Moon Knight (series): Much MUCH better than I thought it would be

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

For the most part I end up watching series based on the opinions of certain friends of mine but when I run out of that I am subjected to the crapshoot that is picking something at random that is put on the Plex server that I am a part of by someone else.

I had no idea what Moon Knight even was but when the series was doing their intro screens and I saw "Marvel" I nearly switched it off without even watching any of it. Such is my disdain for almost anything that this company has anything to do with anymore.

I haven't really followed any superhero stuff since I was a teenager and a lot of this has to do with the fact that DC and even more so Marvel have absolutely inundated us with garbage over the years to the point that when I see that they made something new, I don't even bother looking at it. Honestly, had i known that this was a Marvel production I likely would have just passed it over. After watching 4 episodes or so I can say that while it isn't the best thing I have seen in a while, it is considerably better than I presumed something Marvel would make could be.

I'm going to do my best not to spoil things but will just say that this isn't a typical super-hero movie because the main character named Steven, doesn't know he has powers and once he finds out that he does have them he doesn't actually want them. He is a reluctant participant in a sort of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde situation which you have to admit, is a big part of what this character is based upon.

They spell the fact that Steven has been the Moon Knight for quite some time for us in a roundabout and not obvious way. They show him waking up in his bed and dispatching a tether or sorts from his leg because as he later says, he frequently wakes up in places that are not his bedroom with no recollection of how it is that he got there. He chalks this up to sleepwalking but as we slowly find out, it is actually something far more profound than that.

Quite early on in the show he goes to sleep in his apartment and wakes up in the Austrian alps where he witnesses Arthur Harrow (played by a long-haired Ethan Hawke) demanding that he hand over an Egyptian artifact that he is unaware that he is even carrying. This is where we start to see Steven become more and more aware of his situation that they describe medically as DID ( dissociative identity disorder) and while I might be making this up, it seems like multiple-personality-disorder.

Hawke is a nice addition to this

One thing I really appreciate about this entire series or at least what I have seen of it thus far is that it focuses on Egyptian history and the mystical lore surrounding it. So if you at all enjoyed The Mummy films I think there is a chance that this might strike the same nerve with you as it did me.

The above are not spoilers, it is in the first episode and much of it is featured in the trailer.

Should I watch it?

I can't believe that I am about to say this about something that Marvel has something to do with let alone Disney but actually YES, I do believe you should at least give it a try. This isn't the usual overpowered superhero trash that I have come to expect from Marvel. They also, at least up to this point, have shied away from any sort of social re-education objective that I, and perhaps we, have come to expect from Marvel and many other big players in the game. Perhaps they are actually starting to learn that we don't want to be lectured, we want to be entertained.

I do think you will have to have a bit of patience in the first episode because it does take it a minute to get started, but if you do stick around I think you will end up getting into it right around the middle of episode 2. As far as Marvel goes this might be one of the best series I have seen by them but I will admit, that isn't saying much since they set the bar so low in recent years.

Marvel are always trying to deliver the best and your review has made this series an interesting one. I came across it some time ago but didn't pay much attention to it but now I think I will have to include it my watch list.

I think most Marvel stuff is complete garbage and this is why this particular series surprised me. I started watching it just to see what sort of a dumpster fire it was going to become but was honestly very entertained.

My favorite Marvel series of all time. I was so sad when I found out that they don’t plan go create any more episodes after what I considered to be a strong first season.

avatar

oh, I didn't know this. That's a damn shame. Is it related to the writers' strike or this is set in stone that they will do no more?

avatar

I'm not sure, but they confirmed it wasn't coming back. They just announced a new Moon Knight comic book, but sadly the show is still off.

That is odd because this is one of the only Marvel things that has been released that was liked by just about everyone. Maybe they have to tighten their purse-strings because they have been getting so much negative press lately and perhaps losing money. I've never really understood how series that are on streaming services make money anyway though.

I have no idea, but this is how I feel about Moon Knight not getting a second season

I watched this series, to be honest, it surprised me since it offered something that I hadn't seen. Needless to say, it is a good series.

Another one not for me and after viewing the trailer it just is not my thing. Maybe the next review I will get luckier.

If you don't like superhero stuff, and I normally don't, even a good superhero show isn't going to appeal to you and that is fair enough.
