Project Gemini: Truly awful Sci-Fi

This could have been a great story because the premise behind it is actually quite interesting but in the end the lack of continuity, the cliche blunders on the part of the actors, the continual creation of tension through in-fighting among the crew, and the general lack of anything that can even remotely called acting completely ruined what could have been a fantastic film

Before I go any further I'll say one positive thing about the film and that is that I am seriously impressed with how they handled the CGI in this movie. It looks genuinely real despite the fact that it is an impossible situation to replicate live. Considering the fact that they had a paltry budget of $6.5 million it is truly remarkable that they were able to make this look as good as they did. It's just a pity that it was inside of what is otherwise an across-the-board horrible production.

it simply looks amazing on screen when moving

I'm guessing that after they looked at how much the sets and CGI scenes were going to cost they didn't have very much money left over to hire actors that actually know how to act and this is where a big flaw of the film comes in. I'm not going to list the names of the actors because unless you are Russian, there is a very good chance you have never heard of any of them. The film was made in Russia and Kazakhstan and I for one can't really think of any movie that I have ever seen out of either one of these countries.

It's difficult to determine if the movie is overdubbed or not because the movements of the mouths match up to the words. This might be part of where the problem comes from: The actors just sound really silly when they talk and in many situations it appears as though they are simply reading lines off a cue card across from them.

It's kind of funny once you start to notice it because there are many scenes where there is no good reason for the person to be looking down while they are speaking, but they just do that. Also, in confrontations with other characters you can definitely see that they are looking over their shoulders, not at them. They couldn't even be asked to memorize the lines!

The overall story is very typical but with just one unique twist that I wont reveal in case you want to watch this movie for "bad films research." It is the usual "the world is dying and this group of astronauts are the only thing that can save us" type of film and as you would expect since every other film in this genre is for the most part exactly the same, the plan falls apart almost immediately.

There is a completely unnecessary love story built in there as well complete with the ubiquitous flashbacks of the two lovers underneath flowing sheets to indicate that they are in a relationship with one another.

The only reason why I ended up with this film is because of the fact that I am always looking for a good sci-fi movie and when something new comes out with a decent budget, I will normally at least have a look at it. I will admit that it didn't take long in this movie before I had the remote in my hand skipping minutes at a time through the dialogue.

The dialogue itself is just absurd and spoken by people that clearly do not have command of the language. Again, It is difficult for me to tell if this film is overdubbed or not because the mouths match up a lot better than in other films I have seen that were overdubbed. If it is dubbed, I would like to get my hands on one that is in the original Russian (if it ever was in Russian) so I can see if the actors really are this bad, or if the voice actors are at fault here.

Normally I find that all overdubbed films are terrible and I would much rather read subtitles than lose the emotion of the original actors' voices. I love Korean films for example but the overdubs of these same films are terrible.

Did a decent job with that trailer, but you'll notice there is almost no dialogue in it... which was definitely done on purpose

Should I watch it?

I think that there is only one reason to watch this movie and that is to witness with your own eyes exactly how bad a film can be. There are some people out there that enjoy reveling in poor film-making and given the right mood, I am one of those people. I ended up really not enjoying this film because I went into it with the expectations of it being a good sci-fi film. It is not that.

This is a recycling of several other sci-fi classics with modern-day CGI (which is the only redeeming factor in the film) and unfortunately, what appears to be amateur actors who desperately need some lessons in that art.

There are so many really bad films out there currently and it is like no one cares any more. I watched a shocker last night called "Gold" and skimmed through it and the sad thing is it actually got worse.

would you say "Gold" was a so bad it's good type of film or just a stay the hell away bad type of film. I've never heard of it.

It seems that good films are getting difficult to come by lately. It's been a little while since I saw something that I can say was truly excellent.

Definitely stay away as one of those movies you should be paid to watch. Has basically 3 actors who are in the outback of Australia and one dies and plays a 4th role as the sister. I have never seen a film with such a low budget as I could have produced this on my phone. If bad movies are classified as B movies then this id further down the alphabet.

haha, ok. Point taken. I'll stay away :)
