November 2022

People have looked at me a bit strangely when I've arrived at stays with a 40" flat screen television in tow.

I think this is what scared the sweet elderly couple in Somerset West, actually. It makes it seem as though we're moving in permanently.

It's been worth the hassle though. There's no T.V. at the urban farm and... well... any parent with a child who games and enjoys media at all will relate.

Part of The Accidental Theory: A journey to freedom
Read from the beginning >>

While Nathan's scrolling around one night, I see "V for Vendetta" is back on the viewing list.

This movie is one of my top three all time favourite classics.

I wait to share these movies with my kids so that we can have a conversation about the perspective and philosophies they impart. Back when when my daughter was around fourteen years old, and we watched it together, I even thought I understood this movie.

I did not.

But I think know that with any kind of philosophy...

you really have to walk through an experience similar to the concept being shared to see if it is any kind of "truth".

For you, that is.

Everything else we read is really only somebody else's opinion.

But my opinionated opinion of this movie...*sigh

small-hr.png

I must have watched V for Vendetta three times already by the time I watched it with my daughter around seven years ago. And I've watched it twice more since then

But I only really understood what the writer was trying to share when I watched it, yet again, with one of the only people who believed my story.

In 2020.

A school friend who I hadn't connected with in over forty years.

Melony had ended up staying over one night and I couldn't quite believe she hadn't yet seen it. We watched it together, her falling asleep next to me while I sat riveted right through to the end again.

Except, this time, I understood what the writer was actually trying to say. And when I did, I couldn't believe I'd missed it for all these years. I guess I'm a slow learner. Or just plain stubborn.

Whatever...

in 2020 I finally "got it".

small-hr.png

29 March 2023

I sit here
reading the quotes from this movie and wonder
if I even need to write this post anymore

because it's all been said before

and said far better
than I can share it

over and over again

in a hundred beautiful and beautifully different ways.

So why are we still stuck here?
Why are we still struggling
to find our way "out"?

I share these thoughts
in my own way
as I've come to understand them

but the very concept I'm trying to share stops me being heard.

And it's not even about gender.
Or race.
Or age.
Or whatever.

These constructs are only there to
distract and divide us

It's not about the constructs.
It's not about systems,
categories
or identity

Fear is the only "enemy"
we need to conquer

to be free

That really is bad, huh?! But you get the drift... and also...

I'm not really a poet.

small-hr.png

I won't even try to say it any better than it's already been said down there. 👇

I'm nowhere near as eloquent.

It really is this simple though.

Dialogue from V for Vendetta Original source

You were already in a prison. You've been in a prison all your life.

Happiness is a prison, Evey. Happiness is the most insidious prison of all.

Your lover lived in the penitentiary that we are all born into, and was forced to rake the dregs of that world for his living. He knew affection and tenderness but only briefly. Eventually, one of the other inmates stabbed him with a cutlass and he drowned upon his own blood. Is that it, Evey? Is that happiness worth more than freedom?

It's not an uncommon story, Evey. Many convicts meet with miserable ends. Your mother. Your father. Your lover. One by one, taken out behind the chemical sheds... and shot. All convicts, hunched and deformed by the smallness of their cells, the weight of their chains, the unfairness of their sentences.

I didn't put you in a prison, Evey. I just showed you the bars."

Evey replies
'You're wrong! It's just life, that's all! It's just how life is. It's what we've got to put up with. It's all we've got. What gives you the right to decide it's not good enough?'

"You're in a prison, Evey. You were born in a prison. You've been in a prison so long, you no longer believe there's a world outside.

That's because you're afraid, Evey. You're afraid because you can feel freedom closing in upon you. You're afraid because freedom is terrifying.

Don't back away from it, Evey. Part of you understands the truth even as part pretends not to.

You were in a cell, Evey. They offered you a choice between the death of your principles and the death of your body. You said you'd rather die. You faced the fear of your own death and you were calm and still. The door of the cage is open, Evey. All that you feel is the wind from outside.

― Alan Moore, V for Vendetta

small-hr.png

Yeah. The scene in the prison and her walking out into the rain...

only made absolute sense to me in 2020.

I tell you summink else...

Alan Moore nailed it.

small-hr.png

rain.jpg

“The past can't hurt you anymore. Not unless you let it. They made you into a victim, Evey. They made you into a statistic. But, that's not the real you. That's not who you are inside.”

November 2022

"Hey! V for Vendetta's back on Netflix." I say excitedly, wondering if Nathan's old enough to watch it yet.

A discussion ensues between us about whether he is or not.

Nathan's very mature about not overloading himself with content that upsets him. He's really empathetic and I've suggested to him that he control his content in the same way we do our diet and nutrition.

A mental diet, really. [1]

I remember some of the movie and decide to wait a few more years and, before I've voiced this, Nathan has decided he'll wait another year or two as well.

We end up watching "Uncharted" instead because... well... super cool game and I haven't seen the flick. Plus I think Tom Holland is the absolute best Spidey-spidey awesome yet, so I just like him in anything now. Nathan and I have discussed this at length so be warned if you wanna argue this point.

I fall asleep and miss half the movie again. I can see fellow parents nodding their heads in my mind's eye.

small-hr.png

But, a few nights later, when I hear the sound of gunshots resounding in the area just outside the farm fencing...

...I won't be getting much sleep at all.

This will, however, be the night that cements that important lesson I talked about earlier.

Along with learning more about the animals, I'll be offered an experience that cements some learning (and skill) I've been working on for some years now...

why (and how) to not to react.

And, not so strangely enough, it was my own government and the dictates of my society that imparted this valuable lesson and skill on to me.

In a very similar manner to the way V offered the learning to Evey.

Yeah.

Alan Moore nailed it.

Personal Update

Yes, the [meta] Verse project I threatened to share with you is still happening around here. Slowly!

The original artwork of Aya A working title, was a once to be t-shirt design for a "Psychedelic Freedom Fighter" t-shirt, before I was actually "enlightened" by my government and my [Capetonian Bots - added in edit for clarity] society. Gratitude. Genuinely. But ouch. [edited to remove sweary words... I guess it still hurts] 👍

Aya A working title was originally created in Adobe Photoshop on my old desktop machine that could actually run Photoshop.

I'm now working on a refurbished Macbook that can't run the latest version of anything. Currently waiting for Nathan to return so I can use his laptop to open the original file...

to prove to you that I didn't use AI to create her.

Who would have thought we would find ourselves here, huh?!

I've been grooving off the whole AI thing but, honestly, this last week made me aware of why artists have a problem with AI. So interesting that this conversation didn't really matter much to me until it affected me personally, huh? Only human! 😆

I'm also busy sticking up a new website because I need to submit some kind of portfolio to @nftshowroom to be verified and, of course, I destroyed most of my work like a good artist and lost my business website in the ruckus.

It's on though... brb.

In between, let's get this journey caught up from there to here and then go from here to there.

Footnotes

[1] Content seems to sit with Nathan, the same way it does me. Photographic memory, I always thought, although Nathan's researched a bit more on his own and is wondering if his is Eidetic.

Never heard of this! I learn summink new from the child every time we chat.

The bottom line is we can both recall stuff pretty well. Mine involves auditory recall and feeling (kinetic) as well. It's as though I'm right back there. This has made me wonder if other people, like me, who struggle(d) with mental health aren't just really good at recall. It's exhausting mentally, you know. If you aren't taught to manage it.

Yep.

I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings

The free bird leaps
on the back of the wind
and floats downstream
till the current ends
and dips his wings
in the orange sun rays
and dares to claim the sky. But a bird that stalks
down his narrow cage
can seldom see through
his bars of rage
his wings are clipped and
his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing. The caged bird sings
with fearful trill
of the things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill for the caged bird
sings of freedom The free bird thinks of another breeze
and the trade winds soft through the sighing trees
and the fat worms waiting on a dawn-bright lawn
and he names the sky his own.

But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams
his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream
his wings are clipped and his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing

The caged bird sings
with a fearful trill
of things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the caged bird
sings of freedom.

You really do know your stuff...

avatar

Good lord, man... I'm muddling along and making it up as I go. Same as all of us. I don't think anyone knows anything, really... but muddling along is far more fun together. 😊

Thank you for connecting 🖤

avatar

Love that movie 🎥 and he did nail it…

You are on to something in your footnotes. Some people do tend to recall and relive. It sticks and scars much more when you do. Some people just forget, some will never.
Until one finds a way to manage it all.

Have a lovely Wednesday sweetie 🤗🥰

avatar

A talented person is talented in everything...
Even here, you managed to attract attention with your thoughts!)

And by the way, I haven't seen the movie and will certainly be watching it today. It was enough for me a couple lines of dialogue from the film to know that it will be interesting).

Also, I was glad to read another of your posts a little sooner than a week or two later). 😜

Hello!

Thank you!

It's a great movie :D I hope it resonates with you.

And yes. My admin has been rubbish but I usually put that and reading everyone else's stuff before my own content and I just don't have time for both right now so trying to find a balance. Hope I'm not missing too much but it sure feels like it!

It'll balance out.

Been packing and busy moving so I've been trying to keep them a bit shorted as well.

I do go on a bit!

Hopefully will have landed this weekend and can come and catch up with you and some other good people properly. Thanks so much for your kindness and ongoing support and encouragement. I really appreciate you. 🌼

You made me lol.

Tnx, angel.

Looking forward to taking my time and catching up with some of your thoughts this weekend if all goes well! But who the f*ck knows what happens next, huh? 😅

Stay you! 💕

I want to see your website and your work! Hurry, Nicky! Hurrrry!

I've watched V for Vendetta a couple of times, too. I rarely watch anything more than once, but V is one of those exceptions (another being the 'reimagined' Battlestar Galactica). Cinema does not always need to make a person feel good. Sometimes it needs to make a person feel uncomfortable. And think.

avatar

I so agree. That's the point of Art. And stuff like V moves into that.

They don't make 'em like they used to :/

All special effects and bling now... where did all the good stories go.

Website is almost done but now I think it's crap so... it's hard to be an arty type.

another being the 'reimagined' Battlestar Galactica

Really? I'll dig it up... er... where would someone dig it up?

avatar

I get that the movie really requires so much intellect. I haven't heard of it prior to today. It seems very epic tho.

I learn summink new from the child every time we chat.

This just confirms the fact that you're very receptive. I've come across adults who just want to talk but never listen. Thee forget that one can't learn new things without listening.

avatar

Haw. Thank you :)

I practice listening. I think it's an art these days.

I know, right. And kids are actually smarter than us in so many ways. Just because they're still curious and open minded. Oh no. I've learned to listen! Fastest way to learn to. You're right :D

p.s. we adults are pretty stupid and don't really know what we're doing half the time. Honestly. Look at the world we've created. And how dare we tell kids we know what's what? Really! 🙄

Listen to the youth. They are more awake, honest and aware than my generation. They need to trust themselves more!

avatar

This is lovely nickydee☺️. Your kids are really lucky to have you❣️

avatar

Well... sometimes. 😆

Only human. Can be a total Bot. Trying to learn and get better every day.

But thank you. The young one thinks I'm pretty darned cool. The older one... well... I still had lots to learn. But, in my defense, some folks meddled in that relationship as well. I should have stopped that straight away and not tried to keep the peace :/

And so we learn!

Do you have kids, yet? I'm sensing you're a younger human...

avatar

Do you have kids, yet? I'm sensing you're a younger human.

Yes very much, I'm a younger human😅. I don't have kids of my own yet.

avatar

Well take your time! That's what I suggest.

Older parents make better parents usually. More settled!

You're definitely an "old soul".

Very wise... the way you see things so clearly. Please don't let people or the world take that away from you. 🦊

avatar

You're definitely an "old soul".

I sincerely agree with you on this one.

Very wise... the way you see things so clearly. Please don't let people or the world take that away from you. 🦊

Thank you for your kind words. I'd keep it at the back front of my mind❣️

avatar

I loved showing Jarrah old films when he was a kid. He's had a good film and literature education more through us I suppose. I still love analysing films with him. Gosh, by the time my grandson is old enough, those films will be REALLY old, and our governments will REALLY have us by the vaginas.

Isn't it funny how you only 'get' it when you are older and wiser? You bring all this meta knowledge to the text you didn't have before. There's novels I want to pick up again for this reason, but time, meh.

Please lets catch up when I'm stuck in Somerset all next summer.

avatar

Yeah... there was a spate of excellent films in the 80s and 90s. Then it all went bling, bling and Pete Tong, mostly :/

Dull down the masses, I guess. T.V is an excellent "drug".

V for Vendetta literally changed the world. And then Anonymous appearing... OMG... when Geek became the new punk!

So exciting and so cool. I must do a post on that. Seems folks still get tetchy about them. Bad publicity, I guess. More mainstream media panic. If you're still running around not adoring them you have no idea about freedom or tech. None. Zip. Zero. The end. You're just talking the talk and not walkin' the walk. 👣

Anonymous were are superheroes 😊 ❤️

Love them. Love them!! Tons of respect for anyone who puts themselves out there trying to make relevant change.

At my old age... the rest is just utter rubbish. Honestly. You can't even be scared of something you no longer have any respect for. And I don't have respect for scardy cats anymore. Not with so much at stake now.

Sorry for them? Yes. It sucks eggs living in fear. Did it most of my life and wasted most of my life.

Am I gonna be influenced by, or listen to them? Er... no thanks!

I showed this to my boy as soon as he was old enough.

Don't know if you've seen this one? Watching the trailer again and gettin' all teary. Incredible kids!

Yes. Keep the old stories going. As we would do around our fires many moons ago. Pass on the learning. Teach the kids the philosophy. The history. And to code 👍

Teach them to think critically and for themselves... maybe some of us will find some kind of freedom somehow... I dunno. It's a big fight and it will prolly never end.

Please lets catch up when I'm stuck in Somerset all next summer.

Fuck Yeah! Say when. Door is officially open :D

avatar

Yes, I've seen We are Legion. So much respect. And needed more than bloody ever.

Yes. Keep the old stories going. As we would do around our fires many moons ago. Pass on the learning. Teach the kids the philosophy. The history. And to code

I'd hope so - gone is socialism in the face of tiktokivism it seems - I despair, often.

Can you code???

avatar

Oh no. I wish!

I went into the art and then graphic design and textile design and then t-shirt design and then web design. So all arty.

So CSS and HTML, sure, but not the hardcore geek stuff. :D

Can you code?? 😁

I'd hope so - gone is socialism in the face of tiktokivism it seems - I despair, often.

Me too. It's like we are such a traumatized society now we can't say boo to a goose. Really... it feels quite hopeless some days. I agree...

Just landed and unpacked. SUCH a beautiful spot here. I think I'm gonna watch your review now :) Sitting in bed with the laptop on my lap and I'm gonna actually watch a whole move tonight. And stay awake for the whole thing!

avatar

Wait where are you? And did you watch it?

avatar

I did not. Too tired! Another move yesterday. And loadhsedding from 8pm to 10pm last night again.

Still near Somerset but better! FAR better!! SO friggin' happy right now. Been three months of yuck in sh*tty places while I wait for something to open up around here. And it has at last.

The posts you're so kindly (yeay and thank you for engaging!) reading are from November 2022... I've been on the go and catching up as I travel and juggle.

Things got a bit weird 😆 But I follow my curiosity so things often get a bit weird around here. (worth it for the learning!)

Moved 3 times since Somerset and now around Rooi Els/Pringle/Bettys. And the plan is to stay around here and make a base camp and MONEY. I need a car to travel further away from the city so it's here for now (if all goes well because life, you know :) )

May set up services around here as well - the recovery thing (funny... as soon as I considered this a client fellow traveler pitched up). It's time 👍 Apparently the void thinks I'm "ready".

Really wish we could sit together for a while... summer seems very far away.

avatar

V for Vendetta
I think I've heard of this movie somewhere, although I can't remember now due to the load of thinks I come across and forget😂😂😂

I love the psychological part of it though, seems like a movie I would really get into.

Psychological books, movies, contents really do change the way you look at things and the world...
Makes you see more reasons/instances than a regular person who doesn't read them or who haven't been in the situation.

Those regular people can make decisions and judge people instantly and easily...
It's kinda simple for them
He's either good or bad....

Yet others would try to look in between ~ a rather problematic and tedious look

Ahhhh ignorance is indeed bliss😗✨

Tbh, I don't really know what I meant there, I just put my fingers in the keyboard and kept on typing away 😂😂😂

avatar
(Edited)

Hey you 😁

Oh... it's a cult classic this one! A must see, in my book.

When we still resisted! Back in the day when punk was not dead. And we still believed we could win this battle... I think we got distracted though 🤔

They made life more expensive, got us treading water big time, started some wars and... well... Netflix and chill.

Which I'm about to do tonight... or google movies or wherever I can find what I'm gonna watch. I'm not an expert anymore. Rarely sit through a whole film these days.

I'm coming to read you this weekend so it better be good!

And pajama party tomorrow with DJ Biscuit. (9am - 11am, I think. Or around then...) Be there or be square. I'll drop a link in the channel in the morning.

Happy Friday angel 😘

Coming to read me?😂😂😂

Whatever do you mean😂😂😂

Yh, I'll be there....
From 8-12 😗

Loadshedding here from 10 - 12 and I just woke up a bit ago. Was super tired.

Comfy bed, quiet area and no street lights!! :D

Haven't had that for months!

Headed there now but it's only a bit until Eskom switches us off again :( So if I miss you I'll check in around 12 when electricity back on.

"Read you" - read your posts :) Writer's jargon <3

😂😂😂😂
Okay...

I just woke up not too long ago too, heading there now....

Just dropped a part of me to read too😗😗🔥
