Prey manages to revive the Predator saga by functioning as a prequel to all the previous movies. It is set in a Comanche nation in 1719 (300 years before the original installment), where the heroine is Naru (Amber Midthunder), a stubborn, axe-wielding young woman obsessed with being recognized as a hunter in a context dominated, of course, by men who regard her with a mixture of condescension and derision.

In the film, a group of Comanche hunters face one of these aliens in a dangerous duel that takes place in a huge, wild and hostile territory.

Naru, who has grown up in the bosom of the elders, knows that she is capable of doing the same as the rest of the hunters and does not hesitate to protect her tribe from the dangers that threaten their settlement. Equipped with the most primitive weapons to pursue and confront her prey, a super-developed alien predator with a high-tech arsenal, she is involved in a fierce and terrifying fight where her character is comparable to that of Lieutenant Ripley from Alien. This aspiring hunter must run, hide and use the forests, meadows and rivers to ambush an intelligent being that enjoys stalking its prey.

Together with her dog Sarii, she sets off in search of this mysterious beast capable of skinning snakes alive and leaving buffalo carcasses in its wake.

This is a film that combines a coming of age starring a young woman trying to find her own place within her tribe. At the same time, we observe a western where we see the friction between the French trappers, who indiscriminately hunt animals for their own benefit, and the Comanches trying to defend their land; finally all this ends up conforming with the science fiction element in this case the Predator, one of the most recognizable creatures of cinema.

As a narrative device, the film uses the magical-religious thinking of the Native Americans to make sense of the science fiction elements: Naru confuses the sound of the alien ship's engines with thunder and a mythical bird or the mask of the new Predator whose shape resembles that of a wendigo, (an evil spirit said to devour the Native Americans who penetrated the forests).

At times, the film has no dialogue, but viewers are able to understand what we are seeing through some extremely ingenious camera movements.

The Predator on this occasion appears imposing, more brutal and dangerous, possessing advanced technology compared to what the Comanche possessed. Nevertheless, he enjoys direct combat as he confronts a bear in hand-to-hand combat.

In the final part of the film, Naru and Taabe, his brother, are captured by a camp of hunters ranceses, (dirty, ugly and bad) who want to use them to set a trap for the alien hunter, but the Predator manages to kill almost everyone, being this situation for Naaru and Taabe to break free, and plant him fight the alien, ending Taabe dead.

Our heroine returns to the camp where she was imprisoned, and one of the badly wounded hunters offers her a gun in exchange for healing. Naru receives the gun with which she intends to kill the predator.

At the end of the movie, Naru arrives with his tribe bringing the head of the predator as an offering, and the gun, which is the same one that a Predator gives to Danny Glover at the end of Predator 2.

Director Dan Trachtenberg manages to maintain tension throughout the film and does not overexpose the creature before our eyes. This is the second film by this director after Cloverfield Avenue 10. He makes intelligent use of the natural Canadian locations and wisely doses the visual effects.

In the end titles of the film we see cave paintings on the walls of a cave describing what happened in the film and if we pay attention we also see painted spaceships that may be indicative of how a sequel would begin.

A very good action movie that I would classify as the second best of the saga, it is a pity that it has only been released on Streaming and not in theaters. Highly recommended.

Thanks for stopping by, enjoy the movie, I'll say goodbye until a new opportunity.
