[Movie] PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 3 (2011) (EN-ES) | REVIEW 👻🎬🎃

It was no coincidence that, one year after the release of the second installment, the third arrived to tie up loose ends in the narrative of this paranormal world. The screenwriters worked on a story meant to be told in reverse; in other words, this is a prequel to the prequel. While the previous installments were set in 2005 and 2006, this story takes place in 1988, during the rise of video cameras and VHS tapes.
Like the previous installment (“Paranormal Activity 2”), the film prioritizes the overarching plot by giving meaning to narrative events already seen throughout the saga. In this case, we learn about the backstory of sisters Kristi and Katie, as well as their family’s connection to the entity that is finally introduced as “Toby.”
I will discuss several aspects of the film, but I’ll begin by focusing entirely on the most important element of any movie: Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman’s direction within the franchise. At the time, they had just found success with the documentary “Catfish” and did not have much experience with the found-footage subgenre. Nevertheless, they worked together to create the appropriate aesthetic and editing style for “Paranormal Activity 3.” They understood that the kind of horror and suspense employed by the franchise does not rely solely on sudden images appearing on screen, but also on speculation and anticipation about what might appear.

The story is now set in 1988, during the childhood of sisters Katie and Kristi, whom we had already met as adults in the first two installments. They live with their mother, Julie, and her boyfriend, Dennis, a wedding videographer whose profession justifies the presence of cameras throughout the house when strange noises and inexplicable phenomena begin disturbing the household’s peace.
Dennis decides to document everything that happens with the help of a colleague, but what initially seem like strange occurrences become disturbing when the girls begin interacting with an “imaginary friend.” The invisible entity known as “Toby” grows increasingly aggressive and unleashes a domestic nightmare that completely escapes the adults’ understanding.

With each new installment, the franchise has added some visual variety to what I have called the “security-camera effect,” which is its most characteristic feature. Unlike the previous film, which added the perspectives of different security cameras, the only contribution this installment made was the “brilliant” idea of mounting a camera on the base of an oscillating fan so that it would move from side to side, from left to right.
I have to say that I did not enjoy this, as it became somewhat frustrating in certain scenes. I understand that this was the intention, but I am not referring to it as something that creates suspense. Rather, it is the typical horror of “I see something, I turn my head, and by doing so I lose sight of what I was watching.” I realize that, since the film is set in 1988, it would have been anachronistic to show the closed-circuit security-camera perspective seen in the previous installments. However, I think they could have done something more than simply placing a camera on the base of a fan.

If the second installment complemented the first, then this third installment complements the second by developing the saga’s mythological foundations. It is a large-scale supernatural horror story, and the elements seen across these three films gradually intertwine at the appropriate moments, like putting together a puzzle. “Paranormal Activity 3” provides the historical context of a family associated with witchcraft and demonic pacts.
Honestly, I think viewers may reach a point where they pay more attention to the story being told than to the horror and suspense of the “security-camera effect” sequences. The mystery becomes the most interesting aspect, causing the horror to take a back seat.
The films focus on expanding the universe through their supernatural-horror themes, but I think doing so causes the horror to lose intensity. After all, any average viewer knows that the security-camera sequences are the parts of the film in which paranormal anomalies occur.

The screenplay manages to unravel Toby’s origins, as well as the paranormal persecution the characters suffer in the present, which is actually the culmination of a childhood torment that somehow, something I hope a future installment will explain, was erased from the girls’ memories.
At this point, the demonic entity known as “Toby” acquires a defined identity as an antagonist within the franchise. It ceases to be a poltergeist and reveals itself as a malevolent force tied to a dark generational pact forged by a matriarchal coven. Its relationship with young Kristi becomes unsettling and disturbing in certain scenes, as he is portrayed as an imaginary friend who manipulates the girl.

The film establishes that his purpose is directed at the family’s firstborn sons because of an outstanding debt. This had been theorized in the previous installment and is confirmed here. Therefore, the entire narrative basically makes sense, despite some inconsistencies in its chronological coherence.
“Paranormal Activity 3” is, in my opinion, the peak of the entire franchise, as it is the most memorable film of its era. The texture of the eighties VHS format gave it a distinctive aesthetic that influenced other productions, such as the V/H/S saga (2012). It is a prequel that makes the previous films more interesting in retrospect, and it is the most decent entry.

I was so young when I used to watch these movies. They felt good and realistic till I watched the last part that showed differences, like devils or something came out to abduct people, I guess. Good review, btw.
