You're the Worst (series): It's decent and easily digested... but
The hanging but was intentional. The reason why I am a bit perplexed by this show is because it has absolutely outstanding marks on all the review sites and has been nominated for a number of awards. So when I sat down to watch it 12 years after it was first released I was expecting something extraordinary and well, I just don't think that it is.

So a brief introduction to what this show is about as far as I can tell with just 4 episodes in my rear-view.
The main characters Jimmy and Gretchen meet one another as they are being kicked out of a wedding for being less-than-wonderful guests. Jimmy used to be in a relationship with the bride and was surprised to be invited and Gretchen is friends with the bride's sister. They both don't really like weddings, marriages, or relationships for that matter, but due to drinks and what not they decide to hook up and that was supposed to be all there was to it, but as time goes by they (HUGE SURPRISE!) start to have feelings for one another and find that while the two of them aren't good at relationships in an overall sense, they do pretty well together even though they are quite dysfunctional.

The show is decent, ok? The writing is creative and a bit out of the box, the characters are played well by the actors that are doing that, and the 25 minute episodes don't ever seem to be filled with senseless crap whose only purpose is to prolong a season and the number of episodes. Things are done quite well. But the issue I have with it is that it is IMO not as great as the critics would have us believe and this is why I think this show was part of an almost forced watch for people.
When Vogue Magazine writes and article called "You're the Worst is the best TV show you are not watching" I feel like the fix is well and truly in. Vogue pretends to be an observer and pretends to offer genuine commentary but what they really seem to be are paid shills that will recommend and sing the praises of whoever is giving them money to do so. They recommended Rings of Power as well as 28 Years Later and I make it no secret that I think both of those are complete trash.
When Vogue and others like them really get behind something, especially if that something is a show or movie that is under-performing, I feel as though they are running a wing of public relations for that show or movie.
Some people will point to a disconnect between professional and audience scores on sites but honestly, I don't think even that can be trusted in today's world where it is constantly revealed that a lot, if not most, of all internet traffic is actually bots arguing with other bots.
At the end of the day You're the Worst is a perfectly fine TV show but it isn't the groundbreaking and wonderful "must see" sort of thing that a lot of publications would have you believe it is.
Should I watch it?
I'm gonna play it safe here and say that more people than not will likely think the same thing that I do when I say that "there are worse things to do with your time than watch this." I do NOT think this show is particularly special or at all in the realm of "must see." It is slightly above average and since there is so much junk out there, that might be enough for most people. As for me, I am going to ride out the rest of the first season and see where it takes me but honestly, I don't know how long I can stay focused on the dysfunctional relationship of two people that don't have much in the way of a supporting cast or side-plots.

You can legally stream all 5 seasons with any of the packages involving Hulu. It is also available to buy on Amazon and Fandango at home.
