5 Family Friendly Halloween Movies - Week 1

With Halloween right around the corner, what better way to start the season off than to revisit some family friendly movies? Over the next four weeks, I will be posting a list of movies that span several genres. So, grab a cup of cocoa, maybe some popcorn, and settle on the couch for some spooky fun. I will not be providing spoilers, so no worries there.

Also, a note: this list is in chronological order based on the release date.

First up we have a Tim Burton cult classic, Beetlejuice. This 1988 PG rated creepy classic is a wonderful ghost story that touches on death in a strange way. This dark humor movie has a myriad of unique characters that leave a lasting memory. The visuals in this film are fantastic, bringing some color choices that just simply work well. The song choices are fun and catchy as well.

Next up, we have The Addams Family. This 1991 PG 13 rated film by Barry Sonnenfeld has captured the hearts of millions. This masterpiece was inspired by the comics by Charles Addams and by the 1960’s sitcom. Full of dark dry wit and double entendres, this movie is enjoyed by adults as well as kids and teens. There are a lot of creepy and kooky things to enjoy about this film.

Now on to a really fun Halloween movie, Hocus Pocus. This 1993 PG movie is a favorite among many for several reasons. It has a spooky fairytale vibe that draws you in. It is eye catching with beautiful colors throughout. The soundtrack is stellar. It is a classic story that is fun to watch every Halloween season.

• “Fine, but everyone knows that Halloween was invented by the candy companies. It’s a conspiracy.” – Max Dennison

One of my very favorite movies ever, The Nightmare before Christmas, is next on this list. This film was also released in 1993 and is rated PG and is another classic by Tim Burton. Boasting a delightful mix of darkness and magic, this film has it all. Great visuals, popular songs, and a unique storyline. The characters are uncommon but lovable in a weird way. Overall, an excellent choice for a family movie night.

• “I might just split a seam if I don’t die laughing first!” – Oogie Boogie

And finally on this list is Casper. This 1995 PG movie is still a top favorite of mine. It is a charming ghost movie that gives some serious Goosebumps vibes. It brings an array of emotions to the screen that are relatable no matter your age. It has comedy, drama, and a tad bit of romance. This film touches a little on dealing with the loss of family. This is a family favorite in my household.
