I was surprised to wake up and find out he was gone and now have started to go back and watch all of his movies. I am going to say something that isn't really all that popular and state that Madsen was a "mid" actor and that is why he wasn't in very many things without his pal Quentin's name attached to it. He isn't bad, he just isn't very versatile. I am one of those people that doesn't think Reservoir Dogs is a very good movie either haha

It has all the flaws that a debut film from its novice director could have, but it laid the groundwork for what Tarantino's style would be very well. And as for Mr. Madsen in the film, he fulfilled his role completely. I still watch the film and it makes me uncomfortable with his calm, relaxed smile.
I think my standoffish approach to Reservoir Dogs has a lot to do with one of my college roommates who was obsessed with the film. We had giant posters of the various characters in our living room and he would constantly quote the film. Anytime new people came over he basically forced them to watch it with him and he would constantly pause it in order to point out the amazing dialogue ... So I am probably jaded about this in a major way.
