Una atiborrada y avanzada ciudad retro-futurista ciberpunk llamada Metrópolis se encuentra distribuida en niveles, donde hay segregación entre los seres humanos (ricos y pobres) y los robots.

Esta ciudad está planificada verticalmente, al estilo de los otras famosas metrópolis cinematográficas, como las de Fritz Lang en su famosa película Metrópolis o la ciudad de Ridley Scott en Blade Runner.

El primer nivel lo constituye la ciudad normal, el segundo es la parte subterránea de la ciudad donde viven los humanos desprestigiados, el tercero es lugar donde se crean los robots y se les hace mantenimiento, mientras que en el último se encuentran las fuentes de energía de la ciudad y de las maquinas.
Esta es una sociedad se vanagloria por su impresionante desarrollo tecnológico, el cual está reflejado en la gigantesca torre de nombre Zigurat que se alza en el centro de la ciudad. Este edificio también presenta propósitos militares al albergar poderosas armas.
En la antigua Mesopotamia el zigurat era un lugar sagrado en donde se adoraban a los dioses, y se creía que estos habitaban en los pisos superiores de la estructura. Este lugar también cumplía una función administrativa y política, los gobernantes lo utilizaban como residencia y centro de Gobierno, siendo esto lo que ocurre con este edificio en la película.

El Duque Rojo , gran líder de "Metrópolis", dirige y controla, tareas que son ejecutadas por robots, adicionalmente muchas áreas están restringidas tanto para los humanos de determinada clase, como para los robots.

A los robots y a los humanos no se les permite tener contacto entre ellos, por lo que existe una organización llamada Marduk, que protege a las personas de los robots destruyéndolos sin preocupación alguna.
Las clases sociales más bajas no acceden a los trabajos que podían estar destinados para ellos, provocando el inicio de una revolución.
Un detective privado japonés llamado Shunsaku Ban junto a su sobrino Kenichi y un robot detective investigan en esta ciudad la ubicación de un científico que hace experimentos ilegales, pero terminan por entrometerse con los oscuros secretos y planes del Duque Rojo, así, se acercan al lado más oscuro de Metrópolis descubriendo una conspiración del Gobierno para dominar el mundo.

En medio de todo esto, el científico acusado de crímenes internacionales, el Dr. Laughton crea a imagen y semejanza de la desaparecida hija del Duque Rojo una bella humanoide destinada a ser la líder de Metrópolis y del mundo, su nombre es: Tima.
Rock Holmes, el hijo adoptivo del Duque Rojo y líder de los Marduk, se dirige a una fábrica antigua oculta en el nivel 2 (nivel donde viven humanos) para destruirla ya que se entera de la construcción de esta androide, la cual sería su sucesora como líder de los Marduk .

Kenichi rescata a Tima de los escombros cayendo al nivel más bajo de la ciudad, en las alcantarillas juntos, Kenichi la interroga, pero ella simplemente repite lo que él dice.
Kenichi le enseña a Tima cómo hablar correctamente y qué significan palabras como quién, y yo. Regresan a la superficie, pero son interceptados por Rock, quien descubre que Tima sobrevivió. Rock intenta matarlos, pero logran evadirlo. Finalmente, son acogidos por un grupo de trabajadores que dirige un hombre llamado Atlas. Durante este tiempo, Tima recuerda su nombre y aprende a deletrearlo.

Atlas y sus trabajadores organizan una revolución contra el Duque Rojo y Tima y Kenichi son testigos del ataque, y de la matanza. Mientras tanto el Duque Rojo asesina al presidente y al alcalde para convertirse en el líder oficial de Metrópolis. Tima es herida por Rock y observa el agujero de bala en su propio pecho dándose cuenta que es un robot. Al percatarse de su verdadera identidad y propósito, Tima sufre un brote psicótico se sienta en el trono ubicado en el zigurat y activa las superarmas, comenzando un ataque en contra de la humanidad para vengar el trato dado a los robots. Todos los robots de Metrópolis quedan bajo su mando y comienzan a atacar a todos.

En este ambiente de destruccion, Kenichi intenta alcanzar a Tima y sacarla del trono. Sin embargo, la superarma carga, bajan los mecanismos y comienzan a rodearla, inyectando sus cables en su espalda.
Rock despierta y ve a su padre rodeado de robots, sobrecarga el arma del Zigurat, que libera una explosión que lo mata a él, a su padre y a todos los robots que lo circundan. La sobrecarga hace que Zigurat comience a desmoronarse y colapsar.
Kenichi logra sacar a Tima del trono, pero su mente ha sido transformada por una combinación entre la locura y el funcionamiento del Zigurat. Ella comienza a atacarlo, lo acorrala y lo estrangula, pero sus mecanismos internos se sobrecargan y se apagan, asi ella y Kenichi caen a las vigas de metal de abajo.

Tima cuelga inconsciente, Kenichi la alcanza y comienza a levantarla mientras los cables se rompen lentamente bajo la tensión. Este agarra su mano justo cuando el cable se rompe, ella comienza a reactivarse y piensa en el momento en que Kenichi le enseñó a hablar y le pregunta: "¿Quién soy yo?" para luego caer y morir cuando el resto del Zigurat es destruido.
Más tarde, Kenichi abre un taller que lleva el nombre de él y el de Tima, y se insinúa que ella podría haber sido reconstruida.
La escena que me impacto en el film ocurre cuando la ciudad estalla y Tima se debate entre su anterior creencia de que era humana y su actual estado paranoico y atormentado que le impulsa a destruir a toda la raza humana, y Kenichi, impulsado por su amor; desea recordarle que él es su amigo, y no duda en arriesgar su propia vida humana para intentar salvarla.
Esto ocurre acompañado por el tema cantado por Ray Charles I can´t stop loving you lo que dota de ironía y romanticismo a un final apocalíptico, y tímidamente esperanzador.

Metrópolis es una obra maestra, una película que presenta un androide con sentimientos y un escenario retro, merece la pena coleccionarla.
Katsuhiro Otomo, es un autor caracterizada por un pesimismo apocalíptico y por la fascinación hacia la biotecnología y la violencia. Fue el director de Akira y en este film es el escritor el guion de esta ambiciosa adaptación de la mítica historieta de Osamu Tezuka, el primer maestro del manga (comics) y el anime japoneses.
En la película hay combates violentísimos, poéticas escenas románticas, conflictos familiares y críticas a la ciencia radical y al racismo. Hay un increíble despliegue visual que realiza su director Rintaro lleno de barrocos escenarios retro futuristas, con una excelente animación en 2D y 3D, hay mucho detalle en los dibujos, los escenarios están llenos de vida y se muestra una lucha entre robots y humanos muy bien recreada, todo esto acompañado por una espléndida banda sonora plagada de de jazz.

Desde el primer minuto este anime me dejo atado a mi asiento por su atrapante diseño visual, y hoy 22 años después volví a visualizar el film y a mi juicio es muy superior a muchos otros de Pixar, Disney, y Dreamworks por su estilo de animación y por la historia que aborda.
Metrópolis de Osamu Tezuka, (creador de Astroboy ); es un manga del año 1949, con una trama que con elementos de robótica, naturaleza humana, inteligencia artificial; moral y desastres ecológicos que pueden incidir en el futuro de la humanidad.
Metrópolis el anime se estreno en el año 2001, siendo producida por el estudio Madhouse fue dirigida por Hayashi Shigeyuki (Rintaro) contando con Katsuhiro Otomo (Akira) a cargo del guión, la dirección artística es de Shuichi Hirata, y la banda sonora pertenece a Toshiyuji Honda. Se basa en un comic japones de Osamu Tezuka a quien muchos apodaban el dios del manga.
Esta es mi crítica y revisión a anime Metrópolis, recomiendo ampliamente que la vean, gracias por dedicar tiempo a leer la presente reseña, es un placer saludarlos. He aprendido mucho de la comunidad y leo excelentes reseñas con relación a los temas de anime y el mundo friki.

The first level is the normal city, the second is the subway part of the city where the discredited humans live, the third is where the robots are created and maintained, while the last is where the city's power sources and machines are located.
This is a society that boasts for its impressive technological development, which is reflected in the gigantic tower named Ziggurat that rises in the center of the city. This building also has military purposes by housing powerful weapons.
In ancient Mesopotamia, the ziggurat was a sacred place where the gods were worshipped, and it was believed that they lived on the upper floors of the structure. This place also served an administrative and political function, the rulers used it as a residence and center of government, which is what happens with this building in the film.

Robots and humans are not allowed to have contact with each other, so there is an organization called Marduk, which protects people from robots by destroying them without concern.

A Japanese private detective named Shunsaku Ban together with his nephew Kenichi and a robot detective investigate in this city the location of a scientist who makes illegal experiments, but they end up meddling with the dark secrets and plans of the Red Duke, thus, they approach the darkest side of Metropolis discovering a conspiracy of the Government to dominate the world.

In the midst of all this, the scientist accused of international crimes, Dr. Laughton creates in the image and likeness of the missing daughter of the Red Duke a beautiful humanoid destined to be the leader of Metropolis and the world, her name is: Tima.
Rock Holmes, the adoptive son of the Red Duke and leader of the Marduk, goes to an ancient factory hidden on level 2 (level where humans live) to destroy it since he learns of the construction of this android, which would be his successor as leader of the Marduk.

Kenichi rescues Tima from the rubble by falling to the lowest level of the city, in the sewers together, Kenichi interrogates her, but she simply repeats what he says.
Kenichi teaches Tima how to speak correctly and what words like who, and I mean. They return to the surface, but are intercepted by Rock, who discovers that Tima survived. Rock tries to kill them, but they manage to evade him.
Finally, they are taken in by a group of workers led by a man named Atlas. During this time, Tima remembers his name and learns to spell it.

Atlas and his workers organize a revolution against the Red Duke and Tima and Kenichi witness the attack, and the slaughter. Meanwhile the Red Duke assassinates the president and the mayor to become the official leader of Metropolis. Tina witnessing the insurrection of the workers and the smashing of a robot wonders why the violence and barbaric actions.

Tima is wounded by Rock but and observes the bullet hole in his own chest realizing that he is a robot. Upon realizing his true identity and purpose, Tima suffers a psychotic break and sits on the throne located in the ziggurat and activates the superweapons, starting an attack against humanity to avenge the treatment given to the robots. All the robots in Metropolis come under his command and begin to attack everyone.

In this environment of destruction, Kenichi tries to reach Tima and pull her off the throne. However, the superweapon charges, they lower the mechanisms and begin to surround her, injecting their wires into her back.
Rock wakes up and sees his father surrounded by robots, he overloads the Ziggurat's weapon, which releases an explosion that kills him, his father and all the robots surrounding him. The overload causes Ziggurat to begin to crumble and collapse.
Kenichi manages to get Tima off the throne, but her mind has been transformed by a combination of insanity and the Ziggurat's workings. She starts attacking him, cornering him and strangling him, but her internal mechanisms overload and shut down, so she and Kenichi fall to the metal beams below.

Tima hangs unconscious, Kenichi reaches for her and begins to lift her up as the cables slowly snap under the strain. He grabs her hand just as the wire breaks, she begins to reactivate and thinks back to the moment Kenichi taught her to speak and asks, "Who am I?" only to fall and die as the rest of the Ziggurat is destroyed.
Later, Kenichi opens a workshop named after him and Tima, and it is hinted that she may have been rebuilt.
The scene that struck me in the film occurs when the city explodes and Tima is torn between her former belief that she was human and her current paranoid, tormented state that drives her to destroy the entire human race, and Kenichi, driven by his love; he wishes to remind her that he is her friend, and does not hesitate to risk his own human life to try to save her.
This occurs accompanied by the theme sung by Ray Charles I can't stop loving you which endows an apocalyptic, and timidly hopeful, ending with irony and romanticism.
Metropolis is a masterpiece, a film that features an android with feelings and a retro setting, it is worth collecting.
Katsuhiro Otomo, is an author characterized by an apocalyptic pessimism and a fascination with biotechnology and violence. He was the director of Akira and in this film he is the scriptwriter of this ambitious adaptation of the mythical comic book by Osamu Tezuka, the first master of Japanese manga (comics) and anime.
In the film there are violent fights, poetic romantic scenes, family conflicts and criticisms of radical science and racism. There is an incredible visual display made by its director Rintaro full of baroque retro futuristic scenarios, with excellent 2D and 3D animation, there is a lot of detail in the drawings, the scenarios are full of life and a fight between robots and humans is shown very well recreated, all this accompanied by a splendid soundtrack full of jazz.

From the first minute this anime left me tied to my seat by its captivating visual design, and today 22 years later I watched the film again and in my opinion it is far superior to many others from Pixar, Disney, and Dreamworks for its animation style and the story it addresses.
Metropolis by Osamu Tezuka (creator of Astroboy) is a manga from 1949, with a plot that includes elements of robotics, human nature, artificial intelligence, morality and ecological disasters that may affect the future of humanity.
Metropolis the anime premiered in 2001, being produced by the Madhouse studio, directed by Hayashi Shigeyuki (Rintaro) with Katsuhiro Otomo (Akira) in charge of the script, the artistic direction is by Shuichi Hirata, and the soundtrack belongs to Toshiyuji Honda. It is based on a Japanese comic by Osamu Tezuka who was nicknamed the god of manga by many.
