Anybody how is a gambler is chasing that one big win. The life changing money or the lotto money. In Ireland money from gambling or lotto's are tax free so it is even more profitable than in some other countries.

There is a documentary just after launching on Netflix about a group of people in Ireland who managed to successfully buy the lotto back in 1992.

The didn't just chase the big win they meticulously planned to exploit the system.

Enter Stefan Klincewicz, a Cork-born accountant of Polish heritage, stamp collector, and self-taught mathematician. Fresh off co-winning a £2.4 million jackpot in 1990 with a 10-person syndicate from Dublin's Scruffy Murphy's pub (Europe's biggest Lotto prize at the time), Klincewicz spotted the flaw. He assembled a 100-strong "ragtag team of chancers" (gamblers, entrepreneurs, and reprobates) to fund and execute the plan: flood newsagents and post offices nationwide with bulk buys ahead of a massive May 1992 rollover.

They group driven by Stefan plan to take on a big rollover jackpot biding their time until the conditions are ripe for a big win. They needed a rollover jackpot to make it profitable.

To buy all the combinations from 1-49 with six numbers cost - £974k
Jackpot for the plot was £2.46 M

When the national lottery realized what was happening they started to switch off ticket terminals and try to prevent the group from getting all of their money on the for the draw frustrating the group and putting them under media pressure to turn the public against them and to freeze their funding for the operation.

It slightly worked with the group only getting to about 80% of the total combinations.

Fortunately for the group they had managed to tour the country getting small amounts on and a friend up in Dublin with access to multiple machines which got them that high.

The smartest thing that they did was to work the tickets in order of most likely to win down to least likely to win. While every combination has an equal chance to win the lotto it was strategized that a straight combo was least likely to win such as
1-2-3-4-5-6 which to date has never won the lotto in any country.

Despite that they managed to win a share of the jackpot plus all of the other lower prizes available netting a profit of about £800K which is not bad for a weeks work but in the end it was playing the odds rather than guaranteeing the win.

It's a funny story well told and I really enjoyed how they managed the whole operation. I know there is a similar movie in America about buying the lotto which i might watch next.

It's not always about betting on the long shots but identifying gaps to take advantage of.
