Aliens vs Predator (film): Entertaining but kind of dumb

I was a really big fan of Alien, Aliens and also the original Predator films. While I have watched all of the other ones in the series' lineups, I can't say that I have really found much merit in any of them and I can say that while the action in this one was pretty good the overall story is weak and dare I say, stuipd.

I think that long before videogames started asking these questions a lot of us kids would probably postulate on who would win between Aliens and Predators and for the most part we came up with the idea that the Predators would likely be victorious due to their intelligence and high tech whereas the Aliens for the most part are just mindless walking killing machines with acid blood.

This is kind of what happens in this movie but things go badly because, just like in the first two Aliens films the Aliens replicate so quickly and outnumber their opponents.

They needed to involve humans in the mix for the sake of the film and how they made this happen was kind of stupid. A vast underground labyrinth is discovered after some heat signatures bring the attention of Charles Bishop (yeah, that Bishop) who is a wealthy something or other and even though he is not aware of the fact that Aliens are involved at the time of doing so, he conveniently sends a team from his multinational company to investigate the site and claim it for his industry. I realize that it seems as though we have to have Lance Henriksen involved in anything that Aliens is involved in and I guess he looks forward to the work but I personally find these "happenstance" situations to be a bit silly.

I don't know about you, but if I was Bishop and had managed to barely survive so many times when I encountered these otherworldly creatures, I would probably do everything I could to stay away from them

So a bunch of stuff happens and the queen alien has been in a cryostasis frozen state for 100 years and apparently the Predators come to earth every 100 years or so for the "ultimate hunt" and they pyramid is built as a failsafe so that it can be closed should the hunting team fail. The really smart humans who just happen to be fluent in reading hieroglyphics are able to deduce this in the film.

The action is pretty great in battles, I will give the film this much credit but honestly, that is basically the only thing that this film has going for it. The acting is really sub-par on the part of most of the people involved including and probably especially on behalf of Lex Woods (Sanaa Lathan) - who serves as a team leader in this expedition.

Basically, this is a gore-fest with some moments of fantastic action and then about 63 minutes of dialogue and arguing that doesn't really do much for the film but they had to fill up that time with something.

Should I watch it?

I think if you get your rocks off from the Aliens or Predator franchises then there is a decent chance you will enjoy this but outside of that demographic of nerds I would say that this film offers very little in the way of relatability for the average viewer. It received mostly negative reviews and has a pretty terrible score of all of the major fan-based opinion film rating sites. I made it all the way through but rolled my eyes at multiple points at the really stupid choices that the humans made that results in their demise. It is also quite evident from the very start who the sole survivor is going to be and even though I have not revealed who that is in this review, I would bet there is a great chance you can figure out who that would be. Mostly, I think this is worth watching but only if you are a fan of the sci-fi elements involved. The rest of ya can skip this and not be missing anything.

Alien vs. Predator is currently available in most regions on Netflix... although I wouldn't plan on it staying there for very long
