artística.
Es un documental muy educativo, habian muchos tecnicismos dentro del mundo dj que no conocía y ahora por esta pieza pude conocerlos y apreciarlos más aún. El rodaje te transporta a cada época, ya que los inicios de todo esto podría decirse que fueron en los 70's, entrevistando a precursores en la escena como lo fueron Afrika Bambaattaa(también creador de Universal Zulú Nation), Yoga Frog, Gran Mixer DXT, DJ Jazzy Jay, entre otros. Sin embargo, tiene una vibra bastante noventosa.
Cuando de repente usan la palabra "juggling"(malabar en inglés) pensé "wtf?!" y luego explicaron todo el concepto: debían hacer "malabares" con los vinilos para cambiar de disco mientras seguían con la música y así nació el beat-juggling, para mí se hizo aún más presente que todas las subculturas y formas artisticas están conectadas entre sí.
Me dejo una sensación de hype, energia y satisfacción ver ese documental, imaginar todo el trabajo de investigación que estuvo detrás, los aspectos técnicos y la energía que emana, tratar con todos estos grandes del hip hop y ver su entusiasmo aún después de tantos años.
Al finalizar la proyección se hizo un conversatorio con uno de los primeros Djs de hip hop de Perú, Dj Pedro Gonzaga, que estaba como invitado. Fue muy interesante escuchar como nació el movimiento en Perú y constatar que todo se trata de un sentir, querer escapar de una realidad (algo común en la mayoría de casos) que en los barrios de Perú en los años 70s y 80s era muy complicada debido al terrorismo y problemas políticos y económicos.
